  • The Trump administration has been under fire for weeks over its new “zero-tolerance” policy that has resulted in the separation of thousands of migrant children from their parents.
  • On Sunday, a handful of reporters were permitted to tour Border Patrol’s largest processing facility in McAllen, Texas, where many of the family separations are taking place.
  • The reporters said they saw hundreds of migrants — including children — in cages, sleeping on the mattresses on the ground, under foil blankets.

Public outrage has been brewing for weeks over the Trump administration’s tactic of splitting up families at the US-Mexico border under a new “zero-tolerance” policy to criminally prosecute all migrants who cross the border illegally.

Addressing the outcry, the federal Customs and Border Protection agency permitted a handful of reporters to tour its largest processing center on Sunday in McAllen, Texas, where the majority of the separations have reportedly occurred.

None of the reporters were permitted to take their own photos or interview the migrants. Instead, the government provided several handout images that were edited to blur the faces of the detained children.

Nearly 2,000 children were separated from their parents under the zero-tolerance policy in the first six weeks it was in place, the Homeland Security Department said Friday. During that time, numerous reports have circulated throughout the national media describing devastated parents, traumatized children, and dismal-looking conditions they are being held in.

The Trump administration has for the most part sought to portray the family separation tactic as a side effect of the zero-tolerance policy, not the goal of the policy itself.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen weighed in on the controversy Sunday evening, tweeting that there was no policy to separate families at the border, and that no migrants legally seeking asylum at designated ports of entry were being criminally prosecuted, despite some reports to the contrary.

“We do not have a policy of separating families at the border. Period,” Nielsen tweeted. “This misreporting by Members, press & advocacy groups must stop. It is irresponsible and unproductive. As I have said many times before, if you are seeking asylum for your family, there is no reason to break the law and illegally cross between ports of entry.”

Here’s a glimpse of what Border Patrol’s largest processing facility looks like:

The migrants are contained in large cages, sleep in mattresses on the floor of the facility, and are given foil blankets for warmth. Border Patrol agents told media that everyone in the facility is given adequate food, access to showers, clean clothing, and medical care.

On Sunday, the facility was holding 751 family members and 258 youth. The facility was divided into separate wings: one for unaccompanied children, one for adults, and one for mothers and fathers with children.

Children at the age of four and under are not separated from their parents at the McAllen facility, according to Rio Grande Sector Chief Manuel Padilla, though he said that could change. By law, children must be turned over from Border Patrol custody to shelters funded by the Health and Human Services Department within 72 hours.

  • Buffered by three oceans and the United States to the south, Canada has for decades had the luxury of being able to pick and choose its newcomers — but not since President Donald Trump started pushing against immigration.
  • More than 20,000 people, including thousands of Haitians and Nigerians and hundreds of Turks, Syrians and Eritreans, have crossed the border into Canada illegally over the past year in search of asylum.
  • This unexpected northward migration has overwhelmed Canada’s system for processing asylum claims, leading to the worst delays in years and the government spending C$ 173 million in its latest budget to pay for extra patrols at border crossings to cope with the influx.

TORONTO (Reuters) – Buffered by three oceans and the United States to the south, Canada has for decades had the luxury of being able to pick and choose its newcomers. So few asylum seekers crossed the U.S. border illegally over the years that Canada didn’t consistently track the numbers.

That has changed dramatically over the past 14 months. U.S. President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration and his move to strip Haitians, Salvadorans and others of their temporary legal status have had a broad effect on Canada’s refugee system, Reuters interviews with social service providers, government officials and a review of Canadian immigration data show.

Japan files protest against Chinese coast guard patrols near disputed islands https://briefnews.eu/japan-files-protest-against-chinese-coast-guard-patrols-near-disputed-islands/ https://briefnews.eu/japan-files-protest-against-chinese-coast-guard-patrols-near-disputed-islands/#respond Sat, 24 Jun 2017 17:25:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/japan-files-protest-against-chinese-coast-guard-patrols-near-disputed-islands/ Tokyo has lodged a protest over four Chinese coast guard vessels it says violated its waters near disputed East China Sea islands. The complaint comes a week after the Japanese Navy sent its flagship helicopter carrier close to waters claimed by Beijing.

Four China Coast Guard ships sailed into the disputed territorial waters in the East China Sea on Saturday. The vessels stayed in the area near the contested Senkaku islands (otherwise known as Diaoyu in Chinese) for about two hours and sailed out before noon, NHK reported, citing Japanese officials.

“Senkaku Islands are an inherent part of Japan’s territory and the invasion into the territorial waters was an unacceptable violation of Japanese sovereignty,” the Japanese Foreign Ministry said, as cited by the news agency.

The Senkaku islets are controlled by Japan, but also claimed by China and Taiwan – which Beijing considers part of its territory.

Tensions between the two Asian powers have heightened over the past few weeks, with both sides using their military assets in shows of force.

On Monday, the Japanese Navy’s helicopter carrier, the Izumo, arrived in Singapore to begin a four-day journey in areas adjacent to the South China Sea. The maritime deployment was meant to send a message to Beijing and demonstrate Tokyo’s military might, Japanese naval commanders said.

“We are not just here to show our presence, but from the outside that is what it looks like,” Rear Admiral Yoshihiro Goga, the commander of the mission, asserted, as cited by Reuters.

The mission also involved officers from the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) who boarded the 248-meter carrier in Singapore on Monday. Other ASEAN military representatives were present at a separate three-day event in Japan to observe a disaster relief exercise conducted by the Japanese military.

This was the first time Tokyo has staged high-profile events aimed at bolstering military-to-military ties with allied nations, Japanese defense officials said.

Another flare-up in tensions occurred in May when Chinese Coast Guard ships entered disputed waters and allegedly launched a surveillance drone. Japan scrambled two F-15 fighter jets, an E-2C early warning aircraft and an AWACS surveillance plane, to intercept the airborne target.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed deploying the drone, claiming it was being used by some sort of “relevant media” for aerial photography.

“This is not a military action, as has been hyped up by some media,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said.

“As for the so-called representations or protest by the Japanese side, of course we can’t accept it,” she added.

Indonesia eyes joint anti-ISIS patrols with Philippines & Malaysia https://briefnews.eu/indonesia-eyes-joint-anti-isis-patrols-with-philippines-malaysia/ https://briefnews.eu/indonesia-eyes-joint-anti-isis-patrols-with-philippines-malaysia/#respond Tue, 13 Jun 2017 10:52:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/indonesia-eyes-joint-anti-isis-patrols-with-philippines-malaysia/ Indonesia’s military chief says Jakarta is looking to establish joint patrols with the Philippines and Malaysia for protection against Islamic State. It comes as the military said there are terrorists’ sleeper cells all over Indonesia.

The patrols will be protecting the Indonesian territorial waters.

Indonesia’s military chief, General Gatot Nurmantyo, said that he and Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu are set to discuss the matter next week with their counterparts from Malaysia and the Philippines.

The meeting will take place on Tarakan Island, Indonesia, and will include signing an agreement to step up joint patrols.

A number of Southeast Asian states are on high alert since an Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL)-affiliated group attempted to seize the city of Marawi in the southern Philippines.

On Tuesday, the Philippines’ military declared that the terrorists were still in control of 20 percent of the city.

Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Eduardo Año told the Manila Times that the three top terrorists of the Maute Group aimed at seizing Marawi on the first day of Ramadan, planning to kill “many” non-Muslims and create an Islamic caliphate. However, they failed, and the battles with local military have already left nearly 200 terrorists dead, according to the paper.

Nevertheless, the Indonesian military chief urged everyone to be careful and on guard.

“It’s easy to jump from Marawi to Indonesia and we must all beware of sleeper cells being activated in Indonesia,” Nurmantyo told journalists in Jakarta, as cited by Reuters.

“If the Philippines wins, Indonesia would get a spill-over effect from the retreating militants, but if the Philippines loses, Mindanao [the island where Marawi is located] would be a strong regional ISIS base that threatens Indonesia among others,” another high-ranking serviceman, Army major general Ganip Warsito who monitors the areas closest to the Philippines’ border, told reporters, as cited by AP.

‘ISIS sleeper cells in almost all Indonesian provinces’

IS sleeper cells are present in almost every province across Indonesia, which is home to over 12 percent of the world’s Muslims, according to Nurmantyo.

“After observation, we see that in almost every province there are already IS cells, but they are sleeper cells,” he said.

However, the danger is that those sleeper cells “can easily join up with other radical cells,” he added, saying that the predominantly-Christian province of Papua has no IS presence.

Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia aren’t the only ones alarmed. On Monday, Singapore said it had arrested a female assistant-childcare worker who was going to join IS. She has become the first woman to be detained on such charges in the island state.

It was only in 2016 that the IS-linked terrorist attack hit the region, with four deaths after gun-and-bomb violence in Jakarta. Since then, there have been a series of minor attacks in Indonesia. The latest, a twin suicide bombing at a Jakarta bus station in May, left three policemen dead.

Beijing warns Washington against naval patrols in disputed S. Speaking at a news briefing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said that tensions in the waters have stabilized, due to the hard work of Beijing and Southeast Asia countries.

He went on to urge the US to respect the current situation by not taking “any actions that challenge China’s sovereignty and security,” Reuters reported.

The statement follows a Sunday report by the Navy Times, which stated that US Navy and Pacific Command leaders were considering freedom of navigation patrols by the San Diego-based Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group, citing unnamed defense officials.

A spokesman for Carrier Strike Group One, Dave Bennett, said the group does not discuss future operations of its units, but said the group is “on a regularly scheduled Western Pacific deployment as part of the US Pacific Fleet-led initiative to extend the command and control functions of the US 3rd Fleet.”

“US Navy aircraft carrier strike groups have patrolled the Indo-Asia-Pacific regularly and routinely for more than 70 years,” Bennett added.

The US last conducted a freedom of navigation operation in the area in October, when it sailed the guided-missile destroyer USS Decatur near the Paracel Islands, which are under Chinese control.

Although Beijing slammed the October operation as “illegal” and “provocative,” US officials denied wrongdoing, stating that America was exercising its rights to sail through international waters.

China lays claim to almost all of the resource-rich South China Sea, despite competing claims from Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Brunei. In opposition to its neighbors’ claims, China has added to regional tensions by building artificial islands in the sea, complete with military installations.

Washington has repeatedly criticized Beijing’s construction of man-made islands and its build-up of military facilities in the sea, with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson stating last month that China’s access to its artificial islands should be restricted.

Tillerson’s comments were met with backlash from the state-sanctioned Global Times newspaper, which wrote that it would take a “large-scale war” to prevent Beijing from having access to the islands, noting that any other approaches would be “foolish.”

The newspaper went on to stress that the US “has no absolute power to dominate the South China Sea.”

Last year, judges at the arbitration tribunal ruled that China’s artificial islands have caused irreparable harm to the ecosystem of the South China Sea’s Spratly Islands and breached the sovereign rights of the Philippines.

China quickly declared The Hague’s decision “null and void,” and soon started building an artificial island on Scarborough Shoal, just northeast of the Spratlys.

Japan supports but won’t join US ‘freedom of navigation’ patrols in South China Sea https://briefnews.eu/japan-supports-but-wont-join-us-freedom-of-navigation-patrols-in-south-china-sea/ https://briefnews.eu/japan-supports-but-wont-join-us-freedom-of-navigation-patrols-in-south-china-sea/#respond Mon, 06 Feb 2017 03:04:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/japan-supports-but-wont-join-us-freedom-of-navigation-patrols-in-south-china-sea/ Japanese Self Defense forces will not participate in US military patrols in the vicinity of South China Sea, the country Defense Minister clarified, a day after US and Japan agreed to enhance engagement in the disputed maritime region.

At a meeting in Tokyo on Saturday, Japan’s Defense Minister Tomomi Inada promised the newly appointed US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to enhance Japan’s role in the South China Sea.

China warns US against stirring up ‘instability’ in East China Sea

“I said that freedom of navigation operations and other actions by the US forces in the South China Sea contribute to maintaining maritime order based on the rule of law, and that I support these efforts,” Inada said Saturday during the joint press conference with Matis. “We agree that including capacity-building initiatives, we will enhance engagement in the South China Sea.”

China immediately voiced criticism over the understandings reached between US and Japan, warning the US not to stir up trouble in the region. With such developments of the events, on Sunday Tokyo somewhat backtracked on his promise, stressing that no militarily capabilities will be offered by Japan to the US.

“I told Secretary Mattis that Japan supports the US military’s freedom of navigation operation in the sea. But the SDF will not be sent to the area,” Inada said Sunday, Jiji press reports.

“Japan will play its role through defense cooperation and training,” she added, clarifying that Tokyo will also consider increasing its defense budget and reinforcing its defense capabilities.

On his first trip to Asia as secretary of defense, Mattis explicitly stated in Tokyo that the Trump administration will honor US-Japan security treaty and protect Japan against any aggression.

‘Red line’: China warned Japan against joining US freedom of navigation stunts

As tensions between US and China reach new levels, the US Navy continues to dispatch warships and military planes in the immediate proximity of the disputed islands, claiming the moves are designed to ensure the principles of freedom of navigation in international waters. Washington has also been involved in a number of military drills in the region.

The situation has been further exacerbated by China’s militarization of the South China Sea. The Spratly Islands, or Spratlys, comprise more than 750 islets, atolls and reefs, and lie off the coastlines of Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and China, with all the claimants having their own national names for the archipelago. Beijing continues to claim the reefs in defiance of a Hague International Arbitration Court verdict.

Ahead of Mattis’ visit to Japan, Beijing has once again reminded the US that it will defend the country’s territorial integrity.

“China has indisputable sovereignty over the relevant islands and reefs in the South China Sea and the adjacent waters,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told reporters Friday during a regular press briefing. “China will firmly safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea.”
