Flooding in Pakistan's Sindh province.

In August, Pakistan set destructive records as it averaged more than triple its normal August monsoon rainfall. In the southern provinces of Sindh and Balochistan, the number was seven to eight times the average. The resulting flooding killed around 1,500 people and displaced more than 30 million—a catastrophe of incredible scale.

Is this an event we expect a warmer climate to have influenced? As they often do, the World Weather Attribution team quickly analyzed this question and released the results on Thursday. Their peer-reviewed method for these rapid studies is to apply standardized analyses to both historical weather data and climate model simulations. The goal is to find out whether a given weather pattern is part of a long-term trend and then determine whether we expect such a trend to come as a result of human-caused global warming.

Lots of factors

This event is more complex than something like a short-lived heatwave, given that it played out in waves over weeks and depends on highly variable monsoon patterns. Monsoon rains result from the seasonal transport of moist air over land combined with uplift that cools that air, wringing the moisture out of it. This pattern is hit-or-miss in Pakistan, as it often originates over eastern India and bends northward before it can reach Pakistan.

New Zealand break 49-year Pakistan hoodoo https://briefnews.eu/new-zealand-break-49-year-pakistan-hoodoo/ https://briefnews.eu/new-zealand-break-49-year-pakistan-hoodoo/#respond Fri, 07 Dec 2018 18:13:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-zealand-break-49-year-pakistan-hoodoo/ New Zealand have won a series against Pakistan for the first time in 49 years and delivered the home side just its second Test series loss in the UAE in an incredible 123-run victory.

It was a stunning victory and gives New Zealand only it’s fifth series victory in Asia and its first in a decade.

Yasir Shah was the big story of the match, passing Australian Clarrie Grimmett’s 82-year-old record as the fastest player to 200 wickets, with the Pakistani star completing the record in just 33 Test matches, three matches faster than Grimmett.

The 32-year-old won the man of the series award.

“I feel very happy, because I have won man of the series after a long time,” he said.

“I just try to repeat the right things, and I fixed glitches in my action after working with the video analyst. I just try to focus on doing my best. It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t win the series despite the good performance.”

Former cricket star and Pakistani president Imran Khan congratulated the superstar for his incredible record.

Shah even took 29 wickets in the three-match series, but it was a debutant spinner who used to play for New South Wales who gained the headlines.

Leading by 280 into the fourth innings, New Zealand quickly got on top, leaving Pakistan 5/55 before ultimately dismissing the Pakistani’s for 156 to complete the famous victory.

Debutant Will Somerville claimed key wickets in his 3/50 off 20 overs.

The offspinner took seven wickets for the match to put New Zealand in an excellent position.

But it was the inspiring leadership of Kane Williamson which gave New Zealand the win.

In was an impressive performance from New Zealand who scored 274 but finished 74 runs down after the first innings.

Williamson plundered a first innings 89 and went one step further with a stylish 139 in the second innings for his 19th Test century.

“I didn’t wait 49 years. It was fantastic,” Williamson said.
“Beating Pakistan in their backyard is very tough. It feels pretty special, and this will be one that the guys remember for a long time.

“The spinners that came along in this tour, to come here and stand up and play the way they did, you have to bowl a lot of overs to get rewards, but they played a huge part in our win.”

They crumbled to 156 in 56.1 overs on a weary pitch at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The victory gave New Zealand a 2-1 series win after they had taken the first Test by a narrow four-run margin at the same venue.

Pakistan bounced back with an innings and 16-run win in the second Test in Dubai.

New Zealand’s last away series win against Pakistan was a 1-0 victory in matches played in Pakistan in 1969.

It was the Black Caps’ fifth Test series win in their last six played since November 2016.

They have beaten Pakistan, Bangladesh, the West Indies and England — all at home — with the single loss came against South Africa.

Baloch Leader: Trump Speaks a Language Pakistan Can Understand https://briefnews.eu/baloch-leader-trump-speaks-a-language-pakistan-can-understand/ https://briefnews.eu/baloch-leader-trump-speaks-a-language-pakistan-can-understand/#respond Mon, 19 Nov 2018 12:03:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/baloch-leader-trump-speaks-a-language-pakistan-can-understand/ Hyrbyair Marri, the fifth son of Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri, a former national leader and head of one of the largest Baloch tribes in Pakistan, was elected in 1996 to the Provincial Assembly of Balochistan and appointed minister but was later forced to flee Pakistan for Great Britain. Accused of leading the Balochistan Liberation Army — which he denies — Marri was charged and later acquitted of terrorism charges in the U.K. Today, he helms the Free Balochistan Movement, a pro-freedom political party.

OZY sat down with Marri to discuss Pakistani and world politics. This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Hyrbyair marri

This summer’s elections in Pakistan marked the second-ever democratic transition of power in the country, but you called for a boycott. Why?

Hyrbyair Marri: It is an open secret that the elections were rigged and manipulated by the army, who, at the same time, backs Imran Khan [elected prime minister]. Khan has denounced the suffering of the Baloch people on more than one occasion. It is his opportunity to deliver on his promises that he made about Balochistan, but I doubt he will do anything about it. The army needs instability, a volatile scenario, which is key to keep receiving aid and funds from abroad. That is how Islamabad blackmails the West, fostering the same instability that makes the people back the government in search of protection. They will blame India, Afghanistan or Washington, and at the same time, they will keep asking for money.

Stateless peoples, such as the Baloch, the Pashtun, the Sindhi or the Kurds, should join forces to actively fight against oppression.

Hyrbyair Marri

What is the current situation of your people in Pakistan?

Marri: Pakistan has occupied Balochistan for 70 years, and we are subjected to complete and utter poverty so that we concentrate only on survival and do not think of concepts like freedom or independence. Our land is rich, we have massive reserves of gas, oil, uranium and even more gold than South Africa. There are billions of dollars under our feet, but most of them end up in the pockets of the army and the Pakistani elite while many among our people are still cooking with dung. Adding to the plundering of our land, there are over 20,000 forcibly disappeared Baloch due to a “kill and dump” campaign that has been systematically enforced since the 1950s.

You aim for an independent Baloch state of your own. What kind of country would that be?

Marri: We have witnessed all sorts of attempts to import or export something called “democracy” to Africa, Latin America or the Middle East, as well as communism, socialism … but none of them worked as expected. We need a model that roots on the most basic premise of “one person, one vote,” but that also fits within our own social structure, that respects cultural and religious differences, ecology, individual and collective freedoms, human rights and the wishes of its citizens.

But how would such a revolutionary model for the region harmonize with someone who is a political and tribal leader at the same time as you?

Marri: The power of the sirdars [tribal leaders] has to be reduced to zero. We must respect them for what they did for our people, but if they want to participate in politics, they must renounce their privileges. Otherwise we would be building a state like those Gulf monarchies, and we wouldn´t move forward.

Could a Cold War between Washington and Beijing precipitate events in Balochistan?

Marri: China’s presence in Pakistan is increasingly overwhelming. I will never support anyone who backs the exploiters of my land. Stateless peoples, such as the Baloch, the Pashtun, the Sindhi or the Kurds, should join forces to actively fight against oppression. We cannot be just bystanders. On the other hand, how can the United States trust Pakistan? We all know Islamabad is behind the deaths of thousands of NATO troops in Afghanistan, they fund and train jihadis, and they even hosted Osama bin Laden near a military garrison in Abbottabad. Washington needs a reliable ally, [which] we are. Our nation might be small and even weak, but we do not want a new master — just a relationship between partners.

Can Trump be a reliable partner?

Marri: Trump has a clear vision of things in the international arena. His speech is clear, and he sees Pakistan as it really is: a country that always ends up betraying its allies. Trump speaks from a position of strength and in a language that Pakistan can understand. I want to think that he will bring changes to the region.

Pakistan tests nuclear-capable missile after India cancels talks & signs S-400 deal with Russia https://briefnews.eu/pakistan-tests-nuclear-capable-missile-after-india-cancels-talks-signs-s-400-deal-with-russia/ https://briefnews.eu/pakistan-tests-nuclear-capable-missile-after-india-cancels-talks-signs-s-400-deal-with-russia/#respond Tue, 09 Oct 2018 12:40:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pakistan-tests-nuclear-capable-missile-after-india-cancels-talks-signs-s-400-deal-with-russia/ Pakistan has successfully test-launched its nuclear-capable missile system just after its archenemy India refused peace talks with Islamabad and bought billions-worth of weapons from Russia.

The missile system, which can fire both nuclear and conventional projectiles to a distance of 1,300km, was tested on Monday by the Army Strategic Forces Command (ASFC). The test of the Ghauri Ballistic Missile was praised by Pakistani President Arif Alvi, and Prime Minister Imran Khan.

“The launch consolidates Pakistan’s nuclear capability, which is aimed at peace and stability through a credible deterrence regime,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement read.

The test comes weeks after India U-turned on its decision to meet with Pakistan to discuss ways of ensuring peace and stability in the region.

India had initially accepted Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s invitation, but it then backed out over what its foreign minister branded the “brutal killing” of three policemen at the hands of Pakistani militants earlier this month.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also cited Pakistan’s reported distribution of postage stamps purportedly glorifying terrorism as a reason for India refusing to hold talks.

The nuclear-capable-missile launch also follows India signing off a $ 5.4-billion contract for the purchase of S-400 missile systems from Russia.

The deal was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when the two met on Friday in India’s capital of New Delhi.

India is bound to be unsettled by Pakistan’s nuclear-missile testing, given that its neighboring country and long-time enemy was already set to become the world’s fifth largest nuclear power.

In fact, it was reported in September that Pakistan’s nuclear capability had become of “considerable concern” to the US and other countries, as its warheads are poised to increase in number to between 220 and 250 by 2025, according to a new study carried out as part of the Nuclear Information Project, overseen by the Federation of American Scientists.

US strips Pakistan of $300mn in anti-terrorism aid https://briefnews.eu/us-strips-pakistan-of-300mn-in-anti-terrorism-aid/ https://briefnews.eu/us-strips-pakistan-of-300mn-in-anti-terrorism-aid/#respond Sun, 02 Sep 2018 05:30:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-strips-pakistan-of-300mn-in-anti-terrorism-aid/ The Pentagon has recalled $ 300 million of aid earmarked to support Pakistan’s anti-terrorism efforts, accusing Islamabad of going soft on extremists and providing them with safe havens, Reuters reports.

“Due to a lack of Pakistani decisive actions in support of the South Asia Strategy, the remaining $ 300 [million] was reprogrammed,” Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Kone Faulkner said, as cited by Reuters.

The funds were earlier frozen as part of the review initiated by US President Donald Trump that should have determined whether Pakistan is showing enough resilience against the insurgents to be worthy of American assistance.

Falkner pointed out that the cancellation of the aid package, which was part of the so-called Coalition Support Funds (CSF), is not the first that the Trump administration has pushed through. Earlier, US lawmakers moved to cancel another $ 500 million in CSF aid to Pakistan, meaning the country will be short a total of $ 800 million in earmarked aid.

This is in addition to the suspension of $ 255 million in foreign military financing (FMF) to Pakistan, which was initially authorized by the State Department in August last year.

By curtailing a total of over a billion dollars of assistance to Pakistan, Washington is following through on Trump’s pledge to minimize financial contributions to the country, which he accused of shielding terrorists.

In an emotionally charged tweet marking the beginning of the new year, Trump lamented that the US “has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit.” The US leader then accused Islamabad of giving refuge to terrorists that flee from Afghanistan.

The January broadside by Trump was met with indignation in Pakistan, its government rejecting the allegations and threatening to cease cooperation altogether. “We do not have any alliance. This is not how allies behave,” Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said at the time.

While Trump might have declared open season on Pakistan, ordering a freeze on most of the security assistance to the country, the US has long been complaining about Islamabad’s misbehavior, and cutting funding. The Obama administration scaled aid back from $ 2.177 billion allocated in 2014 to $ 1.118 billion in 2016.

The release of the CSF package is conditional to Pakistan’s logistical support of the US-led military operation in the region, primarily against the Afghan Taliban and its affiliate Haqqani network, a Sunni Islamist group that is believed to enjoy support from some elements within Pakistan’s security forces.

The move comes ahead of a visit by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Pakistan on September 5, when he is expected to underscore the need to fight externally oriented terrorists in his meeting with new Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Khan has been known as a staunch opponent of the US, criticizing Washington for linking foreign aid to Pakistan’s cooperation in the fight against insurgents. He has been compared to Trump for his non-political background and authoritarian inclinations, and once vowed to shoot down US drones flying over Pakistani territory.

Khan has recently hinted at rapprochement with India, however, offering a dialogue on the most pressing issues, such as the territorial dispute over Kashmir.

With Pakistan’s relationship with the US seemingly souring, Russia has shown an interest in stepping up cooperation with the new government. Last month, Russia and Pakistan signed a rare agreement that allows Pakistani troops to train at Russian facilities.

Marco Ferrarese

Marco Ferrarese

August 21, 2018

In the mesmerizing mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, a young adventure tour company is doing all it can to bring tourists back to Pakistan. Marco Ferrarese goes full-throttle.

I’m riding a mean 150cc Suzuki along a barren strip of rocks and sand that most would never dare to call a ‘road’. And yet, in the mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, this is the main 200-kilometer link between the legendary Karakoram Highway and Skardu, a lesser-known, but no less stunning, high-altitude desert valley.

As my wheels screech in the rubble, I squeeze to the right near the edge of a 20-meter drop. My wife, Kit Yeng, is sandwiched between my back and a couple of packs. Cold sweat rolls down my spine as I watch the Indus River run and crash between a majestic gorge of fang-like rocks that jut out below us.

Gulping, I look ahead and try to keep cool as I twist the throttle to overtake the pick-up truck that clogs my passage. It puffs exhaust fumes and dust into my face, choking me and blurring my vision. Its back is converted into rows of cages filled with chickens, half of them dead. Each time I get near the meat wagon, the pungent whiff of dying birds, old blood and fresh faeces slaps my nostrils.

What the hell am I doing here? I’ve desperately wanted to visit the northern regions of Pakistan for the past six years. My main problem was obtaining a visa … Given Pakistan’s security situation, one can only apply in his or her country of birth or residence, supported by plenty of paperwork, and a tour operator willing to issue a crucial invitation letter and take full responsibility for each traveler.

I had almost given up, when, at the beginning of this year, I found Karakoram Bikers. For the past couple of years, this small, Gilgit-based motorcycle company has offered visa support, organized self-driving adventure tours and rented out bikes to 180-plus international tourists. They are working against all odds to change the general perception that Pakistan is a dangerous nation dominated by terrorism.

“Travelers think that a visa sponsorship is a very small thing to do, but on the contrary, it’s a big responsibility to me,” says Syed Hamza Mobeen, better known as Shah, the Lahore-born co-founder of Karakoram Bikers. “If anything happens to that person, the government will come to me first. Also, it’s not legal to issue an invitation letter to someone who’s not with you on a tour.”

“In 2014, I went off to Skardu and the Deosai National Park with 10 other bikers,” remembers Shah. “And in 2015, we followed up with another two-week trip through Swat Valley, Gilgit, Skardu, Deosai and back to Lahore.” He first fell in love with the Karakoram mountains 20 years ago on a Boy Scout outing to a local hill station. In 2012, Shah backpacked to the fabled Hunza Valley, ever mindful of the beauty of Pakistan’s northern regions.

After every trip, Shah and his gang were excited to share their pictures and videos with the world. “There’s a very popular Indian Facebook group called The Himalayan Club,” says Shah. “It felt natural to post photos of our mountain discoveries. But given the troubled relationship between the two nations, the group’s administrators asked us to stop mentioning Pakistan in our captions and geotags, and ultimately banned us”.

Angered, Shah and two friends decided to create their own page, The Karakoram Club, adding local trekkers, riders and hiking enthusiasts into their fold. The community has grown exponentially into 188,000 active members who share suggestions and insights. Many foreigners with a burning desire to travel to Pakistan began signing up for news too.

“The potential for adventure tourism in Pakistan is enormous,” says Liz Norman, Shah’s Australian wife  and co-founder of Karakoram Bikers. “Those who visit end up loving Pakistan, and us, as we make it very easy for them to come here.” The couple met online, where Shah saw some of Liz’s posts about her motorbike trip to Ladakh in India. He invited her to experience the beauty of the Karakoram mountains on two wheels.

As they stood awe-struck before the Passu Cones, a sheer wall of cathedral-like rock formations in the northern stretch of Hunza, they agreed that such beauty couldn’t remain hidden from the rest of the world. And Karakoram Bikers was born.

Tabish’s claims aren’t just anecdotal either. According to the South Asia Terrorism Portal, civilian deaths as a result of terrorist attacks in Pakistan peaked in 2013 and have gradually declined in the years since, with fewer in 2017 than at any time since 2005.

In my 31 days scooting around the country, I found hospitable people, decent infrastructure, attractive—if empty—guesthouses, and some of the most jovial police and army officers I’d ever encountered. All told, it was also far less hassle to travel through than neighboring India. Security measures for foreign visitors are certainly tight—I was given an armed escort in several areas near the Afghan border—and for good reason, but I also had an army lieutenant treat me to a hot chai and cookies during passport control.

RELATED: Why we should travel to ‘dangerous’ places

By bringing tourists in, Karakoram Bikers also helps the locals make a source of livelihood. Without the higher-spending international guests who need English-speaking guides, porters and drivers, many of the young villagers in the rural areas are forced to leave their homes and families behind. Jobs are a 16-hour-plus bus ride south to Islamabad, a place ripe with Chinese investment. Others move four hours further south, to Lahore.

“If we sell a multi-day tour for $ 1,000, 80 per cent of that is re-invested into hiring local drivers, booking locally owned hotels, and eating at local restaurants,” explains Shah. “We retain 20 per cent and the rest goes back into the local communities.”

July 25, 2018

Deep in Pakistan’s Karakoram range, a fast-dwindling group of women tend to enormous herds of sheep, goats and yaks. Photographer Camille Delbos paid them a visit—a feat that involved a three-day drive and a 10-day hike.

Shimshal is an isolated village in a remote valley in northern Pakistan, and it’s not easily accessible. To reach Shimshal from Islamabad, it took me three days on the Karakoram Highway, more than seven identity checkpoints, many shared minibuses, and a puncture.

That’s a lot of effort to reach a place in which I don’t really know what to expect. But as the minibus hums along, and despite having to risk tumbling into the ravine to witness it, the stunning scenery from the gorges and the track—which is almost narrower than the wheels of the bus in places—gives me confidence in what lies ahead.

Fake news: Russia dog execution image actually shot in Pakistan (PHOTO) https://briefnews.eu/fake-news-russia-dog-execution-image-actually-shot-in-pakistan-photo/ https://briefnews.eu/fake-news-russia-dog-execution-image-actually-shot-in-pakistan-photo/#respond Mon, 18 Jun 2018 09:08:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fake-news-russia-dog-execution-image-actually-shot-in-pakistan-photo/

A picture circulating online of an alleged dog cull in Russia actually depicts Pakistan, during an attempt to reduce the number of stray animals on the streets of Karachi in 2016.

Ahead of the World Cup there were fears that Russia would try to exterminate stray dogs in time for the arrival of fans. However, Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko said that the animals would be captured and placed in shelters.

A Twitter user has now posted an image that purports to show scores of dogs lying dead in a street somewhere in Russia. But while the picture does show more than 50 dead dogs, it was actually taken two years ago in Pakistan.

Another Twitter user by the name of Fabio also hit out at use of the Pakistan picture which was used in a Reuters article in 2016. The story in question revealed how more than 700 dogs in Karachi had been tracked and poisoned over the course of a few days.

“The picture you used is indeed the illustration of a crime in my honest opinion, but it is not from Russia,” they said.
