NASA’s Mars Rover Curiosity has sent a fresh update, and it appears the science-lab-on-wheels has been busy acting like a tourist, snapping selfies at famous sites and taking stunning panoramic photos of the Martian landscape.

The rover, which is part of NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory mission, sends back raw images of what it encounters based on commands sent from the mission team.

The latest batch of photos shows the dusty robot posing for a selfie on Vera Rubin ridge which it’s been investigating for the past few months in a bid to establish whether Mars is, or ever was, capable of supporting life.

In the background of the picture, the 3.4 mile high Mount Sharp can be seen just behind Curiosity’s head.

The selfie was included in a huge tranche of images recounting what Curiosity has been doing in recent months. From the collection, NASA researchers stitched together a stunning panoramic view of Gale Crater, which the rover has been exploring since it touched down in August 2012.

The full view features a total of 16 photos pieced together. The pictures were taken from the rover’s vantage point on the side of the mountain, more than 1,000 feet above the crater.

It stretches across an expanse greater than 30 miles and shows the route the rover has taken over the last five years as it trundles around at an average speed of one centimetre per second.

“Even though Curiosity has been steadily climbing for five years, this is the first time we could look back and see the whole mission laid out below us,”said Ashwin Vasavada of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who works with Curiosity.

“From our perch on Vera Rubin Ridge, the vast plains of the crater floor stretch out to the spectacular mountain range that forms the northern rim of Gale Crater.”

Curiosity will soon go back to drilling for soil samples, this time along the Vera Rubin Ridge.

Class A — the Pro, Pro-Am and Am outright divisions — is where the biggest money is at, with all the top machines unlikely to give you much change from $ 600,000.

The sleek McLaren 650 GT3s are back to avenge last year’s dour run and chase a repeat of 2016’s victory, their charge led by Supercars stars Shane van Gisbergen, Craig Lowndes, Scott McLaughlin and Tim Slade across a trio of McElrea Racing-run entries.

Then there’s Porsche, who has never triumphed in a big enduro at Bathurst but finished the bridesmaid twice in mid-nineties runnings of the 12 Hour as well as last year.

After dipping their toe in the water of the outright class last year, they’ve brought their big guns for 2018.

The factory has sent its crack Manthey Racing squad among a four-car attack, along with a host of their elite pilots, including Australia’s own factory junior driver Matt Campbell and Le Mans 24 Hours winner Earl Bamber.

“For a while there, it was this ‘far away race’,” Bamber explained.

“But after coming here last year the Manthey Racing guys have seen what race it is and it’s really clear it’s something we need to tick the box.”

Porsche’s German rivals are also chasing redemption of their own.

BMW left empty-handed from their return to Bathurst at last year’s 12 Hour, but for one of the privately-entered M6 GT3s making it onto the front row.

It was a drive that earnt Bathurst 1000-winner Chaz Mostert a call-up to race for the factory in Asia. This year he returns to the 12 Hour with the legendary Schnitzer team alongside two of the Munich marques favoured sons, two-time DTM champ Marco Wittmann and Augusto Farfus.

Mercedes has reigning Supercars champ Jamie Whincup and Bathurst 1000 winner David Reynolds among a five-car line-up, two of which hail from British squad Strakka Racing.

Audi has arrived with its now-traditional armada, a total of eight R8 LMS entries across Class A. Local heroes Garth Tander, Will Davison and Lee Holdsworth join former F1 prospects Robin Frijns, Markus Winkelhock and Pedro Lamy in a stacked driving roster.

And let’s not forget Bentley.

Yes, Bentley. A few years ago they took their Continental, ripped out 1000kg-worth of its luxurious features and took it racing.

This year’s 12 Hour represents the car’s last race before a new model comes on stream, the British M-Sport squad hoping to send it out a winner after near-misses in each of the past three events.

Though wildly different machines, the rules balance each vehicle to ensure even performance across the entire lap. Where some are bullets down the straights, others are lightning-fast across the top, while the rest are excellent all-rounders.

The action gets underway with four practice sessions on Friday ahead of qualifying and racing over the weekend.

Traffic jam at Mount Panorama https://briefnews.eu/traffic-jam-at-mount-panorama/ https://briefnews.eu/traffic-jam-at-mount-panorama/#respond Sat, 23 Sep 2017 12:56:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/traffic-jam-at-mount-panorama/ RUSSELL Ingall has predicted this year’s Bathurst 1000 will be the most competitive in recent memory with the V8 enforcer declaring Prodrive Racing Australia have become a Mount Panorama heavyweight.

Just two weeks out from the great race, Ingall said that PRA set up a three-way Bathurst 1000 battle at Sandown with DJR/Team Penske and the Red Bull Holden Racing Team to announce their Mount Panorama intent.

Ingall predicted an unprecedented eight drivers could not be split with all drivers except for PRA’s Jason Bright a genuine shot at winning the 1000km fight.

“We have three super competitive big teams all in form as we head into the biggest race of the year,’’ Ingall said.

“It is almost unheard of to have a trio of teams all equal heading into Bathurst. Nine times out of 10 one team will be kicking away and another will be holding on. What this means is that we will have one of the most competitive battles ever.

“Good luck picking a winner.’’

PRA limped into the season as Red Bull and Team Penske went on a rampage with the two teams fighting for the right to be called the sport’s best.

Scott McLaughlin has led the Penske charge amid a relentless attack from Red Bull’s Jamie Whincup.

But PRA have announced themselves as a force with Chaz Mostert joining the championship fight and Cameron Waters claiming a shock win at the Sandown 500 last start.

“I really thought that PRA would vanish as a force this year,’’ Ingall said.

“Given the rise of DJR/Team Penske and the continued fight from the benchmark team Red Bull I thought they would go backwards.

“I thought with what happened with the restructuring of the team and what they showed at the start of the year they would slip back to being on the next line of teams with Brad Jones Racing and Garry Rogers.

“I thought they would be fighting for the last spot on the podium.

“But to their credit they turned it around. They were genuinely fast at Sandown. They had genuine car speed. And what that has given us is three formidable teams.’’

Ingall said that Fabian Coulthard (DJRTP), Shane Van Gisbergen (RBHRT), Craig Lowndes (Triple Eight), and Mark Winterbottom (PRA) would join Whincup, Waters, Mostert and McLaughlin as Bathurst contenders.

“That is what makes it so interesting,’’ Ingall said.

“It is not just that the teams are fast but it is that all their drivers are fast and in form. You have to throw a bloke like Lowndes in their too because he is always a Bathurst chance.

“You look at all of them and they are very hard to split. I really could not pick a winner. You have fast blokes in fast cars, which does not always happen. You often get good drivers in average cars and average drivers in good cars.

“This is what we want and I can’t wait. Bring it on.’’

Princess Diana documentary: Panorama interview body language shows ‘anger’ expert reveals https://briefnews.eu/princess-diana-documentary-panorama-interview-body-language-shows-anger-expert-reveals/ https://briefnews.eu/princess-diana-documentary-panorama-interview-body-language-shows-anger-expert-reveals/#respond Sun, 06 Aug 2017 03:39:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/princess-diana-documentary-panorama-interview-body-language-shows-anger-expert-reveals/

The intimate documentary was unprecedented, with no royal speaking so candidly to the press before – although there were some reports Diana went on to regret ever doing the interview.

Princess Diana was both praised and condemned for her decision to allow the cameras into her crumbling marriage and private life.

22 years on, the Panorama footage is no less shocking, with revelations of adultery, an eating disorder, self-harm and isolation from the young Princess.

Diana appeared to speak very freely in the interview – but what does her body language reveal? Expert Judi James analysed the footage for Express.co.uk.

“Watching this interview through contemporary eyes in an age where celebrity revelations about depression, eating disorders and divorce appear in the press on a daily basis it is easy to underestimate the strength, resolve and bravery of Diana’s words in the context of the climate she lived in.

“With her high, girlish vocal tone and those huge doe eyes looking close to tears (a look partly created by the use of white liner on the inner rim of her lower lids, which was a fashion trend of the time) her appearance can look deceptively vulnerable.

“But a proper examination of her body language and words suggest a much stronger, determined and apparently honest woman driven less by self-pity and vulnerability and more by a sometimes angry determination to set the record right.

“Her overall delivery is intelligent, thoughtful and controlled. She pauses slightly before each answer and her eyes tend to roll up to a spot that suggests honesty and recalled memory rather than fabrication. Her responses are forensic in terms of her verbal constructions while her lack of verbal fillers or hesitations suggest a woman with total clarity of thought holding an analytical review of her history plus quite high levels of confidence.

Princess Diana documentary: Body language of Diana revealed by an expert

“She makes a telling switch from ‘I’ to ‘You’ and ‘One’ when she talks about her depression and eating disorder which suggests a desire to de-personalise and generalise  the experience but this does seem in keeping with her claims that she felt it equipped her with the empathy to help others in a similar situation.

“Considering the subjects covered her stronger emotions are held skilfully and quite amazingly in check throughout the interview although there are smaller signs of body language leakage that might reveal some of her suppressed thoughts.”

When discussing love and romance, Diana’s body language takes a stark turn. Judi revealed: “There are two very emphatic and more openly emotional body language moments. One is when she says ‘I adored him’ about James Hewitt and the other comes in the steely eye expression and toughening of tone when she describes her situation as ‘a chess game’ and announces ‘I’ll fight’ what she refers to as ‘The enemy’. Her pace picks up during this section and her tone is noticeably stronger.

“When she wants to imply there is more she could say she uses emphatic eye contact but with a sad eye expression accompanied by a dipped head and a wry smile. Her discussion of her marriage problems causes a brief accelerated blink rate that could be either anger or anxiety and when Camilla comes up she takes some deeper breaths, bites her lips and performs one of only a couple of hand-barriers when she touches her lip briefly.”

She refers to Charles with care and a lack of open bitterness but two micro-gestures suggest negative emotions

Judi James, author and body language expert

The most infamous section of the interview was Diana discussing Camilla Parker-Bowles, and her body language does not hide her thoughts.

Judi explained: “The line ‘There were three of us in this marriage’ does sound like a political sound bite but her strength of feeling creates an eye cut-off, where she looks down to hide her feelings.

“She refers to Charles with care and a lack of open bitterness but two micro-gestures suggest negative emotions when his name comes up. Her mouth drops and there is a display of the lower teeth suggesting a jaw-jut that is often a sign of anger and a desire to fight.

“Compared to her more open hostility to the press which she accuses of ‘harassment’ and where the anger is visible in her eyes and she even employs a raised index finger of command and control though, any anger about Charles is easily suppressed.”

Princess Diana body language: Diana often looked close to tears, but she has a steely resolve

Surprisingly, despite the acrimonious relationship between them, Judi said Diana’s body language did not show too much bitterness towards Prince Charles.

Judi said: “She was accused of putting the boot in by implying he would never be king but her words are cleverly caring at this point and she does seem to be concerned for his personal struggle rather than starting rumours to be deliberately vengeful.

“Of course she looks like a woman who knew the impact of every word she spoke in this interview but she also looks honest and genuinely strong and determined.

“She could have wept to try to gain sympathy and she could have shown open anger about Camilla but she opted for a calm, rational and measured delivery instead, suggesting her core goal was to dispel any rumours about a weak woman with acute emotional problems.”

Panorama holiday shot goes hideously wrong… and creates THIS odd illusion https://briefnews.eu/panorama-holiday-shot-goes-hideously-wrong-and-creates-this-odd-illusion/ https://briefnews.eu/panorama-holiday-shot-goes-hideously-wrong-and-creates-this-odd-illusion/#respond Thu, 03 Aug 2017 14:51:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/panorama-holiday-shot-goes-hideously-wrong-and-creates-this-odd-illusion/

An attempt to take a beautiful photo on holiday can easily be ruined by something.

However, sometimes the photographer themselves ends up being the one to cause the problem.

The panorama shot of a man in front of some mountains results in a rather creepy image.

It certainly wasn’t the shot they were expecting.

The image on Boredpanda.com was meant to be taken of a young man standing in front of a mountain range.

The panorama shot, however, didn’t go quite to plan.

The man’s body ends up being ruined by the shot and losing his entire torso in the process.

The result is a creepy illusion of his head on a pair of legs.

Fellow users explained how his species was very common for the region.

One joked: “The Alps are home to some endemic species. Here we see a sight of the two-legged head-hopper.”

Others loved his nature comment, even going along with the joke.

Another wrote: “I read it in Sir David Attenborough’s voice and am laughing so hard.”
