His last of five Paralympic competitions came in 2016 at Rio, where the Longueuil, Que., native finished third in the men's 400-metre freestyle S10 for his 20th medal.

"It's time to hang up my Speedo," the 20-year national team member said in a statement released by Swimming Canada. "It was the greatest of honours to represent our country and I'm proud to have been able to fulfill all my competitive dreams.

"Sport is the most amazing school of life and I had the privilege of being its student for the past 25 years."

The nine-time Paralympic champion, who also won 32 medals across seven world championships, was born with a malformation in his right leg commonly known as club foot.

At his first Paralympic Games at Sydney in 2000, Huot won three gold medals and three silver. He followed that performance with his most productive Games four years later, capturing five gold and a silver in Athens.

The reality is that Benoit has transcended sport and will leave a legacy of sportsmanship, courage and dignity.— Swimming Canada CEO Ahmed El-Awadi on retiring Paralympian Benoit Huot

Huot was named Canada's flag-bearer at the closing ceremony at the 2012 Paralympics in London after a three-medal effort, including a world record in the 200 individual medley SM10.

"Benoit is one of the most celebrated Paralympians worldwide but he is so much more than all the accolades and achievements I could list," said Swimming Canada CEO Ahmed El-Awadi. "The reality is that Benoit has transcended sport and will leave a legacy of sportsmanship, courage and dignity."

Benoit Huot: By the numbers

  • First Team Canada appearance: 1998 (age 14)
  • Number of world championship medals as a 14-year-old: 6
  • Number of Commonwealth Games medals: 4
  • Number of Parapan Am Games medals: 12
  • Number of years awarded Swimming Canada's male para-swimmer of the year: 12
  • Number of current major long-course records: 10 (Six Canadian, two Americas, one world championship, one Parapan Am Games)

El-Awadi added Huot "was and will always be an ambassador for swimming, the entire Paralympic movement, and an inspiration to anyone who feels they can't do or achieve something."

WATCH | Huot on what remains within the Paralympic movement:

After 20 years representing Canada all over the world, swimmer Benoit Huot is retiring. He's seen the Paralympic movement go through many changes since the early nineties , and Huot tells CBC Sports' Jacqueline Doorey what more needs to be done. 3:39

In 2015, he competed at the IPC world championships and Glasgow and later that summer at the Parapan Am Games in Toronto, earning a gold and four silver.

Numerous accolades

On Dec. 30, 2016, Huot was named a member of the Order of Canada, which celebrates Canadians who have excelled in their field or who have demonstrated exceptional dedication or service to their country.

Huot was made a Knight of the National Order of Quebec last year for "outstanding achievement" in his field and is a multiple recipient of the "Person with a Disability of the Year" King Clancy Award.

Paralympian Benoit Huot, left, who was invested as member of the Order of Canada by Governor General David Johnston in 2017, has retired from competitive swimming at age 35. He won 20 Paralympic medals, including nine gold, and 32 medals across six world championships. (Fred Chartrand/Canadian Press/File)

Now a swimming commentator for ICI Radio-Canada Télé, Huot now intends to continue his mission with youth with disabilities through various initiatives, including the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Foundation and Canadian Paralympic Committee.

Mike Thompson, Huot's coach at the High Performance Centre in Quebec, became attracted to the Paralympic movement after learning of the swimmer's vision to have a Paralympic medal mean as much as an Olympic medal.

"It inspires me to stay here until that vision becomes a reality," Thompson told Swimming Canada. "I know that Ben will be successful, no matter what he does. I've seen him tackle a lot of things and I've seen him identify and capitalize on the best opportunities under stress and through adversity. It's just in his nature; he's a winner."

Aurélie Rivard on Huet: 'He inspired me to work hard'

Aurélie  Rivard, who was named para-swimmer of the year by Swimming Canada in 2015 along with Huot, told Swimming Canada that he has been an important person in her career.

"I owe him a lot," she said of Huot, who began swimming as an eight-year-old. "He inspired me to work hard and push beyond myself every day to achieve my goals.

"It makes me sad I will no longer share a lane with him."

Added 1992 Canadian Olympic swim champion Mark Tewksbury: "Benoit Huot is like the Michael Phelps of Canadian Paralympic swimming. Iconic and legendary. But beyond his athletic achievements, it is his leadership and example that he will be most remembered for.

"Benoit was an excellent swimmer but was an even better teammate. He set the tone for the next generation of excellence in Canadian Paralympic swimming."

Malaysia stripped of Paralympic event over ban on Israelis https://briefnews.eu/malaysia-stripped-of-paralympic-event-over-ban-on-israelis/ https://briefnews.eu/malaysia-stripped-of-paralympic-event-over-ban-on-israelis/#respond Sun, 27 Jan 2019 15:54:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/malaysia-stripped-of-paralympic-event-over-ban-on-israelis/

Malaysia has been stripped of the hosting rights for the World Para Swimming Championships after refusing to let Israelis compete in the event that serves as a qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

The Malaysian government said earlier this month that no Israeli delegates can enter Malaysia for sporting or other events in solidarity with the Palestinians. Malaysia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel.

The swimming championships were due to be staged July 29-Aug. 4 in Kuching.

The International Paralympic Committee on Sunday said its governing board meeting in London decided to take the event from Malaysia after it "failed to provide the necessary guarantees that Israeli Para swimmers could participate, free from discrimination, and safely in the championships. This includes full compliance with the IPC protocols related to anthems and flags, and where required the provision of relevant visas."

Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon responded to the decision on Twitter: “This is a victory of values over hatred and bigotry, a strong statement in favour of freedom and equality. Thank you @Paralympics for your brave decision !!!”

Israel's Paralympics governing body also welcomed the decision.

"The Israeli Paralympic Committee thanks the International Paralympic Committee for its brave decision, which reflects the Paralympic spirit of equality among nations regardless of race, gender and religion," it said in a statement.

With the IPC looking for a new host, the deadline for expressions of interest is Feb. 11.

The Canadian Paralympic Committee issued a statement, applauding the IPC for taking appropriate action and relocating the event.

"Inclusion is one of our key values, and we believe all athletes who qualify should be allowed to compete at a sporting event," the CPC stated. "Political reasons should not play a part in whether an athlete can participate and any form of discrimination should not be tolerated.

"All athletes deserve to compete in a safe and inclusive environment."

Greatness abounds as Canadians smash country's Paralympic medal record https://briefnews.eu/greatness-abounds-as-canadians-smash-countrys-paralympic-medal-record/ https://briefnews.eu/greatness-abounds-as-canadians-smash-countrys-paralympic-medal-record/#respond Sun, 18 Mar 2018 12:32:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/greatness-abounds-as-canadians-smash-countrys-paralympic-medal-record/

The goal set out by the Canadian Paralympic Committee coming into Pyeongchang, South Korea, was capturing 16 medals based on their calculations of how athletes should perform.

Their slogan coming into all of this was “Greatness is Rare”.

For 10 days in South Korea, Canada’s 55 athletes, the largest winter delegation ever, proved greatness was abundant.

Team Canada captured 28 medals, second-most at the Games, smashing the country’s previous record of 19 at the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver.

There were moments of elation and moments of devastation. There were surprise performances and expected dominant performances.

There was the historic display by Prince Edward Island’s Mark Arendz, who won a medal in every event he competed in. His gold, two silver and three bronze made him the first Canadian to win six medals at a single Winter Games.

‘See what is possible’

For his effort, Arendz led Canada into the closing ceremony, waving the flag proudly and grinning ear-to-ear. But for as much as this was about getting the medals for himself and his country, Arendz wanted it to be more than that.

“I want anyone in Canada to look at what we did here and see what is possible,” he said. “I hope I can be an inspiration for others to realize you can achieve anything.”

There was standout performance by 18-year-old Mollie Jepsen from West Vancouver. In her first Games, Jepsen skied her way to four medals for Canada. She was also responsible for claiming the country’s first medal of the Paralympics.

“I’m really proud to represent Canada,” she said. “To have been able to get the first medal is amazing.”

Opening ceremony flag-bearer, Brian McKeever, became the most decorated Paralympic cross-country skier ever by winning three gold and a bronze. He now has 13 gold medals and 17 total in his career.

The 38-year-old from Canmore, Alta., raced to a rare “triple treble” — sweeping all three individual men’s cross-country events for the third consecutive Winter Paralympics.

“It’s always an honour to represent Canada, and to do that at the Paralympics is why I have kept going with my career,” McKeever said.

Canada’s Para Nordic team skied to 16 medals at the Paralympics.

Heartbreak in hockey but a silver lining

There was heartbreak too for Canada.

The para ice hockey team appeared to have gold in their hands when victory was ripped away.

With less than a minute left in the game and the U.S. net empty, Canada’s Rob Armstrong hit the post. It would have given Canada a 2-0 lead and sealed the win. Instead, the Americans picked up the puck, stormed down the ice and scored with 37 seconds left.

Declan Farmer, who scored the tying goal, would also score the golden goal for the Americans in overtime. It sent the United States into a frenzied celebration and the Canadians into stunned disappointment.

But after the game veteran Billy Bridges, who was competing in his fifth Paralympics, wanted to talk about how bright the future is for the program.

“There is so more that went on here. We showcased the sport. It’s unbelievable what these guys can do,” he said.

It’s a perspective Bridges admits he wouldn’t be able to have had all those years ago when he first started playing. But all these years later he can appreciate what this team did together and wants it to motivate Canadians.

“I really hope we can take what we did here today and know we’ve inspired people to get into the game. We just tried to do the best we could.”

The Comeback Kids inspire

Then there was the Canadian wheelchair curlers, who earned the nickname “The Comeback Kids” after their impressive ability to stage remarkable rallies to win games at the Paralympics.

They never quit when falling behind and found ways to victory, mostly by stealing points from their opposition.

Even after Marie Wright, Dennis Thiessen, Ina Forrest and Mark Ideson lost the semifinal game to China and had their gold medal dreams dashed, they remained positive. They rallied together, came back and won the bronze a day later against Korea.

“We picked each other up. I’m so proud of us all,” Ideson said.

Triumph over seemingly impossible odds

Many will never forget the inspirational story of Marie Wright from Moose Jaw, Sask. The 57-year-old made her first Paralympic appearance against seemingly impossible odds.

It was a long an difficult journey getting to this point.

In August 1988, Wright was in a horrific accident on a rural road in Saskatchewan. It left her a paraplegic. Her two youngest daughters as well as her niece and nephew were also in the vehicle. Her youngest daughter was just one at the time and suffered a serious head injury.

To make matters worse, two years after the accident Wright’s husband left her — as the single mother of four daughters was adjusting to life in a wheelchair.

But she never gave up and is now a Paralympic medallist. Her two oldest daughters, Kyla and Tara, were in the crowd cheering her on throughout the competition.

She was thinking about all four of her daughters after she won bronze.

“I’m so proud of them. They’re my heroes. They make my life worthwhile. I’m so glad they could be here to share this all with me.”

Wright calls these Games and her bronze medal moment one of the best times of her life.

“I’ve never been on a podium before,” she said, smiling. “Until now.”

Paralympic wake-up: Day 8 news you might have missed from the Games https://briefnews.eu/paralympic-wake-up-day-8-news-you-might-have-missed-from-the-games/ https://briefnews.eu/paralympic-wake-up-day-8-news-you-might-have-missed-from-the-games/#respond Sat, 17 Mar 2018 10:40:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/paralympic-wake-up-day-8-news-you-might-have-missed-from-the-games/

Canadian Paralympians set a new national single-Games record of 24 medals on the strength of a five-medal day which included a pair of cross-country golds and a curling bronze. The previous record of 19 was set at Vancouver 2010.

Here’s a quick recap of all the important Paralympic news you might have missed overnight from Pyeongchang, South Korea, and what’s to come later today.

Cross-country excellence

Brian McKeever was on to something when he said Canada has “superpower” potential in cross-country. The 38-year-old from Canmore, Alta., won gold in the men’s 10-kilometre visually impaired event to complete a rare “triple treble” — sweeping all three individual men’s cross-country events for the third consecutive Winter Paralympics.

McKeever’s gold in the 10km visually impaired classic gave Canada 20 total medals in Pyeongchang, surpassing the previous record of 19 medals, which was set in Vancouver in 2010.1:46

McKeever’s victory with guide Graham Nishikawa established a new national Paralympic medal record for Canada, but he wasn’t the only Canadian to claim cross-country gold on Day 8 of the Games.

Natalie Wilkie, the youngest member of Canada’s Paralympic contingent, took top spot in the women’s 7.5 km standing event to earn her first-career gold. The 17-year-old from Salmon Arm, B.C., won her first medal earlier in the week with a bronze performance in the sprint event.

Wilkie finished atop the podium in the women’s standing 7.5km classic, to claim her first Paralympic gold medal, adding to the bronze she won in the 1.5km sprint.0:56

Mark Arendz earned his fifth medal in as many events with a bronze in the men’s 10 km standing race, while Emily Young captured bronze in the women’s standing event for her first-career Paralympic medal.

Canada wins emotional curling bronze

The Canadian wheelchair curling rink successfully regrouped to win bronze against host South Korea following a contentious semifinal loss to eventual champion China. But it was the scene after the game — teary-eyed team members celebrating with an ecstatic group of family and friends — that may be the most memorable part.

“We’re just all a family,” lead Marie Wright said. “Our families became a family and on the ice we were just like a family. It’s going to be hard to go back home.”

Ideson spoke with CBC’s Lauren Woolstencroft after his Canadian rink won a bronze medal in wheelchair curling.2:10

Marcoux shy of slalom podium

Canadian para alpine skier Mac Marcoux had a strong second run in the men’s slalom visually impaired event, but finished in fourth place in a competitive field.

Marcoux and guide Jack Leitch won downhill gold and giant slalom bronze earlier at these Games.

What’s coming up on Saturday?

Canadian athletes have several medal opportunities on the final day of competition.

Alpine skiing

Mollie Jepsen and Alana Ramsay look to add to their medal hauls in the women’s slalom. All classes begin competing with the first run at 8:30 p.m. ET, followed by the second at 11:30 p.m. ET.

Cross-country skiing

Canada is fielding two star-studded relay teams to close out the para nordic events in Pyeongchang. Natalie Wilkie, Emily Young, Chris Klebl and Mark Arendz will compete in the 4×2.5 km mixed relay at 9 p.m. ET, while Collin Cameron and Brian McKeever will ski in the 4×2.5 km open relay at 10 p.m. ET.

Hockey

Canada and the United States compete for para ice hockey gold at 11 p.m. ET. The Canadians are looking to win their first Paralympic title since 2006, while the Americans can earn their third-consecutive crown with a win.

Para Ice Hockey has come a long way since its debut at the Paralympics in 1994, including a name change. Rob Pizzo takes you inside this fast and exciting sport that is growing in popularity every day.2:02

Canadian Paralympic roundup: Collin Cameron races to biathlon bronze https://briefnews.eu/canadian-paralympic-roundup-collin-cameron-races-to-biathlon-bronze/ https://briefnews.eu/canadian-paralympic-roundup-collin-cameron-races-to-biathlon-bronze/#respond Fri, 16 Mar 2018 04:49:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canadian-paralympic-roundup-collin-cameron-races-to-biathlon-bronze/

Canada’s Collin Cameron added to his Paralympic biathlon medal total with a bronze in the men’s 15-kilometre sitting race on Friday in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

The 29-year-old of Sudbury, Ont., crossed the line in a time of 50 minutes 59.1 seconds while incurring only a single shooting penalty to finish just behind Germany’s Martin Fleig and American Daniel Cnossen.

Cameron sped to a bronze medal in the men’s 15km sitting biathlon event, matching the bronze he captured in the 7.5km race.0:24

Cameron claimed his first-ever Paralympic medal on the opening day of competition, racing to bronze in the 7.5 km event.

He also had fourth and fifth-place results in cross-country.

In the women’s 12.5 km standing race, Brittany Hudak of Prince Albert, Sask., earned another bronze for Canada with a time of 41:20.7.

It was the 24-year-old’s first Paralympic medal, having finished fifth and eighth in two earlier races.

Emily Young of Kelowna, B.C., finished seventh.

Ina Forrest closing in on 3rd straight Paralympic curling gold https://briefnews.eu/ina-forrest-closing-in-on-3rd-straight-paralympic-curling-gold/ https://briefnews.eu/ina-forrest-closing-in-on-3rd-straight-paralympic-curling-gold/#respond Thu, 15 Mar 2018 14:54:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ina-forrest-closing-in-on-3rd-straight-paralympic-curling-gold/

Prior to starting wheelchair curling at the age of 42, Ina Forrest had only touched a granite stone two other times in her life.

Now in her third Paralympics, Forrest and the team are once again heading into the medal round. She’s won gold at the past two Paralympics for Canada.

“I could have never imagined this for my life,” Forrest said.

Forrest was extremely active while growing up in Fort St. John, B.C. She loved sports and imagined playing them throughout her entire life.

That all changed when Forrest was 21 years old; she was hit by a drunk driver and was paralyzed. For the next 21 years, Forrest didn’t even consider sports. She had university, kids and a life to focus on.

That all changed during a trip to get groceries.

“I was at Costco and my friend said ‘hey, let’s go try wheelchair curling,'” Forrest said. “That’s how it started.”

Thirteen years later, Forrest is a two-time Paralympic champion, has competed at the last nine world wheelchair curling championships and was inducted into Canadian Curling Hall of Fame in February of 2016.

CBC Sports’ Josh Dueck spoke with Canada’s vice skip Ina Forrest, after the rink qualified for the wheelchair curling semifinals in second place.1:29

Now she’s alongside Marie Wright, Dennis Thiessen, Mark Ideson and alternate James Anseeuw in their bid to win a fourth consecutive gold medal for Canada. The team plays China on Friday at 2:35 a.m. ET in the semifinals, while South Korea takes on Norway in the other matchup.

“Four years ago I kind of went ‘do I want to do it again?’ You have to commit to it if you’re going to do it in my opinion,” Forrest said.

“[The] Paralympics is just such an amazing event. Once you’re here it’s like, yeah, this is what you play for.”

Wright was right

Wright, from Moose Jaw, Sask., is making her first appearance at the Paralympics. The 57-year-old paraplegic single mother of four daughters has caught the attention of fans, players and people across Canada with her bright smile and positive attitude.

She’s basking in this experience.

“It feels so good. I’m so excited,” Wright said.

At the beginning of the event the team made a fun bet about what their record in the round robin would be.

Wright was exactly right.

Mark Ideson’s Canadian rink beat Finland 8-4, to finish the wheelchair curling round robin in second place at 9-2. They next play China in the semifinals.0:48

“Before we left home we all made a bet on how we were going to finish in the standings and everyone said 7-4 and I said 9-2 and I’m so excited,” she said, adding that it was the optimist in her that picked that record.

Wright likes to think the key to her success is keeping things light during the games and enjoying the moment.

“I just love the game. As long as you’re hanging fun, you feel the ice and it helps your game,” she said.

Skip Ideson learning fast

Ideson is really starting to find his groove at the Games.

His shot in the fifth end against the United States, a through-the-port jaw-dropping takeout, is still being talked about. Ever since that game, Ideson has been getting better and better. And his confident is building.

In what might be the shot of the Paralympics, Canadian skip Mark Ideson just barely snuck his rock past a guard to make the takeout. It led to a steal that evened their match against the USA.1:07

“We’re 11 games in now and we have the feel for the ice,” he said. “The only thing I can’t seem to get down is that first end and off to a quick start. I have to polish that up for the next game.”

He only started playing wheelchair curling eight years ago. Four years after he threw his first rock from a wheelchair, Ideson won gold as lead with Canada’s team at the 2014 Sochi Paralympics.

Now he’s the skip and is working hard at perfecting his game.

“I’m still learning out there. Every end. I don’t know if you can play this game long enough to know everything,” he said.

Ideson is patient; he waits for other teams to make mistakes and then capitalizes. The team has had four comeback wins throughout the tournament. “The Comeback Kids” has become the rink’s nickname.

“That’s the character of this team. We just have to stay patient,” Ideson said.

His family is in the crowd watching and cheering all of the shots and he knows there are a lot more back home supporting the team.

“We hear Canada loud and clear cheering for us. We love the support,” Ideson said. “We still just have to take it one rock at a time now.”

Canada’s para ice hockey team secured a spot in a Paralympic gold-medal game for the first time in 12 years, while the Canadian curling rink booked a date with China in Friday’s semifinals.

Here’s a quick recap of all the important Paralympic news you might have missed overnight and what’s to come later today.

Chasing that golden feeling again

The Canadians are back in a Paralympic ice hockey final for the first time in 12 years following a 7-0 win over South Korea. Only three members of Canada’s current roster were on the team that won gold at the 2006 Games in Torino, and they’re excited to get another shot at winning it all.

Canada bounced South Korea 7-0 in the para ice hockey semifinals and move on to their first final since winning gold at the 2006 Paralympics in Turin.0:45

Canada will face the expected gold-medal clash against the U.S., thumped Italy 10-1 in its semifinal match. The Americans are also two-time defending Paralympic champions. The nations are set to play in the gold-medal game on Saturday at 11 p.m. ET.

Canada draws China in curling semis

The quest for a wheelchair curling four-peat at the Paralympics continues for Canada, with the rink set to face China in the semifinals on Friday at 2:35 a.m. ET. In the team’s round-robin game earlier in Pyeongchang, the Canadians rallied from a 5-1 deficit to beat China 8-5.

Canada, true to form, rallied in their final round-robin game to finish with a 9-2 record. Top-seed South Korea will play Norway in the other semifinal matchup.

Mark Ideson’s Canadian rink beat Finland 8-4, to finish the wheelchair curling round robin in second place at 9-2. They next play China in the semifinals.0:48

What’s coming up on Thursday?

In addition to Canada’s semifinal curling draw early Friday morning, here’s a look at today’s events featuring Canadian competitors.

Biathlon

Mark Arendz has one more shot at winning an elusive biathlon gold in Pyeongchang. Arendz — who owns biathlon silver and bronze as well as cross-country bronze from these Games — competes in the men’s 15-kilometre event tonight. The women’s 12.5 km also takes place this evening.

The sitting events (featuring Canadian bronze medallist Collin Cameron) get underway at 9:00 p.m. ET, followed by the standing and visual impairment events at 11:00 p.m. ET.

Snowboard banked slalom

Canada’s snowboarders are back on the hill for the Paralympic debut of banked slalom. The men’s and women’s events begin at 9:30 p.m. ET and you can learn about the new event here.

The seven Canadian competitors were shut out of the snowboard cross podium earlier at the Games; Michelle Salt was the top Canadian, finishing fourth in the women’s LL1 event.

Calgary’s Michelle Salt was the top Canadian para snowboarder, finishing fourth in the women’s LL1 event after losing to French bronze-medallist Cecile Hernandez in the small final.2:05

Canada kept the pressure on from there, adding a steal in the fourth end before putting the game away with another two in the closing ends and only allowing Germany one in the fifth.

Canada improved to 8-2 and will close out round-robin action against Finland at 2:35 a.m. ET.
