George Papadopoulos, the former foreign-policy aide to President Donald Trump’s campaign who pleaded guilty in the Russia investigation last year, took to Twitter on Saturday to call for the former FBI director, James Comey, to testify publicly about the FBI’s purported mishandling of the Russia probe.
“If Jim Comey wants to testify in public and tell America who/why in Trump’s advisory board was under FISA; who Joseph Mifsud is; if the FBI had any role in my dealings with Charles Tawil; and explain the UK and Australia’s surveillance role,” he tweeted, “that would be good for the country.”See the rest of the story at Business Insider

George Papadopoulos, a 2016 campaign adviser for President Donald Trump, is seeking immunity before he testifies before the Senate Intelligence Committee, according to multiple reports.
Papadopoulos’ request reportedly came the same day he delivered a 7-hour testimony to the House Judiciary and Oversight committees as part of a probe into previous FBI and Department of Justice investigations that surrounded the 2016 US presidential elections.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

During the first week of 2018, investigators and the president’s allies alike zeroed in on the Department of Justice, with two Republican congressmen calling on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign and former campaign manager for President Donald Trump, Paul Manafort, suing the department, seeking to limit its powers.
Underneath all the drama though, perhaps the most illuminating news was that the impetus for the FBI investigation into Trump’s Russia ties turned out not to be the Trump-Russia dossier, but rather a drunken admission from Trump’s former foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos to an Australian diplomat that Russia had “dirt” on Hillary Clinton.
Here’s everything you need to know about what happened this week:
Mueller is currently spearheading the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, including whether members of Trump’s campaign colluded with Moscow to tilt the election in his favor. He is also looking into whether Trump sought to obstruct justice when he fired FBI Director James Comey in May.

President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, was copied on emails sent to the Trump campaign last year from Sergei Millian, the Belarus-born businessman who has worked with the Trump Organization and was reportedly a key source in the explosive dossier alleging ties between Trump and Russia.
Senate Judiciary Committee leaders said on Thursday that Trump campaign officials had handed over “communications with Sergei Millian, copied to Mr. Kushner,” that Kushner had apparently failed to disclose voluntarily. Kushner also received an email that discussed a “Russian backdoor overture and dinner invite” from Alexander Torshin, the deputy head of Russia’s central bank, according to NBC.
It is still unclear who was communicating with Millian, but a Washington Post profile from March could offer a clue: Millian told associates last year that he was in regular touch with George Papadopoulos — a campaign foreign policy adviser who pleaded guilty late last month to making false statements to the FBI about the extent and nature of his contacts with Kremlin-linked foreign nationals.
Papadopoulos tried to connect another Trump aide, Boris Epshtyn, with Millian in September 2016, according to the Post. Epshtyn said the meeting never happened.
Millian, who is now a US citizen, founded the Russian-American Chamber of Commerce in 2006 and has described himself as an exclusive broker for the Trump Organization with respect to the company’s potential real-estate dealings in Russia. He attended several black-tie events at Trump’s inauguration, and told the Russian news agency RIA that he had been in touch with the Trump Organization as late as April 2016.

It was around that time that Millian’s organization, the Russian-American Chamber of Commerce, was looking for “delegates” to attend the Russian Oil & Gas Forum in Moscow.
But Millian appears to have begun downplaying his ties to the Trump Organization after Western reporters started digging into Trump’s Russia ties last summer.
Contrary to what he told RIA, Millian told Business Insider in an email earlier this year that the last time he worked on a Trump-brand project was “in Florida around 2008.” He did not respond to a request to clarify the discrepancy.
Millian is also believed to be a key source in a collection of unverified memos known as the Steele dossier — named after its author, former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele. The memos outline Trump and his campaign members’ ties to Russian officials and allege Moscow and the Trump campaign worked hand in hand at points to influence the US election.
ABC reported in January that “while the published [Trump-Russia] dossier never names Millian, a version provided to the FBI included Millian’s name as a source.” The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal reported later that Millian was either source “D” or “E” in the dossier, which Millian has denied.
Source D, according to the dossier, had been “present” for Trump’s alleged “perverted conduct in Moscow.”
Millian has worked with Rossotrudnichestvo, a Russian government organization whose “fundamental” goal is to familiarize “young people from different countries” with Russian culture through exchange trips to Moscow. The FBI has investigated whether Rossotrudnichestvo is a front for the Russian government to cultivate “young, up-and-coming Americans as Russian intelligence assets” — a theory Rossotrudnichestvo has strongly denied.
In January, however, Millian told Mother Jones he “never got any business with Rossotrudnichestvo.” He did not respond to requests from Business Insider to clarify that discrepancy.
Source E, meanwhile,” acknowledged that the Russian regime had been behind the recent leak of embarrassing e-mail messages, emanating from the Democratic National Committee (DNC), to the WikiLeaks platform,” according to the dossier.
Source E also claimed that the Trump campaign and Russia had moles in the Democratic Party; that US-based “cyber operators” were coordinating attacks on the DNC and Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta; and that these operators were being paid covertly via Russian “diplomatic staff” in “key” US cities via that Russia’s emigre pension system.
Screenshot/Twitter“I am one of those very few people who have insider knowledge of Kremlin politics who has the ability to understand the Russian mentality and who has been able to successfully integrate in American society,” Millian told ABC in July 2016.
The same source is quoted in the dossier as saying the Trump campaign was “relatively relaxed” about the attention on Trump’s reported ties to Russia “because it deflected media and the Democrats’ attention away from Trump’s business dealings in China.”
Millian has worked as the “vice president of the World Chinese Merchants Union Association” since 2015, according to his LinkedIn page. He wrote last April that he traveled to Beijing to meet with a Chinese official and the Russian ambassador to the Republic of San Marino.
Millian’s relationship with Papadopoulos, moreover — who was told in April 2016 that the Kremlin had “dirt” on Clinton in the form of “thousands of emails” — raises questions about what they discussed during the election and what they relayed to campaign officials.
According to documents filed by special counsel Robert Mueller’s office and unsealed late last month, Papadopoulos met with a “professor” in London “on or about April 26, 2016” who told him that the Russians had obtained “dirt” on Hillary Clinton.
“During this meeting, the Professor told defendant that he had just returned from a trip to Moscow where he had met with high-level Russian government officials,” one document says.
“The professor told defendant that on that trip he (the professor) learned that the Russians had obtained “dirt” on then-candidate Clinton. The professor told defendant Papadopoulos, as Papadopoulos later described to the FBI, that ‘they [the Russians] have dirt on her’; ‘the Russians had emails on Clinton’; ‘they have thousands of emails.'”
The document suggests Papadopoulos had known that Russia was actively trying to undermine Clinton before virtually anyone else, and it matches some of what the dossier’s “source E” — believed to be Millian — told an associate who then relayed it to Christopher Steele.
Still, it remains unclear whether Papadopoulos told anyone on the campaign, or connected to it, about what he had learned. The day after his meeting with the professor, Papadopoulos emailed one of the campaign’s top policy advisers, Stephen Miller, saying he had “some interesting messages coming in from Moscow about a trip when the time is right.”

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told CNN on Sunday that he did not know about the meeting top Trump campaign advisers took with a Russian lawyer last year at Trump Tower to obtain dirt on Hillary Clinton when he said in January that he had seen no evidence of collusion between the campaign and Moscow.
Clapper was also not aware that a foreign policy adviser to the campaign, George Papadopoulos, was told about the Russian “dirt” on Clinton last April and had been trying for months to arrange a meeting between then-candidate Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the former top intelligence official told CNN’s Jake Tapper.
“You said in January 2017 that you knew of no collusion,” Tapper said. “Did you know of those two events?”
“No, I did not,” Clapper replied.
“The statement I made at the time was true,” he continued. “I had no direct evidence of collusion. We had lots of concerns, because we were aware of multiple meetings that were going on.”
Clapper said that, for his part, he was “not directly aware of the content of these meetings.”
“But we were certainly concerned,” he said. “The dashboard warning lights were clearly on about what was going on. To say specifically that we had smoking gun evidence of collusion, no. But, of course, a lot more has come out that raises, I think, circumstantial questions if nothing else.”
Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to making false statements about his contacts with Russia-linked foreign nationals to federal agents on October 5. He now appears to be a cooperating witness in Mueller’s investigation of potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
New details have emerged, meanwhile, about the link between the Kremlin and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, who met with the campaign on June 9 to lobby for the repeal of the Magnitsky Act sanctions.
Trump told reporters on Sunday that Clapper, former CIA Director John Brennan, and former FBI Director James Comey were “political hacks” and reiterated his belief that the Russia investigation was a hoax created by Democrats.

The revelation that a Maltese professor tied to the Russia government offered the campaign dirt on Clinton in the form of “thousands of emails” in April 2016 seems to move up the known timeline of Moscow’s election interference, and indicates that Papadopoulos knew that Russia was actively trying to undermine Clinton before virtually anyone else.
Hackers, believed to be Russian, breached Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta’s email server in March, but those emails were not published by WikiLeaks until October. News that the Democratic National Committee had been breached by Russia-linked hackers in late 2015 did not break until June 14, 2016.
The DNC documents were dumped by WikiLeaks one day before the Democratic National Convention.
The New York Times reported over the weekend that Papadopoulos wrote to Stephen Miller, then a campaign aide, one day before learning about the Russian “dirt” claiming that Trump had an “open invitation” from Putin to visit Russia.
But Papadopoulos kept trying to organize a meeting between the campaign and Russian government officials even after learning from the professor that Russia was trying to compromise Clinton.
He thanked the professor for his “critical help” after the professor told him about the dirt, according to the special counsel’s court filings, saying that it would be “history making” if a Trump-Putin meeting took place. He wrote Miller again that day saying he had “some interesting messages coming in from Moscow about a trip when the time is right.”
In an April email to then campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, Papadopoulos said he had gotten “a lot of calls over the past month” about how “Putin wants to host the Trump team when the time is right,” according to The Washington Post.
On May 4, he told Lewandowski and campaign cochairman Sam Clovis that Ivan Timofeev, a senior official at the Russian International Affairs Council, wanted them to know that Russian officials were open to Trump visiting Moscow.
Clovis replied that “there are legal issues we need to mitigate, meeting with foreign officials as a private citizen.”
But Papadopoulos was not deterred: He sent the same email to Paul Manafort — listed as a “high-ranking campaign official” in the government filing but identified previously in a Washington Post report — on May 21, just after Manafort was named campaign chairman, telling him that “Russia has been eager to meet with Mr. Trump for some time and have been reaching out to me to discuss.”
The special counsel’s filing indicates that Manafort forwarded Papadopoulos’ email to his longtime business associate Rick Gates and wrote: “Let’s discuss. We need someone to communicate that DT is not doing these trips. It should be someone low level in the campaign so as not to send any signal.”

It is unclear whether Papadopoulos had told anyone in the campaign, at this point, about the Russian “dirt” on Hillary Clinton. On June 1, 2016, Papadopoulos again emailed an unidentified “high-ranking campaign official” and asked about Russia, according to the special counsel’s office.
The official referred Papadopoulos to the “campaign supervisor,” who Papadopoulos emailed with the subject line “Re: Messages from Russia.”
“I have the Russian MFA asking me if Mr. Trump is interested in visiting Russia at some point. Wanted to pass this info along to you for you to decide what’s best to do with it and what message I should sent (or to ignore),” he wrote.
On June 3, 2016, music publicist Rob Goldstone emailed Donald Trump Jr. and said, “The Crown prosecutor of Russia … offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father.”
The information, Goldstone said, was “part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump.”
“If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer,” Trump Jr. replied.
Six days later, Trump Jr., Paul Manafort, and Trump’s son-in-law and top campaign adviser Jared Kushner met with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya — identified as a “Russian government attorney” in Goldstone’s emails — on the promise of dirt on Clinton.
The memo Veselnitskaya brought with her to that meeting, which focused largely on undermining the banker-turned human rights activist Bill Browder, contained many of the same talking points as one written by the Russian prosecutor’s office two months earlier. Browder’s reputation has become inextricably linked to the global human-rights campaign he launched in 2009 after tax lawyer Sergei Magnitsky died in a Russian prison.
“The Veselnitskaya memo has exactly the same talking points as the Russian government’s position on the Magnitsky case,” Browder told Business Insider last month.
He added: “That is the strongest indication to date that Veselnitskaya is an agent of the Russian government and not some independent operator as she claims.”

At the end of a wild Monday, three of President Donald Trump’s associates were indicted on criminal charges. Two pleaded not guilty in federal court, and one pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI about his contacts with Russian officials.
They were the first indictments in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 US elections, and whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow.
Here’s a rundown of everything we learned on Monday:

George Papadopoulos, 30, a foreign-policy adviser to Trump’s campaign in early 2016, secretly pleaded guilty October 5 to making false statements to the FBI about the nature and extent of his contacts with foreign nationals who he knew had ties to senior Russian government officials. The charge was unsealed on Monday.
One day after FBI investigators interviewed Papadopoulos, he deactivated his Facebook account, which contained evidence of meetings with Russians. Six days later, he got a new cell phone number.

A-League: James Troisi isn’t happy about Melbourne Victory’s two week break before their semi-final with Brisbane – but admitts the Roar have done it tougher.

Brisbane Roar defender Avraam Papadopoulos.
AVRAAM Papadopoulos makes a long awaited homecoming to Melbourne this weekend, but it’s Brisbane where the Roar defender wants to make his permanent base.
The former Greek international, who was born in the Victorian capital before leaving Australia aged three, has been a hit since joining the Roar in February as an injury-replacement player for Daniel Bowles, who required a knee reconstruction and won’t play again until next season.
Papadopoulos will again be at the heart of Brisbane’s defence on Sunday when the Roar take on Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park for a spot in the A-League grand final.
“I am very happy that after so many years I am (going) back to my home town,” the 32-year-old former Olympiacos captain said.

“I have a lot of relatives and friends that are waiting to see me play, and I am very happy to meet them all.”
Papadopoulos has similar sentiments for Roar supporters, and wants to extend his stay in Brisbane beyond this season.
“I am really happy to be part of the Roar family. Everyone has welcomed and accepted me very well,” he said.
“If the coach, the fans and all the staff want me to stay and they are pleased with me, I want to stay.
“But at this moment, the next game is important. We need to win. That is our focus.”
Roar football director Craig Moore said talks to keep Papadopoulos in Brisbane long-term had started.
“He’s come in and shown that he’s played at the highest level, and it was just what our club needed,” Moore said.
Unavailable for the Roar’s AFC Champions League clash on Wednesday night against Muangthong United in Thailand due to suspension, Papadopoulos was one of many first-team regulars who remained in Brisbane this week to properly prepare for Sunday’s do-or-die encounter.
“We were training hard and now we feel ready to meet the rest of the squad in Melbourne. We have some days to train together before the game which is also good,” he said.
“I am looking forward to the match, and what’s most important is all my teammates to be focused and play for the win.”
Success over the Victory will earn three-time champions Brisbane a fourth grand final appearance in seven years.
“I believe that we can win the trophy. We have very good players that are very professional with high quality,” Papadopoulos said.
“Roar can be champions.”
