This article contains spoilers for “House of the Dragon” episode five and “Game of Thrones.”

Most couples on “Game of Thrones” and its prequel series, “House of the Dragon,” are pretty much doomed from the start. Life in Westeros is hard, even for its most rich and powerful, and marriages are rarely a matter of love. For Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) and Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate), marriage is entirely political. They will unite two ancient houses and help cement political alliances, forging a new path forward with their offspring. Both of them a bit hesitant to wed because they already have romantic interests, but are able to come to an agreement that should satisfy everyone. They’re surprisingly progressive in a frequently backwards world, opting for a secret open marriage that will allow Laenor to express his true feelings for the Knight of Kisses, Joffrey (Solly McLeod), while Rhaenyra can continue her tryst with Ser Cole (Fabien Frankel).

The duo reminded me of another ill-fated pair from “Game of Thrones”: Renly Baratheon (Gethin Anthony) and Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer). Like Laenor, Renly was a gay man who was expected to wed a woman and beget heirs, and like Rhaenyra, Margaery was more than willing to find ways to ensure everyone could have their cake and eat it too. Unfortunately, Westeros is an awful place and love never wins, but you have to give them all points for trying.

King And Queen Of My Heart

Renly and Margaery were a delightful juxtaposition to some of the other couples on “Game of Thrones.” Almost every married pair kept secrets from one another, whether it was Cersei’s (Lena Headey) keeping her affairs with her brother a secret from the King or Ned Stark (Sean Bean) keeping the true nature of Jon Snow’s (Kit Harrington) parentage from his wife, but Renly and Margaery were pretty open and honest with one another. Margaery knew that Renly was in love with her brother, Loras (Finn Jones), and went out of her way to try and reassure Renly that she didn’t mind as long as he helped her produce heirs. Others weren’t as accepting of Renly, and there were plenty of tiny japes at his expense because of his sexuality, because homophobia is alive and well in Westeros. Eventually Renly met a tragic end because of his brother Stannis and Margaery goes on to take part in one of the franchise’s many tragic weddings, but for a brief period they looked like a potential progressive future for the Seven Kingdoms.

There was no real love between Renly and Margaery, at least not in the romantic or sexual sense, but they had one thing most of the other couples in the franchise sorely lack: mutual respect. While “House of the Dragon” is focusing on the feminine perspective, that doesn’t remove the rotten marriages. Alicent (Emily Carey) is basically a caretaker and baby maker for King Viserys (Paddy Considine), for example, while Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) only ever used his wife to gain a bit of property. Thankfully, Rhaenyra and Laenor have at least unique couple to look up to: Laenor’s parents, Corlys and Rhaenys Velarion (Steve Toussaint and Eve Best).

A Potentially Problematic Proposition

While figuring out the nature of their betrothal, Rhaenyra suggests to Laenor that they can have extramarital affairs as long as they make plenty of babies for the line of succession. She, like Margaery, doesn’t really mind that he’s more interested in other men, and she would rather be with Ser Cole or even her uncle Daemon (Matt Smith) anyway. There are some potential concerns down the line, as that Old Valyrian blood is strong, and people might ask questions if potential heirs don’t look like both parents, but if Cersei Lannister managed to keep her three incest children off the chopping block for as long as she did despite them looking like little clones of herself and her twin, then maybe people in Westeros don’t understand genetics all that well.

Either way, the way the two talk with one another shows the same kind of mutual care and respect that Laenor’s parents have for each other, and it would do the both of them a lot of good to continue mirroring that pair. Their progressive, potentially lovely plan was unfortunately undone by Ser Cole’s murderous display at the wedding, and they’re going to need to learn to lean on each other if they’re going to survive a future together in King’s Landing.

Perhaps It’s Time For A Change Of Location

While I understand the inclination to continue to tell stories in Westeros, especially this one, because it’s based on history but adds dragon battles, maybe it’s time for a change of location for the franchise. Westeros is basically the Alabama of author George R.R. Martin’s world, where homophobia, misogyny, and incest run rampant, but there are plenty of other great, unexplored locations that deserve their own shot. After all, I love a gritty fantasy series with lots of sex and violence, but the regular inclusion of bigotry is a reminder of real-world misery that I would rather leave behind. While there is a series planned about Nymeria, who united Dorne, there should be a series about later-era Dorne, when it’s a beacon of knowledge, progressive ideals, and great wine. There’s still plenty of backstabbing, secrets, and political posturing in Dorne, but people aren’t condemned for their sexuality and bastards are given the same rights as children born in wedlock. Oh, and women have significantly more rights. Dorne kind of rules, and it’s a shame that we’ve barely seen any of it.

Similarly, there are the Summer Isles, which are described as being almost utopian, and other cultures even the books have yet to explore. Maybe it’s time to leave Westeros behind, or at the very least, take a little vacation to somewhere more enlightened.

Google’s fast Bluetooth pairing feature works across multiple devices https://briefnews.eu/googles-fast-bluetooth-pairing-feature-works-across-multiple-devices/ https://briefnews.eu/googles-fast-bluetooth-pairing-feature-works-across-multiple-devices/#respond Wed, 28 Nov 2018 04:55:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/googles-fast-bluetooth-pairing-feature-works-across-multiple-devices/

Google is updating its Fast Pair feature on Android and Chromebooks to let you simultaneously pair compatible Bluetooth devices with phones, tablets and laptops that share the same Google account. When you link your headphones (for instance) with one product, all the devices you’ve connected to that account will automatically pair with your cans.

It seems to work in a similar way to AirPods, which let you hop easily between Apple machines without needing to pair them again — as long your iOS, watchOS and Mac OS systems are connected to the same iCloud account. Also like AirPods, compatible Bluetooth devices can pair with your Android products or Chromebooks simply by placing them in close proximity.

It’s a welcome update (not least because headphone jacks are fast becoming an endangered species), particularly for those who are invested in Google’s ecosystem and have several Android gizmos and/or Chromebooks. The update is rolling out on devices running Android 6.0 and above, and it will be available on Chromebooks next year.

Action-Packed ‘Cloak and Dagger’ Trailer Shows Off Marvel’s Latest Divine Pairing https://briefnews.eu/action-packed-cloak-and-dagger-trailer-shows-off-marvels-latest-divine-pairing/ https://briefnews.eu/action-packed-cloak-and-dagger-trailer-shows-off-marvels-latest-divine-pairing/#respond Mon, 30 Apr 2018 19:59:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/action-packed-cloak-and-dagger-trailer-shows-off-marvels-latest-divine-pairing/ extended Cloak and Dagger trailer

While all eyes are on Marvel Studios and Avengers: Infinity War right now, Marvel Television is about to launch a brand new TV show with Cloak & Dagger. Freeform has debuted a final trailer for the series, and it proves that this isn’t just going to be another teen soap opera – this thing has some kick to it, too. Check out the extended Cloak and Dagger trailer below.

Cloak and Dagger Trailer

OK, so Cloak and Dagger definitely is a teen soap opera. That’s Freeform’s bread and butter. But as this trailer reveals, there’s some serious ass-kicking in store as well. This is by far my favorite trailer they’ve released thus far: it’s got some Aladdin vibes in the very beginning with the street rat duo of Cloak (Aubrey Joseph) and Dagger (Olivia Holt), and I’m really digging the cover of “House of the Rising Sun” they’ve been leaning on for this campaign. Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, Sony’s upcoming superhero film Silver & Black) directed the pilot, and it looks like she delivered.

/Film contributor Meredith Borders saw a sneak peek of the show’s pilot at the SXSW Film Festival in March, and after just the first hour of what will be a two-hour episode, she said “it’s clear that it’ll be among the upper echelon of Marvel television.” Here’s a quick excerpt from her review:

The [show] looks great, too. It’s much richer and more textured than a lot of these superhero shows (and, for that matter, than most Freeform shows). As Tandy and Tyrone begin to discover their powers (for Cloak, that means the ability to teleport himself through the Darkforce dimension, and for Dagger, the ability to create daggers of light), they manifest in a really visually organic way, miles from the corny effects that most of superhero television delivers. The move from New York to New Orleans is smart, as there’s an earthy, soulful feel to Cloak & Dagger. New Orleans has such a dramatic history, and the locale sets the series apart from the many superhero shows that take place in New York (and are mainly filmed in Vancouver).

Andrea Roth, Gloria Reuben, Miles Mussenden, Carl Lundstedt, Emma Lahana, Jaime Zevallos, and J.D. Evermore co-star. Check out the official synopsis below:

“Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” is the story of Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) – two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers which are mysteriously linked to one another. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.

Cloak & Dagger premieres on June 7, 2018.

AI4All, created by Google Cloud’s Fei-Fei Li, is pairing tech workers and high school students on AI projects https://briefnews.eu/ai4all-created-by-google-clouds-fei-fei-li-is-pairing-tech-workers-and-high-school-students-on-ai-projects/ https://briefnews.eu/ai4all-created-by-google-clouds-fei-fei-li-is-pairing-tech-workers-and-high-school-students-on-ai-projects/#respond Sat, 03 Feb 2018 16:00:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ai4all-created-by-google-clouds-fei-fei-li-is-pairing-tech-workers-and-high-school-students-on-ai-projects/

AI4All, an organization created by tech leaders like Melinda Gates and Nvidia founder Jensen Huang, launches its first-ever mentorship program today at Oakstop, a coworking space in Oakland, California.

The program will join tech workers from companies like Salesforce, IBM, and Accenture with high school students underrepresented in AI to work on projects that apply machine learning to solve problems for the benefit of humanity.

AI4All was established by a group that includes Fei-Fei Li, Google Cloud chief scientist and director of Stanford’s AI Lab and Vision Lab, whose passion for democratization of AI was made a central part of the launch of Google’s second-generation tensor processing unit.

Over the course of the next three months, students and tech workers will explore things like

  • NLP to detect the need for an ambulance for emergency phone calls
  • Computer vision to improve disaster relief based on images captured by drones
  • Computer vision to track deforestation around the world from satellite imagery
  • Use music classification algorithms to classify music by genre to introduce people to music from different cultures
  • Use reinforcement learning to create personalized math programs that asks questions based on previous performance

The program will culminate with the teams making their presentations to a panel of experts, including Li.

The new mentorship program launches days after AI4All began its first initiatives outside of the San Francisco Bay Area. AI4All summer camps for high school students began last year at UC Berkeley and Stanford. Earlier this week the camps expanded to Carnegie Mellon University, Princeton University, Boston University, and Simon Fraser University in Canada, AI4All’s first partner outside the United States.

The mentorship program that starts today is a pilot program that begins in the San Francisco Bay Area, director Tess Posner told VentureBeat, but the goal is to expand to other parts of the United States and potentially other countries in the future.

“Everything is kind of early stage, but we definitely see this turning into real projects, and we’re already in talks with several places to potentially turn this into work that would be done either with researchers in academia or with tech companies,” Posner said. “We’re trying to build the infrastructure and learnings to be able to do that successfully across the country.”

AI4All caters to students who are underrepresented in AI, such as girls, African American or Latino students, or kids from a low-income background. Students taking part in the mentorship program participated in last year’s summer camp program.

The goal of AI4All is to inspire more young people to pursue jobs in AI in order to increase diversity in AI and offset evidence around bias and discrimination being embedded in machine learning algorithms. Alumni are supported with ongoing education, grants to start their own outreach programs, and internship opportunities.

Teen Wolf Boss Talks Scott and Malia's 'Unexpected' Pairing: 'I Was Hesitant' https://briefnews.eu/teen-wolf-boss-talks-scott-and-malias-unexpected-pairing-i-was-hesitant/ https://briefnews.eu/teen-wolf-boss-talks-scott-and-malias-unexpected-pairing-i-was-hesitant/#respond Mon, 14 Aug 2017 15:27:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/teen-wolf-boss-talks-scott-and-malias-unexpected-pairing-i-was-hesitant/

After Sunday’s Teen Wolf, there’s no point denying it anymore: “Scalia” is happening.

Even if we hadn’t already seen footage of Tyler Posey and Shelley Hennig’s characters sharing a shower in the trailer for Season 6B, it was impossible to overlook the brief spark they ignited towards the end of Sunday’s episode, laying the groundwork for something more.

During a tense moment, while Malia was attempting to take away Scott’s pain, he assured her that Stiles (aka her ex-boyfriend and his best friend) would be OK with them. Unfortunately, he passed out before he got a chance to explain what he meant by that.

“I was hesitant to do it at first,” executive producer Jeff Davis admits to TVLine. “We actually tested the waters between them in a scene in Episode 609. [Tyler and Shelley] were both up for the challenge.”

Davis knows there will be fans who oppose the new ‘ship, perhaps wishing that Scott and Malia could each reconnect with characters they’ve previously dated. To that, he says:

“The idea of there being one true love for everyone is nice, but it’s not realistic. Things happen in life that bring people together in unexpected ways. We’re big fans of going for the unexpected.”

What say you, Teen Wolf fans? Are you excited to see where things go between Scott and Malia? Drop your thoughts in a comment below.

Shadowhunters' Newest 'Ship: Is It a Perfect Pairing or a Major Mistake? https://briefnews.eu/shadowhunters-newest-ship-is-it-a-perfect-pairing-or-a-major-mistake/ https://briefnews.eu/shadowhunters-newest-ship-is-it-a-perfect-pairing-or-a-major-mistake/#respond Tue, 20 Jun 2017 01:30:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/shadowhunters-newest-ship-is-it-a-perfect-pairing-or-a-major-mistake/

Warning: This article contains spoilers of a most sexy nature from Monday’s Shadowhunters. If you haven’t watched, return from whence you came.

The final minutes of Monday’s Shadowhunters introduced a curious new pairing — and we have a feeling you might have some feelings about their feelings. You feel?

Jace and Maia, having spent most of the hour at each other’s throats as they clashed over the Inquisitor’s new arrest-innocent-Downworlders policy, ended the hour at each other’s… well, it’s not clear how far they went, but if you’re willing to start undressing in the middle of a back alley, there’s a good chance you’re willing to do a lot more.

So, let’s talk: How do we feel about this naughty turn of events? My gut tells me that Maia and Jace are just sort of “helping” each other while they wait for the true objects of their affection — aka Simon and Clary, respectively — to become available. But is any relationship ever that simple on this show? Did Maia really mean it when she told Jace that their encounter doesn’t mean anything, or was she also lying to herself?

And if they are just helping each other out through times of loneliness, how do we think Clary and Simon will feel about that? I’m genuinely unsure how I should be processing this, so please drop a comment with your take below.

Elsewhere this week…

* Jace was appointed the new head of the New York Institute, a title he almost immediately passed along to Alec.

* A bottle of whisky and a night of reminiscing with Dot nearly led Magnus into temptation, but he was delivered from cheating by his feelings for Alec: “I’ve always been a one-soul-at-a-time kind of guy.” (In other news, can we get a flashback from Magnus’ sexy times with Freddie Mercury?!)

* Simon’s daylighting ability has turned him into something of a vampire rockstar; he’s not into the idea of being a leader, but he doesn’t mind the affect its having on attendance at his concerts.

Lewis Hamilton v Valtteri Bottas: Toto Wolff opens up on his new Mercedes pairing https://briefnews.eu/lewis-hamilton-v-valtteri-bottas-toto-wolff-opens-up-on-his-new-mercedes-pairing/ https://briefnews.eu/lewis-hamilton-v-valtteri-bottas-toto-wolff-opens-up-on-his-new-mercedes-pairing/#respond Thu, 23 Feb 2017 15:55:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lewis-hamilton-v-valtteri-bottas-toto-wolff-opens-up-on-his-new-mercedes-pairing/

Nico Rosberg ended a tempestuous four seasons alongside by retiring five days after beating his Mercedes team-mate to the world title.

His team had to scramble to find a replacement and eventually convinced Valtteri Bottas to complete a switch from Williams last month.

And Wolff, speaking at the launch of the new Mercedes car for 2017, believes that freedom from the difficulties with Rosberg has left Hamilton reinvigorated.

“He has closed the chapter of last year it seems and his work with the team has been exceptional,” Wolff said.

“He seems to be in a very good place.

“I think it’s the opportunity of having a new team-mate.

“Some of the dynamics change.

“My impression is a positive one.

“Lewis has been with the team now four years.

“The longer you work with them, the better you get to know each other and the way I’ve seen him in the last few weeks, he’s been in a great mood and great spirits.”

Hamilton is chasing a fourth World Drivers’ Championship but refused to set that as his goal for 2017 without have driven the car in anger.

But the Brit did accept that he was in a better place mentally to deal with the challenge of Bottas, who has not been shy about his desire to push Hamilton to the limit.

“I’m feeling in a positive place with the team – we talked about a lot of stuff over the winter, I was able to get some things off my chest and now we are communicating better than ever and continuing to grow together,” Hamilton said.

“I’m the best equipped I ever have been to work with my team-mate and manage the relationship with my experience and maturity.”

However, Hamilton did also admit that since Bottas signed for the team last month, the pair have not had much interaction.

“I don’t know him that well,” Hamilton added.

“Before he signed, we’d bumped into each other round the paddock and had little chats, but that’s been it really.

“When I saw him in the factory it was only the third time I’d really seen him.”
