Cricket player-turned politician Imran Khan has declared victory in Pakistani elections over the party of former PM Nawaz Sharif, jailed for corruption. The voting day was marred by violence and allegations of polls rigging. Khan has addressed the nation from his home in Islamabad, vowing to investigate all the complaints of rigged polls put forward by his opponents – the Pakistan Muslim League, a center-right conservative party, sympathetic to the US. Supporters of its de facto leader Sharif who’s spoiled blood with the country’s military claimed the army shifted the scales in Khan’s favor. Having run on anti-corruption ticket, Khan pledged to “fix” the governance system of Pakistan, vowing to make the country what its founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, actually dreamed of. The leader of the Pakistan Movement for Justice also stated that he will be “embarrassed” to live in the lavish PM palace when over half of Pakistanis live beyond the poverty line. Khan promised to turn the palace into educational or public institution instead. “I started this struggle 22 years ago and thankfully today I have been given a chance to fulfill what I dreamt for the country,” Khan stated. “We will run Pakistan like it’s never been run before.” The elections were marred by a gruesome suicide bombing. Some 371,000 soldiers have been deployed at polling stations across the country, nearly fivefold as many as during last general election in 2013.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – As US influence in Islamabad wanes, Pakistan’s former adversary Russia is building military, diplomatic and economic ties that could upend historic alliances in the region and open up a fast-growing gas market for Moscow’s energy companies.
Russia’s embrace of Pakistan comes at a time when relations between the United States and its historical ally are unraveling over the war in Afghanistan, a remarkable turnaround from the 1980s, when Pakistan helped funnel weapons and US spies across the border to aid Afghan fighters battling Soviet troops.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

The Chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff has accused Pakistan’s main intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) directorate, of having ties with terrorists.
Joseph Dunford made the announcement while facing the Senate Armed Services Committee alongside with the US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Tuesday.
“I think it’s clear to me that the ISI has connections with terrorist groups,” Dunford told the Committee.
Mattis echoed Dunford’s stance on ISI, stating that the agency is pursuing its own agenda while Pakistan itself struggles to fight terrorism.
“They have lost probably more troops than any other single country in the fight against terrorism – at the same time we’ve seen havens left to the terrorists’ own devices. We’ve seen the government of Pakistan come down on terrorists, when the ISI appears to run its own policy,” Mattis said.
Mattis said that Trump’s administration it will try to work with Pakistan in Afghanistan “one more time” before exploring options to curb the alleged support for terrorism from certain elements in the Pakistani government.
“We need to try one more time to make this strategy work with them, by, with and through the Pakistanis, and if our best efforts fail, the president is prepared to take whatever steps are necessary,” Mattis told House Armed Services Committee later Tuesday.
“I will fly in and we will continue to try to work with them,” Mattis added.

Fontgate strikes again. Pakistan’s prime minister Nawaz Sharif has stepped down following a Supreme Court order disqualifying him from holding office. The ruling also called for anti-corruption cases against Sharif and his family. After proving pivotal to the probe that led to today’s decision, Microsoft’s Calibri font could also make an appearance in the next stage of proceedings.
The innocent typeset was dragged into the turmoil in Pakistan last month. Back then, Sharif’s daughter (and heir apparent) Maryam Nawaz was accused of submitting forged documents to the Supreme Court-instituted panel probing her family’s financial assets. In its report, the investigation team said the documents from 2006 were deemed fake because they were in the Calibri font — which wasn’t publicly available until 2007.
Moments after the panel’s findings were released, the internet (being the internet) blew up with jokes about #Fontgate. The Pakistani Twitterverse latched on to the term, using it to lampoon Sharif and his aides. The media also got in on the act, even going so far as to interview Calibri’s creator Lucas De Groot. And, arguably, the best result to come from it all: a reference to the investigation made it on to the font’s Wikipedia page.
Fast-forward to today’s historic decision. Alongside the PM’s dismissal, Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered the country’s anti-corruption body to file references against Sharif and others. The evidence collected by the original investigative panel (including that document) will be used in the subsequent cases in accountability courts.
As it currently stands, Pakistan is left without a PM, and is also set to lose its finance minister (who was also disqualified in today’s order). Sharif’s ruling party, which holds the majority in parliament, will now choose his successor. Whoever takes over won’t be in for an easy ride. Not a single PM in Pakistan’s history has served a full term in office.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – Pakistan‘s top court on Friday disqualified Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from office after a damning corruption probe into his family wealth, cutting short his third stint in power.
The Supreme Court dismissed Sharif after an investigative panel alleged his family could not account for its vast wealth. The court also ordered a criminal investigation against the premier and his family.
“He is no more eligible to be an honest member of the parliament, and he ceases to be holding the office of prime minister,” Judge Ejaz Afzal Khan said in court.
Sharif, 67, has always denied any wrongdoing and has dismissed the investigation into him as biased and inaccurate.
Sharif’s allies have alleged there was a conspiracy to unseat him.
“This is not accountability, it is revenge,” tweeted Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafiq hours before the verdict was announced. “In an effort dislodge us, the democratic system has been made a target.”
Sharif’s two previous stints in power were also cut short, including by a military coup in 1999, but he came back from exile to win a resounding victory in the 2013 general elections.
His ruling PML-N party, which has a majority in the parliament, is now expected to appoint a new prime minister.

On June 16th the IMF warned of re-emerging “vulnerabilities” in Pakistan’s economy. It praised GDP growth of above 5% a year, but noted missed fiscal targets and a ballooning current-account deficit. The fund’s own projections a year ago for the fiscal year ending this June underestimated this deficit by about half the final total of $ 9bn. And based on trends in early April it overestimated the fiscal-year-end foreign-exchange reserves by $ 3bn.
Independent economists point out that, many times before, collapse has come on the heels of an IMF programme’s conclusion. Sakib Sherani, a former government economist, says that to avoid “egg on its face” for cheerleading Pakistan’s economic recovery just months ago, the IMF is slowly changing its story. By the end of 2018, many predict, Pakistan will come…

After much legal wrangling, Pakistan has officially allowed a man who has been dubbed the country’s “last Jew” to change his religion from Islam to Judaism.
Fishel Benkhald was born to a Muslim father and Jewish mother. At the time of his birth, he was registered as a Muslim but says he never practiced Islam and had been seeking to be officially recognized as Jewish on state documents.

Benkhald’s campaign gained international media attention and he was given the moniker “The Last Jew in Pakistan”. The activist, 29, told the Times of Israel that his earliest childhood memories are of practicing Judaism with his mother in Karachi.

Benkhald, who has the Muslim name ‘Faisal’ on his Pakistani ID cards, has identified himself as a Jew on official censuses. He previously said on Facebook that he was beaten up for arguing for rights for non-Muslim Pakistanis.
However, Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) reportedly has little track record of accepting religious conversion requests such as Benkhald’s.
The conversion could potentially be interpreted as committing apostasy, which some Muslim scholars argue breaks Islamic law, and which has been criminalized in several countries – though not Pakistan.
After months of paperwork and appeals, the Interior Ministry has finally approved Benkhald’s application seeking “conversion/correction” of his religion. Benkhald took to Twitter to thank Pakistan, NADRA and the Interior Ministry following the news.
While Benkhald isn’t exactly Pakistan’s ‘last Jew’, he is one of very few living there. The Express Tribune says there are only approximately 745 Jewish families in Pakistan and cite an official from NADRA saying details of their identities are treated as top secret.
In July 2016, Qandeel Baloch, a Pakistani celebrity and social media personality, was strangled to death by her brother. According to reports, her sibling felt Baloch’s openly sexual and sassy online persona had brought such dishonor to their family that the murder was justified. The incident made headlines around the world, sparking anger and calls for an end to Pakistan’s outrageous tradition of “honor killings.”
Remarkably, in the midst of this stormy debate of what image is appropriate for a young Pakistani woman, Faiza Saleem quietly started the Khawatoons, Pakistan’s first all-female comedy troupe.
The Khawatoons (a portmanteau of “khawateen,” which means ladies in Urdu, and “cartoons”) were inspired by the American sketch television program Whose Line Is It Anyway? and their shows follow its rapid and collaborative improv format. Jokes, characters and conflicts are created live onstage, and the performers take turns playing off of each other’s riffs. Their shows, which are only advertised on social media as a safety precaution, are consistently packed, and their reviews have been largely positive. This much success so early on would be heady for a group of comedians anywhere, but in Pakistan, where the simple act of a woman joking in public can be considered a transgression, it’s even more impressive.
“To be honest, Qandeel’s murder did throw me off. Whenever someone dies after being vocal about what they believe, it obviously makes me think about my own future,” says Saleem. “And I do acknowledge that there is an imminent threat — if not now, then later. It is bound to happen, and you yourself know that risk you are about to take when you are in the open.”
That said, Saleem, who happens to be a free-speech-loving attorney by day, thinks the rewards outweigh the risk.
“In Western countries, comedians have more liberty to be more open with their jokes,” Saleem explains to us at her family’s home in an upscale, suburban area of Karachi. “Over here in Pakistan, we don’t talk about religion or politics.”
To an American, the Khawatoons’ most suggestive jokes about body image or relationships would likely seem tame, yet the troupe has still attracted negative comments, mostly online. “Normally, the negative comments, I get them on Facebook, because people do not have the guts to say things to you to your face,” says Saleem. “That’s true of many comedians, but I think we’re under more scrutiny than our male counterparts.
“In our society, being referred to as a fahash [vulgar] woman is not limited to just verbal abuse,” Saleem explains. “It goes on further and becomes life-threatening in some cases. Since I have a leading role with the troupe, I will not do or say things that could be life-threatening or dangerous to us. I am responsible for these girls; I am responsible for their safety.”
To be clear, Faiza Saleem is not Qandeel Baloch. In her videos Baloch spoke frankly about female empowerment or patriarchy, and often did so in revealing clothes with a sexually suggestive pout or eye flutter. In many media reports following her death, she was dubbed the Kim Kardashian of Pakistan.
Saleem, by contrast, is more like Amy Schumer, albeit far less profane. Although her humor is often slapstick, it’s also subtle. She prefers satire and slapstick to break down stereotypes rather than outright confrontation. In her shows and viral videos, she doesn’t violate traditional dress standards, wearing a tunic and often a headscarf.
The other members of the troupe, who range widely in age, experience and background, understand this as well. “In our society, they expect women to just stay at home,” explains the youngest member of the Khawatoons, who asked to remain nameless. “It’s not that we are doing anything wrong. We are just standing up and expressing ourselves. I find that many cannot relate to our shows.”
Saleem’s greatest talent is her ability to impersonate everyday Pakistanis. During a performance she will slip in and out of characters like “Auntie on the Phone,” “Nerdy Nilofer” or “Danger Daadi” with ease while gently taking jabs at her society’s taboos. “Most of the characters are like me, or a part of me,” Saleem says. “I tend to notice a lot of small things — gestures that people do, the voices they have — and it is reflected in my comedy.” Saleem’s comedy is mostly in her native Urdu and often requires knowledge of both the language and the culture to be understood.
In interviews, Saleem makes a point of disabusing her interviewer that she has a progressive or even feminist agenda. She doesn’t set out to make jokes that criticize certain social norms. She wants to be a comedian, not a female comedian — even though what she finds funny may just so happen to deal with gender. Before each show, Saleem pumps up her team by leading a call-and-response chant:
“I am beautiful!”
“I am amazing!”
“I am funny!”
“I am funny not just because this is an all-girls troupe!”
“When you are a woman in Pakistan or in India, everything you do or say becomes a feminist movement,” she says. “The minute you go out of the house you are considered to be endorsing some kind of movement.”
