The tweet came during Thursday night’s coverage of the William Hill World Darts Championship at the Alexandra Palace in London, a tournament which Ladbrokes used to sponsor.

Their tweet, with a screenshot of the presenter, read: “Dave Clark looks like he’s caught the whiff of something nasty & wants to murder the person who’s caused it…”

Clark responded: “That’ll be the chronic degenerative neurological condition that will eventually rob me of the ability to walk, talk and smile.”

Ladbrokes later replied: “@DaveClarkTV we would like to apologise sincerely for what was a completely ill-judged, and inappropriate tweet. We will today be making a donation to @ParkinsonsUK in support of his excellent charity. Keep up the great work”

Match of the Day pundit and former England star Alan Shearer tweeted: “Wow! Two people tweeting. One is a gentleman, who inspires us all. After his match on Thursday night, Peter Wright, the World No 2 player, donated his shirt to Clark and was pictured with him.

Clark had taken a screen shot of the Ladbrokes tweet about him and posted it with his reply.

Clark, whose father also suffered with Parkinson’s, was diagnosed with the disease in 2011.

Raising awareness for the disease, in 2016 Clark did a 200 mile coast-to-coast walk across England to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK.

Steve Ford CEO of Parkinson’s UK said: “We’re staggered at the lack of understanding of Parkinson’s that has been displayed here.
 
“Parkinson’s can cause a stiff, ‘mask-like’ facial expression that can make it difficult to talk-and smile.
 
“This message does nothing to help people feel more able to talk about their own Parkinson’s. Sadly, we know that many feel that they need to hide their symptoms or lie about the condition, in some cases for fear that they will be stigmatised.
 
“Parkinson’s UK is proud to have Dave Clark as an ambassador. He has played a huge role in raising awareness of Parkinson’s and supporting others. He has also personally raised tens of thousands of pounds, to support Parkinson’s research.
 
“We’re pleased to see that Ladbrokes has since apologised for their tweet, and the donation they will be making to Parkinson’s UK will support our work to find better treatments and a cure.”

We spoke to five people who were diagnosed with young onset Parkinson’s between the ages of 8 and 42.

Parkinson’s disease affects 1 in 500 people in the UK. Most are over 50 – but, according to the NHS, 1 in 20 people with the condition first notice symptoms when they’re under 40. Some people get diagnosed even earlier than that.

Shamsa Hussein, now 32, was diagnosed at 28; Emma Lawton, 34, was diagnosed at 29; Heidi Reynolds, 41, was diagnosed at 37; Nick Hazell, 44, was diagnosed at 42; and Matt Eagles has been in treatment for Parkinson’s symptoms since age 8 and is now 48.

Researchers have discovered that patients suffering from two particular types of dementia have higher levels of zinc and iron in their brains.

The study by Michigan State University showed that people with Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease had more of the two minerals their brains than healthy patients.

Zinc is a trace element – meaning it is only present in the body in very small amounts – essential for regulating the immune system.

Similarly, iron is an essential mineral, found in foods like spinach, that enables enough oxygen to be distributed around the body.

The researchers also found that people with pancreatic cancer had unusually high amounts of a specific zinc transporter.

This controls how zinc is accumulated and used by cells in the body.

Researchers believe that controlling levels of these minerals in all three conditions could help treat them. 

Zinc is the second most common trace element after iron.

Researchers believe that by looking at how the body maintains proper levels of zinc and iron, and seeing what happens when this goes wrong, can help them understand the importance of a particular family of transporters.

They looked at a ZIP zinc transporter from the ZIP family, which is made up of thousands of metal transporters.

The human genome – which is the genetic information in an organism – encodes 14 ZIPs.

Many of them are associated with particular diseases.

For example, Acrodermatitis Enteropathica is a rare and lethal disorder caused by zinc deficiency.

Scientists believe the discovery provides a new target for testing drugs.

“In the long run, we hope our study will contribute to the discovery of the ZIP inhibitors for pancreatic cancer and other devastating diseases,” said Jian Hu, a study author and biochemist at Michigan State University.

There is no suggestion that people should alter their eating habits to consume less zinc and iron.

The condition – which affects around 127,000 people in the UK, can also cause hidden symptoms such as poor sleep, bladder or bowel problems, dementia and depression.

A charity has warned research into new treatments for Parkinson’s disease is falling behind and in urgent need of extra funding.

Parkinson’s UK said that without greater progress, patients with the progressive shaking disease face a ‘bleak future’.

The main drug prescribed to people with Parkinson’s, levodopa, has not changed in more than 50 years.

The charity has launched its first public fundraising campaign as it marks 200 years since the disease was first identified by physician James Parkinson.

Although some of the symptoms of Parkinson’s are treatable, currently there is nothing available that can halt or reverse the condition.

“In the past 200 years we have made many strides forward, but people with Parkinson’s are still waiting for a treatment that can tackle the condition head on,” said Steve Ford, chief executive of Parkinson’s UK.

“Parkinson’s can leave people struggling to walk, talk and sleep. Today, we say we won’t wait any longer.

“That’s why Parkinson’s UK is spearheading, with the expertise of the research community and the support of those living with Parkinson’s, the step change needed to deliver better treatments and a cure faster.

“But we can’t do this alone. That’s why we’re urgently asking people to donate, in our first ever public fundraising campaign, whatever they can to support our vital work.

“We won’t tolerate Parkinson’s treatments falling behind.”

Alison Ottaway, 50, a mother of one, from Guildford, Surrey, was diagnosed in 2006 the day before her fortieth birthday.

She said: “I take 15 tablets a day. Sometimes they work like clockwork, but I have had times when the medication stops working halfway between doses.

“That’s the thing with Parkinson’s, it varies day to day and people don’t understand that.

“I experience stiffness, sometimes I can walk fine but other times I’ll be crawling along the floor.

“Even simple things like holding a shopping bag can be impossible when the tablets are not working as effectively.

“When I’m having a good day people don’t realise that the medication is masking a terrible condition and unfortunately, it can come for anyone.

“If there was the chance to reverse the progression of Parkinson’s it would give me a second chance to live my life how I wanted to.”

Parkinson’s UK’s ‘We Won’t Wait’ fundraising campaign will raise essential funds that will drive forward crucial developments in Parkinson’s research.

The study found that people with hepatitis B were 76 per cent more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease, and people with hepatitis C were 51 per cent more likely to develop the crippling condition.

Hepatitis B is spread through contact with blood and body fluids of an infected person, such as unprotected sex, sharing needles, getting a tattoo or piercing with unsterilised tools or sharing razors or toothbrushes with an infected person.

Hepatitis C is spread through blood-to-blood contact such as sharing needles, razors and toothbrushes and is passed on at birth by infected mothers.

While both can lead to serious illness, many people have few symptoms and do not realise they have the virus, especially at first.

Oxford University researchers examined hospital records from a large British database.

They looked for records of people with a first case of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, autoimmune hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis and HIV from 1999 to 2011.

Those people were compared to the hospital records of people with relatively minor conditions such as cataract surgery, bunions and knee replacement surgery.

For all of the participants, researchers looked at the records to see who later developed Parkinson’s disease.

There were nearly 22,000 people with hepatitis B, 48,000 with hepatitis C, 6,000 with autoimmune hepatitis, 4,000 with chronic active hepatitis and nearly 20,000 with HIV.

They were compared to more than six million people with minor conditions.

The study, published online by the journal Neurology, found that a total of 44 people with hepatitis B developed Parkinson’s disease, compared to 25 cases that would be expected in the general population.

For people with hepatitis C, 73 people developed Parkinson’s disease, where about 49 cases would have been expected in the general population.

Study author Julia Pakpoor, of Oxford University, said: “The development of Parkinson’s disease is complex, with both genetic and environmental factors.

“It’s possible that the hepatitis virus itself or perhaps the treatment for the infection could play a role in triggering Parkinson’s disease or it’s possible that people who are susceptible to hepatitis infections are also more susceptible to Parkinson’s disease.

“We hope that identifying this relationship may help us to better understand how Parkinson’s disease develops.”

She said people with autoimmune hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis and HIV didn’t have an increased rate of Parkinson’s disease.

A previous study from Taiwan showed a relationship between hepatitis C and Parkinson’s disease, but it did not show any relationship for hepatitis B.

Ms Pakpoor said that limitations of the current study included that they could not adjust for lifestyle factors such as smoking and alcohol use, which could affect Parkinson’s disease risk.
