Canadian Olympic snowboarder Max Parrot announced on Thursday he has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Parrot, a 24-year-old from Bromont, Que., captured slopestyle silver at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. He was diagnosed with the cancer on Dec. 21, 10 days after undergoing a biopsy. The five-time X Games champion also announced he will miss the entire season — including February's world championships, the World Cup circuit and the X Games — and has chosen to focus on his health. Parrot's most recent result was an eighth-place big air finish in Beijing in November. WATCH | Max Parrot reveals he has cancer: "The first symptoms appeared when I started scratching my skin repeatedly in the fall. It started all the way back in September," he said. "And then, in November, I realized I had a bump on my neck. I had a swollen gland. I saw my family doctor and he sent me for a biopsy. I received the diagnosis a few days before Christmas, confirming that I had Hodgkin's lymphoma. "It was tough to hear the news, and it's still hard now. But at first, the most difficult for me was to realize that I would have to put an end to my season. When I missed the Dew Tour in mid-December, it was because I had to undergo the biopsy and it was a challenging time because I had never missed a single competition in seven years. And it won't be easy to stay at home these upcoming months because I'm used to travelling at this time of year. But I have a new type of challenge to take on. This is a new kind of competition I must face, and I intend to do everything I can to win." Parrot underwent an operation a few weeks ago and had his first round of chemotherapy last week to treat the disease, which affects the white blood cells in the lymphatic system. "I know it will get tougher and tougher as it goes on. I have 11 sessions left, at a rate of every two weeks, and if all goes well I should be done in June," said Parrot. "It will be a long process. The word 'cancer' is scary, as is the treatment that comes with it. But I have great people around me. I have a lot of real positive energy with my family and my friends. My sponsors are also supporting me in this. I have an awesome medical team and I have all the confidence in the world in the work they are doing. My sport psychologist and my coach also help me make sure that my morale is good, so that I can fight this as best I can." WATCH | The full news conference: Hodgkin's lymphoma is a relatively rare cancer, according to Lymphoma Canada. It accounts for around 0.5 per cent of all cancers and 15 per cent of all lymphomas diagnosed. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, there are several forms of the disease. It starts in the white blood cells of the lymphatic system, which works with the immune system to fight infection and disease. It's a relatively rare form of cancer, with 990 Canadians diagnosed in 2017. Joelle Duschene, oncologist at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke, is optimistic Parrot can make a full recovery. "Max has a stage IIA [or early stage] classical Hodgkin's lymphoma," said Duschene. "The treatment plan is chemotherapy for six months, and the prognosis is very good." Parrot said his best friend was diagnosed with the same cancer a few years ago, and has drawn from his experience. Parrot also used hockey Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux as one athlete who has battled back from Hodgkin's lymphoma. It is a cancer of part of a person's immune system and is most often seen in people aged 20 to 40. Lemieux fought the disease in 1993 during one of his best scoring seasons. In fact, he travelled to Philadelphia on the same day as his last chemo treatment and scored a goal and an assist. Parrot was thrust into the spotlight last February when he and Mark McMorris captured Canada's first medals of the 2018 Winter Games — silver and bronze, respectively. While McMorris drew more attention for his comeback from severe injuries sustained in a now-infamous backcountry snowboarding incident, it was Parrot who bested him on the podium. Parrot has a reputation as a meticulous innovator, embracing trampoline training as a way to hone his skills year round and taking big air to new heights by landing the first-ever quad underflip to secure X Games gold in 2017.

Lots of macaw parrot skeletons and feathers have turned up at human settlements in the southwestern US and northwestern Mexico dating back to at least 900 CE. Given that these sites are at least 1,000 kilometers north of the bird’s natural range, it has long been clear that there was an interesting story here. How were macaws traded between cultures and over such long distances, long before the arrival of the Spanish and their horses?
Between 1250 and 1450, a settlement discovered at Paquimé in Mexico seems to have hosted a macaw-breeding program that must have met the demand for this culturally significant bird in the region. But what about before Paquimé? Archaeologists have debated the possibilities: that traders frequently traveled the long route to bring back macaws, that birds were haphazardly traded between settlements, or that there was an earlier breeding post.
A study led by Penn State’s Richard George sought to answer this question using DNA from scarlet macaw skeletons found at New Mexico’s Chaco Canyon and Mimbres settlements. Techniques to recover fairly complete DNA sequences from archaeological specimens have advanced in recent years, allowing researchers to test hypotheses with much more confidence.

Max Parrot finished his World Cup season in style with a win in his home province.
The native of Bromont, Que., took home gold in the snowboarding big air event in Quebec City on Saturday.
The 23-year-old topped the podium with a score of 195.25, while Swiss rider Jonas Boesiger came in second (182.25) and fellow Canadian Antoine Truchon captured bronze (168.00). Parrot landed a frontside triple cork 1440 and a backside triple cork 1620 en route to the first-place finish.
“That’s always the best feeling,” he said, reflecting on the win in Quebec.
“The goal here was to put on a show for them. It’s super great to finish well at the last FIS World Cup of the season and it’s been a really good season so far,” Parrot said in a press release.
Parrot is coming off a silver medal in slopestyle at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea last month.
On the women’s side, Laurie Blouin, of Stoneham, Que., captured silver in the big air event with a score of 148.
American Julia Marino won gold (168.50), while Canadian teen Marguerite Sweeney finished just off the podium in fifth (120.25).
Blouin also won silver in slopestyle at the Pyeongchang Games.

Drone videos can be spectacular, but editing them? Not so much — don’t be surprised if you spend hours cutting 10 minutes of footage into something worth watching. Parrot thinks there’s a better way. It’s adding a Flight Director feature to its FreeFlight Pro mobile app (for Android and iOS) that automatically edits your drone footage. Algorithms study the drone’s behavior and produce videos up to 3 minutes in length based on a handful of criteria, including the style (chronological, cinematic or trailer), pre-made themes and other existing footage. The biggest dilemma may be choosing your soundtrack.
Be prepared to pay up to get the full experience. You can create 15-second “best of” clips for free, but you’ll need to spring for the premium version of the feature in-app if you want to unlock its full potential. And of course, you’ll need a Parrot drone (a Bebop 1, 2 or Power) for this to work — you can get similar apps from the likes of GoPro, but it won’t be the exact same experience. If you have the hardware and regularly record aerial videos, though, this could let you spend more time flying and less time trimming clips.

Max Parrot mimicked his winning performance from last year to grab gold in snowboard big air at the 2018 Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo.
For the second year in a row, the Cowansville, Que., native edged Norway’s Marcus Kleveland to finish atop the podium. For the third year in a row, he won gold.
Parrot ended with 75 points, two ahead of his Norwegian rival.
Japan’s Yuki Kadono won bronze with a score of 68.
Canada’s Mark McMorris, a favourite entering the final, never quite got on track. As a result the Regina, Sask., native ended in fourth, with 61 points.
Tyler Nicholson, from North Bay, Ont., scored 52 points to finish in sixth.
Parrot, McMorris and Nicholson will all compete for Canada in big air at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea next month.
After CBS aired its interview with Editor-in-Chief Simonyan in early January, social media users took opposing sides over whether they like RT or not, but many agreed that CBS was pushing a mainstream media agenda claiming “Russian meddling.” RT asked several analysts to make their points about the interview, which was produced in the form of a televised report selectively featuring Simonyan’s answers.
Political commentator John Bosnitch said RT has given a voice to “the critics of the US system,” and those critics come from the US itself, including people opposing the US establishment, its foreign interventions and “the deep state” since at least the 1950s.
The US is not used to hearing more than one official narrative, the analyst argued, adding “the White House, the Congress and the arms of the government, and the deep state, the police and intelligence services, define the [media] narrative.”
According to Bosnitch, top political brass and business captains hold private meetings with the media outlet owners or editors, “telling them, ‘here’s the line’.”
If journalists working for the US media – who Bosnitch called “a cheering team for the US military industrial complex” – want to stay on air, they have to “parrot the line.” After that point, it does not matter what the journalists themselves make of the news they are covering, or what they have researched on their own, he said.
Adam Garrie, Managing Editor at Duran.com, offered a more emotive comment on CBS, saying the “disgraced mainstream media” were trying “to put the burden of proof on RT to defend itself, where RT has done everything to the books.”
He said RT was doing what any other media outlet should do, namely covering news and providing differing opinions – a basic right embraced by America’s First Amendment which is “hiding under the layer of dust” in the same way the UN Charter “has been buried under the river of blood shed by the US and their allies.”
If Simonyan told her life story at a Golden Globe awards ceremony, “people would’ve applauded it,” Garrie said. “But because it is Russia and because it is RT, she is vilified.”
While repeatedly bashing RT and other Russian media outlets over their alleged involvement in an “information war,” the US studiously avoids mentioning its own engagement in information warfare, said author and journalist Max Blumenthal, who is the Senior Editor of AlterNet’s Grayzone Project.
Representative Jackie Speier from California has called for RT to be banned, Blumenthal pointed out, adding: “What we’ve seen is an attack on press freedom in the US. And ‘60 Minutes’ was part and parcel of that attack by siding with really what should be a discredited intelligence report … and roundup producing high-school level content analysis of RT from two years ago, focusing on shows that aren’t even on the network anymore.”
Stahl repeatedly asked Simonyan about Russia and RT allegedly “supporting” Donald Trump during his election campaign and about other instances of suspected interference in US internal affairs though her references to the “US intelligence reports” were reduced to the controversial report by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) dating back to January 2017. Riddled with factual inaccuracies and not providing any hard evidence, the ODNI report featured a quite hollow seven-page annex devoted to RT.
Commenting on the ‘Russian meddling’ allegations, Martin McCauley, a British historian and Russia researcher at the University College of London (UCL), said the Americans “do love conspiracy theories,” particularly in cases when “something is going wrong in America.”
So, the media are feeding on them, he told RT, because “that attracts viewers, and if you attract viewers, you get more revenue from advertising.”

Canadian snowboarder Max Parrot waited at the bottom of the Dew Tour slopestyle course on Saturday as seven other riders took their turns down the track.
One by one, they failed to best his 97 points, and Parrot could finally celebrate a long-awaited accomplishment.
The 23-year-old from Bromont, Que., won the men’s slopestyle event in Breckenride, Colo., for the first time in seven Dew Tour starts since 2011.
“I’ve had two podiums before today — a third place and a second place — but I finally won it,” Parrot said in a phone interview with The Canadian Press. “It means a lot to me and I’m very happy.
“To be honest I didn’t think [97 points] was enough. I had good chances with that score but I knew four or five people could bump me. So it was definitely stressful. I stood up there and I watched them and it stood up until the end so I’m very happy.”

Canada’s Spencer O’Brien won the women’s snowboard slopestyle event earlier in the day.
O’Brien, from Courtenay, B.C., layed down a 95-point second run that lifted her into first place in the eight-woman final. American Jamie Anderson was second with 93.33 points and Finland’s Enni Rukajarvi was third with 92.
The best score of three runs counts as a rider’s final score.
The 29-year-old O’Brien, who finished 12th when slopestyle made its Olympic debut at the 2014 Sochi Games, started her day with a 35-point first run. O’Brien wrapped up with a 30.66-point third run but had to wait for Anderson’s final run — a 31 — before locking up first place.

Parrot started his day with 48.33 points before rebounding with the 97 in his second. Parrot said he had plans to wow judges even more in the third run with two triple-corks — something no other competitor did — but he had difficulty landing the first.
“I was pretty close,” Parrot said with a laugh. “That would have been maybe 100 (points), I don’t know.”
Chris Corning of the United States took silver with 95 points and Norway’s Mons Roisland was third.
Two-time Dew Tour champion Mark McMorris of Regina scored 82.33 points for an eighth-place finish in the 12-man final.
McMorris, a multiple X Games champion and defending Olympic bronze medallist in slopestlye, suffered a fractured jaw, fractured left arm, ruptured spleen, stable pelvic fracture, rib fractures and a collapsed left lung in an off-trail crash near Whistler, B.C., last March.
“He had such horrific injuries, it’s crazy how fast he gets back,” Parrot said of McMorris. “He already has two wins this season so he has a good start. I think he’s on fire but today wasn’t his day.”
Other Canadians Darcy Sharpe and Tyler Nicholson were sixth and 10th, respectively. On the women’s side, Laurie Blouin took falls in all three of her runs to finish eighth with a top score of 28.
Parrot finished fifth in slopestyle at the Sochi Olympics. He said his goal for the 2018 Pyeongchang Games isn’t necessarily to win gold.
“My focus will be on landing my runs, that’s all I want,” Parrot said. “I’m going to for sure have a run in mind that will put me on the podium and if I land it, I’ll be on top.”
Evan McEachran of Oakville, Ont., finished just off the podium in fourth place in the men’s ski slopestyle event while Olympic champion Dara Howell of Hunstville, Ont., was sixth in the women’s ski slopestyle.

Mark McMorris and Max Parrot aren’t exactly rivals, but they’re not best friends either.
The Canadians are two of of the world’s best snowboarders, and both are medal favourites heading into the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
But that’s just about where the similarities between the two end, according to McMorris.
“He takes more of the gymnast approach and doesn’t ride big mountain stuff or doesn’t really spend his time going to film for projects or go heli-boarding and do stuff like that,” McMorris says about the 23-year-old from Bromont, Que. “He’s more on the trampoline or on an airbag and then hitting the jumps and stuff.”
“So not my cup of tea and not the snowboarder I really love to watch, but he’s damn good at doing flips and landing at the right times.”
Parrot doesn’t shy away from this approach to snowboarding, saying it gives him an opportunity to hone his skills year-round.
“We all have different ways of preparing ourselves and training ourselves,” Parrot says. “When you go out on the mountain, you take the chairlift, you do maybe, in a day, I would say 15 jumps. But on a trampoline you can do 15 jumps in less than a minute.”
Good Times with Craig McMorris2:56
“McMorris has been a gymnast as well. He has done trampoline since he was very young,” Parrot says about his 23-year-old counterpart from Regina. “Maybe he stopped now because, you know, in snowboarding [if] you’re doing trampolining it’s not known as something cool, so I think he just stopped that for his image or maybe he does it secretly, I don’t know.
“Maybe he doesn’t even need it. Like I said, there’s many other ways to be good at snowboarding, but I personally think [the trampoline is] a very, very great place to learn new tricks. Especially in a safe way.”
Safety has been a major part of the discussion surrounding McMorris this year after he sustained near-fatal injuries while backcountry snowboarding in British Columbia in March.
“I’ve had to talk about the injury probably every time I’ve talked to anybody that has any recollection of what I’ve done, because that seems to be the talking point over the last six months for me,” McMorris says. “I feel like I’m past it and have overcome it and just want to move on to new things and get competing so I can talk to people about that.
“I feel like I’m mentally past it and very close to being physically past it.”
He certainly looked like his usual self in his return to the World Cup circuit on Nov. 25 in Beijing, winning the big air event with three impressive jumps. Big air will make its Olympic debut in February, and both McMorris and Parrot — who wasn’t in Beijing — have already qualified for the Games.
Mark McMorris puts world on notice with Big Air gold in Beijing1:51
Both snowboarders competed in slopestyle at the Sochi 2104 Olympics, with McMorris winning bronze and Parrot placing fifth. Since those Games, the duo have been mainstays on X Games and World Cup podiums in both events, with Parrot taking things to new heights by landing the first-ever quad underflip to secure X Games gold in Aspen in January.
“A quad is a very good trick. When you do it you have a lot of chances to win, that’s for sure. But the problem is we don’t have a big jump to do quads at every contest,” Parrot says, adding that the jump in Aspen is the only one big enough for it at the moment.
“I don’t even think at the Olympics we’ll have a jump big enough to do quads, so I would say I’m putting my energy right now more into other tricks that are possible on every jump.”
Max Parrot wins gold at X Games0:41
That suits McMorris just fine, who told CBC Sports’s Jacqueline Doorey after Parrot’s gold-winning quad that the trick “scared the living beep” out of him.
“I don’t think I’ll ever try that trick in any other circumstance than in a competition when I need to. It’s just one of those tricks that isn’t necessarily like the best time. It’s just really scary,” McMorris said after earning bronze at that event.
There’s a unique dynamic within Olympic snowboarding, where your biggest competitor may be marching right beside you in the parade of nations. Differences aside, there is a mutual respect between McMorris and Parrot.
“Max as a competitor is really, really great. He does consistently well pretty much all the time,” McMorris says.
“He’s a very, very talented snowboarder,” Parrot says of McMorris. “He has won many, many medals over the past years.
“I wouldn’t say I’m best friends with him, but, we’re friends and there’s not any rivalry I would say.”
However, underneath that level of mutual recognition there are personal and philosophical differences between the two that clearly separate them. McMorris attributes it to “a different vibe between the two of us.”
“I didn’t get into snowboarding trying to go to the Olympics or trying to be the best competitive snowboarder. I just got into snowboarding because I loved riding with my friends and being a snowboarder,” McMorris says, adding that “being respected in the community” is as important as winning international competitions.
“I don’t really have these conversations with [Parrot], but if you watch anything that he’s been a part of it’s like ‘I wanted to be a pro snowboarder and I wanted to win medals’ and that’s his take. I love winning and that makes me feel great, but I don’t necessarily sacrifice my snowboarding image just for medals.”
Parrot, who says he doesn’t backcountry snowboard but may try it after his competitive career ends, is comfortable with his approach and confident about why he does it.
“Snowboarding has evolved so much since I’d say five, six years [ago] that now it’s kind of getting hard to do backcountry, filming, so much other stuff and be still concentrated on winning the contests,” he says. “So I just focus my energy all on contests and I think it’s working pretty well.
“What I love about snowboarding is that you can always push the limits.”
