The comments came as the President was congratulating the elite athletes — who participated in the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang last month and visited the White House overnight.
Footage from the event shows Mr Trump, who infamously mocked a disabled journalist on the campaign trail, begin by flattering the team with compliments.
“When you win a gold medal, you know it’s a good team,” he said as he called Olympians up to “say a few words”.
“Do we have any quitters here?” he then asked. “Because if so, I was gonna say, ‘Get the hell out!’”
The speech then took an unexpected turn, with footage showing Mr Trump saying he had a “tough” time watching American Paralympians compete in South Korea.
“What happened with the Paralympics was so incredible and so inspiring to me. And I watched — it’s a little tough to watch too much, but I watched as much as I could,” he said.
Mr Trump’s comments immediately came under scrutiny on social media — where hundreds of commenters have reacted angrily.
“Imagine losing your legs then fighting your way to the top of a new sport only to be INSULTED by the President of the United States,” musician Mikel Jollett tweeted.
Trump was widely slammed after he made fun of Serge Kovaleski, a New York Times reporter who has arthrogryposis, a condition causing contractures in his right arm and hand.
“You’ve got to see this guy: ‘Uhh, I don’t know what I said. Uhh, I don’t remember,’ he’s going like, ‘I don’t remember. Maybe that’s what I said,’” Trump said during a campaign rally in South Carolina on Nov. 24, 2015, twisting his right arm and hand in a way seemingly meant to mimic Mr Kovaleski’s disability.
The US brought home 13 gold medals and 36 medals at the 2018 Paralympics, more than any other country.
It is standard for the White House to honour Olympians and Paralympians after the games, however fewer athletes attended this year’s event than when President Obama held the same event in 2014.
According to USA Today, only 150 athletes attended Trump’s ceremony while in 2014 about 200 attended Obama’s event.
Para nordic star Mark Arendz leads the way at the Pyeongchang closing ceremony starting on Sunday as the Canadian contingent celebrates its best-ever Winter Paralympics performance.
Click on the video player below for described video.
Arendz won five individual medals in as many events at the Games and added a cross-country mixed relay silver for his sixth in Pyeongchang.
“This is an absolute honour and a privilege to receive the flag from my teammate, mentor and hero Brian McKeever [who carried the flag in the opening ceremony] to lead a record-setting group of Canadian athletes,” Arendz said in a press release.
“I hope the next generation of young Canadians see me carrying that flag in and are inspired the same way I was to chase their dreams.”
Canada set a new national Paralympic record with 28 medals in Pyeongchang, eclipsing the previous best of 19 from the 2010 Games in Vancouver. Canadian Paralympians earned eight gold, four silver and 16 bronze in South Korea.

As another Paralympic Games come to a close, we’ve become used to seeing amazing performances from athletes around world.
But it’s worth noting how far the Paralympic movement has come in the past thirty years – especially in the same host country of South Korea.
In 1988, corporate sponsors, television rights, and the overall commercialization of the Paralympics were still a distant dream.
But 1988 proved to be a major stepping stone for the Paralympic movement. It would mark the first time the Paralympics would be hosted at the same site as the Olympics.
This would provide the Paralympic movement with a much-needed boost for its athletes and prospective sponsors. Before the 1988 Seoul Paralympics, the games were played in more modest venues, with almost no spectators in attendance.
In fact, with no established relationship with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Paralympics were often split into two different cities at the same time and had limited world-wide exposure.
The Seoul Paralympics gave para athletes the opportunity to use the same venues as their Olympic counterparts.
From an athlete perspective, this milestone was huge.
New Westminster, B.C., native Daniel Wesley competed in his first Paralympic Games in 1988.
Wesley, now retired, is one of Canada’s most decorated Paralympic athletes of all time. He went on to earn 12 Paralympic medals – five of them gold – in both the Summer and Winter Games.
“Even if the stands were not as full as the Olympics, the energy and excitement was still there,” Wesley said.
“When I first took part in Seoul, I thought it was the biggest hurdle and reward the IOC could give the Paralympic movement, and now it’s just the norm that athletes compete in the same venues.”
While no formal agreement between the IOC and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) would come together for a few more years, there is no doubt that Seoul paved the way for future Paralympic Games.
This past week, the IPC announced a partnership agreement with the IOC that will run through 2032. The agreement builds upon the existing cooperation agreement. Both the IOC and IPC will work together to increase the overall viability of the Games and also help with funding support for the Paralympics.
The agreement further illustrates how far the relationship between the two has come since their initial cooperation.
With the Paralympics on financially-stable ground, what can we expect in thirty more years?
Tennis Canada’s national wheelchair tennis coach, Kai Schrameyer, believes that the sport and the overall ability of the athletes will continue to see the biggest evolution.
Schrameyer, a German silver medallist in wheelchair tennis at the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics, has witnessed many changes to wheelchair and prosthetic technology that have helped push athletes even further.
While these changes have likely helped create more global exposure for the Paralympics, Schrameyer believes there could be a downside.
“The Paralympic movement will increasingly attract athletes with ‘minimal disabilities’ raising the quality of the competition, which inadvertently will lead to more and more athletes with more severe disabilities being pushed out of the Games.”
The IPC’s vision is “to enable para athletes to achieve sporting excellence and inspire and excite the world” while also creating conditions for “athlete empowerment.” But with a segment of the para-athlete community that may be left out due to the severity of their disability, it remains to be seen how the IPC will ensure opportunities will be given to all types of ability levels.
“The Paralympics will continue to grow,” Schrameyer said. “It will follow the Olympic motto of ‘faster, higher, stronger.'”

Para nordic star Mark Arendz was named Canada’s flag-bearer for the closing ceremony of the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Arendz has won five medals so far at the Games — including a long-coveted biathlon gold and his first cross-country medals — and has a chance to win one more in the 4×2.5-kilometre mixed relay event on Saturday at 9 p.m. ET. He also won a silver and bronze at the Sochi Paralympics in 2014.
Canada set a new national Paralympic record with 24 medals in Pyeongchang, eclipsing the previous best of 19 from the 2010 Games in Vancouver. Canadian Paralympians earned eight gold, one silver and 15 bronze with one day of competition still remaining in South Korea.
CBC will stream the closing ceremony live on Sunday at 6 a.m. ET at CBCSports.ca and on the CBC Sports app. Described video will also be offered for the ceremony.
Arendz opened these Paralympics with a silver in the men’s 7.5 km standing biathlon. Still craving the first biathlon gold in Canadian Paralympic history, the 28-year-old from Hartsville, P.E.I., took a risk on the final shooting interval of the 12.5 km standing event and missed his first shot.
He still earned bronze despite the gamble, but that elusive gold still loomed large in his mind.
“That’s what I came here for, that gold medal,” Arendz told CBC Sports’ Devin Heroux after the event.
Arendz went on to win his first-career Paralympic cross-country medal — a bronze in the standing sprint — before finally capturing biathlon gold in the 15 km event. He shot cleanly at all four intervals to deny France’s Benjamin Daviet a golden three-peat.
“Mark has been one of the absolute standout stories of these Paralympic Games for Canada,” said Todd Nicholson, Team Canada’s chef de mission. “He is a phenomenal Canadian, athlete, and person, and we are in awe of his talent and unrelenting dedication.”
Arendz credits his improved skiing to working with idol Brian McKeever, Canada’s most decorated Winter Paralympian and the flag-bearer from the opening ceremony. Arendz — who also won bronze in the men’s 10 km cross-country race — is in no hurry to see the 38-year-old go, but is ready to take up the mantle of Canada’s premier para nordic skier when the time comes.
“I want to be one of the best and I’ve been working towards that since I started this sport really,” Arendz told CBC Sports’ Benjamin Blum before the Games.”That’s a goal between now and before I call it a career, that I want to be able to be a contender no matter what the race, whether it’s a biathlon or a cross-country, classic or skate.”

A trio of medals in biathlon from Mark Arendz, Brittany Hudak, and Collin Cameron pushed Canada’s total to 19.
With the Canadian para ice hockey team having secured a spot in the gold-medal game, Canada is guaranteed it’s best-ever finish at a Paralympic Winter Games, surpassing the 19 medals won in Vancouver.
Medals will be awarded in alpine skiing, wheelchair curling, and cross-country skiing — all of which Canada is expected to contend for the podium.
Marcoux and guide Jack Leitch go for their third medal of the Games in the visually impaired category. The 20-year-old from Sault Ste-Marie, Ont., opened the Paralympics with a gold in the downhill and added a bronze in the giant slalom.
Marcoux won gold four years ago in Sochi, Russia in the slalom event.
Guimond looks to add another medal in the standing category (9:20 p.m. ET). Earlier in the Games, the 18-year-old picked up a bronze in the giant slalom event. Braydon Luscombe and Kirk Schornstein are also competing.
Kurt Oatway and Alex Cairns lead Canada’s medal hopes in the sitting category (10:10 p.m. ET). Oatway already has a gold from the super-G competition.
Canada’s heartbreaking 4-3 loss to China in the semifinal guarantees a new Paralympic champion. Since its inception in 2006, a Canadian team had won every gold medal.
Mark Ideson’s rink looks to regroup against the host nation, who were defeated 8-6 by Norway in the other semifinal.
In their only previous meeting, Korea defeated Canada 7-5 in the round robin.
McKeever can add another accomplishment to his resume in the men’s 10-kilometre classic style event in the visually impaired category. Should the 38-year-old top the field once again, he would complete the “triple treble” — a sweep of all three individual men’s cross-country events for the third consecutive Winter Paralympics.
Arendz is coming off his fourth medal of the Games, finally capturing the elusive gold in the men’s 15K biathlon race in the standing category. The 28-year-old is the lone Canadian competing in the men’s 10K classic style event (9:15 p.m. ET).
Hudak leads a trio of Canadians in the women’s 7.5K classic style competition in the standing category (10:45 p.m. ET). The 24-year-old captured bronze in the 12.5K biathlon race.
Hudak will be joined in competition by teammates Emily Young and Natalie Wilke.
Two-time medallist Collin Cameron is among six Canadians competing in the men’s 7.5K race in the sitting category (11:40 p.m. ET). The 29-year-old won both of his medals in biathlon and has a pair of top-five finishes in cross-country.
Chris Klebl, Derek Zaplotinsky, Ethan Hess, Sebastien Fortier, and Yves Bourque are also competing in the 7.5K event.
Cindy Ouellet is the only Canadian competing in the women’s 5K race in the sitting category (11:55 p.m. ET). The 29-year-old is making her Winter Paralympic debut after having competed in three previous Summer Games in wheelchair basketball.
Broadcasts of the Games, which run March 9-18, will be available daily on CBC and Radio-Canada with live streams hosted on the CBC Sports app, as well as CBC.ca/sports/paralympics and Radio-Canada.ca/Jeuxparalympiques.
Daily coverage of the 10-day event on CBC will total 38 hours, with live reporting from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturdays and 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Sundays.
Canadians will also be able to keep track of the athletes through highlights shown Monday to Friday between 4 p.m and 6 p.m.

Sometimes curling teams are on the wrong side of the inch. That was the case four years ago for China at the Paralympics.
Today, it was Canada’s turn.
The semifinal was a rematch from four years ago when Canada played China in the semis in Sochi. On that day, China’s skip Wang Haitao was heavy with his last rock in the final end to give Canada a 5-4 win. Canada would go on to win a third-straight Paralympic gold medal.
Today, Haitao was faced with having to make his last shot against Canada yet again to win the game. Wang was looking at two Canadian stones in the four-foot and needed to play a tough tap back for the win.
It was absolutely perfect — redemption four years in the making. The win sent the Chinese team into a frenzy while a disappointed Canadian squad watched them celebrate.
“I didn’t even look at that shot,” Canadian skip Mark Ideson said. “I thought he’d play the double all day long.”
“Good on him. He called it, made it and they have a chance to win gold.”
Canada and China played a relatively open game throughout, throwing takeouts up and down the sheet. With the score tied 3-3 in the final end, China capitalized with the last rock advantage.
But it was a game that could have went either way — and Ideson knows it.
“This is sport. Anything can happen. We put ourselves in a good position to win gold and it just didn’t happen for us,” he said.
China moves on to play Norway for gold on Saturday at 1:35 a.m. ET, while Canada plays South Korea in the bronze medal game Friday at 8:35 p.m. ET.
Drama ensued late in the seventh end with the score tied 3-3. Canadian third Ina Forrest was playing a takeout on the Chinese stone; she made the hit, sending China’s rock into a Canadian stone on the edge of the 12-foot and then into Ideson’s wheelchair.
The rock came to an abrupt halt when it hit Ideson’s chair. It was a burned rock, but it appeared to be spinning out of the rings.
It also wasn’t the closest rock to the button, but Haitao pushed it forward so that it was. The move brought the officials onto the ice to discuss.
After a lengthy delay — and the officials trying to explain to Haitao the rock was going out — the Chinese skip decided to leave the rock in the back of the rings.
“I don’t think it affected the end. It was his call,” Ideson said. “I think it would have went out but it wasn’t up to me.”
“It was my fault and he had the choice.”
Curling rules clearly state it’s up to the non-offending team to decide where the rock was going to end up, but curling etiquette is another thing entirely.
“The officials knew it was going to go out. They were just trying to make the right decision,” Ideson said. “They said it was going to go out.”
Ideson said while it didn’t affect the way the end played out — a blank — he said it did impact what shot he played with his last stone.
While disappointed by the loss, the Canadian team is now refocusing for the bronze medal game against Korea.
It will be the first time Canada leaves a Paralympic Games without a curling gold; the country was the three-time defending champions coming into Pyeongchang.
But the rink isn’t losing sight of what a medal would mean.
“We’ll pat each other on the back and come back ready to play,” Ideson said. “We have a lot to be proud of. We’ll go see our families and get some rest [and] nutrition.”
Second Dennis Thiessen was a part of the gold-winning team four years ago. He knows what the thrill of victory is like and while it won’t be the colour he was hoping for, the Sanford, Man., native would love nothing more to bring home another medal for Canada.
“We’re going in there as if we’re going for the gold medal. If we can win a bronze we’re going to be proud,” he said.
Then there was 57-year-old Marie Wright from Moose Jaw, Sask., who came off the ice still smiling. The single mother of four, who is a paraplegic, has been through a lot to get here, but kept perspective after the loss.
“Sometimes it just doesn’t go your way,” the first-time Paralympian said. “We’ll be ready for the bronze and never give up.”

The quest for a wheelchair curling four-peat at the Paralympics continues for Canada, with the rink set to face China in the semifinals on Friday at 2:35 a.m. ET.
In the team’s round-robin game earlier in Pyeongchang, the Canadians rallied from a 5-1 deficit to beat China 8-5.
It has been a total team effort on the sheet so far from Mark Ideson, Ina Forrest, Dennis Thiessen, Marie Wright and alternate James Anseeuw, who went 9-2 in round-robin play.
Mark Arendz has one more shot at winning an elusive biathlon gold in Pyeongchang. Arendz — who owns biathlon silver and bronze as well as cross-country bronze from these Games — competes in the men’s 15-kilometre event tonight.
Canada’s snowboarders are back on the hill for the Paralympic debut of banked slalom.
The seven Canadian competitors were shut out of the snowboard cross podium earlier at the Games; Michelle Salt was the top Canadian, finishing fourth in the women’s LL1 event.
Broadcasts of the Games, which run March 9-18, will be available daily on CBC and Radio-Canada with live streams hosted on the CBC Sports app, as well as CBC.ca/sports/paralympics and Radio-Canada.ca/Jeuxparalympiques.

The pressure will be on four Para ice hockey teams playing in the two semifinal games at the Gangneung Hockey Centre.
The Canadians have committed to a demanding fitness-first system in trying to capture the country’s first Paralympic gold since 2006, and the on-ice results so far — the team outscored its opponents 35-0 in group play — speak for themselves.
The United States continues its quest for a third straight Paralympic title when it takes on Italy in the other semifinal on Thursday at 7 a.m. ET.
It has been a total team effort on the sheet so far from Mark Ideson, Ina Forrest, Dennis Thiessen, Marie Wright and alternate James Anseeuw, who need one more win to secure a playoff spot in wheelchair curling.
Ideson’s rink rallied for another comeback win — this time against the Neutral Paralympic Athletes — and then held on to beat Slovakia 9-5 in the second match Wednesday.
Broadcasts of the Games, which run March 9-18, will be available daily on CBC and Radio-Canada with live streams hosted on the CBC Sports app, as well as CBC.ca/sports/paralympics and Radio-Canada.ca/Jeuxparalympiques.

Canada added three more medals to bring its total count to 10 at the 2018 Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Medals will be up for grabs in the men’s slalom and cross-country skiing while Canada also looks to move closer to locking up a semifinal spot in wheelchair curling.
Cameron leads a group of six Canadians in the men’s sprint competition in the sitting category. Earlier in the Games, the Sudbury, Ont., native won bronze in biathlon in the men’s 7.5-kilometre sitting sprint.
Chris Klebl, Derek Zaplotinsky, Ethan Hess, Sebastien Fortier, and Yves Bourque are also competing in the sitting category.
Cindy Ouellet looks to improve on her performance in the women’s sprint competition in the sitting category (9:25 p.m. ET) after failing to finish in the 12K race. The 29-year-old is making her Winter Paralympic debut after having competed in three previous Summer Games in wheelchair basketball.
Arendz looks for his third medal of the Games in the men’s sprint classic style in the standing category (9:48 p.m. ET). The Hartsville, P.E.I., native will surpass his total from Sochi with another podium finish.
Brittany Hudak, Emily Young, and Natalie Wilkie will compete in the women’s sprint class style in the standing category (10:07 p.m. ET). Hudak finished fifth in the 10K biathlon.
Canada’s most decorated Winter Paralympian is back on the hunt for more medals. McKeever will go for his 15th career medal in the men’s sprint classic style in the visually impaired category (10:24 p.m. ET).
The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., native has failed to finish his last two events after winning gold in the men’s downhill race in the visually impaired category.
Marcoux’s fortunes could change in the slalom competition where he’s the defending champion.
Alexis Guimond, Braydon Luscombe, and Kirk Schornstein look for their first medal of the Games in the standing category (9:30 p.m. ET). Guimond’s best result came in the downhill competition where he was fourth.
Oatway looks to bounce back after failing to finish the first run of the men’s super combined. The 34-year-old already has a gold in the super-G.
Oatway and Alex Cairns of Squamish, B.C. will compete in the sitting category (10:30 p.m. ET).
Canada got back on track with a pair of come-from-behind wins against China and the U.S. Mark Ideson’s rink currently sits in sole possession of third place with a record of 5-2.
Canada has four games remaining in the round robin after which the top four teams will qualify for the semifinals. The Neutral Paralympic Athletes are right on the heels of the Canadians with a 4-3 record while the Slovakians are tied for seventh with a 3-4 record.
