A policewoman who led a group that raised awareness about violence against French officers has been found dead, amid a wave of suicides in the country’s law enforcement community.

Maggy Biskupski, 36, was discovered dead in her home outside Paris, having apparently shot herself with her service weapon. She was the founder and leader of France’s Angry Police Movement, or MPC, which she created after two officers were badly injured by a Molotov cocktail attack in 2016. The incident sparked demonstrations by France’s police force, with protesters denouncing the rise of anti-police sentiment and demanding more resources to improve public safety.

The outspoken officer had been under investigation for speaking to the media about attacks against the police without permission from her superiors.

Her death marks 30 police suicides in France since January, according to AFP. But other outlets have reported higher tallies. The recent suicide of Antoine Boutonnet, France’s former police chief in charge of fighting hooliganism, put this year’s tally at 45, not including 16 suicides by members of the country’s military police, The Local France claims.

Officials and party leaders from across France’s political spectrum mourned Biskupski’s passing, with some using the tragedy to draw attention to the plight of the country’s police.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner expressed “profound sadness” over the death of a woman who was “committed to a cause, that of defending the police, their honor, and their resources.”

Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally Party, said Biskupski’s death was a “terrible symbol of the police suffering she so tirelessly denounced.”

In the past few years, French police have been the target of a number of high-profile attacks and murders. In June 2016, a police officer and his wife were stabbed to death in Magnanville. A year later, a police officer was shot dead and two other officers were wounded in an attack in Paris.

Was the Kerch college attacker inspired by the infamous Columbine massacre in the US? That is for the investigators to find out, but his actions look shockingly similar to those of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold back in 1999.

Just like Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the Columbine attackers, the Kerch suspect identified as Vladislav Roslyakov was a senior student at the college he attacked. He assailed his fellow students with a rifle, killing at least 17 and injuring almost 50, and later shot himself. Harris and Klebold murdered 12 students and one teacher, injuring 21 more people, and also committed suicide afterwards.

In another parallel, Roslyakov detonated an improvised explosive, as well as the shooting attack, with the blast apparently hitting the college canteen. The Columbine attackers also prepared several IEDs, including propane tanks converted to bombs placed in the school cafeteria, but their bombs failed to detonate.

An optical illusion can cause you to question what you are seeing in front of you.

The clever patterns are designed to trick your brain into seeing things other than reality.

One of the optical illusions currently circulating on the internet does just that.

A cloudy pattern, made up on blue, yellow and purple shades, proves very confusing when you look closer.

The pattern was circulated by David McPhillips on Twitter, who goes by the handle @primaryeyecare.

He posted the strange image with the caption: “Stare at the image for about half a minute without moving your eyes and watch as it gradually disappears.

This is a variation of #Troxler’s effect which essentially says that if you fixate your eyes on a certain point, stimuli near that point will gradually fade.

So does it work? Many agreed in the comments section below that the pattern does indeed fade after staring at it for a while.

One user simply wrote in the comments below: “Oh… I don’t like this!”

Another gave more detail about what happened when they stared at the pattern.

They wrote: “Yes, the colors faded away. It was eerie. Once I lost focus the colors returned.”

A further Twitter user agreed: “It does fade a bit after 35 or 40 seconds. I’ve always been bad at these things though.”

However, others became frustrated that they could not see the pattern.

One wrote: “It upsets me that it doesn’t work on me…I want to see the effect too! :(.“

Some even started their eyesight, with one writing: “This didn’t work for me. That said, I have cararact surgery scheduled next week. Are you measuring this against people with 20/20 vision?”

Yesterday, a blue line optical illusion baffled the internet because of its strange pattern.

This optical illusion is confusing the internet, as its confusing shape and colours make it hard to look at.

Posted on the Imgur social sharing platform, it has caused a storm, with some claiming it affects their eyes, while others say it makes them “freak out”.

But you will find it hard to look away when you are told to look for “parallel horizontal blue lines”.

The illusion was created by Victoria Skye, a magician and illusionist.

The thick lines, which seem to be sloping in the photograph, are said to be straight.

  • Egypt is nearing a presidential election that many believe will not be fair.
  • President Abdel-Fateh al-Sisi has arrested many of his opponents in the race.
  • Egypt has not had a fair presidential election since the election of Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Morsi in 2012.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fatah Sisi’s regime has been making one thing clear about the presidential elections coming up in March: it won’t be a time for democracy.

On Tuesday, authorities arrested the leading challenger to Sisi, former army chief-of-staff Sami Anan, days after he announced on Facebook his bid for top office. The official reason was that Anan had not acquired a permit from the army to run and had allegedly forged his end-of-military-service documents.

In fact, the respected former general’s real transgression may have been constituting a credible voice of criticism to Sisi’s authoritarian rule.

In the video announcing his candidacy, Anan spoke of Egypt being in decline as a result of “faulty strategy,” in which the army was overburdened and the state’s civil sectors were hindered.

Anan was the fourth potential candidate against Sisi to be prosecuted or detained, while other candidates chose to withdraw in the face of what they said were threats.

A day after Anan’s arrest, human rights lawyer Khaled Ali dropped his bid.

With the exception of Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Morsi’s 2012 victory, Egypt has never had a fair presidential election.

The March election, coming four years after Sisi won 97% of the votes in his first run for office, now looks likely to be a referendum.

The puzzling thing is why the regime did not want to put on even a show of a contest, to say nothing of a real competition that could have enhanced Sisi’s legitimacy.

It “seems they don’t even care how it looks anymore,” Mohammed Anwar Sadat, nephew of the late president and a candidate who pulled out over concerns for the safety of his staff, told the Daily Telegraph.

Appearances aside, the inescapable conclusion is that the regime believes that it is sufficient to rely on fear to rule. Seven years after the ouster of long-standing dictator Hosni Mubarak, tolerance for dissent is even less than it was under his regime.

The fear factor stems not only from draconian steps the authorities take against opponents, but also from the regime projecting the image that Egypt is under mortal threat from terrorists making it is necessary to rally behind Sisi to survive. 

“The mindset of the deep state, the intelligence, the police, the army reflect their premise that Egypt is under existential threat and this is an emergency time; that it is not right to use regular measures, that emergency acts are needed,” says Yoram Meital, an Egypt specialist at Ben-Gurion University.

In the view the regime projects, there is no difference between the Moslem Brotherhood and Islamic State insurgents.

“Most of us believed Sisi would win the election and that there is no need for dramatic measures. But the regime wanted to send a message: that this is not the time for democratic struggle, that they expect Egyptians to rally behind Sisi,” Meital said.

Although the state department chastised Anan’s arrest, it came just two days after US Vice President Mike Pence met with Sisi. Pence made no public comments about the egregious human rights situation in Egypt, and it is doubtful he mentioned it in private. 

A Western observer in Cairo said that Sisi believes he has a free hand from the Trump administration for abuses against human rights and democracy, and that he also feels a degree of cover from the EU because the Egyptian navy is intercepting refugees and migrants en route to Europe.

The observer noted that parliament recently extended Egypt’s state of emergency. 

“Many people really believe a strong leader and state are the only thing between them and chaos.”

For the regime, “it is alright to hold an election during the state of emergency because you are supposed to have an election, but they feel it should be clear that we have one leader and that’s Sisi and that’s the way it will be.”

In the view of Ofir Winter, an Egypt specialist at the Institute for National Security Studies, the handling of the presidential race shows Egypt is moving backward. 

“They are going back to the authoritarian pattern. There were hopes of more democracy after the Arab Spring. But the elections prove we are very far from this goal and are becoming more distant. The situation in some way is worse than under Mubarak. The fear of every expression that deviates from the main line is much greater today.”
