The much-awaited proposal by the Trump administration on ending the decades-long stalemate between Israel and Palestine is still in the works and won’t be released for another several months, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman told Jewish media on Sunday. The plan, touted by the US President as a “deal of the century” was supposed to be unveiled early this year, but the dissolution of Israeli parliament and snap elections scheduled for April have reportedly spoiled the cards. Friedman said on Sunday that the upcoming vote is not the only reason, noting that the plan, “while pretty much completed,” still needs “wordsmithing and smoothing.” Washington would release the plan “in a way that gives it the best chance of getting a good reception,” he stated. The proposal has already been rejected by Palestine, that refused to negotiate what it called the “slap of the century” after the US recognized Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and moved its embassy there last year. Subscribe to RT newsletter to get stories the mainstream media won’t tell you. A video accusing Israel of testing on Palestinians the weapons and methods of repression it later exports around the world was removed from Facebook for several hours, and only restored after complaints. “Palestine is Israel’s personal laboratory for testing, refining and showcasing methods and weapons of domination and control,” says journalist Rania Khalek in a video recorded for In The NOW web show and published on Friday. After it was posted on Facebook, however, the video was “erased without explanation.” Several hours later, Facebook restored the video after “some complaints,” Khalek said. Social media giants have the ability to “disappear content as they please,” she noted, adding it is “creepy and alarming and should be loudly opposed.” This is not the first time Facebook has censored pages and content critical of Israel. Facing political pressure after the 2016 US presidential election, the social media giant has stepped up censorship across its platform, teaming up with the NATO-backed Atlantic Council. It has also often had to backtrack on decisions to suspend or remove content as “mistakes,” due to public pushback. In addition to pro-Trump bloggers Diamond and Silk, Facebook’s censorship net also entangled are an article by a pro-Democrat outfit ThinkProgress, as well as the infamous photo of French President Emmanuel Macron with half-naked gang-signing residents of St. Martin, on grounds of rules against “nudity and sexual acts.” “This is why social media giants censoring content is bad. Eventually you’ll get censored,” Khalek said in a tweet on Friday. In her video, Khalek takes aim at Israeli marketing of their military technology as “battle-tested” and “combat-proven,” arguing this means they are being used to oppress Palestinians. Not only have Israeli arms exports quadrupled between 2002 and 2017, the country is the world’s leading supplier of drones, and was even given a contract by the US to build a high-tech “virtual wall” on the US-Mexico border in 2014, according to Khalek. At her last UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday, the outgoing US envoy heaped praise on the Trump Administration’s peace plan which aims to make a breakthrough in the stalled peace process in the region.
Both sides would benefit greatly from a peace agreement, but the Palestinians would benefit more, and the Israelis would risk more.
“I assure you there is a lot for both sides to like,” Haley said, noting that it’s up to Israel and Palestine to tease out the details.
The plan, according to Haley, is “not just a few pages, containing unspecific and unimaginative guidelines,” but a comprehensive roadmap, with “much more thoughtful detail” and “taking advantage of the new world of technology.”

Palestine takes US to International Court of Justice over Jerusalem embassy move
Haley, who has styled herself as one of the most vocal advocates of Israel in the Trump administration, highlighted the “unshakable bond” between the US and Israel, a position that was cemented during her tenure when the US outraged Muslims in Palestine and beyond by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, slashed aid to Palestine by some $ 500 million and quit the UN Human Rights Council over its “bias” against Israel.
While Haley once called the UN General Assembly “morally bankrupt” for approving a resolution that condemned Israel’s use of “excessive, disproportionate and indiscriminate force” against Palestinian civilians in Gaza, as she bid farewell to the UNSC, she nonetheless argued that she has never harbored prejudice against Palestine.
“Given my record, some might mistakenly conclude that I am unsympathetic to the Palestinian people. Nothing could be further from the truth,” she said. Switching gears from reconciliatory to condescending, Haley then stated that “Israel wants a peace agreement but it does not need one,” adding that Palestinians must give up on their “50-year-old demands that have only become less and less realistic.”
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas insists that Ramallah will not accept any peace plan that is not based on the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, which clearly states that the future Palestinian state will be established in the territories occupied by Israel since 1967, with East Jerusalem as the capital.
Abbas has repeatedly decried the US-sponsored “deal of the century,” saying in October that Palestine and Jerusalem are “not for sale or bargaining.”
It’s unclear yet what exactly is in the proposal that has been drafted by US President Donald Trump’s special adviser Jared Kushner and his Middle Eastern envoy Jason Greenblatt, which is expected to be unveiled in early January.
However, neither the Palestinian nor the Israeli side have been enthusiastic about the proposal that could have become the crowning achievement of Haley’s brief ambassadorial career.
Speaking at a conference in November, the Israeli Minister of Justice called the long-awaited plan “a waste of time.”
The Palestinian administration, which has fiercely opposed the plan from the beginning, recently lashed out at it, calling it a “lie” and the “slap of the century.” Mahmoud Al-Habbash, a senior adviser to the PA president, hinted last month that Abbas had been offered a huge paycheck to abandon Jerusalem – something he has vehemently refused to do.
“President Abbas told them: All the billions of dollars in the world will not make me give up one inch of the soil of Jerusalem,” Al-Habbash said. He noted that the plan has yet to win support from the Arab world, despite Washington’s assurances that they are on board.

Twenty-five years ago, the Oslo peace process was born. The process has endured, but it has failed to produce peace between Israelis and Palestinians. During that time, three efforts—by U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama—sought to resolve the conflict. All failed.
Clinton sought to combine intense direct negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians with extensive U.S. involvement. The Bush administration’s approach mostly involved the parties dealing directly with one another, with episodic involvement from the U.S. secretary of state.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

The US is withdrawing from the “optional protocol” in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, John Bolton has confirmed. He said it follows a case brought by Palestine, challenging the US embassy’s move to Jerusalem.
“I am announcing that the president has decided that the United States will withdraw from the optional protocol and dispute resolution to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations,” Bolton said.
“This is in connection with a case brought by the so-called state of Palestine, naming the United States as the defendant, challenging our move of our embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.”

The Palestinian government submitted its application to launch proceedings against the US on Friday. The 14-page complaint, released by the UN’s principal judicial body, alleges that the US, as a party of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, has flouted its obligation by setting up an embassy outside the territory of the host state, Israel.
It points out that, in accordance with the 1947 UN Plan for Palestine and numerous subsequent UN resolutions to the same effect, Jerusalem should be placed under an international regime as a “separate body” or “corpus separatum.” Instead, Israel illegally took control over Jerusalem by “use of force” and a series of legislative and administrative means “in an attempt to annex the city.” Thus, the US had no right to open its embassy there.
“The relocation of the United States embassy in Israel to the Holy City of Jerusalem constitutes a breach of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 18 April 1961.”
The Palestinian suit is calling on the court to declare the US embassy move in violation of international diplomatic law and order Washington “to withdraw the diplomatic mission” from the city.
The US opened its embassy in Jerusalem in May after US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize the city as Israel’s capital in December. The move has drawn a fierce backlash – including from some of America’s allies in Europe – and was met with mass protests in Palestine and across the Arab world.
The Palestinian government’s complaint cites the recent decision by Paraguay to return its embassy to Tel Aviv, cancelling the right-wing government’s previous decision.
Palestine was granted non-member observer status at the UN in 2012. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas recently indicated he is willing to go both to the International Criminal Court (ICC), which effectively serves as a war crime tribunal, and the International Court of Justice over the US policy, as well as alleged war crimes by Israel, such as ethnic cleansing, forcible evictions and demolition of Palestinian homes.
Apart from the embassy issue, Abbas said that he would sue the US over its decision to defund the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.
In May, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry appealed to the ICC to launch an inquiry into Israeli “crimes against humanity” and its rampant construction of illegal settlements as well as other violations of the international law, including the killing of Palestinian protesters. The US has vowed to shield its ally Israel from criminal prosecution, threatening to sanction ICC judges and shutting down the offices of the Palestinian Liberation Organization in Washington, DC, in retaliation.

By linking 12 million Palestinians across the West Bank, Gaza and the diaspora, 28-year-old Derrar Ghanem is connecting social entrepreneurs with the tools they need, while shifting perceptions of the Palestinian Territories. But through the haze of ongoing strife, it’s hard for anyone to see beyond what is widely recognized as an Israeli occupation of large parts of the territories.
Born in Athens to a Palestinian father and a Greek-American mother, Ghanem was raised in the city of Jenin in the West Bank. His father, a farmer, struggled to secure a loan to buy equipment. It’s why two years ago he was struck by Besan Abu-Joudeh’s idea to start a crowdfunding platform. At the time Ghanem, a political science and philosophy major at Birzeit University, was managing a co-working space called Work Factory in Ramallah.
We look for social entrepreneurs who have their skin in the game and can show it.
Derrar Ghanem
“I thought ’There’s another great idea by an entrepreneur that’ll probably just fizzle out.’ Whatever. I let it go,” Ghanem says. But the next day, Abu-Joudeh called to set up a meeting, winning Ghanem over with her seriousness and passion. Ghanem was attuned to the challenge of securing capital, whether from a bank or the government. “That was the push and motivation,” he says. “We need an alternative means of raising funds. And imagine how many people we can help.”
Together with Abu-Joudeh, Mahran Isamail and three others who have since bowed out, the team established BuildPalestine in October 2016. It’s more than just another Kickstarter. The platform includes “crowdsolving” — applying the wisdom of people across the globe to nettlesome problems. In the background, BuildPalestine’s campaigns are carefully curated, and entrepreneurs are trained in social entrepreneurship and innovation, whether they’re new to the scene or representing established organizations. BuildPalestine also invites experts, local governments and community members to collaborate on solving local problems.

BuildPalestine’s board members — spread across oceans and in fields from film to business to human rights — emphasize transparency and impact for their global donors. Board chair Sara Husseini describes Ghanem as “passionate, creative and energetic — someone who believes that anything can be achieved if you set your mind to it.” As chief outreach officer, he is tasked with overseeing day-to-day activities, from seeking out partnerships to leading trainings, workshops and events. “We look for social entrepreneurs who have their skin in the game and can show it,” he says.
It’s a far different model for building up the territories than international aid, which BuildPalestine’s leaders criticize. “Palestine’s issue is the occupation. Everything else is simply a Band-Aid,” says Abu-Joudeh, who is now based in Washington, D.C., and serves as chief engagement officer. Husseini, a former communications adviser to the Palestinian government, says foreign donations lead to “a perverse situation where aid contributes indirectly toward propping up the occupation, by allowing the Israeli government to maintain control over Palestinian land without having to bear the cost.”
But can small donations from ordinary folks pooled over the internet really match the deep pockets of global governments? “Crowdfunding can’t be the only solution,” says Vanessa Zuabi, founder of JSR Consulting, which aims to bridge business with social impact. “Long-term sustainable sources of funding are critical. This is where the private sector, as well as efforts in venture philanthropy and impact investing, can play a really important role in Palestine and the Middle East more broadly.” At the same time, Zuabi holds that efforts like BuildPalestine can “shift away from the dependency on government aid funding, democratizing how capital is allocated” and helping to address the “real needs of the communities they are trying to serve.” Ghanem, meanwhile, sees his work as “an alternative” to the big-aid model. “Perhaps it can lead us to something better.”
What sets the BuildPalestine platform apart, its founders say, is its support for people, not ideas. And these local solutions cost as little as $ 5,000. According to World Bank figures, the West Bank and Gaza took in $ 2.4 billion in development assistance and official aid in 2016. So far, BuildPalestine has raised $ 126,000 for 17 projects, aiming to provide a destination for supporters around the world who ask, “How can I help?”
As for Ghanem, who dabbles in deejaying at parties under the name DJ Dar (“house” in Arabic), he dreams of one day organizing an international music festival in the Palestinian Territories. There he could spin records, once again working the crowd.

UN Ambassador Nikki Haley received the wrong kind of welcome at the University of Houston when she was met with chants accusing her of having blood on her hands and of signing off on genocide in her support for Israel.
Haley was mere moments into her speech at the university on Tuesday and had just referred to the “very busy few weeks in American foreign policy” when she was interrupted by a protester shouting, “Nikki Haley, the blood is on your hands.”
“Oh jeez,” a visibly nervous Haley said as the protester continued to shout, “you continue to sign off on the genocide of a native people” to loud applause and booing.
“Nikki, Nikki can’t you see, you are on a killing spree!” a number of protesters shouted. “Haley, Haley, you can’t hide, you sign off on genocide.”
Haley has emerged as a staunch supporter of Israel in her role at the UN. After Israel killed more than 60 Palestinians at the Great Return March protests last week, Haley defended its “restraint” at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council before walking out of the room when Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour began speaking.
“Nikki, Nikki you will see, Palestine will be free!” the protesters shouted. Haley looked uncomfortable throughout, a small smile falling from her face as the chants continued.

The protest ended with a walkout and loud applause as Haley continued to speak. “While disruptive as that might have been, it’s a reason to celebrate, because my husband and my brother are combat veterans and they fought for their right to be able to do that,” she said. The irony of the situation, with the protest being against her support for Israel’s killing of protesters in Gaza, seems to have escaped her.
Students for Justice in Palestine and 12 other groups released a statement explaining their issue with Haley’s presence at the university. “Nikki Haley’s spiteful actions before and during her time as ambassador to the United Nations demonstrate her blatant discrimination against Palestinians and blind eye to injustices around the world,” it said. “Nikki Haley has worked relentlessly to block the UN Humans Rights investigation into Israel’s murderous crimes in Gaza, which resulted in 109 dead and thousands more injured, including children, women and the disabled.”

GENEVA (Reuters) – Almost a dozen countries have agreed to advance their annual contributions to the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees to help it plug a major shortfall after a partial cut-off of U.S. funding, its chief said on Tuesday.
The move by the Trump administration appears linked to a United Nations vote rejecting Washington’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, said Pierre Kraehenbuehl, head of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).See the rest of the story at Business Insider

President Donald Trump appears to be on course to punish the United Nations after the majority of world countries refused to endorse the US President’s recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital. Trump now wants to cut funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) which has received over $ 5 billion in US aid since 1994. In 2016, the US gave the agency over $ 368 million.
“The President has basically said that he doesn’t want to give any additional funding, or stop funding, until the Palestinians are agreeing to come back to the negotiating table,” US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said in New York Tuesday. “What we saw with the resolution was not helpful to the situation. We’re trying to move for a peace process, but if that doesn’t happen, the president is not going to continue to fund that situation.”

Haley’s statement come on the heels of Trump’s tweet rebuking Palestinians for not showing enough “appreciation or respect” to the US after he had “taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table.” Trump also suggested ending the payments of “HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year.”
…peace treaty with Israel. We have taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table, but Israel, for that, would have had to pay more. But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 2, 2018
In the days following Trump’s December 6 announcement on the status of the Holy City and his orders to move the US embassy to Jerusalem, the US vetoed a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution which called for a reversal of Washington’s decision. Opposition to the new American policy towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict took center stage on December 21, when the UN General Assembly (UNGA) overwhelmingly voted in favor of a non-binding resolution calling on the US to rescind its decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Only nine states voted against the UNGA resolution while 35 nations abstained.
On Tuesday, Haley slammed the many UN voices opposing Washington’s ‘vision’ of the Palestinian-Israeli peace process, which has sparked deadly violence across the occupied Palestinian territories. “We very much still want to have a peace process, nothing changes with that. The Palestinians now have to show the world they want to come to the table,” Haley said. “As of now, they’re not coming to the table, but they ask for aid. We’re not giving the aid, we’re going to make sure they come to the table and we want to move forward with the peace process.”
UNRWA is entirely dependent on voluntary contributions from UN member states, and in 2016, the US funded almost 30 percent of UNRWA’s budget. UNRWA’s humanitarian relief is one of the few lifelines extended to over 5 million registered Palestinian refugees who fled their native land in the wake of the 1948 exodus of Palestine, and the 1967 Six-Day Wars, which shaped the current boundaries of Israel.
The agency provides education, health care, and social services to the Palestinian diaspora in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. On a symbolic level, UNRWA provides hope that someday, Palestinians can return to their lands now occupied by Israel. The refugee question is a major obstacle to a two-state solution which aims to forge an independent State of Palestine alongside the State of Israel based on 1967 borders, and which would make East Jerusalem the capital of Palestine.
The Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) political committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday to discuss the latest developments directed from Washington as articulated by Haley, Haaretz reports.

Both Palestinians factions, Hamas and Fatah, have refused to accept the American decision on Jerusalem. While Hamas is committed to fighting for the Palestinian cause, Fatah, led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, vowed to explore all efforts to muster international support for the Palestinians. Earlier, Haaretz reported that the Palestinian Authority will soon apply to join 22 international treaties and conventions in protest against the Jerusalem recognition.
