Blind Indonesian judoka disqualified from Asian Para Games after refusing to take off hijab https://briefnews.eu/blind-indonesian-judoka-disqualified-from-asian-para-games-after-refusing-to-take-off-hijab/ https://briefnews.eu/blind-indonesian-judoka-disqualified-from-asian-para-games-after-refusing-to-take-off-hijab/#respond Tue, 09 Oct 2018 16:25:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/blind-indonesian-judoka-disqualified-from-asian-para-games-after-refusing-to-take-off-hijab/

Indonesian judoka Miftahul Jannah was banned from competing in the women’s 52kg visual impairment category at the Asian Para Games after the athlete refused to remove her hijab.

The 21-year-old Muslim was disqualified from the competition for breaching the International Judo Federation (IJF) rules, which state that a judoka’s head “may not be covered except for bandaging of a medical nature.”

The athlete left the tatami in tears, triggering a public uproar over the incident which was deemed discriminative by many fans.

Words of support poured in on social media with many users expressing their admiration towards the athlete – who refused to take off her head cover.

The president of the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee (NPC), Senny Marbun, blamed negligence for the controversy, adding that the team coach was unaware of the rule because his English was poor.

“On behalf of the NPC I apologize for this. This is really embarrassing, and I hope it will not occur again in the future,” Senny said during a press conference on Monday.

The incident, which was widely covered by the Indonesian media, attracted the attention of the country’s House of Representatives (DPR), whose members rewarded Miftahul with an Umrah trip to Mecca.

“I sincerely appreciate it and would like to say thank you to whomever rewarded me an Umrah ticket. I am truly elated. It personally feels like a gold medal for me since I failed to participate in yesterday’s match,” the athlete said on Tuesday.

Rainbow Six Siege Para Bellum release time, new operators update, and patch notes https://briefnews.eu/rainbow-six-siege-para-bellum-release-time-new-operators-update-and-patch-notes/ https://briefnews.eu/rainbow-six-siege-para-bellum-release-time-new-operators-update-and-patch-notes/#respond Thu, 07 Jun 2018 07:14:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rainbow-six-siege-para-bellum-release-time-new-operators-update-and-patch-notes/

Ubisoft have released the official patch notes for the next Rainbow Six Siege expansion, which is set to arrive later today.

Landing at slightly different intervals on all platforms, the development team have opted for a gradual rollout, rather then doing things all at once.

PC players will see the first launch, followed by PS4, and then lastly the Xbox One.

Each platform will see a one hour downtime period, with the new expansion launching with an hour gap between each platform.

The R6 release times are as follows:

  • PC: 9:00am EDT / 14:00 BST
  • PS4: 10:00am EDT / 15:00 BST
  • XB1: 11:00am EDT / 16:00 BST

As announced earlier this year by Ubisoft, Rainbow Six Siege Para Bellum adds two new Operators, as well as a new map and other features.

Codenamed Alibi and Maestro, both operators bring unique sets of skills to the tasks of defending, more on their loadouts can be found below:

New operator, Alibi, is an undercover infiltration specialist in the Italian Gruppo di Intervento Speciale (G.I.S.) unit. She is a cunning adversary with a gift for infiltrating dense networks of organised crime. Alibi is notable for her deployable Hologram, a mechanism that makes it difficult for enemies to positively identify her from her incredibly realistic projections.

The Prisma projects holograms are identical to Alibi in an idle position and when they are shot or touched, the player will be marked and pinged for the next few seconds.

If Prisma is deployed outside, a false “Defender Outside” warning is triggered for Attackers.

New Operator, Maestro, is another member of the Italian, Gruppo di Intervento Speciale (G.I.S.) and participated in joint operations in Iraq, earning a facial scar from a roadside IED. Maestro is notable for his remote access turret, which is also bulletproof, capable of seeing through smoke, and able to fire low powered-laser beams.

Firing high-energy laser beams makes it a pretty formidable gadget, and once affixed to the floor or wall, Maestro can remote-surveil and provide overwatch in a location through the swivel-mounted camera.

When the camera device breaks open to fire a laser beam the core is exposed to damage. Otherwise, the turret is unaffected by bullets and melee. Lastly, Evil Eye can see through smoke.

As mentioned above, the new R6 update being launched today also comes with a new standout feature included; Pick & Ban.

The Pick & Ban system feature provides an extra layer of strategy between teams, as each side tries to counter their opponents’ picks during the banning phase.

However, it should also be noted that teams can swap Operators for the unexpected 6th Pick.

Patch notes have also been released by Ubisoft, and include other changes being worked on by the team.

You can find some of the more notable changes below:

GRENADE THROWBACK

We have removed the ability to throw grenades back at enemies. This feature did not perform as we had intended, and was prone to collateral damage as a result. As such, we looked at the data and saw an unnaturally high occurrence of team kills and suicides that resulted from throwing grenades back.

GLAZ OTS-03 RATE OF FIRE

  • The rate of fire for Glaz’s rifle was increased from 220 RPM to 235.
  • He was slightly buffed to account for other changes that are coming in Operation Para Bellum.

CLAYMORE PLACEMENT EASE OF USE

  • Claymores can be placed closer to walls and objects in the environment.
  • Claymores are now less picky about the slope of the ground it is being placed on.
  • Pickup is slightly easier to do from different heights.
  • You can no longer deploy claymores inside of barricades.

Rainbow Six Siege operators: New leak hints at post Para Bellum plans https://briefnews.eu/rainbow-six-siege-operators-new-leak-hints-at-post-para-bellum-plans/ https://briefnews.eu/rainbow-six-siege-operators-new-leak-hints-at-post-para-bellum-plans/#respond Tue, 29 May 2018 02:39:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rainbow-six-siege-operators-new-leak-hints-at-post-para-bellum-plans/

It looks like the new Rainbow Six Siege Para Bellum content will be followed by new operators which could add to the offensive mix.

According to dataminers, evidence has been found that suggests that a new breacher is in the works.

With the barest details currently available, it looks like a new character is being worked that will be equipped with a blowtorch.

This would suggest that Ubisoft are planning to release a new hard breacher, following the release of Para Bellum in June.

This lines up with what R6’s marketing director Alex Remy revealed during the recent Season 7 pro league finals in Atlantic City.

Remy confirmed that the team were working on a new operator with breaching skills, although he didn’t confirm if this character would be able to cut through reinforced walls or not.

The latest datamining efforts suggests that they will have this ability, however, it should also be noted that this could change in the future.

As Ubisoft themselves have not confirmed this information officially yet, it should be be treated as just a report at this time.

It would make sense to add a new hard breacher, what with the new pick & ban system coming into effect very soon.

Being able to remove both the current hard breachers out of play means that a third would keep the option available.

The datamine also found evidence of new loot boxes coming to the game in the near future, although it’s unclear what they will contain.

Fans won’t have to wait long until the new Rainbow Six Siege Year 3 Season 2 content goes live.

Currently available for testing on PC, the new Para Bellum expansion includes a new map, the pick & ban system, and two operators.

The Pick & Ban system feature provides an extra layer of strategy between teams, as each side tries to counter their opponents’ picks during the banning phase. Players can even anticipate a thrilling twist at the last moment, when teams swap Operators for the unexpected 6th Pick.

Para swimmers deliver more gold https://briefnews.eu/para-swimmers-deliver-more-gold/ https://briefnews.eu/para-swimmers-deliver-more-gold/#respond Sun, 08 Apr 2018 11:52:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/para-swimmers-deliver-more-gold/ AUSTRALIA’S gold rush in the pool has continued thanks to para swimmers Jesse Aungles and Lakeisha Patterson winning events after Australia’s sprinters failed to fire in the blue riband sprint.

Aungles won the SM8 200m medley final in 2:30.77, holding off fast-finishing teammate Blake Cochrane as the Aussies claimed the medley quinella.

Patterson, who stepped up from the S8 classification to compete in the S9 100m freestyle, sliced almost a second from her best to overhaul pre-race favourite Ellie Cole and Englishwoman Alice Tai to win and win in a world record time of 1:03.02.

“I’ve got no words, I’m so excited,” Patterson said.

“It was definitely a challenge swimming up a classification.

“I spoke to my coach beforehand and he said: ‘At the end of the day, it is another swimming race. Don’t worry about anyone else and focus on yourself.’ “That is what I tried to do with these amazing girls next to me.

“I cannot thank my coach (Harley Connelly) highly enough and all of my family and friends that came to support me.

“It’s the first time my family have been able to watch me race at a major international competition.

“Hopefully I did them and Australia proud.”

Cole held the lead at the turn but Patterson stormed home to win gold, with Cole hanging on for bronze as both set new personal best times.

“It’s not often Australians get to see Paralympic sport, I think it is eye-opening for a lot of the Australian public,” Cole said.

“Hopefully some young kids with disabilities will see this and get in and give something a crack.”

Heartbreaking OT loss for Canada's para ice hockey team has a silver lining https://briefnews.eu/heartbreaking-ot-loss-for-canadas-para-ice-hockey-team-has-a-silver-lining/ https://briefnews.eu/heartbreaking-ot-loss-for-canadas-para-ice-hockey-team-has-a-silver-lining/#respond Sun, 18 Mar 2018 14:31:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heartbreaking-ot-loss-for-canadas-para-ice-hockey-team-has-a-silver-lining/

It was as if the Canadian para ice hockey players were frozen in time, suspended in the disbelief of it all. Some just stayed beside goalie Dominic Larocque, while most were on the bench with their heads hanging.

United States forward Declan Farmer’s second goal of the game, the golden goal in overtime, sent the Americans shooting out of their bench and into a frenzied celebration.

The Canadian players could barely watch as a massive American flag was brought out onto the ice by the players — the party just kept going. The Canadians still didn’t move.

Declan Farmer scored in overtime to give the U.S a 2-1 win over Canada, handing the United States their 3rd straight para ice hockey gold.1:45

The sting of the moment must have been even more painful considering Canada had a 1-0 lead with less than a minute left in the game.

With the American net empty and the team pushing for an equalizer, Canada’s Rob Armstrong skated down the right wing into the U.S. zone and fired a shot at the gaping net — and the puck rang agonizingly off the post.

Seconds later, the U.S. picked up the puck, raced down the ice and Farmer tied the game with 37 seconds remaining in regulation.

“That’s sport, eh?” head coach Ken Babey said after the game. “It was one of those plays where you shoot in it, the game is over. You hit the post, they come back the other way and score. It’s typical in hockey. It’s a hockey play that happened. Nobody to blame.”

The Canadians finally came together and gathered beside each other on the ice, many still unable to look at one another. The American anthem played and their flag was raised — a third-straight Paralympic gold medal for the United States.

This was the first gold medal game Canada was in since 2006, back when current captain Greg Westlake was a teenager making his first appearance at the Games. He knows the thrill of victory — and today the bitter taste of defeat.

“I’ve been at this for a long time,” he said. “I’ve been at the top of the mountain and at the very bottom where the walls are caving in and you don’t know why certain things are happening. There are answers out there that are beyond your control. That’s high performance sport and that’s life.”

When the team finally got to the dressing room, they rallied around one another.

“Every guy hugged each other. We were crying. It had nothing to do with losing a gold medal but the sadness of knowing this team won’t be together again,” Westlake said. “You never keep the same team. I love that group of guys and I’m so proud of them.”

Holding their heads high

Billy Bridges, in his fifth Paralympics, scored Canada’s only goal of the game. He, like Westlake, has been through so many battles on the ice for Canada and reflected on them after the game.

“I remember doing this interview in 2002 after we lost the bronze medal and being so clouded and wondering why we couldn’t get it done,” Bridges said. “I really feel clarity today that we have the best team in the world. Those guys need to hold their heads high for the next four years.”

That’s what Bridges wanted to focus on after the loss; he’s hopeful for the Canadian para ice hockey program and the sport.

“There is so much more that went on today. We showcased the sport. It’s unbelievable what these guys can do,” he said.

It’s a perspective Bridges admits he wouldn’t be able to have had when he first started playing. But all these years later, he can appreciate what this team did together and wants it to motivate Canadians.

“I really hope we can take what we did here today and know we’ve inspired people to get into the game. We just tried to do the best we could.”

‘This is just the start’

For the last four years, this group of Canadian para ice hockey players poured their hearts into the program, says Westlake.

“Those guys should be so proud of the way they played and the life lessons they learned to commit to this and work at this every single day.”

It’s a sentiment shared by the coach.

“I’m really proud of how are guys have taken themselves to a new level on and off the ice. They were first-class guys to work with every day. I challenged them every day and they responded,” Babey said.

Bridges, who has watched teammates come and go over his 18 years with the team, shared a message with first-timers after the game.

“We have so many new teammates. This was their first Games. They’re such incredible athletes. I reminded them of that. This is just the start,” he said.

Canadian para ice hockey veterans want that golden feeling again https://briefnews.eu/canadian-para-ice-hockey-veterans-want-that-golden-feeling-again/ https://briefnews.eu/canadian-para-ice-hockey-veterans-want-that-golden-feeling-again/#respond Thu, 15 Mar 2018 17:53:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canadian-para-ice-hockey-veterans-want-that-golden-feeling-again/

There was a time when para ice hockey players like Billy Bridges, Brad Bowden and Greg Westlake thought winning gold at the Paralympics was going to come easy. After all, the three of them won gold with Canada early in their careers at the 2006 Winter Games in Torino.

It was supposed to propel them forward into a home Paralympics. The thrill of defending gold in 2010 in Vancouver danced around in their heads.

Their dream scenario turned out to be a nightmare.

“That was the worst loss of my career. It was horrible,” Bowden said about the semifinal loss to Japan.

Never before had they lost to Japan until that game — in front of all of their friends and family to make it worse.

“It was such a beautiful moment being on home soil with my family there. Canada was behind us. The medal dream was beautiful.

“It was such a great time but I try to forget about it.”

Bridges and Westlake have similar stories. Four years years later in Sochi, the team fell short of their golden dream again and finished with a bronze.

They’ve spent 12 years trying to get back to glory and now they finally have their chance. The three veterans alongside the rest of Team Canada defeated South Korea 7-0 on Thursday afternoon in Pyeongchang, securing a spot in that elusive gold medal game.

Canada bounced South Korea 7-0 in the para ice hockey semifinals and move on to their first final since winning gold at the 2006 Paralympics in Turin.0:45

“We’re just so happy that we’re following the script the way it was supposed to go,” Bridges said after the win. “The Paralympics are such a special thing. But the pressure of it all can change the complexion of everything.”

Bridges finished the semifinal with two goals and an assist at his fifth Paralympics. He says there’s something magical happening with this team.

“Every line can get it done. Every player can get it done. Everyone is being a leader. It’s so awesome to see.”

Remembering what it’s like

Bridges likes to share a story about how he was feeling before his first gold medal game in 2006. He was nervous, “scared” of the game as he describes it.

“I was on the phone with my dad before the gold medal game against Norway. We had lost to them in the prelims and I just couldn’t wrap my head around it and beating them,” he said.

That’s when the voice at the other end chimed in and said words Bridges will never forget and will carry with him into this gold medal game.

“My dad didn’t say much, he just said ‘you know Bill, you won the semifinal game and for the rest of your life you’re going to be a Paralympic medallist for Canada and no one can ever take that away from you.'”

It was as if in that moment all the weight of the world was lifted off of Bridges’ shoulders. The team went out and captured gold. Bridges wants to experience those feelings again.

“We’ve planned for this game for eight years against the USA. We’ve wanted this chance to play them in the gold medal game.”

Inspired by other Paralympians

Westlake, the team’s current captain, started his career by winning that gold medal in 2006. Now he’s leading the team back into the gold medal game all these years later.

“You get older and you realize how few and far between the opportunities are. Just being in the gold medal and having the chance to compete in it is awesome,” Westlake said.

But make no mistake, while Westlake is just happy to be back, he wants to win badly and the competitive juices are already flowing in advance of Sunday’s final.

“I want to be nervous. I want to be so nervous I’m going to feel like I’ll throw up and then I’ll go out there and give a performance.”

Canadian para hockey player Greg Westlake has had a long and decorated career on the rink, but there is plenty more to know about him. Here are 5 things that you should know.1:50

Westlake has a different perspective about all of this now. For the first time since he started competing at the Games, all of the Paralympian are all in one Village. Spending time with the other competitors and hearing their stories of perseverance is firing Westlake up.

“Right now I’m very inspired. I’m inspired by our curling team. I’m inspired by other Paralympians.”

It’s been a long road back but they’ve arrived at their golden destination. Westlake says they couldn’t have done it without the backing of family and friends throughout the years.

“The best thank you we can give people who supported us is to go leave it all out there.”

Canada advances to gold-medal game in para ice hockey https://briefnews.eu/canada-advances-to-gold-medal-game-in-para-ice-hockey/ https://briefnews.eu/canada-advances-to-gold-medal-game-in-para-ice-hockey/#respond Thu, 15 Mar 2018 04:57:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canada-advances-to-gold-medal-game-in-para-ice-hockey/

Canada’s para ice hockey team advanced to the gold-medal game at the 2018 Winter Paralympics with a convincing 7-0 win over host South Korea.

The team hasn’t won Paralympic gold since the 2006 Games in Torino. Tyler McGregor and Billy Bridges both scored twice, with Liam Hickey, Dom Cozzolino and captain Greg Westlake rounding out the scoresheet.

Canada will face the winner of the United States-Italy semifinal, which gets underway on Thursday at 7 a.m. ET; the Americans are the two-time defending Paralympic champions.

The gold-medal game will take place Saturday at 11 p.m. ET.

The win also extends Canada’s shutout streak at these Paralympics to four games; during that stretch, the Canadians oustcored their opponents 42-0. Corbin Watson got the start in net against South Korea, with Dominic Larocque relieving him in to start the third period.

Westlake, Bridges and Brad Bowden are the only remaining players from the gold-winning squad from 2006. Current chef de mission Todd Nicholson captained that team.

There's nothing easy about what para snowboarder Alex Massie does https://briefnews.eu/theres-nothing-easy-about-what-para-snowboarder-alex-massie-does/ https://briefnews.eu/theres-nothing-easy-about-what-para-snowboarder-alex-massie-does/#respond Mon, 12 Mar 2018 00:21:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/theres-nothing-easy-about-what-para-snowboarder-alex-massie-does/

Even on Alex Massie’s hulking hand, his shimmering ring sticks out.

“It’s my family crest. The motto at the bottom is fac et spera, and it means do and hope,” he explains.

It’s how Massie approaches life.

“My dad once told me when I was a little kid, it’s easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission. So, go out there, try it and hope it works out,” Massie says, cracking a large smile.

It’s a smile the 22-year-old para snowboarder had on his face for the entire 30-minute interview.

The Barrie, Ont., native has reason to be happy. Since joining the national team in 2014, Massie has consistently finished in the top 10, highlighted with numerous World Cup podiums.

Massie says a lot of people do a double take when they find out he is a snowboarder.

At 6-foot-3, 265 pounds, the burly Massie does not look the part. But he uses it to his advantage.

“I’m not the same size as most guys, I’m a lot bigger so I ride knowing that I’m bigger, and that I don’t get pushed around out there and so it allows me to go into a corner [strong],” Massie explains.

“I try to race smart and not do risky things that are going to endanger anyone but you know, if you’re in a corner and there’s a guy beside me and we touch, I know that I’m probably going to ride away and he won’t.”

Alex “Bubz” Massie has a pretty cool Instagram feed, with lots of shots of him at big-time para snowboarding events in countries around the world. But, like most people, his story goes way deeper than that. Here, he lets CBC Sports into his gym, his truck and his home, to share a frank look at what his life is like.5:41

Improbable journey

His improbable journey to the pinnacle of his sport is driven by a positive attitude and an unbending sense of optimism.

The journey to Pyeongchang began when Massie was 16. He suffered a major injury in 2011 while wake boarding and doctors told him and his family it was likely he would lose his leg

“I thought my life was over to be honest,” he recalls.

Massie was transported to a Toronto hospital where staff worked feverishly to save his leg but it wasn’t possible.

“They came in, it was a Friday, she said, ‘I’ve got bad news, you’re going to lose your foot,'” Massie recalls

“She did this pinch test and I was watching her, she was pinching on my heel and mentally I was like, I want to feel this and I was trying to make myself believe that I could feel it but I couldn’t and that was when they knew it had to go.”

After being released, Massie suffered a number of initial setbacks including a number of infections and a serious blood clot that sent him back to the hospital.

But by the summer of 2012, Massie was beginning to regain some mobility.

“I was back up at my cottage and went wake surfing and right away and I just kind of knew, you know nothing’s going to hold me back.”

Massie quickly became comfortable with his prosthetic leg which allowed him to reconnect to the sports he’d been passionate about before his accident including football and snowboarding.

By the fall of 2013, Massie was able to make the Barrie North Collegiate Sr. Wildcats as a starter on the team’s offensive line.

And then there was snowboarding. It was a sport he’s done since he was four years old, when he got his first board for Christmas.

“I was like well, I’m going to go to the Paralympics and that fall, they were making a big push to try to make snowboarding into the Paralympics and I was like well, that’s what I’ll do,” Massie says.

“I knew I was going to snowboard again. I knew I was going to play football and the opportunity arose and I’m kind of not much of a feel it out guy.”

Massie reflects on the multiple efforts to save his foot, and the moment he knew it couldn’t be saved.1:21

Excelled quickly

Massie excelled quickly in the world of competitive snowboarding.

In 2014, he captured gold at the Alberta Provincials and the Canadian para snowboard championships.

“I showed up, didn’t really know how I’d do and the guys had just come back from racing in Sochi,” Massie recalls with a smile.

He told his mother he felt comfortable riding with Canada’s best and thought he could actually excel.

“The next day I went up and I won by like two-and-a-half seconds and I was like, yup, this is, this is it. We’re not just along for the ride now, we’re going to go and take hold of the wheel and take this thing for a little joy ride.”

In recent years, Massie’s joy ride has taken him around the world, where he has captured World Cup medals and enjoyed X Games success as one of the sport’s best.

Massie wants people to understand there is nothing easy about what he does. Para snowboarders navigate the same course and the same massive jumps as able-body riders do.

“I think more and more people are starting to understand like, ‘these guys are legit.’ They’re full-time athletes, they’re not just out here on Sunday’s like throwing on their snowboard and going for the race,” Massie says.

“You know, like seven days a week I’m an athlete. I don’t have any real job that I have to go to, I wake up and this is my job, this is what I do. I’m serious about it, I’m full time, I want to win.”

Massie will now try and achieve success on the world’s biggest stage in Pyeongchang.

“If I work my hardest and if that means I get sixth, so be it, but if that means I’m atop of the podium, listening to O Canada, watching that flag go up, that would be a dream come true.”
