Great news for the NRA and other non-profits looking to hide their influence on US democracy: Dark money political organizations will no longer have to disclose where their money is coming from, the Treasury Department announced. The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced Monday that politically active nonprofit groups like the NRA and Planned Parenthood will no longer need to file “personally-identifiable information” about their donors in their annual returns. It described the process as an “unnecessary reporting requirement.” While nonprofit organizations that are tax-exempt due to to their charitable, educational or religious status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code still have to provide information about their donors, other 501(c) tax exempt organizations like social-welfare focused groups and trade associations no longer need to do so. They call Trump’s Supreme Court pick ‘anti-healthcare’, ‘anti-abortion’, & ‘Trump’s rubber stamp’. Do you agree? https://t.co/ORyb9STazm — RT (@RT_com) July 17, 2018 The Treasury Department said the policy will reduce the risk of “inadvertent disclosure” or misuse of confidential information, which it said is an “especially important safeguard for organizations engaged in free speech and free association protected by the First Amendment.” It also said “conservative tax-exempt groups were disproportionately impacted by improper screening” under the Obama administration. The move is likely to be cheered by wealthy donors and conservatives who have long accused the policy of subjecting conservative groups to more scrutiny. One influential group to gain from the new rule is the NRA, which is classed as a social welfare organization and spent $ 35 million on elections in 2016 through its NRA Institute for Legislative Action arm, and $ 54.4 million in total. Others include groups created by the billionaire Charles and David Koch brothers, and the liberal America Votes and Patriot Majority USA. READ MORE: Koch brothers join #Resistance, launch campaign against Trump tariffs These politically active nonprofit groups can participate in political campaigns so long as it isn’t their primary activity. The groups can accept unlimited contributions from individuals and corporations and can also give funds to other nonprofits, which doesn’t count as political spending. This money is often funneled into campaign super PACs, allowing wealthy donors to circumvent individual campaign contribution limits. These groups are also a handy way for corporations and individuals to donate to causes they may not wish to be publicly associated with. Such groups have risen since the 2010 Supreme Court Citizens United ruling that opened the doors for unlimited spending on political activities. Like this story? Share it with a friend!

No longer will he only have to face off with the spawn of the devil, now he has his own spawn to contend with: his estranged daughter Brandy Barr (Arielle Carver-O’Neill). And she’s not too happy to be doused in blood and forced to fight demons.
Starz is taking the season 3 tagline of Ash vs. Evil Dead, “Ash is back, baby!” in a delightfully literal way. Ash is back, yes, and this time he has a baby. Kind of — that baby is all grown up as a young adult daughter who suddenly finds herself in her long-lost father’s care and targeted by Ruby (Lucy Lawless) and the Deadites. But Ash doesn’t have much time to settle down into fatherhood. Ruby is devising her most sinister plan yet to defeat Ash and raise hell on earth, and it involves the biggest Deadite that Ash and co., have ever faced.
Bruce Campbell returns as the genre icon now grappling with a swollen ego; alongside Ray Santiago as Pablo Simon Bolivar, who discovers his destiny in the fight against evil; and Dana DeLorenzo as Kelly Maxwell, who single-mindedly sets her sights on killing Ruby and ending the reign of the Evil Dead.
Newcomers to the cast include Carver O’Neill and Lindsay Farris as Dalton, leader of an ancient order called the Knights of Sumeria. Lee Majors makes a return from beyond the grave as Ash’s father, Brock, to offer his son a word of warning.
Here is the colorful synopsis for the third season of Ash vs. Evil Dead:
The third season finds Ash, having gone from murderous urban legend to humanity-saving hometown hero, discovering that he has a long lost daughter who’s been entrusted in his care. When Kelly witnesses a televised massacre with Ruby’s fingerprints all over it, she returns with a new friend to warn Ash and Pablo that evil isn’t done with them yet. Blood is thicker than water in the battle of good vs Evil Dead.
Ash vs. Evil Dead season 3 will premiere on February 25, 2018 on STARZ.

Kate Middleton, 35, and Prince William, 35, are expecting their third child together after announcing the news in September.
Their children, Prince George, 4, and Princess Charlotte, 2, will have a new brother or sister around April next year.
While the family appear picture-perfect, parenthood hasn’t always been an easy ride for William.
At an event yesterday at the Hornsey Road Children’s Centre, Kate told single dad Billy that the Duke of Cambridge didn’t know exactly what to do when he first became a dad, reports Hello.
Billy is raising his seven-month daughter Violet alone.
Speaking after meeting Kate, he said: “She was saying William was sort of similar and I just wanted to let her know how Family Action have been there for me and I think they need more support.”
While at the event, Kate spoke took the time to speak to mothers and their children.
The Duchess kept her growing baby bump well hidden in a £600 cream coat by Goat.
She covered up from the cold with a pair of black tights and matched the dress with a pair of knee high black boots.
A black dress could be seen peeping out underneath her long coat.
As always the Duchess wore her glossy hair in a pristine bouncy blow-dry, choosing a side-parting.
Kate was originally scheduled to visit the North London centre in early September, but had to cancel last minute due to her severe morning sickness.
In a 2-to-1 ruling Wednesday, an Eighth US Circuit Court of Appeals panel in St. Louis vacated a federal judge’s preliminary injunction forbidding the enforcement of Governor Asa Hutchinson’s directive to delay Medicaid reimbursements to a Planned Parenthood affiliate.
The ruling states that three unnamed female patients do not have the right to challenge the state’s decision to end the Medicaid contract. The women and Planned Parenthood legally challenged Hutchinson’s August 2015 order a month later.
US Circuit Judge Steven Colloton wrote in favor of overturning the decision: “We conclude only that Congress did not unambiguously confer the particular right asserted by the patients in this case.”
Judge Michael Melloy noted in his dissent that several other courts have ruled the opposite way, and insisted that the patients do have a right to challenge the contract termination.
Planned Parenthood stated that it is considering options to challenge the appeals court decision. The ruling does not officially go into effect until the court issues its mandate in about one to two weeks. The organization says that it is still serving Medicaid patients in Arkansas.
“We will do everything in our power to protect our patients’ access to birth control, cancer screenings, and other lifesaving care,” Chief Medical Officer for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Dr. Raegan McDonald-Mosley, said in a statement.
“Extreme politicians are trying to defund and shut down Planned Parenthood and this is not what Americans want. Every person deserves the opportunity to lead a healthy life and access care at a provider they know and trust, no matter who you are or where you live,” McDonald-Mosley said.
The state of Arkansas said Planned Parenthood received $ 51,000 in Medicaid funds in the fiscal year before Hutchinson made the 2015 ruling to end the state’s contract. However, none of that money directly paid for abortions.
Last month, US District Court Judge Kristine Baker blocked Arkansas from enforcing four new abortion restrictions, including a ban on a common second-trimester procedure.
A different unnamed federal judge is now considering whether to stop another new law that would allow Arkansas to revoke or suspend an abortion clinic’s license for any violation, according to the Associated Press.
In a different case last month, the Eighth Circuit vacated another preliminary injunction that Judge Baker set forth, which prevented Arkansas from enforcing new limits regarding the use of the abortion pill.
Fallout from the secretly recorded videos released in 2015 by the anti-abortion Center for Medical Progress allegedly show Planned Parenthood officials negotiating the sale of fetal body tissue for profit.
After the pro-life group published the controversial videos, a Texas grand jury cleared Planned Parenthood of any misuse of fetal tissue.

Joss Whedon’s “crushing depression” began in November, when election results swung the United States to the right. But in mid-March, the writer-director behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Avengers, and Avengers: Age of Ultron was resisting despair as he worked through the last day of a three-day shoot for Unlocked, his short film promoting Planned Parenthood.
That afternoon, Whedon’s crew was setting up a scene in which a woman with breast cancer collapses in pain in her kitchen, dropping her groceries on the floor. The fictional character’s illness had gone undiagnosed because she had no access to preventive screenings — her local Planned Parenthood health center had been shuttered.
“Women’s healthcare is so much just about women’s humanity,” Whedon told BuzzFeed News from the Los Angeles set. “It is about whether they have control over their bodies and whether they have control over their minds and their education and their decisions. It’s all wrapped up.”
Planned Parenthood first approached Whedon to propose a film project about a year ago, he said. He and the organization’s president, Cecile Richards, discussed doing something celebratory for their centennial in October of 2016.
But that conversation happened in different world: Though Republicans have tried to defund Planned Parenthood before, they didn’t always control the White House and Congress. When Whedon started shooting this spring, a male lawmaker had recently wondered aloud why prenatal care should be required from health insurers; days after the shoot ended, a male senator would flippantly — and quickly regret— saying, “I wouldn’t want to lose my mammograms.” The Congressional Budget Office reported that the first version of the American Health Care Act would cut federal funding according to four criteria that were only met by Planned Parenthood and its affiliates. “The people most likely to experience reduced access to care would probably reside in areas without other health care clinics or medical practitioners who serve low-income populations,” the CBO concluded.
The newest version of the AHCA — which aims to repeal the Affordable Care Act — also eliminates Medicaid reimbursements for Planned Parenthood, effectively blocking low-income Americans who receive Medicaid benefits from accessing care at the nonprofit. This version passed the House on May 4, and is currently being debated in the Senate.
Whedon launched the promotional short film in anticipation of Senate deliberations over the fate of the bill — and Planned Parenthood. A significant portion of the 2.5 million people who seek their services each year have very limited options, he said, and in Unlocked he tried to reflect the healthcare provider’s broad array of services, including breast cancer screenings, sex education, and access to birth control.
Though he wrote and directed Unlocked, everything in it “has been generated from the women of Planned Parenthood and the stories they told me. … It’s not my voice that should be the last one heard, and I would be very happy if it were not even necessary to be a part of it. But we haven’t gotten there yet.” He urged for men to actively support women’s causes; he’s trying to contribute by directing and financing the video. (He also previously partnered with Planned Parenthood for a fundraising initiative in 2015.) “I think the role of men is — like any ally — to help, to observe, and act in the world in a way that’s helpful. To speak up when it’s time to speak up and to shut up when it’s time to shut up, which is the one we’ve never mastered.” (It’s a lesson he also had to learn for himself.)
Since Donald Trump has become president, many progressive issues have returned to the fore. After the election, “it wasn’t as easy for me to go, ‘Let us take up arms!’” — he’d spent the months during the presidential campaign making a series of ads indirectly promoting the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. “I was just tired.”
But Whedon hopes his short film can help bring some focus back to women’s reproductive healthcare and Planned Parenthood specifically. He does not consider himself an activist, though: “Because I will speak out, and because I have for a long time, I think I get mistaken for a real activist. But then you meet them,” he said, referring to people like the Planned Parenthood volunteers he’d encountered while researching the short. “You meet people who are truly informed and truly articulate and truly have dedicated themselves and given things up for the cause, and you’re like, ‘Okay, I made a video, so I’m cool too.’ … I really am just kind of a worker bee in this particular instance, trying to help the people who are doing the actual work.”
President Donald Trump took a big swing at Planned Parenthood on Thursday, signing off on legislation that would allow states to withhold Title X funds from abortion providers.
Vice President Mike Pence had all but sealed the deal on March 30, when he cast the deciding vote both in a procedural vote and in the final vote landing the bill on Trump’s desk.
Title X funds go toward services like cervical and breast cancer screenings, birth control, STI treatment and well-woman exams — not abortion, thanks to the Hyde Amendment, which bans any federal dollars from funding abortion services.
Nevertheless, the Trump administration was happy to move forward with a measure that Planned Parenthood says impacts more than four million of their patients.
“Planned Parenthood strongly opposes President Trump’s willingness to undermine millions of women’s access to birth control through the Title X family planning program,” Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, wrote in a press release. “Four million people depend on the Title X family planning program, and by signing this bill, President Trump disregards their health and well-being.”

Some states have already reaffirmed their commitment to Planned Parenthood, maintaining they will continue fund the clinics even if Congress won’t.
On Friday, Maryland legislators — without the signature of Gov. Larry Hogan — passed a law that requires the state to reimburse Planned Parenthood of any funds denied to it by the federal government, effectively making the funding of Planned Parenthood law.
Trump, however, offered the clinic a chance to earn back its federal funding. In March, the president dangled $ 550 million over Planned Parenthood’s head if the clinic agreed to stop performing abortions.
It was a no for Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards.
“That is just not going to happen,” Richards told the New York Times. “We would never abandon the women who count on us in exchange for cash.”

A federal appeals court on Wednesday upheld (PDF) a lower’s court’s injunction barring anti-abortion activists from distributing video they secretly recorded of Planned Parenthood conferences and of other meetings with women’s healthcare providers.
A San Francisco federal judge initially handed down an injunction on the side of the National Abortion Federation in 2015, after being convinced that the activists had signed agreements that they would not disseminate any information from the meetings with women’s healthcare providers. The case attracted attention from media rights groups like the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, which argued that a prior restraint on publication bears a “heavy presumption against its constitutional validity.” (PDF)
Some of the footage, meanwhile, was of activists trying to get fetal tissue from Planned Parenthood.

Immigration. Women’s equality. Transgender rights.
These are just three of the most recent social issues that have found their way into the spotlight of our political consciousness. They aren’t new to the scene, as people has been lobbying for either side for decades, but they’re being paid particular attention because of actions taken by the Trump administration.
As the United States finds itself more divided than ever, technology companies are wading into the political waters not with their vocal opinion, but through activism such as filing amicus briefs in court cases, petitioning the government, and more.
Corporate advocacy is nothing new, but tech companies such as Facebook, Google, Apple, and Microsoft are among the biggest businesses in the world, and they have the ability to reach millions, if not billions, of people around the world and shape their thinking. In a time when the White House is likely to face staunch opposition over its policies, some suggest companies define what their values really are.
VentureBeat spoke with Tumblr’s social impact and public policy lead Victoria McCullough and Planned Parenthood’s executive vice president and chief brand officer Dawn Laguens to find out how and why the practice of staying silent no longer satisfies.
“The third rail is changing,” Laguens said. “The third rail used to be companies should not get involved — they’re a blank canvas and should just do their business. Tech companies have changed companies. They have become personalities. They’re an expression of their users.”
She believes that if companies stay silent on issues, it could have a detrimental impact on usage and the bottom line. “It’s becoming the third-rail for companies with their users that if they remain a blank slate and have no values or point of view on the world, their users will abandon them. It’s a big shift in what we’re seeing in the world. People have higher expectations with companies,” Laguens said.
While there are plenty of examples of tech companies standing up for various issues, such as net neutrality, LGBTQ rights, immigration, and privacy, some in the industry question the wisdom of speaking out. Tumblr spent time thinking about this before settling on a rule of thumb: whether the company could contribute anything to the fight and whether it would have an impact.
“We’re still thinking through a lot of this,” McCullough admitted. “What we’re seeing now and why we feel so compelled to act with swiftness and again be a little more definitive on a certain issues, we do feel like [the president’s Executive Orders] are impacting a group that does not have a voice and does not have the political space to advocate for themselves.”
Above: Protests at the headquarters of Google in Mountain View, January 30, 2017. 2,000 Google workers from campuses around the world staged a walkout.
She does believe that some members of the Tumblr community will feel alienated as a result of what the Yahoo-owned company is doing, but she “feels confident that a majority of users that come to Tumblr, stay on Tumblr, and feel it’s a place to connect with one another because we do stand up for our values on the platform.”
As the U.S. government continues its war against the media, both facts and “alternate facts” are being spread around the country. Planned Parenthood is no stranger to that fight — it’s often vilified for providing abortions, including in a now-debunked video “exposé” that surfaced during the 2016 presidential election. Due to all the fake news and hate speech rampant across the internet, Laguens believes the time is now for companies to stand up and be counted. “In the new world order, [companies] can be an open platform to do whatever you want, but [they] have become so prominent in this country as actors in this civic drama and have to step forward,” she said.

Tumblr said it has been an advocate for societal issues “for a while,” raising awareness of things like wage equality, but now it has teamed up with Planned Parenthood to push for reproductive health. It’s not stopping there, though — the company is planning to advocate on four other issues this year, including LGBTQ equality, mental health, racial justice such as Black Lives Matter, and freedom of expression related to media protection and supporting net neutrality.
“We were focused on education last year and kept an eye on issues we could make an impact on. We’re not only about education, but moving users to a place where they can really expand their perspective on issues they didn’t know anything about or had different opinions on and learn from each other,” McCullough said. “We’re moving our users from being educated online to taking offline action — it’s about the long-term game here.”

This week, Tumblr and Planned Parenthood are in Austin, Texas to participate in the 2017 South by Southwest Interactive conference to speak on community activism. This conversation, led by Tumblr CEO David Karp and Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, precedes a party to raise awareness of health care information for women and to protect reproductive rights.
The day after their panel discussion, the groups will put on a “Never Going Back” rally to encourage support of Planned Parenthood’s mission.
“We felt that post-election, we saw from our community that did care about reproductive rights really fearing for the security of Planned Parenthood and saw community engagement around what’s at stake for [the organization]. It makes so much sense that the timing of our party really gave Tumblr an opportunity to step in,” McCullough said.
Tumblr’s relationship with Planned Parenthood is close; not only does the nonprofit organization use the social platform to communicate with followers and supporters, but Karp is also on the Planned Parenthood board of directors.

“We got to know the people at Tumblr and were able to really think about how to reach a new generation, particularly around health and reproductive health information and we had started engaging on more of our caregiving, supporter, and activist side — what we’re seeing coming up. It was about how to reach young people and learn and listen to them on Tumblr as Planned Parenthood was building out its own apps and community,” Laguens explained.
Tumblr’s support as a corporate citizen, Laguens believes, could spur similar action from other companies. “I think they are going to unleash a flood of other organizations and corporations that say that this is what the new moment demands of us,” she said.
But regardless of whether companies stand up and be counted, Laguens was staunch in her belief that Planned Parenthood will still be around in the long term. “We plan to be here as long as people need us,” she said. “No matter what hurdles go up, we’re finding new, better, and personalized ways to deliver health care information.”
