THE NOTION that China’s economy, though nominally communist, resembles that of the Soviet Union seems on its face absurd. The fall of the Iron Curtain revealed a rusted shell of a country, incapable of manufacturing goods the West might want. China is the world’s biggest exporter; its cities are jammed with gleaming skyscrapers. Soviet citizens went without consumer luxuries or bought them dearly on the black market. China’s growing middle class can choose from scores of designer brands at the local mall.
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, formed five years after the Russian revolution of 1917, came apart at age 69. At 69, the People’s Republic of China seems destined for world domination. Yet the Soviet economy seemed modern and dynamic once. China’s GDPper person, at purchasing-power parity, remains below that in the Soviet Union on the eve of its collapse. And despite its capitalist trappings, the Communist Party is piloting China’s economy in a direction…

Harry Maguire and Dele Alli struck either side of half-time, both with headers, as nerveless England coasted to a routine 2-0 win.
Gareth Southgate’s side will now face either Croatia or holders Russia in Moscow on Wednesday at 7pm. The two meet tonight.
It’s only the third time England have reached the last four and their first since Italia 90 they have made the semis.
Boss Southgate punched the air at the final whistle and conducted the England fans in a rendition of his own song, to the tune of Atomic Kitten’s smash hit Whole Again, in joyous scenes after.
Southgate admitted playing against Russia in Moscow would be “an incredible game” to be involved in but promised to take things one step at a time as he bids to bring football home.
“We will enjoy tonight, I hope everybody at home enjoys tonight because as we know, it is not very often that it has happened,” he said.

“All I know is the managers who have got to semi-finals (with England) are ones I hugely respect and to be involved at this stage with England now is an incredible feeling.
He then paid tribute to his players and said: “I cant speak highly enough of the whole squad and whole group of staff because it is so united in there.
“The level of work has been great and their commitment to each other, you don’t get through with just 11 players. They are all top people and are the reason we are in the semi-final just as much as any other.”
England’s tally of 11 goals equals that set at the 1966 World Cup, which they won as hosts.
Captain Harry Kane, who leads the race for the 2018 Golden Boot with six goals, is determined not to get carried away.
“We know there is still a big game ahead with the semi-final, but we are feeling good and confident,” the Tottenham forward said on BBC One.
“We just have to go again, keep doing what we are doing and make the country proud.”

Kane added: “So much preparation went into it and I thought we were fantastic today.
“It was a difficult game, Sweden made it tough – long balls, different to what we have faced so far.”
While goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who made some important saves as Sweden rallied in the second half, felt England had shown a mental strength to progress.
“We knew it was going to be difficult and what they bring to the party, and we managed it very well,” he said.
“It just showed how our ability is coming out and also the mental part of our game.
“We can go and create our own history, but now it is about rest and recovery for the next game.

Dele Alli nodded England into a 2-0 lead over Sweden
“It is not going to be easy, but we will work hard enough and our ability should show.”
Before England’s second, Sweden missed a golden opportunity to level right after the restart but Pickford, who was named man of the match, made an outstanding save, palming Marcus Berg’s close-range header away.
He denied the Swedes several more times in the second half and was praised by their coach Janne Andersson.
“The (England) keeper made great saves yet again. You have to respect you are faced with a good keeper,” Andersson said.
“England are absolutely good enough to win the World Cup. They are forceful and well organised. Congratulations to both the team and the coach. They are a good side, who did not give a lot of openings.”

Harry Maguire scored the first in England’s 2-0 win over Sweden
At Wimbledon, fans broke into a “football’s coming home” chant at Wimbledon after learning of England’s opening goal against Sweden – and celebrated again at the final whistle.
Simona Halep’s match against Hsieh Su-wei had just finished when Harry Maguire headed England ahead, prompting some spectators to burst into song in the Court One stands.
There were then loud cheers on Centre Court when the World Cup match ended in Samara, which came just after Angelique Kerber’s match with Naomi Osaka had reached a conclusion.
But England’s appearance in their first World Cup quarter-final since 2006 otherwise hardly registered at the home of tennis.
Wimbledon chiefs once again stuck to their guns, refusing to show the football on the big screen in front of Henman Hill.
A smattering of people in England shirts were on the hill among the thousands watching Rafael Nadal’s win over Alex De Minaur on the screen.
Over on Court 14 a man sporting a retro 1982 England shirt stared at his phone while his companions watched the men’s doubles.
Sir Bobby Charlton, an England World Cup hero of 1966, was in the Royal Box throughout, watching Nadal’s match and Kerber’s win.
Nadal came off Centre Court at around 3.20pm, and admitted afterwards: “I am excited to watch some football, and to see if it is coming home or not.”
The Spaniard did not hold his media conference until around 4.50pm, once England were assured of victory.
Wimbledon’s policy of not showing the football did not extend to the media centre, where some journalists kept an eye on the World Cup action.
Window blinds were closed to prevent fans peering in to watch.

England fans celebrate wildly after the win over Sweden
Two summer ago Harry Maguire was supping pints and singing songs in the bars of France with his mates form Sheffield as England flopped in 2016.
The big defender – then with Hull in the Championship – could not have dreamed then that he would be the toast of the country as he set the Three Lions on the way to their first World Cup semi-final in 28 years and fuelled the belief that it really is coming home.
Alan Shearer said before the game this was a career-defining, life-changing moment for England’s players.
After all, England have only ever progressed past the last eight stage only TWICE in their 14 World Cup finals tournaments.
Now Maguire’s first international goal will be remembered just like Geoff Hurst’s winner in the 1966 quarter-final against Argentina and Gary Lineker’s two penalties and David Platt’s headed against Cameroon in 1990.
And it could not have been better timed as England had laboured to break down a negative Swedish team that set out as if they were happy to take it to penalties.
Inevitably, it came from another well-worked England set-piece – that’s nine out of 11 goals so far stemming from set-plays.
No wonder they call him “Slab Head.” With his team-mates making decoy runs all over the box, there was no stopping Maguire as he got the run on Emil Forsberg and planted a thumping header into the corner of the net.
Quite part from giving Gareth Southgate’s team the lead, it gave them the confidence to stamp their superiority on an average Swedish team.
Player for player, England knew they were better than Janne Andersson’s workmanlike but didn’t seem to believe it for the first half an hour.
But after Maguire’s goal they were a team transformed. They should have been two-up but for Raheem Sterling’s continuing hesitation in front of goal.

World Cup: Harry Maguire celebrates after helping into into the World Cup semis
The worry for England was that in all their four previous tournament clashes with Sweden they had always thrown away the lead. And but for Jordan Pickford’s save from Marcus Berg’s header early in the second half it might have happened again.
Even when Dele Alli gave England the cushion of a two-goal lead with another header, this time from Jesse Lingard’s cross, England needed Pickford to twice deny the Swedes.
Apart from those two scares though England were in control as they secured last four clash with Russia or Croatia in Moscow’s Luznicki Stadium on Wednesday.
If they get through that one – and who would bet against it now – they will book their place in the same stadium four days later and be right on the brink of ending 52 years of hurt.
They also did the world a favour as they buried their bogey team. Sweden might have beautiful women but their football is ugly.
The city of Samara built the Soviet rockets in the space race days of the 1960sa nd the impressive Cosmos stadium here is designed like a huge flying saucer, a homage to the space-age heritage.
It’s fair to say that Southgate’s rocket men had stars in their eyes last night as the country went into orbit.
Never mind coming home, England are heading over the moon.
England reached the World Cup semi-final for the first time since Italia 90 as Harry Maguire and Dele Alli struck either side of the interval to beat Sweden in Samara.
Gareth Southgate’s side will now face either Croatia or holders Russia in Moscow on Wednesday after overcoming a stubborn Sweden challenge in this quarter-final, with help from a magnificent display by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr have announced that their political blocs will enter into an alliance. The move between Abadi’s Victory Alliance and Sadr’s Saeroon will “cross sectarian and ethnic divisions,” the leaders said during a news conference on Saturday. It remains unclear whether the two parties will be working together with the Fatih coalition, which Sadr had previously committed to enter an alliance with. The Victory Alliance and Saeroon placed third and first in the May parliamentary election, respectively.

As someone reading a movie website, you’ve surely seen a coming of age romance here and there. And you’ve probably seen an alien invasion movie as well. But now they’re about to combine in a sexy, punk acid trip of a movie in the form of an adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s short story and graphic novel How to Talk to Girls at Parties.
The first trailer just arrived, and it looks like a wild, charming genre mash-up that should be a hell of a good time at the movies this summer.
Set during the glorious days of punk rock and revolution in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s, a young teen boy named Erin (Alex Sharp) is having some trouble finding his way through the raucous social environment of late night partying and chatting up girls. But that all changes when he and his friends stumble upon a strange fever dream of a party featuring a bunch of strange, sexy alien teens who are trying to blend into human society as their own extra-terrestrial rite of passage. It’s here that he meets Zan (Elle Fanning), setting him on a course for first love in the strangest way possible.
This is undoubtedly an interesting blend of genres, but I hope that the story offers up a more than Elle Fanning being this clueless alien dream girl who Alex introduces to the ways of love, humanity and punk like some kind of lost child. It has the potential to be a little (here’s that word again) problematic, even though Zan does seem to take matters into her own hands when it comes to rebelling against her alien superiors trying to stop her from getting caught up in the punk movement.
If anything, the movie at least seems to perfectly pull Neil Gaiman’s wild story into reality, complete with some David Bowie influences, including a wild-looking Nicole Kidman, who stars along with Ruth Wilson and Matt Lucas. And since this comes from director John Cameron Mitchell, who gave us Hedwig and the Angry Inch and co-wrote this adaptation with Philippa Goslet, that makes perfect sense.
How to Talk to Girls at Parties doesn’t have a specific release date in the United States yet, but it’s expected to open in the United Kingdom in May, so it will probably arrive stateside sometime this summer. In the meantime, here’s the official synopsis:
From the raucous dual imaginations of fantasy laureate Neil Gaiman (“American Gods,” Coraline) and glam-rock multi-hyphenate John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Shortbus) comes the electrifying and singular pop extravaganza film, How to Talk to Girls at Parties. Enn (Alex Sharp) is a shy suburban London teenager in 1977, sneaking out with his best friends to after-hours punk parties. One night they stumble upon a bizarre gathering of sexy teenagers who seem like they are from another planet. In fact, they are from another planet, visiting Earth to complete a mysterious rite of passage. That doesn’t stop Enn from falling madly in love with Zan (Elle Fanning), a beautiful and rebellious alien teenager who, despite her allegiance to her strange colony, is fascinated by Enn. Together they embark on a delirious adventure through the kinetic punk rock world of 1970s London, inadvertently setting off a series of events that will lead to the ultimate showdown of punks vs. aliens, and test the limits of how far each of them will go for true love.

LAS VEGAS — To get to the Orleans Arena where the men’s world curling championship is taking place, players, coaches and fans have to pass by a pool party.
Drinks are being downed by curling enthusiasts, the sun is beating down and the music is blaring; this is not your ordinary bonspiel. Not at all.
Only in Vegas would the Patch, known as the party place at curling bonspiels, be located outdoors beside the pool. The fans, many of them from Canada, are soaking it up.
But members of Team Gushue aren’t exactly basking in it all.
“This whole Vegas thing, I don’t want to say is a distraction but it’s hard to get into a routine,” skip Brad Gushue said.
“I’m not sure what we can do. It’s something we’re going to discuss this evening. I’m certainly going to bring it up amongst the team and see if there’s something we can do to get more in our bubble.”
Gushue and the team from Newfoundland and Labrador just haven’t looked comfortable in their first four games of the championship. They have a 3-1 record but could easily be 2-2 after escaping the jaws of defeat Monday afternoon against Italy.
With the score tied 7-7 in the final end, Italian skip Amos Mosaner just missed a double takeout on the last rock of the game which would have handed Canada its second loss.
“We were pretty lucky there for him to miss,” Gushue said. “I’m not quite feeling as comfortable as I’d like out there.”
This same Gushue team went undefeated one year ago at the world championship in Edmonton. They cruised through the round-robin and beat Sweden in the gold-medal game. They’ve won the past two Briers as well.
Gushue says a lot of their success has come from being able to stay focused on and off the ice.
When Gushue and company were trying to win their first Brier title two years ago at home they made a point of shutting out the external distractions and just focused on curling.
It worked. They got into a bubble, avoided fans and made sure they weren’t just showing up to a party and also curling.
They’re now going to try and apply that same sort of mentality to this world championship in Vegas.
“It doesn’t feel normal for our team right now,” Gushue said. “The guys might have a different perspective, but it’s not the same as the past two Briers when we go going really well.”
Team lead Geoff Walker agrees with the skip. He says the party is great but can sometimes get in the way.
“It’s crazy. We’re laying by the pool for our pregame. Usually Brad and I will sit in hot tub before games at other events but here we’re sitting in the pool and sun,” Walker said.
“It’s completely different. And then you have the casino. Eating in the buffet with the fans. You can’t escape it.”
Canada is sitting in a tie for third place with Scotland, Korea and China. Sweden and Norway are atop the standings in first place.
Team Gushue now gets set to play Korea Tuesday morning and then Japan in the afternoon.
“I still feel at this point if we can win out we can do our job,” Gushue said. “We’re not paying much attention to the other draws. We’re not worried about the other teams.”
The ice crew in Vegas is battling desert heat outside as temperatures soar to 30 degree Celsius. It’s been a struggle at times and Gushue says the conditions have been changing from game to game.
“The biggest thing right now is I have to get more comfortable with the ice,” he said. “I’m always second-guessing if the broom is in the right spot right now. There a lot of second-guessing.”
Mark Nichols, team third, says they’re getting valuable information with every shot.
“We’re still learning the ice. I liked the ice today it was just different from the first two days,” he said.
Learning the ice, staying away from the party. That’s the focus now for Team Gushue in Vegas.
“I certainly think playing two games a day will help, but even outside of that we have to find a better strategy to get away from the event and curling,” Gushue said.

Federer won his fifth and sixth gongs at the glitzy Monaco event last night, taking the accolades for Comeback of the Year and Sportsman of the Year, the gala event’s central prize.
The Swiss could not contain his emotion on stage, thanking presenter Martina Navratilova for her inspirational career before paying tribute to great rival Rafael Nadal with tears in his eyes.
But he could not have known that just a few hours later, Nadal would reveal that he had not recovered from an injury suffered during the Australian Open last month.
“I had done all the right steps to get well prepared for the tournament, which was my goal and my dream,” Nadal said, confirming his withdrawal from the Mexican Open.
“Unfortunately, yesterday’s final training session before debuting again noticed a puncture in the same area where I had the problem in Australia.”
Federer meanwhile, who arrived on the red carpet without wife Mirka but instead flanked by Mercedes-Benz chairman Dieter Zetsche and was also joined by coaches Severin Luthi and Ivan Ljubicic, took full advantage of the opportunity to celebrate provided by the double win.
Express Sport understands that the 36-year-old was one of the last to leave the afterparty at Jimmyz Nightclub.
Guests there were served a range of bespoke cocktails commissioned and curated by exclusive spirits sponsor Patron Tequila, including a Patron Laureus Punch, although there is no suggestion Federer was drinking alcohol.
The party, which had a guest list of around 500, petered out at 4am – when Federer was one of the last standing, along with former Swiss cyclist Fabian Cancellara.
Both men were by no means the only high-profile stars in the nightclub, with the Prince and Princess of Monaco in attendance as well as event host Benedict Cumberbatch, Sir Chris Hoy, Roger Federer, Boris Becker, Luis Figo, Brian O’Driscoll, Steve Redgrave and Victoria Pendleton.
Earlier, Federer had almost broken down crying on stage while paying tribute to rival Rafael Nadal, who is currently nursing a leg injury and was not in attendance on the night.
“Thank you to my rival Rafa,” said Federer.
“I wanted to give a shoutout to him. He had an unbelievable year himself. We had a great battle and it’s because of a guy like him, I think I’m a better player.
“He could very well be here tonight standing here with this award because he’s an incredible player, incredible friend and incredible athlete.”
He added: “This is a very special moment for me.
“Everyone knows how highly I value my Laureus Awards, so to win another would have been wonderful, but to win two is a truly unique honour.
“And so unexpected.
“I am delighted and I would like to thank the Laureus Academy for all their support.
“It was an unforgettable year for me, to come back after a very difficult difficult 2016 and these Awards just make it even more memorable.
“When I won my first Laureus Award back in 2005, if you had said I would have ended up winning six I would not have believed you.
“It’s been an amazing ride.”
