Landing a plum role on the buzzy 2011 TV project “was like a dream come true,” Pascal told our sister site Variety.
The David E. Kelley-penned pilot starred Palicki as Wonder Woman aka Themyscira Industries CEO Diana Themyscira aka mild-mannered Diana Prince (yes, she had two alter egos, oof). Justin Bruening (All My Children) co-starred as Steve Trevor, an Army vet who now works in the Justice Department, while Elizabeth Hurley (The Royals) played nemesis Veronica Cale.
Pascal, whose main TV credits at that point included arcs on The Good Wife and FX’s Lights Out, played Ed Indelicato, an LAPD detective who liaisoned with the city’s local superhero.
“It was like a dream come true,” the star of The Mandalorian recalled for Variety. “David E. Kelley’s influence on television when I was freshly out of college was so huge, and I watched every episode of [Palicki’]s Friday Night Lights. I also thought that whether it was good or not, it would definitely get picked up. So that would change my financial situation significantly, even if it was half a season before it got canceled. But it didn’t even get picked up.”
As for whether Wonder Woman 1984 helmer Patty Jenkins knew of his previous run-in with the Amazonian princess at the time he was cast as one of the sequel’s two villains, Max Lord, he was unsure, shrugging, “They must have either not have known or not cared.”
Shortly after NBC cut bait on its Wonder Woman series, TVLine asked then-network chief Robert Greenblatt about the decision. “With this kind of audience, you have to get these things absolutely right; there’s no room for error. At the end of the day, I didn’t think we had done that,” he explained. “The action is amazing. Adrianne Palicki is beautiful. Elizabeth Hurley is fantastic. It’s like any creative thing — there are going to be people who like it or don’t like it.”

Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins took to Twitter to reveal our first look at Pedro Pascal in the superhero sequel, and he looks…different. Pascal is almost unrecognizable, decked-out in extreme ’80s fashions and extreme ’80s hair. But who is he playing? See the Wonder Woman 1984 first look below.

There he is, in all his glory. This looks more like a still from American Hustle or The Wolf of Wall Street than Wonder Woman 1984, and I dig it. Pascal posted the image to his Instagram account, with the caption “Power suit. Power hair.”
Now that we know what the Game of Thrones and Narcos actor looks like in the film, it’s time to ask: who is he playing? Just based on his appearance him, I’m going to jump to conclusions and assume Pascal is playing some sort of villain. That’s just the vibe I’m getting here. We know the main villain in the film will be Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be other antagonists for Wonder Woman to face off against.
The fact that Pascal’s character is shown on a 1980s-style TV is interesting as well. It likely ties into the previously released image of Gal Gadot‘s Diana gazing into a wall of TV monitors.

But what’s the connection? Is Jenkins going for a very literal 1984 reference here, and featuring a subplot about how “Big Brother” is always watching? Or am I reading too much into things? None of this speculation tells who Pascal is playing, of course. One theory that’s already floating around is that the actor is portraying DC comics villain Maxwell Lord. Per the DC Wiki, “Maxwell Lord was introduced as an up-and-coming young executive at a major corporation known as Innovative Concepts who would indulge in any means necessary to reach the top of the corporation. To that end, Lord established a friendship with the CEO of the corporation and became his protege to rise in the ranks of the corporation before concocting a plan to murder the CEO for his position.”
Pascal’s ’80s businessman attire could certainly be pointing in the direction of Maxwell Lord, but how and why the character fits into the story remains to be seen. Of course, there’s always a chance Pascal is playing a brand new character that Jenkins and company invented for the film. When all is said and done, Pascal’s character is just another mystery to add to the growing pile. There’s so much we don’t know about Wonder Woman 1984, including just how and why Chris Pine‘s deceased Steve Trevor ends up still alive, and transported to the 1980s. During the Wonder Woman 1984 Hall H Comic-Con panel, Jenkins said that Trevor’s resurrection is a “very important part” of the film, but wouldn’t provide specifics. She’s crafty like that.
Wonder Woman 1984 opens on November 1, 2019.

The Wonder Woman 2 cast is growing. Game of Thrones actor Pedro Pascal is the latest addition to the superhero sequel, joining star Gal Gadot and recently cast Kristen Wiig. Patty Jenkins is returning to helm the follow-up to 2017’s Wonder Woman.
Variety has confirmed that Pedro Pascal has joined the cast of Wonder Woman 2 in an undisclosed role. This makes Pascal the latest new addition to the highly anticipated sequel. Recently, Kristen Wiig officially joined the cast as the film’s villain, Cheetah. Pascal broke out in a big way due to a scene-stealing turn on Game of Thrones. Since then, he’s appeared on the Netflix series Narcos, and was the sole redeeming factor in the otherwise dreadful Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
There’s a lot of hype surrounding Wonder Woman 2. The first film was the sole critically-acclaimed entry in the DCEU, and was the second biggest box officer earner (behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice). The majority of details about the super-sequel are being kept under wraps. Director Patty Jenkins has said the sequel will be “totally different” than the first Wonder Woman, but “with a lot of the same, similar like things that we love, but it’s its own movie completely, so it’s not ‘two’ to us. It’s an entirely new adventure together that we couldn’t be luckier [to do].”
In June of last year, DC Films chairman Geoff Johns confirmed he was writing a treatment for the sequel with Jenkins:
“Patty and I are writing the treatment right now. The goal is to make another great Wonder Woman film. I had a blast making it with Patty the first time. We’ve got a cool idea for the second one.”
There’s no word on the time period of the sequel. The first Wonder Woman was primarily set during World War I. Since then, there have been rumors that the sequel might be set in the present day, or possibly the 1980s. None of this has yet to be confirmed, so feel free to speculate wildly.
One thing we can likely expect, according to Patty Jenkins, is an “enjoyable fun movie”. Speaking with Variety’s Playback podcast, Jenkins said:
“[Wonder Woman 2 is] really still going to other values of hers, and a similar formula insofar as making a great, enjoyable fun movie but that ultimately in its third act turns some very big issues, and a very big experience that will aim to have slightly more weight and profundity than it has to have. Because that’s a formula that I really like, and I like the idea of taking somebody on a very solid, great journey but that arrives at a bigger question being answered. So it’s like that but because she is Wonder Woman and she’s here now and she’s fully developed, it’s got great fun from the start and great big superhero presence from the start, and is funny and a great love story again and a couple new unbelievable characters who I’m so excited about, who are very different than were in the last movie.”

The moment Pedro Pascal strutted on screen in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, he proved he was ready to be a bonafide movie star. The actor has been stealing scenes since he first appeared in Game of Thrones, going on to play a starring role in the Netflix series Narcos. Now, he will finally be the lead in a feature film.
Prospect, a science-fiction “space Western” from directors Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell, stars Pascal as a father who travels with his teen daughter (Sophie Thatcher) to mine for riches on a toxic alien planet. The film will premiere at the SXSW festival later this week. See the first Prospect trailer below.
The trailer is short in plot but long on mood. There are eerie shots of the dense woods that cover the toxic alien planet the father-daughter pair are mining. And despite being an independent film, the effects look impressive, with Pascal’s character weeding out a strange substance from the ground. Soon, the moodiness is traded for thrills, as Pascal and Thatcher’s characters meet their competition in the harsh terrain. Someone is stabbed, machinery malfunctions, and Thatcher pulls a gun on her father. It’s definitely an intriguing trailer that plays to its strengths.
The film also stars Jay Duplass, Andre Royo, Sheila Vand, and Anwan Glover.
Prospect is based off Early and Caldwell’s chilling short film of the same name. Funded by Kickstarter and released in 2014, the ambitious coming-of-age sci-fi short captured the attention of festival-goers at SXSW. Now, its feature film version is premiering at the very same festival.
You can see the short film below.
Here is the synopsis for Prospect:
A teenage girl and her father travel to a remote alien moon, aiming to strike it rich. They’ve secured a contract to harvest a large deposit of the elusive gems hidden in the depths of the moon’s toxic forest. But there are others roving the wilderness and the job quickly devolves into a fight to survive. Forced to contend not only with the forest’s other ruthless inhabitants, but with her own father’s greed-addled judgment, the girl finds she must carve her own path to escape.
Prospect will screen at SXSW at the Alamo Lamar theater on March 10 and 11, and at the Stateside Theatre on March 14. You can find more information here.

A couple weeks back, I was lucky to jump on the phone with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and Sony studio head turned producer Amy Pascal to talk about their new film Spider-Man: Homecoming. I ask the duo about the lessons they learned from the last Amazing Spider-Man franchise failure, the influence of Back to the Future, was the Trump campaign an influence on the film’s villain, why they watched an Akira Kurosawa movie in prep for the film, and we discuss what the end credits scene means. All this and more. Read the full Spider-Man: Homecoming Interview, after the jump.
Kevin Feige: Hi, Peter, how are you?
Peter Sciretta: Good. How are you?
Kevin: I can’t remember the last time we did a phoner together. I don’t like it.
Peter: I don’t think we’ve actually done a phoner before. Yeah, I don’t like it either. I hate phoners. Would rather do this in person but couldn’t travel to New York.
Amy Pascal: Hi, Peter.
Peter: Hi Amy. Congratulations on the movie, I love it.
Amy: Oh that’s wonderful.
Peter: It, I’ll start off with the hard question.
Amy: Oh good.
Peter: It seems like fans didn’t connect with the last version of Spider-Man. What lessons did you both take from that and apply to this?
Kevin: For me it was yes, you take lessons from every movie you see really, but it was less about that and more about… and this is what Amy and I talked about in her office and in her house when we were initially discussing this.
Amy: Figuring it out.
Kevin: This is the first time Spidey can interact with all the characters that he’s been with in the comics his entire existence. And it was always about the first, the first time he actually is in our universe. The first time you could see him go and yearn to be part of a superhero team, which he did, I think maybe, in his very first issue. The first time that he was age appropriate for the entire film. Which added to the dichotomy of him versus the other heroes that we’ve established. So from my point of view it was really it was less about avoid this or avoid that, it was more about hey, for the first time if we make the movie together, we could do these things. And that is always what inspired our conversations.
Amy: It was always about that opportunity to put him in the world that he was meant to be in.
Kevin: Yeah. And that being said, I do think it’s fair to say that when we were doing the first Spider-Man film the notion of seeing a Spider-Man soar through the skyscrapers of New York City in a single camera shot was unbelievably amazing and exciting and had never been done before. It’s now been done.
Amy: Yeah, but now we have to see something else.
Kevin: Yeah, so that, so the notion of a field trip to D.C., a chase sequence through the suburbs, I think that probably informed the desire to showcase different things. And again, that came from the comics too. Great issue in the comics where he’s stuck in the suburbs and has to ride the bus, top of a bus to get home when he doesn’t have the buildings around. As you see in Homecoming, he leaps off the roof of a house, shoots his web and then you get behind him and it keeps going and doesn’t connect to anything because he’s in a big golf course and he just has to run.
Peter: I love that aspect of the film. I know you have a basis in the comics, but it almost seems like this film is more influenced by like 1980’s high school movies than the comics. And I know Kevin is a big Back to the Future fan. I saw a lot of Marty McFly in there I think.
Kevin: I love that you say that and people say high school movie and of course John Hughes was a touch point for us. How could it not be? We grew up with it. But Back to the Future, yes, he’s a high school kid, nobody would call Back to the Future a high school movie, they call it a great time travel adventure. This is a great superhero adventure with that backdrop. But you’re right the moment and that was not intentional necessarily, but if you look at… a bunch of Star Wars action figures in Peter’s and some vintage action figures too that I think he got when he was dumpster diving in the background of Peter’s room in there now. And also there’s that moment where Ned has discovered his secret, he’s got no shirt on, May is banging at the door, he turns around and he goes, Aunt May, just a minute and I went oh my God, he’s Marty. He’s Marty. And that’s just part of the charm of Tom Holland. I don’t think that was intentionally channeling that for him. I think he just shares in common with Michael J. Fox at that time. The sort of exuberant, youthful exuberance of the position he’s in.
Peter: Totally. And even in his suit and how it wraps around him reminded me of Back to the Future Part II. But enough about that.
Amy: Isn’t it great, that scene?
Kevin: I clearly never thought about that until now, but that’s awesome. Yeah.
Peter: Can you talk about Jennifer Connelly as the Suit Lady, because I don’t think I heard you talk about casting her yet anywhere.
Kevin: Peter, well done. I’ve been doing this for two days–
Amy: We haven’t heard one person say that. Whoa. That’s a little nitwit.
Kevin: They had this conceit and it actually grew in post that he would interact with his suit and we liked the idea of it being a female voice that Peter, that Tony’s programmed into it. And it actually came about pretty quickly. We were talking about who could do it. And she popped up for two, for three reasons. One, she’s a great actress, can do anything she wants. Two, she inhabits some of the classic ’80s films that helped to inspire us behind the scenes. And three and most meta, she’s married to Jarvis.
Amy: Right. So that is pretty great.
Peter: That is great. I didn’t even think about that.
Amy: Nobody’s picked up on it.
Kevin: Yup.
