Kane became only the third England player to score a hat-trick in a major finals tournament in the thrashing of Panama that assures them of a place in the last 16 with a game to spare. It was England’s biggest win in a World Cup finals tournament and sets them up for the clash with Belgium which will decide who wins Group G. After matching 1966 hero Sir Geoff Hurst and 1986 Golden Boot winner Gary Lineker, skipper Kane said: “Can we go all the way? You have to believe, there is a long way to go, a lot of hard work but we just have to stick to our game plan. “We got to go into the game against Belgium looking to win but this win gives us a bit of a cushion.” Harry Kane says England can win the World Cup after a record-breaking win
We got to go into the game against Belgium looking to win but this win gives us a bit of a cushion Ashley Young echoed the upbeat mood in the camp by saying: “This could be the start of something good.” Gareth Southgate was delighted that England did not just rely on Kane, with John Stones scoring twice while Jesse Lingard scored the best goal of the game. Southgate he wants England to keep their foot down on the pedal by beating Belgium, although he is toying with changing his team. “We would want to keep momentum and keep progressing as a team,” he said. “I’ve heard talk of it being better finishing second but how do you work all that out really? Let’s go and enjoy it again. “It’s nice; it’s a game where we’re not up to our neck in pressure. We have some decisions to make because the harmony of the group is important to me. “The three players we brought on are really critical in terms of what we do in training and their enthusiasm around the group. “There are others who we didn’t get into the game. Some have been a couple of weeks without a match and we’re going to need more people as we get further into the tournament. But we want to keep playing well and keep the consistency in our play. “We have to decide over the next 36 hours what our priority is. For me, the harmony of the group is high on that list. I think we’ve had good performances in the warm-up games against Costa Rica with a different XI who played against Nigeria. I have complete trust in all the players. “We look a bit different because of the profile of players in certain positions, but I know we’ll get a high level of performance. “At this moment my thoughts are with the players who haven’t played as much, but I have to consider everything before I decide upon my team. “The only downside was the goal at the end. We wanted to control the group with our goal difference and we’ve missed out on that opportunity, but it would be harsh to criticise the players after a win like that in that heat. “We must enjoy the win. There is pressure around the World Cup and the players have dealt with that really well to this point.” Harry Kane scores from the penalty spot for England Asked about Kane’s current level in a question mentioning Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, England manager Southgate said: “Well, clearly the stage to do that is this one. He’s started brilliantly. “You can dismiss penalties as being easy, but the length of time he had to wait before taking that (first one) and the number of distractions, to then keep focused, start again and refocus tells you a bit about the mental toughness that he’s got. “Look, he’s there, he’s up at the top. We wouldn’t swap him for anyone in the tournament in terms of number nines. “You know that when he gets opportunities he’s going to bury them. You sit there very confident in his ability to take chances. “But as important in that is the way he sacrifices himself for the team in the way he presses, holds the ball up, contributes to the overall game. “He’s not just a player that stands up front and waits for chances and that’s important within the ethic of the team we’re trying to create.” Kane went off soon after wrapping up his hat-trick – England’s only goal of a second half that was never likely to get near the five struck before the break. “It’s strange because I enjoyed the win against Tunisia more because of the tension in it and the fact that you get over the line when you’re really under pressure,” Southgate said. “It was very, very special. John Stones celebrates after scoring for England “Just before half-time the game was done today, so it was a very, very strange feeling watching the second half, just trying to encourage the players to keep professional in the way that they played and be a top team by being ruthless. “I was pleased the captain got his hat-trick because it meant he had the hump less when I brought him off because I know the importance for him of scoring goals. “Very strange because I think we probably at times played better the other night than we have done today, but today we were really ruthless in front of goal. “A different type of challenge and I know how many people have been watching at home on a Sunday afternoon, so it was lovely that we could give them goals to celebrate. “I think they can see what we’re trying to do and the way we’re trying to play and that the players are enjoying their football. “You don’t get many opportunities to play in a game like that for England.” Southgate was largely happy with his side’s display in the Nizhny Novgorod heat against aggressive Panama. “Before half-time, there were some extreme moments,” Southgate said. “I am really pleased that we didn’t get involved and come out with just that one yellow. Jesse Lingard scored the best goal of the game “It’s just a different type of test that the players have had to deal with. “In this heat, it would have been easy for the players to lose self-control.” That solitary booking may end up boosting England’s hopes of topping Group G given fair play is one of the criteria looked at if points, goal difference and goal scored are all the same. That is the scenario heading into Thursday’s clash with Belgium, who would reportedly rather finish as runners-up. “We would want to keep momentum and keep progressing as a team,” Southgate added. “I’ve heard talk of, ‘Is it better to finish first or second?’ I am not sure how we’re going to work all of that out really so let’s just go and enjoy the game again. “It’s nice that it’s a game where we’re not up to our neck in pressure. “We have got some decisions to make because the harmony of the group is important to me.”

Friends David and Luis took their makeshift banner to Panama’s match with England at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium. The sign reads: “Thank you Russia, from our hearts – Panama”, and is completed with the hashtag “I love khachapuri”.
Talking about the traditional Georgian dish of cheese-filled bread, David said: “I love khachapuri and so far as long as I have been in Russia, they have been amazing, amazing!”

However, the pair explained that the thank you wasn’t just for the food, but for the warm welcome from the Russian people.
“It’s a thank you to Russia, to everyone I have met so far in Russia who has been so warm,” David explained. “It’s been so special our visit to Russia, seriously. We’ve loved every single minute since we’ve been here.”
The two were attending their second game in Russia, having attended Panama’s opener versus Belgium in Sochi, a 3-0 defeat for ‘The Canal Men’.
“We went to both games. Sochi and Nizhny Novgorod. And we went to Moscow too and everyone has been so nice to us, we really had to make this banner,” Luis said.
The pair would not make the final game against Tunisia in Mordovia Arena, Saransk on Thursday, having to fly back home and return to work, something they seemed in buoyant mood.
“We have to go home. It’s a bit of a long flight. I’ve got to go back to work, man, I’m on vacation right now. But I’m very happy with my experience, I don’t mind. What I’ve lived here, will be something I will remember for the rest of my life,” Luis admitted.
Despite the pair admitting that “nobody likes leaving the World Cup”, they were content with having seen Panama make history by playing in their first World Cup game and the scoring the nation’s first ever goal.
“We’ll be able to tell this story to our kids, our grandkids you name it. This will go down in history,” the delighted duo said.
Despite going down 6-1 to an England side inspired by captain Harry Kane, who scored a hattrick in the game to bring his World Cup tally to five goals in two games, David and Luis expressed optimism that one day Panama

“There is gonna be a time when we come head to head with England, and they are gonna have a hard time and we’re gonna beat them. Just like we did with the US. Ten, twelve, fifteen years ago we had a rough time with the US and now, where are they?” David said.

Harry Kane scored a hat trick to help England to its most one-sided World Cup victory, a 6-1 rout of Panama on Sunday in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, that secured a place in the last 16 with a game to spare.
John Stones headed in two goals and Jesse Lingard curled in another. England's previous high for goals in a World Cup match was set in its 4-2 victory over Germany in 1966 final.
Two of Kane's goals came from the penalty spot and the third via his heel. He leads the tournament with five goals, one more than Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku.
England goes into the Group G finale against Belgium level on points and with the same goal difference after conceding a late goal against Panama, which was eliminated after two matches in its World Cup debut.

TWITTER ROUND-UP
Chris: This afternoon’s game between Panama and Belgium is the first time we’ll have seen a proper mis-match of playing ability in this World Cup. Big scoreline inbound…
Tom: Still waiting for one of the World Cup “contenders” to play an impressive opening match. Wonder if Belgium might be the first to do so as they are far better than Panama.
Sean: Time too watch Belgium! Should hammer Panama on paper but not expecting anything after this week. 2-0 maybe 3-0 I’m saying though.
The people have spoken, and they all agree that Panama are going to take a beating.
BIG MONEY…
15:25: I’ve just heard that the 2018 FIFA World Cup is set to become the most wagered event of all time, with as much as £1.5 billion being staked on the tournament.
£1.5billion?! The boffins down at BonusCodeBets.co.uk found that the total amount wagered equates to £4,000 per second.
I don’t know about these punters, but I haven’t won a sausage from my series of mahussive £1 stakes.

TEAM NEWS – PANAMA
15:20: Now I’ll admit my knowledge of the Panama squad isn’t as strong as my love of the trademark hat would suggest.
I know that 37-year-old Blas Perez starts in attack by himself. He’s got a task on his hands to navigate his way past Boyata, Vertonghen and Alderweireld.
TEAM NEWS – BELGIUM
15:15: OK, let’s see what Roberto Martinez has done with this starting XI.
There aren’t too many surprises with Dries Mertens, Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard forming the three-pronged attack.
The injured Vincent Kompany is replaced by Celtic’s Dedryck Boyata, while Tottenham duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are also included.

PRIVILEGED…
15:05: Roberto Martinez knows he’s a lucky boy to have this star-studded squad at his disposal.
Makes a change from the Wigan days I suppose. Although Gary Caldwell shouldn’t be underestimated…
Anyway, the glittering array of talent has seen Belgium installed as one of the tournament favourites and Spaniard Martinez hopes he can mould his individual stars into an effective team unit.
“We’ve said it for a long time now, we’re privileged to have this sort of group of players, not just with their skills – their skills are essential – but I think it’s more their attitude and the way they are ambassadors for Belgian football,” said Martinez.
“In Belgium we’ve got a population of 11 million and to produce these sort of players is not by accident or coincidence, it’s a lot of work. Now we have got players that are very important at club level and what we want to do is bring them together in the national team.

Netflix wants more Panama Papers-related projects in their line-up. They already have one film in the works about that subject, and now it looks like they’re circling Steven Soderbergh‘s Panama Papers movie The Laundromat. Plus: Meryl Streep has joined the cast, and Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas are both in talks to star.
We’ve already reported on Steven Soderbergh’s Panama Papers movie The Laundromat. The film will focus on “the largest leak of corporate data in history, when 11.5 million documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonesca were revealed back in 2015 and detailed the various legal and illegal ways powerful people and corporations hide their money in offshore accounts.” Soderbergh’s take is going to be based on author Jake Bernstein‘s book Secrecy World, which examines “the web of money laundering and other criminal activity revealed in the data leak.” Now we have some updates.
First up: The Hollywood Reporter reveals that a relatively unknown actress named Meryl Streep will star in Soderbergh’s film. Per THR, “Streep’s character details are being kept in the secret [sic] but sources describe it as being the emotional throughline of the movie.”
And that’s not all. Deadline reports that Antonio Banderas and recent Oscar winner Gary Oldman are both circling the project. There’s no word on who Oldman or Banderas might be playing, but they’re both interesting, talented actors who will each bring their own unique gifts to the film. Banderas has worked with Soderbergh before, in the film Haywire.
In addition to this potential casting news, Deadline also reveals that Netlfix has shown interest in acquiring the project. If they do, this will be the second Panama Papers drama from the streaming service. In 2016, Netflix announced plans to make a Panama Papers movie produced by ER and Shameless producer John Wells. Here’s info about that film:
Netflix and John Wells Productions (Burnt, August Osage County, Love and Mercy) are teaming up to tell the definitive story behind The Panama Papers and the two journalists who, working through an anonymous source known as John Doe, cracked open an unprecedented torrent of lies, diversions and information that revealed how the wealthy hid billions of dollars offshore through a little known law firm in Panama. The work, released in collaboration with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), set off an international firestorm, triggering the resignation of heads of state, judicial investigations in over a dozen countries and a global debate on just how easy it has become for the wealthy to avoid taxes, game the system and evade the law.
Netflix has acquired exclusive rights to Panama Papers: Breaking the Story of How the World’s Rich and Powerful Hide Their Money, a recently released book by Obermaier and Obermayer and will work with producers Wells and Claire Rudnick Polstein and executive producer Zach Studin of John Wells Productions to bring to life the dramatic story in a feature film. Marina Walker, ICIJ deputy director, and Gerard Ryle, who leads the ICIJ’s headquarters staff in Washington D.C., and oversaw the more than 400 journalists in 76 countries on the Panama Papers, are also on-board to collaborate on the film.
Just why Netflix would want two dramas about the same subject is a bit of a puzzler, but I’m sure they have their reasons. Of these two projects, the Soderbergh project is the film I’m most interested in, simply because I love Soderbergh’s work and I’m thrilled that he’s releasing so many new movies now after his brief retirement. Also: the thought of Meryl Streep working with Steven Soderbergh is really cool.

Steven Soderbergh is busier than ever. Within just the past eight months, the director has released an experimental app tied to an HBO miniseries (Mosaic), two feature films (Logan Lucky and Unsane), and he reportedly has another one called High Flying Bird that’s almost finished. But he’s showing no signs of stopping: a new report says the Ocean’s trilogy director will next step behind the camera to direct a Panama Papers movie called The Laundromat. Read more about the project below.
The Playlist has a detailed report about Soderbergh’s latest projects, including the fact that his sports drama High Flying Bird, which shot only two months ago, is basically already finished. That movie has quite the pedigree behind it: it’s written by Tarell Alvin McCraney (Moonlight) and stars André Holland, Zazie Beetz, and Kyle MacLachlan. But it sounds like it could be a while before we see that one hit theaters. In the meantime, Soderbergh is staying busy by diving right in to his next project, a Panama Papers movie from writer Scott Z. Burns (Contagion, Side Effects) called The Laundromat.
The Panama Papers refers to the largest leak of corporate data in history, when 11.5 million documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonesca were revealed back in 2015 and detailed the various legal and illegal ways powerful people and corporations hide their money in offshore accounts. The film will be based on Secrecy World, a book by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jake Bernstein, and examine the web of money laundering and other criminal activity revealed in the data leak.
Soderbergh has been attached to this film for a little while now, but this is the first confirmation we have that he’ll be directing it himself instead of just producing. Also worth noting: he shot Unsane on an iPhone, and he previously indicated that it would take “a pretty good reason” for him to return to using traditional cameras again. Well, apparently he’s found a good reason: The Playlist says that “because of the epic scale of the movie, which will shoot in six countries, he’ll be back using the latest RED Cameras.”
The report proclaims that The Laundromat is “gearing up for a fall shoot” and promises that “a powerhouse cast is waiting in the wings”, though exactly which actors will be involved remains a mystery for now.
As if all this wasn’t enough to keep Soderbergh occupied, he’s also reuniting with Lem Dobbs (Haywire, The Limey) for a six-part TV miniseries called Emin Pasha. Head over to The Playlist to read more about that show, and we’ll keep you posted with more info about The Laundromat as soon as we can.

GROUP E: Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia
GROUP F: Germany, Mexico, Sweden, South Korea
GROUP G: Belgium, England, Tunisia, Panama

15:25: The legends are taking to the stage for the draw – followed by elaborately dressed women, in bizarre outfits as if they are auditioning for a Disney parade.
We have Cafu, Carles Puyol and Diego Maradona. Now Gary Lineker.
Won’t be long before we are underway.

15:19: Our man Matt Dunn is in Russia – but all is not well.
“The wifi is intermittent, mobile phones do not work and despite the mounting excitement, nobody is even allowed out to go to the toilet!
“Russia have had six years to prepare for this, it is not starting well on a logistical level.
“The room is in lockdown, we are told, because Vladimir Putin is on his way. Hopefully he arrives soon – fingers and legs crossed.
“In an ominous nod to the tournament, the WiFi has gone down.
“‘It does work, just not at the moment’ says a helpful organiser.
“Let’s hope the main computer works and that FIFA won’t have to do what I am doing and rely on an iPhone.”
15:16: Gareth Southgate is in position. Roberto Martinez is in position. And so are 28 other national team managers.
But two are not – so who are they?
Well, Australia (who have no boss) and Uruguay haven’t made it. Must have had something else on, eh.

World Cup draw: The balls are drawn at 3.22pm
15:10: Sam Allardyce should have been out in Russia today, waiting to hear England’s fate.
Except he’s not. He’s in rainy, cold Everton – as opposed to snowy, cold Russia – on his unveiling as the new Toffees boss.
Oh what might have been. 12 minutes to go until those balls are drawn… Vladimir Putin is currently on stage in the Kremlin.
15:05: One Match of the Day host in Russia – in Gary Lineker – and another in Alan Shearer in the studio for the BBC.
What a treat it’s going to be for us. Now hearing the draw will start at exactly 15:22.
We take no loss or responsibility for the fact FIFA may waffle on and on and this time could be drastically wrong.
14:55: There’s five minutes to go until the coverage starts – but it’ll be another half hour until the balls get drawn.
Whatever happens today, England will base themselves in a remote hotel near St Petersburg for the duration of their Russia 2018 campaign.
Gareth Southgate has confirmed the FA had chosen the ForRestMix hotel in Repino, a village on the coastal road towards the Finnish border, because it offered the “right balance” of climate, comfort, security, training facilities and travel times.
Might pop over there, myself.
14:30: Few dodgy outfits already spotted.
Tarik Najem, the General Secretary of the Moroccan Football Association, arrived in a distinctive (the best word we can describe it) jacket.
While Diego Maradona has been spotted early on with a gold bow tie.
He’s the second best Diego on show today – see 14:15.

There will also be another familiar face in Gary Lineker, who is hosting the draw.
So why is Gary Lineker at the World Cup draw, I hear you ask? Here’s a full rundown as to why.
Pot 1: Russia (hosts), Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium, Poland, France
Pot 2: Spain, Peru, Switzerland, England, Colombia, Uruguay, Mexico, Croatia

Easy, then!
13:30: Match of the Day and BT Sport football host Gary Lineker will be a familiar face to British audiences as he co-presents the draw with Russian journalist Maria Komandnaya.
He faced criticism for taking on the role after previously speaking out against FIFA over its various corruption scandals.

The World Cup draw takes place in Russia
13:25: So, what’s the worst possible draw for England?
Based on the October FIFA rankings it would be Germany, Costa Rica and Nigeria. There are other nightmare scenarios too though – Brazil, Sweden and Nigeria would also be pretty unpalatable.
The easiest draw, based on the rankings, would be Russia, Senegal and Saudi Arabia. But England proved at the 2010 World Cup that any group can be tough, scraping through to the knockout stage with two draws and a win against the United States, Algeria and Slovenia respectively.
13:20: Well, a bloody good side. Our team have compiled a World Cup XI of missing players below. Decent line-up, eh?
13:00: Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the 2018 World Cup draw.
We’re expecting it to start at 15:00 UK time but, in the meantime, we have lots to keep you in touch with.
Our man Matthew Dunn is on the ground in Russia to bring you all the latest.
So, how does it work?
The 32 teams will be split into eight four-team groups.
Each team is in one of four pots, with their position in the FIFA world rankings for October determining which pot they occupy.
The exception to that is hosts Russia, who are in Pot One. England are in Pot Two. T
here can be a maximum of two European sides per group, but no other confederation can have more than one team in a group, so no South American sides will go head to head in the group phase for example.
Owners of the Trump International Hotel in Panama are working to strip the US president’s name from the building and fire the hotel management. The decision follows a steady rejection of the Trump brand from properties around the world.
The 70-story building, located on Panama City’s waterfront, once paid at least $ 32 million to associate with Donald Trump. The 369-room condominium-hotel has been struggling with poor occupancy, however.
The move to erase the president’s name and fire the hotel management followed the news that Trump was being paid to end a similar management contract for the Trump Soho hotel in New York.
“I bought there because I thought Trump’s name made it a safe investment,” Al Monstavicius, a retired Nevada doctor who owns a penthouse hotel unit in the Panama project told AP. “But Latinos are a real problem for him in Panama.”
The Trump Organization acknowledged to AP the effort to strip away the Panama property’s management and brand. It said it believed the move was a contract violation.
Owners of apartments and hotel units at the Panama property have previously complained about problems with Trump’s management. In October 2015, AP reported owners of apartments in the building had revolted over alleged mismanagement, firing Trump’s manager from the building’s overall board of directors. Trump threatened to sue but the claim was settled and Trump remained manager of the hotel component of the tower.
“Not only do we have a valid, binding and enforceable long-term management agreement, but any suggestion that the hotel is not performing up to expectations is belied by the actual facts,” the Trump Organization said in a statement.
The Panama move follows similar efforts at other buildings. Earlier this month, an apartment complex on Manhattan’s West Side stripped Trump’s name from its three buildings after complaints from residents. Close to 600 residents in the Trump Place apartment complex signed a “Dump the Trump name” petition, according to Bloomberg News. The building will use its street address instead.
“We’re very pleased, people felt really good that they could do something,” Linda Gottlieb, one of the petition’s authors, told Bloomberg. “It was an empowering way to protest. It wasn’t a random protest, it was a very specific protest.”
The name change was mutually agreed upon and “simply the enforcement of a pre-existing agreement which has been in place for years,” Amanda Miller, a Trump Organization vice president, told the news outlet in an email.
Even before Trump was elected, a Dubai real estate firm building a $ 6 billion golf complex removed his name and image following a backlash over the presidential candidate’s proposal to “ban all Muslims” from entering the United States.
