Passengers on an American Airlines plane helped cabin crew restrain a man after he allegedly punched a flight attendant in the back of the head on Wednesday, officials said.
A Department of Justice news release disclosed that passengers aboard the flight to Los Angeles airport helped to apprehend Alexander Tung Cuu Le after he was seen striking the flight attendant.
An FBI affidavit said Le was then moved to another row over safety concerns and had his hands and legs cuffed. Le continuously unbuckled his seatbelt, leading crew members to further restrain him with seatbelt extenders.
The 33-year-old from Westminster in Orange County, California was detained upon landing at LAX and taken into custody by the Federal Bureau of Investigation because the incident occurred in the air.
Le was charged with one count of interference with flight crew members and attendants, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, the DOJ said.
He appeared in court in Los Angeles on Thursday, but the matter was adjourned until Monday morning for a detention hearing and he remained in custody.
According to the DoJ release, Le reportedly began to act erratically shortly after departing Los Cabos in Mexico, loitering away from his seat and making gestures toward crew that were implied as threats of violence.
After assaulting the flight attendant, Le fled toward the back of the plane where he was apprehended by several passengers near an exit row, the DoJ stated.
The FBI affidavit stated that the flight attendant seen being struck by Le was left unable to carry out their normal duties and was taken to hospital after the flight landed.
"Additionally, the crew of AA 377 had to focus on restraining Le, which interfered with their duties and reduced their ability to provide service to over 100 passengers," it said.
Even after Le was restrained, the crew was still concerned about his behavior. One flight attendant was "shaking so much that she had difficulty performing her duties" and stated that the flight was "the longest hour and 58 minutes of my life," according to the affidavit.
American Airlines has banned Le from its flights.
"The individual involved in this incident will never be allowed to travel with us in the future, and we will work closely with law enforcement in their investigation," AA said in a statement Thursday.
American Airlines did not immediately respond to Insider's request for additional comment about the incident.

Some pilots were sent a mid-flight bulletin announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday afternoon.
The note, issued through the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System, offered a choice on whether to announce the death of the monarch to crew and passengers on board.
According to an image shared by a British pilot on Twitter, the bulletin read: "ATTN all aircraft. To be read at your discretion it is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this very difficult time. Sent 17592/08."
The pilot, who goes by the username Katie Pilot, did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
Britain's longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away in Balmoral Castle on September 8. The news was first announced by the royal family on Twitter, quickly followed by media outlets.
The pilot said who shared the image said she received the news while flying "somewhere over France," adding it was a "somewhat surreal and extremely sad moment."
She said in a Twitter comment that she opted not to announce the Queen's death to the rest of the plane as the flight had on-board WiFi and the news was already making its way around the cabin.
A pilot on a British Airways flight traveling from Miami to London chose to utilize the plane's announcement system to relay the news.
In a video taken by a passenger and reported by E! News, the pilot can be heard telling people mid-flight: "This is an incredibly sad day for all of us on British Airways. Our thoughts are with the entire royal family as we grieve her immeasurable loss."
He can also be heard inviting passengers to hold a moment of silence for the late Queen.

Flights see travellers squashed into seats for many hours and for those who are longer or larger than the average sometimes struggle. Passengers are advised to stretch in their seat or walk around the aircraft during long flights to minimise the risk of blood clots. However, one flier with Israeli carrier Israir Airlines, came up with an inventive way to keep moving during a trip. The surprising move shocked passengers, with many claiming it showed very bad travel etiquette.
The photo was shared by Instagram account passengershaming and has accrued thousands of likes.
The snap captures the plane cabin of the flight – but in the aisle, the legs of a person can be seen sticking up into the air.
They appear to be doing a handstand between the seats, in a very unusual travel move.
The flier is wearing pale blue jeans and no shoes. Their sock-covered feet reach so high up they are touching the roof of the cabin.
Only the face of someone further down the aisle can be seen and they appear to be grinning.
However, it’s unclear if the smile is at the yoga antics or something else.
A cabin crew who was on the Israir flight took to Instagram to explain what had happened.
She pointed out that this sort of behaviour is unacceptable on board a flight and warns others against copying the passenger.
Flight attendant Julietta Weinberg posted: “I was one of the crew members on that flight and I would like to explain you that we did not allow this to happen and we spoke to that person and asked not to do that, but this handstand came over and over at least two times during the flight.
“So the first purpose of that photo was to make evidence in case that this person would damage the ceiling or damage his self and then make a different statement and sue the company, and the second purpose of that was to show others – what not to do during the flight (sic).”
Others have shared their own thoughts on the picture. Some were impressed and others were alarmed.
“I actually want to be friends with this guy,” one person wrote. “That’s fantastic and freaking funny,” another wrote.
Some were much more critical: “If you want to do your ‘yoga routine’ on an airplane then you should fly private,” one posted. Another commented: “Another opportunity to say look at me look at me.”
Some people even joked that they would have pushed them over if they’d been on the flight.
This is far from the first time passengers have been spotted doing bizarre activities on planes.
On another occasion, a male flier was seen playing the flute during a flight. He appears to be playing from a sheet of music in front of him and the instrument is raised to his lips.
To add to the comedy of the unusual scene, the man has long hair and a beard leading some to compare him to Jesus Christ.
Flights can be made much worse if fellow passengers make a lot of noise and are disruptive. Loud talking and crying children are just two obvious sources of frustration for travellers. However, passengers on one flight were no doubt flabbergasted when they spotted a man making a very unusual noise indeed. Rather than keeping himself busy with a normal plane activity such as listening to music – he decided to make music.
The passenger was photographed playing the flute as he sat in his plane seat.

To add to the comedy of the unusual scene, the man has long hair and a beard leading some to compare him to Jesus Christ.
The photo was shared by Instagram account passengershaming with the caption: “On Sundays we post Jesus Flute Dude.”
The image has accrued thousands of likes. Some Instagram users have criticised the man for disruption while others have been impressed.
“Why. Why Jesus why,” one person wrote, “That would be horrible,” another commented.
A third wrote on Instagram” “I love the flute…is Jesus any good?’”
Some viewers tried to see the positive side of the situation.”Could be worse. He could have had a piccolo,” one posted.
Another wrote: “Unless his playing is, like, particularly super bad, I’d rather sit next to Jesusflutedude than somebody with their electronic music device cranked way up high. Especially if he takes requests. Even if all he plays are hymns.”

In another image shared by passengershaming a man was seen doing something very unusual with his food.
The photo captured him attempting to heat up a slice of pizza using the reading light.
He can be seen reaching up towards the roof of the cabin with the pizza in his hand.
The savvy passenger holds it close to the bright light in the hopes of warming up his meal.
Other passengers can be seen in front of the traveller but don’t seem to have spotted his travel hack.
In reality, it’s unlikely the cooking attempt worked, but Instagram users were nevertheless impressed.
Flights welcome all sorts of people on board a plane and passengers often spot their fellow fliers doing intriguing things. Travellers on one plane couldn’t believe it when they spotted a man employing a clever travel hack. A hilarious photo of the incident was shared by Instagram account passengershaming. It shows a man apparently using the overhead light of his seat in an intriguing way.

Instagram account passengershaming captioned the funny photo: “Heating up leftover pizza with an airplane reading light? Genius!!” They even included the entertaining hashtag “#pleasebesingleandDMme.”
“The guy is a genius,” one person agreed. Another added: “So that’s how you get decent airplane food! #lifehacks.”
Others Instagram users were less impressed, however, and pointed out that the act was rather unpleasant.
“Ugh! The germs. The grease. The smell. Ugh,” one wrote. Another posted: “Gross! Cold pizza is way better than lukewarm!”
This is far from the first time someone has spotted trying to use the plane amenities in an unusual way.
A surprising viral video captured a woman carrying out a very bizarre activity on a plane.
She was doing something most people would only ever do in private – but shows no shame for the unorthodox action.
The woman was drying a pair of pants under the air vent on the aircraft ceiling. She was holding up the black and white underwear right next to the channel of air.
On another occasion, a photo shared by passengershaming showed a woman trying to stave off the cold by wearing a transparent plastic bag over her head.
This action is highly dangerous, making it alarming she has chosen such a rash way of keeping warm.
Suffocation can happen when a plastic bag is out over the head because the plastic is flexible enough to form an airtight seal around the nose and mouth.

The current political deliberations, widely centred on potential outcomes of a Brexit deal, no deal, and a vote of no confidence in the UK leader, will not impact passengers travelling on cruise liners, it has been confirmed. The messy negotiations on Tuesday, saw the Conservative leader’s Brexit divorce proposal shunned in what was the worst ever House of Commons defeat suffered by a head of Government. Mrs May’s suggestions received the backing of 230 members, yet 432 – including some in her own party – turned against her to vote down the proposal. The scale of the defeat sparked Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to table a motion of no confidence in Mrs May’s Government.
Throughout the Brexit chaos, UK residents have been worried about the impact severing ties with the European Union will have on travel.
There have been suggestions airline fees will rise, queues at security will lengthen and holidaymakers will be offered poorer protection while overseas.
Yet apparently bucking the trend, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) UK & Ireland has predicted a rise in the number of British cruise passengers in 2019, despite the uncertainty surrounding Brexit.
Meanwhile, both the British Government and Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) have also provided reassurances about travel arrangements taking place after 29 March 2019.
They have stated that, from 29 March, if there is a no-deal Brexit, cruise operations will continue as they are.
Cruise passengers departing from a UK port be protected by EU regulation on maritime passengers’ rights as it will be brought into UK law.
Regardless of the outcome of Brexit, aeroplanes will continue to fly between the UK and EU.
Andy Harmer, director of CLIA UK & Ireland, said: “We welcome this advice and hopes it reassures UK and EU citizens planning a cruise holiday.
“2019 is an exciting time for the cruise industry with 24 new ships being delivered for ocean and river cruise lines, and many existing ships being renovated and refurbished to a standard that rivals even the finest land-based hotels.
“Never before has there been so much choice for customers in terms of style of ship, itinerary and onboard experiences.”
He added: “The global fleet development, new destinations to explore, plus recent reassurances from authorities surrounding Brexit, put British travel agents in a great position to tempt their customers to choose cruise in 2019, whether it’s for the first time, or as repeat guests.”
In further positive news for the cruise sector, the number of cruises between January and September 2018 rose by 2.1 percent from 1.31million to 1.34million in 2018. Experts have insisted the sector is strong going into 2019.
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen what Brexit outcome will be reached by the UK Parliament as negotiations continue.
Leader of the Opposition, Jeremy Corbyn, has tabled a second vote of no confidence in Theresa May’s Government.
Ryanair has been called on to refund passengers affected by a name-change penalty in a letter from money saving expert Martin Lewis to Michael O’Leary, the Chief Executive of Ryanair. Lewis has presented the Chief Executives of Ryanair and its regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), with a dossier of over 160 Ryanair passengers hit by the name-change ‘glitch,’ costing many customers £115 each to fix. MoneySavingExpert.com first reported the issue in December 2018 and has since received complaints from angry customers travelling with partners or friends with different surnames. They said they have been penalised after their companions’ surnames were automatically changed even though the correct details were entered at the time of booking.
If they didn’t spot the error within Ryanair’s 24-hour grace period, they were slapped with a £115 charge to change it in order to travel.
According to Lewis, Ryanair “has insisted that there isn’t a problem despite compelling evidence, and has said it won’t refund customers for what appears to be its own mistake.”
In the letter itself, Lewis wrote: “The engagement and response we’ve had from Ryanair has been flaccid; there seems to be a blasé attitude to these customers who feel hard done by.”
He added: “The behaviour of your firm, in refusing to refund customers who have been affected, yet with them having no choice but to pay up if they want to travel, does not seem to be the behaviour of a ‘nice airline’.
“I am sure you will be shocked to hear this is happening- and will want to rectify it – rather than waiting for regulatory engagement.”
Express.co.uk has contacted Ryanair for further comment on the situation.
Ryanair passengers have recently dubbed the budget airline the worst in the UK in a scathing Which? survey.
It marks the sixth consecutive year the firm has been granted the derogatory title by the consumer champion watchdog.
Passenger gripes ranged from seat comfort, food and drink options and boarding process, all of which received the lowest possible ratings.
The totals showed a dismal customer service score of 40 per cent – with many vehemently claiming they will not fly in the bright blue and white planes again.
More than 70 per cent of those grilled were adamant they would not plump for the airline, with fellow budget options easyJet and Jet2 getting the nod.
The low-cost airline has recently – and quietly – increased their hand luggage charges just two months after strict new rules were introduced in November.
Previously, passengers who wanted to bring more luggage had to pay £6 extra to benefit from priority boarding, which they could bring both a small bag and a larger bag for the overhead locker.
Ryanair travellers could also pay to take a suitcase on board that measured no more than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. It couldn’t more than 10kg and would be left at the airport drop desk. Previously this check-in bag cost £8 during booking or £10 after booking.
However, passengers booking now will find, after going through the flight selection process, that priority boarding has increased by £2 to £8.
Meanwhile, the extra 10kg suitcase will now cost £10 during booking.
These new sums can only be seen once flights have been selected. Ryanair’s cabin bag policy page continues to show the prices of ‘From £6’ for priority and ‘From £8’ for the 10kg bag.

Kia is preparing for a future with autonomous cars and at CES it will be showing off its Real-time Emotion Adaptive Driving System, or R.E.A.D. The company says its AI-based system can adapt vehicle interiors to a passenger’s emotional state by using sensors to monitor their facial expressions, heart rate and electrodermal activity. Based on its readings, the R.E.A.D. System personalizes the cabin interior, taking into account all five senses. Part of the system also includes music-response vibration seats, which match seat vibrations to the frequencies of whatever music is being played in the cabin. The seats can also provide massages and haptic alerts connected to the vehicle’s driver-assist system.
Additionally, Kia will be revealing V-Touch — gesture control technology that uses a 3D camera to track eye and finger motions and allows riders to manage in-car features like lighting, air-conditioning and entertainment systems without the use of physical buttons or touchscreens.
Kia will demonstrate this technology — as well as a four-wheel electric cycle SEED Car concept — at CES with one-person, two-person and four-person cockpits. “Kia considers the interactive cabin a focal point for future mobility, and the R.E.A.D. System represents a convergence of cutting-edge vehicle control technology and AI-based emotional intelligence,” Hyundai Motor Group’s head of research and development, Albert Biermann, said in a statement. “The system enables continuous communication between driver and vehicle through the unspoken language of ‘feeling’, thereby providing an optimal, human-sense oriented space for the driver in real-time”
