President Donald Trump appears to have been on the receiving end of a prank phone call from comedian John Melendez, while aboard Air Force One.

Melendez, host of “The Stuttering John Podcast” and a frequent guest on Howard Stern’s radio show, impersonated Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey on the call, which wound up going through the White House’s switchboard.

Equifax blames breach on a server flaw it should’ve patched https://briefnews.eu/equifax-blames-breach-on-a-server-flaw-it-shouldve-patched/ https://briefnews.eu/equifax-blames-breach-on-a-server-flaw-it-shouldve-patched/#respond Thu, 14 Sep 2017 03:53:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/equifax-blames-breach-on-a-server-flaw-it-shouldve-patched/

Equifax’s latest update on its unprecedented security breach notifies the public that its investigation has found the cause of the theft. Along with an unnamed security firm (ZDNet and others have reported it’s Mandiant) the company confirmed rumors that attackers exploited a flaw in the Apache Struts Web Framework. That bug, CVE-2017-5638, was revealed in March, but the criminals were still able to use it against Equifax to steal personally identifiable information (PII – including names, birth dates, social security numbers and more) for 143 million people in the US in mid-May.

A failure to patch a known security hole becomes more believable after hearing about an egregious security hole discovered just this weeks. Brian Krebs reports on a situation discovered by Hold Security, where Equifax’s Argentinian website left administrator access (including databases of consumer’s personal information) guarded by the ultra-difficult user/password login combo of admin/admin. It allowed anyone to add or remove employee accounts for the system, as well as see their passwords by simply viewing the source of a webpage, or access the personal data of anyone (including DNI — their equivalent to a social security number) who had ever disputed a report.

The site was taken offline after Krebs notified Equifax, but the existence of such an easily-accessed security hole is troubling. According to Reuters, over 40 US states have joined a probe against the company, and its CEO is expected to testify before a House of Representatives panel on October 3rd.

Equifax – September 13, 2017

1) Updated information on U.S. website application vulnerability.
Equifax has been intensely investigating the scope of the intrusion with the assistance of a leading, independent cybersecurity firm to determine what information was accessed and who has been impacted. We know that criminals exploited a U.S. website application vulnerability. The vulnerability was Apache Struts CVE-2017-5638. We continue to work with law enforcement as part of our criminal investigation, and have shared indicators of compromise with law enforcement.

2) Temporary interruption to credit freeze sign-up link.
Due to the high volume of security freeze requests, we experienced temporary technical difficulties and our system was offline for approximately an hour at 5PM ET on September 13, 2017 to address this issue. We apologize for any inconvenience.

3) More details on consumer exemption from arbitration clause.
Questions continue to be raised about the arbitration clause and class action waiver language that was originally in the terms of use for the free credit file monitoring and identity theft protection products that we are offering called TrustedID Premier. We have removed that language from the TrustedID Premier Terms of Use and it will not apply to the free products offered in response to the cybersecurity incident or for claims related to the cybersecurity incident itself. The arbitration language will not apply to any consumer who signed up before the language was removed.

It’s Ridiculous That Nier: Automata Still Hasn’t Been Patched On PC https://briefnews.eu/its-ridiculous-that-nier-automata-still-hasnt-been-patched-on-pc/ https://briefnews.eu/its-ridiculous-that-nier-automata-still-hasnt-been-patched-on-pc/#respond Tue, 16 May 2017 19:33:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/its-ridiculous-that-nier-automata-still-hasnt-been-patched-on-pc/

Nier: Automata came out two months ago on PC. It’s a really good game, and a clear standout during an unusually strong spring. So why the heck is the PC version still loaded with basic bugs and other problems that haven’t been patched?

I spent last weekend blasting through Nier: Automata on PC. I got endings B, C, D and E and… well, you should really play this game. It’s great. For all its positive attributes, though, it has significant issues on PC. Crashes, weird performance dips, locked white screens, and problems with funky resolutions affect even the most powerful PCs. This reddit list from a month ago catalogues many of the issues to hit PC players.

In an official statement on March 22, the developers informed players that “we appreciate all your feedback and are investigating the issues that have been reported.” Radio silence since then. Yesterday I asked the game’s publisher Square Enix if there was any news on a patch or update, and they sent me a similar quote from the development team: “We are continually working with the parties involved to investigate and improve the situation with the Steam version.”

In the meantime, they’ve released one piece of paid DLC, which included some new challenges and costumes. Each official Steam update about the DLC has been trailed by a collection of frustrated comments, presumably from people who own the game. “Patch your damn game!” “Fix the game before releasing DLC.” “Yeah, ignore the buyers even more while you hurry up to release a crap DLC to milk more money.” And so on.

Happily for those of us who just wanted to play this (again, very good!) game without waiting for a patch, a couple days after it hit Steam, a user who goes by Kaldaien released the Fix Automata Resolution (FAR) patch. Kaldaien’s patch helps Nier work in full screen at a proper resolution while also addressing some general performance issues. The patch has become indispensable for a lot of PC players, maybe even most. I certainly use it. Without the FAR patch, Nier is incapable of running in fullscreen at my monitor’s native 1440p resolution. It resizes a stretched-out, lower-resolution image, even though the menus tell me it’s running in 1440p.

Helpful as it is, FAR is not a perfect solution. My Windows mouse cursor still appears over the game after loading screens, and I have to regularly move it over to the side of the screen so it isn’t annoyingly in the way. Most times I boot up Nier, FAR requires an update, which aborts the boot process. It also gets grumpy if I try to start the game while running FRAPS, which, fine, but it’s pretty pushy about it. While FAR does seem to help with some performance issues, I still get odd hitches and frame-rate drops from time to time. Given the hardware I’m using, it doesn’t feel like those should be happening. And I’ve seen plenty of people reporting all manner of crashes and freezes that FAR doesn’t claim to address in the first place.

It’s a strange state of affairs when a fan patch remains this crucial for this long on a high profile, big budget game like Nier. Some of the issues still affecting PC gamers are the kinds of things that would be immediately patched out of most PC games. Take, for example, the fundamental thing FAR is fixing: the game is displaying at the wrong resolution. I don’t know from game development, but that doesn’t seem like a complicated problem that should require months of work in order to fix. FAR was able to remedy the issue with a minimum of fuss almost immediately after Nier hit Steam. The Borderless Gaming app also worked for me right out of the gate simply by forcing the game to display in windowed borderless mode at the proper resolution.

Nier: Automata is a hell of a game, and it’s a shame so many people have to jump through hoops just to make it run properly. A fan-made patch shouldn’t have to carry a game this big for this long.

Microsoft says it already patched ‘Shadow Brokers’ NSA leaks https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-says-it-already-patched-shadow-brokers-nsa-leaks/ https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-says-it-already-patched-shadow-brokers-nsa-leaks/#respond Sat, 15 Apr 2017 13:12:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/microsoft-says-it-already-patched-shadow-brokers-nsa-leaks/

Yesterday, the mysterious “Shadow Brokers” posted some hacking tools for Windows that were allegedly stolen from the NSA. All of them were at least a few years old, but exploited flaws in several versions of the operating system to move across networks and infect systems. early Saturday morning, Microsoft has responded with a blog post, saying it has evaluated all of the exploits listed. Its response to the release is surprisingly simple: most of them have already been fixed.

In a statement to Reuters yesterday, Microsoft said that “Other than reporters, no individual or organization has contacted us in relation to the materials released by Shadow Brokers,” but that may not be the entire truth. For three of the exploits, Microsoft says they don’t affect supported platforms (read: any operating system recent enough that it’s still receiving security updates. If you’re still using them then you need to upgrade to Windows 7 or newer). For the other seven, the company says all of them are addressed by updates and patches (notably, the patches reveal these exploits impacted Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 also).

Shadow Brokers patch details

What’s particularly curious is that four of the exploits — EternalBlue, EternalChampion, EternalRomance and EternalSynergy — were fixed in an update just last month, on March 14th. Because “The Shadow Brokers” listed what tools they had in January, it seemed like the NSA had to know this release could happen. Despite a long list of acknowledgments for security issues discovered and fixed in the March 2017 update, as @thegrugq points out, there’s no name listed for the MS17-010 patch that fixed these. As far as why, a Microsoft spokesperson tells Engadget that “We may not list an acknowledgement for reasons including reports from employees, requests for non-attribution, or if the finder doesn’t follow coordinated vulnerability disclosure.”

So it’s unclear how that happened, but the timeline looks like this: January reveal –> February Microsoft skips its usual “Patch Tuesday” security update –> March Microsoft spontaneously fixes several flaws that no one knew existed for several years prior. Clearly, someone said something. Security researcher Mustafa Al-Bassam has a possible explanation, musing that Microsoft paid up and quietly bought the exploits, while Zerodium CEO (and purchaser of vulnerabilities) Chaouki Bekrar also suggests the Shadow Brokers gave Microsoft the info.

As far as the actual issues, the moral of the story remains the same: stay on currently supported operating systems, and patch ASAP. A Microsoft project manager on the affected SMB technology recommends exactly that for prevention, along with removing or disabling the affected service. The company has made clear that organizations should stop using SMBv1, and hopefully, they heed the call.

Microsoft has already patched the NSA’s leaked Windows hacks https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-has-already-patched-the-nsas-leaked-windows-hacks/ https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-has-already-patched-the-nsas-leaked-windows-hacks/#respond Sat, 15 Apr 2017 11:09:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/microsoft-has-already-patched-the-nsas-leaked-windows-hacks/

Microsoft says it has already patched the Windows exploits released by the Shadow Brokers group. The hacking tools, likely originating from the NSA, were released online yesterday, and Microsoft was able to test and confirm patches are already available for all currently supported versions of Windows. That does mean that older Windows XP or Windows Vista systems could still be vulnerable to three of the exploits released, but it’s unlikely that Microsoft will supply patches for these older versions of Windows as they’re already unsupported.

Microsoft’s response comes hours after unnecessary fear from several security researchers, including one who advised Windows users to turn off their machines for the weekend. Even NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden weighed in on the exploits, claiming that the “NSA did not warn Microsoft” about the leaked exploits. Microsoft itself seems to imply that the NSA didn’t warn the company. “Other than reporters, no individual or organization has contacted us in relation to the materials released by Shadow Brokers,” says a Microsoft spokesperson in a statement to Reuters.

However, one security researcher, the grugq, claims that the NSA may have actually reported some of the bugs themselves. While Microsoft always acknowledges the source of security flaw reports, the grugq noticed there are no acknowledgements for patches (MS17-010) issued last month that fix some of the leaked NSA exploits. It’s possible that The Shadow Brokers or another group / individual tipped Microsoft to them in advance. Microsoft mysteriously delayed its Patch Tuesday release in February by a month in an unprecedented move, blaming a “last minute issue”. March’s Patch Tuesday included fixes for these leaked NSA exploits.

Either way, if you’re running Windows 7 or above then you’re safe from this round of exploits as long as you’ve applied all updates from Windows Update. If you’re still running Windows XP or Windows Vista then it’s time to look at something more modern as you’re open to these security flaws and many more that will remain unpatched and exploited.

Update, 6:15AM ET: Article updated with a statement from Microsoft.
