Thousands of Parisians descended on the capital’s streets on Monday to salute their football squad, as the victorious Les Bleus returned from Russia, bringing the FIFA World Cup trophy to home soil.

The sense of unity and general excitement reached its apogee in France on Monday, as the country’s national football team, fresh from claiming World Cup victory over Croatia on Sunday, paraded through the Champs-Élysées to the joy of cheering crowds.

Jubilant fans have not been timid in expressing their emotions over the historic moment.

“It’s just an incredible feeling. All the energy, everything, seeing them coming here – it was incredible. It was a bit short…but the sense of unity – it was absolutely incredible,” a fan told RT.

The celebrations that have engulfed the French capital left nobody indifferent, with foreigners being swept up in a football fever as well.

“I’m an American and I’m living here. It’s such a joy to see us all unified, it really embodies this spirit. This is what France is all about,” an American woman living in Paris told RT.

As Les Bleus were hitting the streets, exhibiting the gold trophy in an open-top bus, jets flew over them displaying the red, white and blue of the French tricolor.

The Paris metro has also given its own special welcome to the players, renaming six of its stations after the team and their star coach, Didier Deschamps. Notre-Dame des Champs has temporarily been turned into Notre Didier Deschamps and Champs-Élysées-Clemenceau into Deschamps Elysées-Clémenceau.

“We had to install this fence to protect our communal parking from liters and liters of urine – this obviously cost money. And this was the only solution we came up with, but it is not sufficient,” Oscar, a concerned resident, told RT.

Dozens of migrants, frustrated after days of waiting and sleeping in the streets, have no other option available to them other than to camp in Paris neighborhoods. 

“Summer or winter, we are coming here every week to give food and medicine to the homeless. And with the influx of migrants there are more of them now. We have just distributed around 100 packages with sandwiches and pies, hygienic products and clothes. There are around 100 migrants out there who came from Afghanistan and Syria,” Nadia, a volunteer, told RT.

“The government is doing nothing at all,” she added. “It does not support the associations that help. People who are here [helping migrants] are all volunteers. We receive nothing from the government. We are asking private businesses – shops and bakeries for instance – to help us.”

Pierre Vuarin, a spokesman for a neighborhood association, told RT that, to solve the problem, authorities must first change the system of providing temporary facilities for asylum seekers.

“This system destroys our district, it destroys the image of the asylum seekers’ [and hurts] their rights. This system should be transformed into a decent system to help people return to their countries normally. If this is not done [by] the end of this year, our group will go on a hunger strike.”

Last month, Vuarin and a group of supporters wrote an open letter to President Emmanuel Macron, asking him to take measures.
They said that over the last two years, as many as 40,000 people have spent frustrating nights on a 100m-long sidewalk on Boulevard de la Villette, in northern Paris. Currently, there are more than thirty mini-camps that “appear and disappear” following police crackdowns, the letter said.

“The system of the reception platform for asylum seekers… makes thousands of people wait, forcing them to stay in our neighborhood without food and any roof over their heads. It creates conditions for permanent violence. This system has caused and continues to provoke frequent clashes between different [ethnic] groups. We have witnessed two riots with hundreds of people fighting against each other! There have been dozens of wounded in the last twenty months. Several times a week, police are forced to use tear gas to disperse the queue.”

“If no actions are taken to close down the temporary center for asylum seekers before January 1, we will be launching a hunger strike,” Vuarin and other activists warned.
Macron’s office responded that the French leader was “aware of the difficulties of cohabitation” he referred the problem to the interior ministry, Le Figaro reported.

Alexandra Cordebard, mayor of 10th arrondissement (district) of Paris, said the government had promised the asylum center would be removed by the end of the year.

In August, nearly 2,500 migrants, of mainly African origin, were evicted from a makeshift camp in the north of Paris. They were taken to 18 refugee centers across the French capital.

The numbers of refugees have reportedly grown in Paris following the closure of the infamous Calais ‘Jungle’ camp in the north of France, which was evacuated and razed last year, with over 6,000 of its residents being sent to various housing facilities across France. Following the camp’s closure, many of those displaced, hoping to find asylum in the UK, decided to relocate to the French capital.

Earlier this year, Macron’s government presented a plan to create more than 12,500 places in reception centers for asylum seekers and refugees by 2019.

Macron warned in October that all undocumented migrants convicted of a crime would be deported from the country. “We will take the most severe measures, we will do what we must do,” he said in a televised interview, as cited by AFP. “We’re taking care of the France where things aren’t going well,” the French leader added. His remarks came two weeks after a 29-year-old Tunisian man fatally stabbed two women at the Saint-Charles train station in Marseille.

PARIS — French citizens have chosen centrist Emmanuel Macron and far-right Marine Le Pen to contest the final round of the presidential election, set to take place on May 7.

Macron picked up 23.8 percent of the vote to Le Pen’s 21.5 percent in Sunday’s first round, which saw a higher than expected turnout of 79 percent, according to the French interior ministry.

A 39-year-old former investment banker who has never stood for public office before, Macron is expected to beat Le Pen in the run-off election by a margin of around 20 points.

His support base is in the west of France, and major urban settlements, including the Ile-de-France region that includes Paris.

In the French capital, Macron picked up 35 percent of the vote, compared to Le Pen’s five, perhaps explaining the difficulty in finding voices willing to express support for National Front (FN) leader in the city. 

Al Jazeera asked Parisians how they felt about Sunday’s election and whether they believed a Le Pen victory is possible.

Emma said she was disappointed to see Le Pen go through to the run-off because the far-right leader has mulled taking France out of the EU.

She also fears the language Le Pen has used to describe refugees but does not believe she can beat Macron in the second round.

“I don’t see Marine Le Pen winning because many supporters of (Benoit) Hamon and (Francois) Fillon (eliminated candidates) are going to vote Macron.”

Lisa said it was “crazy” that Le Pen had reached the second round of the election, but added the high level of support for Melenchon among young people was a sign that they wanted change.

“The younger generation want something new, maybe Melenchon is too radical but we are stuck with politicians who do nothing,” she said, adding that she thought Le Pen had little chance of winning.

“All of the left is going to vote for Macron, and also a lot of the right, but we won’t know for sure until it happens.”

Sabrine, Adewele, and Charlene, are student interns at a insurance company in central Paris.

While being interviewed, a colleague outside of the frame joked that they looked like Marine Le Pen’s vision of France.

“One Beur (Arab), one black, one white,” he said sarcastically.

The trio are fans of leftist Jean-Luc Melenchon, but said they would now vote against Le Pen in the upcoming run-off vote.

“I plan to leave France if she becomes the next president,” said Sabrine, adding: “I don’t want my six-month old daughter growing up with Le Pen on her case.”

Adewele agreed and said he would move to an English-speaking country if Le Pen won, but does not think it is likely she will.

Charlene said Macron had “no charisma”, but people would vote for him because they wanted to “avoid having a President Le Pen”.

Hugo

Hugo did not vote in the first round despite being a Melenchon supporter, but said he would not risk the chance of Le Pen winning the second round.

“If French people made the effort to read Le Pen’s programme, they would understand how negative her proposals are,” he said.

“She can win and that’s why I’ll be voting in two weeks, if she does [win] then it’s a failure for France.”

Abdel does not think Le Pen has a realistic chance of winning and thinks France will reject her on May 7:

“She has racist ideas and it’s not possible that France would elect such a president.”

Elodie said she was shocked that Macron had made the second round at the expense of conservative candidate Fillon.

She told Al Jazeera she does not support Le Pen but sexism would count against her.

“Marine Le Pen cannot win because she’s a woman … France is less open minded than people believe,” she said.

Christian called Macron the “face of France” and someone who would “modernise the French political system”.

When asked if Le Pen had a shot at winning, he said: “No, no, no, Marine Le Pen is not going to win … Macron in the Elysee (palace) is already a revolution, Le Pen won’t win now, and neither will she in 2022.”
