Team Blake: Cam Anthony (Grade: A) defeated Emma Caroline (Grade: B-) on “10,000 Hours” — Emma saved by Blake | In rehearsal, the competitors inspired the best of all possible compliments from their advisors, who originally performed the song with Justin Bieber. “They sing it better than we do,” exclaimed Dan + Shay. “It’s upsetting.” But Blake warned Emma that while Cam “is performing, you’re singing.” She needed to crank up the charisma. On stage, Cam sounded and looked like a freakin’ superstar; the guy was born for the spotlight. Emma, meanwhile, sounded lovely but had an unfortunate deer-in-headlights quality through much of the number. Not sure it was a smart move for Blake to save her when even he admitted that in doing so, “I wanted to scare some stage presence into you.”
Team Kelly: Gihanna Zoe (Grade: A) defeated Halley Greg (Grade: B+) on “Thinking Out Loud” | After hearing the duo rehearse, I’ll admit I was worried about Halley, who, along with Cam, was one of my absolute favorites from the Blinds. She’d nailed her big, belty note, but Gihanna sounded like she was inhabiting the notes as much as singing them; that was gonna be tough to beat. In the moment of truth, good Lorde, Gihanna just sounded like she was pulling tricks out of a bottomless bag. She was magnificent; her vocal, massive and emotional. Halley was good, too, but by and large, softer and more ethereal, which definitely gave Gihanna the edge. Still, I was gutted that no one stole Halley; no two ways about it, she’s special.
Team Legend: Zania Alake (Grade: B+) defeated Durell Anthony (Grade: C) on “Emotion” | Running through the Bee Gees/Destiny’s Child hit with their coach and advisor Brandy, Zania sounded far stronger than Durell despite his much-praised falsetto; she just needed to make sure that she had enough air to make it through her whole runs. When they took their place behind the mic, Durell sounded like he was hanging on by a thread to his pitch. Zania, on the other hand, sang with great confidence. Even though the duet as a whole never really gelled, it was like there was light being beamed out of her throat as much as sound. “You delivered once again,” summed up John.
Team Blake: Jordan Matthew Young (Grade: B+) defeated Keegan Ferrell (Grade: C) on “Calling All Angels” — Keegan stolen by Nick | After rehearsal, the big concern about Keegan was confidence. Blake loved his “wiggly vibrato,” but like Emma before him, he wasn’t owning the room; how was he gonna own the stage? Jordan didn’t lack presence, but Dan + Shay wanted him to command rather than politely request attention. In the moment of truth, Keegan sounded pretty but flat — not tonally, there just wasn’t any there there, nothing unique or particularly memorable (though Kelly’s fill-in Kelsea Ballerini was really wowed by his high note). Jordan, with his grittier voice, dominated with ease. If you’d told me I was watching a guest performer in the finale, I would’ve believed you. He was a total fish in water. Or a fish in bell bottoms, at least. Couldn’t believe Nick stole Keegan instead of Halley!
Team Nick: Zae Romeo (Grade: A) defeated Lindsay Joan (Grade: A-) on “Rewrite the Stars” | In rehearsal, advisor Darren Criss worried that, despite the contestants’ good instincts, their performance wasn’t meshing as a duet. (See also: Zania and Durell.) Suffering from his-and-hers fears, Zae and Lindsay just weren’t connecting. On stage, though, they pulled it together. Zae in particular really nailed the emotion of the song, whereas Lindsay shone more brightly in the technical aspects. Tough call, but I’d have had to have gone with Zae. The guy is the total package, and whereas Lindsay sometimes gave the sense that she was acting, from him, I only had a sense of feeling. Plus, how good would his name look in lights?
Team Kelly: Corey Ward (Grade: B-) defeated Savanna Woods (Grade: B+) on “Dreams” — Savanna saved by Kelsea for Kelly | Practicing with Kelly and Luis Fonsi, Savanna started Corey shaking in his boots. “She knows how to use her instrument to a T,” marveled Luis, adding that the competitors actually made one another better during their performance. Mebbe, but to me, he sounded outclassed; Savanna’s a beast in the best way. When the spotlight fell on the duo, Corey acquitted himself nicely, sculpting notes out of thin air. This wasn’t anywhere near as exciting a Savanna performance as her Blind, but I still couldn’t take my ears off her. We’ve heard a lot of Coreys, far fewer Savannas; she should stand way the hell out in the Four-Way Knockout.
Finally, given extremely short shrift was the Battle between Team Legend’s Ciana Pelekai and Denisha Dalton in which the former emerged victorious. Eesh — guess the “vocal risks” their coach mentioned them taking didn’t exactly pay off.
So, who stood out for you Monday night? Vote for the best Battle-r in the poll below, then hit the comments, if only to tell me that yes, I was the only one so bummed about Halley being eliminated.

Aussie flu symptoms include headaches, sore throats and vomiting.
The best way to protect yourself against flu, including the deadly Aussie flu virus, is to get the flu jab, Public Health England (PHE) has urged.
But, this year’s winter flu vaccine is only working 30 to 40 per cent of the time, according to the director of the Worldwide Influenza Centre.
The flu jab isn’t particularly effective at preventing infection from the Aussie flu virus, added Dr John McCauley. The Australian flu virus is a mutated influenza A H3N2 virus.
“The vaccine for this particular influenza, H3N2, is not particularly effective,” McCauley told Sky News.
“It is basically considered of moderate effectiveness, which means 30-40 per cent of cases will be avoided among people who have the vaccine.
“What the prospect for this winter is I think too early to say. We know it is not going to be a mild winter, but whether it is moderate or severe we wait and see.
“The numbers are increasing, and if they continue increasing it’s going to be quite an influenza season.”
The warning came after England’s Chief Medical Officer, Dame Sally Davies, urged NHS staff to get the flu has as soon as possible, to help reduce the spread of flu.
Under 60 per cent of NHS staff have been vaccinated this year, according to PHE records. But, in some NHS trusts, less than 30 per cent of staff have had the flu jab.
“Flu can kill, and it is important we all take it seriously,” said Davies.
“The best way to protect yourself and those around you is to get the flu jab. If you are suffering from flu-like symptoms, you should catch your coughs or sneezes in tissues, bin the tissue immediately, and wash your hands regularly with soap and warm water.”
Aussie flu has been reported in every postcode of the UK.
Symptoms of the virus are similar to those of normal flu, but are much more severe, and tend to last longer.
Lower your risk of infection by regularly washing your hands, avoiding crowded public places, and by maintaining good hygiene, according to St John Ambulance.
People worried that they may be infected should avoid GP surgeries, as they risk spreading the virus further. But, it’s best to get checked out by a doctor if you have a long-term medical condition, are pregnant, or are over the age of 65.
Leechburg, Pennsylvania Police Chief Michael Diebold, who gained national attention after losing part of his arm in a fireworks accident last summer, has been arrested and charged with various sex crimes.
Diebold, 40, was arrested on Friday at a designated meeting location in Westmoreland County by agents belonging to the state attorney general’s Child Predator Section and booked on charges of unlawful contact with a minor and criminal attempt to commit involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, after he attempted to meet with a 14-year-old girl, the state attorney general’s office said Friday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
The state attorney general’s office stated that Diebold sent inappropriate photos and solicited sexual contact from an undercover agent posing as the 14-year-old girl.
The police chief’s arrest was still being processed into the late hours of Friday afternoon, and a criminal complaint is not yet available, according to the Post-Gazette.
“This case is particularly heinous because the perpetrator is a public official, sworn to serve and protect the community,” Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said in a statement, the Post-Gazette reported. “We have a zero tolerance policy for the sexual abuse of children and my office will prosecute any offender to the fullest extent of the law, no matter who they are.”
Following Diebold’s accident this summer that left him without part of his left arm, he was scheduled to return to his department in December. However, he did not return, and was placed on paid leave on December 11.
Leechburg Mayor Wayne Dobos said in a phone interview with the Post-Gazette on Friday evening that the borough did not know about the criminal investigation when it made the decision to put Diebold on paid leave.
“This was all over his accident, and the lawyers are trying to work out whatever with that,” he said.
The mayor said he only learned of the charges on Friday.
“This is all a surprise to me,” Dobbs stated. “I’m just as shocked as everyone else.”
Dobos said he could not comment on what the borough of Leechburg will do going forward with Diebold under investigation. He did say, however, that he must talk with the borough’s council and attorneys before making any decisions related to the situation.

“Right now I have no comment outside of I’m shocked,” he said.
Diebold lost his left hand and part of his forearm on June 24 when a mortar misfired as he was lighting fireworks for the Leechburg Volunteer Fire Company’s yearly carnival. He was treated for the injuries he suffered at UPMC Mercy hospital in Pittsburgh.

Smartwatches are taking over our wrists, and it’s likely to get worse for traditional Swiss watchmakers, according to UBS.
The Apple Watch is bigger than every Swiss watch brand except Rolex, analysts at the bank said in a note on Monday. And Swatch is most vulnerable in this environment, according to Helen Brand and her colleagues.
Swiss watchmakers recognize the demand for wearables, but are reluctant to dive in because they would need to rely on the tech companies that make the microprocessors that replace the mechanical parts, UBS said.
Also, the high-end companies could hurt their status when they sell wearables cheaper than they would traditional timepieces. That puts Swatch at the most risk because it leans more heavily towards entry-level products than its peers, Brand said.
“Market share may be further eroded for the Swiss industry as smartwatches improve in functionality,” Brand said. “The wider wearables market is now likely 30-40 million in volumes in total with Swiss watches industry volumes at 28m.”
Swatch’s biggest threat is from China.
“This has been a region where we have seen strong momentum, notably for Tissot and Longines driven by the emerging Chinese middle class,” Brand said. “If this consumer prefers the Apple Watch over these brands it could be a threat to Swatch’s medium-term growth prospect.”
Bloomberg reported that Swatch was working on a smartwatch to launch around the end of 2018.
US watchmaker Fossil has already entered the smartwatch market, but its foray has not prevented a sales decline. Kosta Kartsotis, Fossil’s CEO, cited “a watch category undergoing significant change” when the company reported weaker-than-expected earnings in the first quarter.
This chart shows that traditional watchmakers’ sales peaked right as the first-generation Apple Watch launched in Q2 2015.

More wearables are shipping than Swiss watches.

A redeeming factor for Swiss watchmakers is that their products are essentially jewelry, meaning they are timeless and can hold emotional value when gifted. A smartwatch, however, would become obsolete after a few years if the battery goes flat or its maker stops providing operating-system updates.
Also, there remains the perception that the Apple Watch is a smartphone on your wrist, which it arguably isn’t. UBS’ survey of nearly 8,000 smartphone users in May found that the biggest reason why people didn’t want an Apple Watch was that they thought it wasn’t needed.

NBC this Monday served up Taken, it’s prequel, set in 2017, to the film franchise that started up in 2008. Will you stick around to follow the evolution of Bryan Mills’ certain grouping of abilities?
Whereas Mills when we met him in the first Taken film was a retired CIA operative, here (with Vikings‘ Clive Standen succeeding/preceding? Liam Neeson) he only has his Green Beret past behind him, having served three tours in Afghanistan. He is making a trip home, via train, with his younger sister Cali, when he senses something isn’t quite kosher. Bryan gruffly whispers directions for Cali to follow, to keep her safe as he sizes things up, but once all the fighting and shooting is done, all of the passengers are alive and well… except her.
Bryan’s bittersweet heroics catch the attention of a super-secret somethingoranother group led by Jennifer Beals, who speculate that he had been targeted by cartel boss Carlos Meija, seeking revenge for Bryan’s killing of his son (who had a DEA agent at gunpoint during an undercover op). Bryan meanwhile about laying his sister to rest back home — looking over his shoulder at all times, especially when black paneled vans lurk down the street. After a skirmish with one such van, Bryan brushes off his father’s plea to sit still and instead holes up at his own, remote house, where he quite ably fends off three would-be assassins and kills a fourth. “Dudes got some skills,” says one of Beals’ charges, surveying Mills’ handiwork.
Mills reaches out to the DEA agent whose life he saved years ago, warning that he will be targeted as well. But after hanging up, Bryan sees a text message arrive on the phone of the assassin he killed — from his DEA agent pal. Bryan leads his friend to believe he got taken out, then gets the jump on him in a parking garage. After eluding another killer during a parking garage car chase, Mills and the DEA dude retreat to some metro tunnels, where the latter explains that his own family was being threatened. “Don’t ever have kids — especially not a daughter,” he advises Mills, wink-wink.
After sparing the snitch’s life, Mills allows himself to be captured by Meija‘s men, who then string him up in a remote barn. There, Meija himself arrives to confront his son’s killer — and exact more revenge, while Mills realizes that the cartel boss was the actual triggerman on the train. That is when Beals’ team swoops in on the scene, teeing up a massive shootout. Mills gets free and trains a gun on his sister’s killer, but gets shot by Beals’ men before he can kill Meija.
When Mills wakes up in a Buffalo hospital, Beals introduces herself as Christina Hart, the deputy director of a special portfolio (“emergency covert action team”) of the Office of National Intelligence, where she answers to the president. She says that she sees in Mills a man who is “wired to protect others,” and explains that in keeping Meija alive, they can do much good working off of the valuable intel he can provide. Will Bryan be a part of Hart’s team? Or will he let Cali’s death be for nothing?

]]>Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky on Tuesday suggested he’s not sold on the need for investigations into the mounting controversies roiling President Donald Trump’s administration.
Paul said in a radio interview on the “Kilmeade and Friends” radio program Tuesday that he didn’t think it was prudent to launch “investigation after investigation” on fellow members of the Republican Party.
“I don’t think it’s useful to be doing investigation after investigation, particularly of your own party,” he said.
He continued: “We’ll never even get started with doing the things we need to do like repealing Obamacare if we’re spending our whole time having Republicans. I think it makes no sense.”
Several Republicans in Congress have called for a full inquiry into Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser to Trump. Statements Flynn made about conversations he had with a Russian ambassador before Trump’s inauguration ultimately led to his resignation on Monday.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Tuesday it is “highly likely” the Senate Intelligence Committee would dig deeper into Flynn. Other Republicans have echoed those sentiments, including Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. He asked on Tuesday, “Did Gen. Flynn do this by himself, or was he directed by somebody to do it?”
Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, who chairs the Foreign Relations Committee, said a full investigation “wouldn’t be out of the question.”
Democratic lawmakers overwhelmingly lambasted Flynn following his resignation and demanded answers about who else may be implicated in possible illicit communications with the Kremlin.
