To date, 23andMe’s Ancestry Composition report could trace your genetic roots back to 31 populations. That’s decent, but not exactly the most accurate representation of your lineage. It could soon be more accurate, however. The company is updating its methods to trace ancestry back to 120 more populations, for a total of 151. If you have uncommon origins, you might have a better chance of discovering them.
It manages the feat by checking for exact DNA matches between you and over 130,000 people with known ancestry in those 120 new regions. If you match at least five people from a region, that’s deemed to be one of your recent ancestor locations. The company will also tell you the strength of a match based on the amount of DNA you share with people from a given area.
This will help right away if you’re taking the 23andMe test for the first time, although it’ll roll out to existing customers over the “coming months.” There are also some tweaks to accompany the more comprehensive data. The company has relabeled some regions for better accuracy (“Yakut” is now “Siberian,” for instance), and has improved the map to help you zoom into a given region. You might not get any mind-blowing revelations about your genes — this can only be so precise — but it won’t hurt to come back and see if there are any new insights.

]]>In many ways, this is a surprising news peg (Hulu?!) for an unsurprising story (the rise of streaming television). Hulu is a distant third behind Netflix and Amazon in the streaming wars, which makes last night’s underdog achievement impressive. But it was only a matter of time before a streaming company took home an award for best series. Netflix has been nominated for top drama or comedy several times—for House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Master of None, and Amazon has earned several nods for Transparent.
Meanwhile, the growth of prestige television on streaming services is part of the long term decline of critical darlings on broadcast television (NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox). The last broadcast production to win the Emmy for top drama was 24, on Fox, in 2006. While comedies like 30 Rock (NBC) and Modern Family (ABC) have thrived at the Emmy’s in the last decade, HBO’s Veep has won the last three awards for best comedy series. Critically acclaimed shows aren’t the only thing in decline on broadcast television. Everything else is, too. Out of 78 primetime broadcast series that aired in both 2016 and 2017, only one— ABC’s The Bachelor— increased its viewership among people under 50.
So, what exactly is the larger significance of Hulu’s win?
As a first-order effect, one should expect Hulu to spend more money on prestige dramas and other expensive shows. Hulu senior vice president Craig Erwich told New York Magazine that he wanted to use The Handmaid’s Tale—“the most-viewed launch of a show in [Hulu’s] history”—to build the network’s roster of dramas. “If you look at the history of entertainment, often there can be a show that defines a service, but it does not itself make the service,” he said. “Because you have to continue to follow up.”
Hulu’s redoubled attempts to pad their roster will create even more competition in the crowded market for prestige drama, adding to what is already a glut of cinematic television. A superabundance of expensive television shows is good news for streaming networks that are supported by subscriptions, since each new show offers another reason for unconvinced viewers to sign up for the service. But it’s bad news for networks that are supported by advertising, since more shows divided by a stable population means fewer viewers per show. Prestigious awards alone might not cause viewers to cut the cord. But if they contribute to a growing sense that most must-see television is on streaming services, it weakens the pay-TV product and encourages future cord-cutters.
There’s also a notable demographic split: Americans over 65, who broke for Trump by an 8 point margin, are watching more traditional television than ever. Americans under 30, who voted for Clinton by an 18-point margin, have reduced their traditional television viewing time by 50 percent since the Great Recession. And the divide showed at Sunday’s Emmy’s. The show wasn’t just a historic moment for these streaming services. It was also an extended roasting of President Trump, from Stephen Colbert’s monologue, to Sean Spicer’s appearance, to many, many presentations and thank-you speeches that skewered the president. In an age of hyper-polarization, Americans can’t even share television anymore.

I’ve frequently wondered what Mr. Robot would look like in a post-Trump world. The nihilistic, anarchist viewpoint of the series seemed overly cynical when it first hit USA Network’s airwaves in the summer of 2015, giving a fantastical update to the grim, solipsistic anger of ’90s male fantasies like Fight Club.
But what once seemed out of place now seems both prophetic and misguided, especially in the Season 3 trailer of Mr. Robot that emphasizes the economic and technological warfare that Elliot and Mr. Robot are engaging in. But the trailer is riveting and intense, bringing back some of the ambitious momentum that first launched Mr. Robot into the pop culture zeitgeist in its first season.
Rami Malek brings back his wide-eyed, quivering performance as Elliot, who we last shot down by uneasy accomplice Tyrell Wellick (Martin Wallström). The Season 3 trailer seems to pick up immediately, with Tyrell sobbing that he was forced to shoot Elliot to stop him from sabotaging their elaborate plan against E. Corp, telling Elliot’s sister Darlene (Carly Chaikin), “It was almost as if he were a different person.”
We soon see that Elliot has recovered from the gunshot wound, but the nightmare is far from over. Chinese hacking syndicate The Dark Army has turned on Mr. Robot’s f.society, and the FBI is closing in on the both groups. But most importantly, Elliot continues his battle against his alter ego, Mr. Robot, who becomes more menacing by the minute, warning Elliot against “cutting the chord.”
Beeps and ominous strings escalate throughout the intense trailer for Mr. Robot Season 3 as we see flashes of all the familiar characters, picking up the shambles of the society that they threw into chaos for the past two seasons. But it seems like the only one profiting from this is E. Corp boss Philip Price (Michael Cristofer), who ominously declares, “World catastrophes like this, they occur because men like me allow them.”
It’s a promising trailer after Season 2 slowed things down to an infuriating level, despite its ambitious subplots. With the added importance of Philip Price’s Big Bad, I look forward to how, or if, Mr. Robot addresses the realities of a post-Trump world, or if it will maintain its separate, paranoid reality.
At least we get to see Bobby Cavanale in a mustache.
Mr. Robot Season 3 premieres Wednesday, October 11 at 10/9c on USA.

There’s widespread agreement that bees around the world are in trouble. A few years back, domestic honey bee nests started experiencing mass die offs, and problems were found in wild bees as well. What’s hasn’t been clear is what the cause might be. Viruses, fungi, and pesticides have all been floated as possible causes, but definitive evidence has been hard to come by; a number of scientists have suggested that there might be multiple contributing factors.
Nevertheless, suspicions focused on a specific class of insecticides called neonicotinoids. The EU has already placed restrictions on their use, and it’s considering a near-total ban.
If you read the headlines this week, it would appear that a new study completely justifies that decision. Funded in part by two insecticide manufacturers, a team of independent researchers purportedly tied neonicotinoids to bee colony health. But a quick look at the underlying data shows that the situation is far more complex. And a second paper, with more robust results, supports the idea that these insecticides are merely one of a number of factors contributing to bees’ problems.
]]>Sixteen years after the US-led invasion aimed at overthrowing the Taliban and denying a safe haven to Al-Qaeda – the group blamed for 9/11 terrorist attacks – Afghanistan is facing a “continuing threat” from as many as 20 insurgent and terrorist networks, in what the US Department of Defense called “the highest concentration of extremist and terrorist groups in the world.”
That is one of the assessments in the just-released “Enhancing Security and Stability in Afghanistan,” covering US efforts between December 1, 2016 and May 31 of this year. The semi-annual report is required under the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
16 years into war in Afghanistan, Pentagon says in new report that 2017 is “a year of setting conditions to build momentum” @ForeignPolicy
— paul mcleary (@paulmcleary) June 20, 2017
“The US and Afghan Governments agree that the best way to ensure lasting peace and security in Afghanistan is through reconciliation and a political settlement with the Taliban,” the report says.
While no measure of territorial control is given, the Pentagon says that as of February 2017, the Taliban exercised influence or control over 11 percent of the Afghan population, the government could claim 65 percent, and the rest was “contested.”
Though the Taliban achieved only “limited successes,” it presented them as strategic victories “through the proficient use of social media and propaganda campaigns.”
The Afghan National Army (ANA) is approximately 20,000 strong under the authorized level of 195,000 troops. It is “generally capable of protecting major population centers, preventing the Taliban from maintaining prolonged control of specific areas, and responding to Taliban attacks,” the report states.
President Mohammed Ashraf Ghani’s government is seeking to double the size of Special Forces in order to take the battle to the enemy, while relying on local militias – called the National Uprising Forces – to provide security in rural areas.
However, “these groups have limited accountability and a disregard for human rights, and they can exacerbate tribal and ethnic tensions if not properly monitored,” the Pentagon concluded.
“The plan to modify the force structure and develop into a more agile and lethal force is underway, but 2017 is a year of setting conditions to build momentum,” the report said.
Afghanistan’s armed forces are funded primarily through the Pentagon’s Afghanistan Security Forces Fund (ASFF), which in the fiscal year 2017 amounted to $ 4.26 billion. President Donald Trump’s 2018 budget request would see the funding increased to $ 4.937 billion. NATO allies have pledged approximately $ 900 million a year through 2020, while the Afghan government remains committed to spending roughly $ 500 million a year.
Over $ 800 million is earmarked for “transitioning the Afghan aviation fleet” away from Soviet-designed Mi-17 utility helicopters to US-made Blackhawks.
The Afghan Air Force began to operate its own bombers for the first time in 2016, using the Brazilian A-29 Super Tucano turboprop attack planes. There are currently 12 A-29s in service, with another seven scheduled for delivery in 2018.
The report was more optimistic about the efforts against Al-Qaeda and Islamic State’s Khorasan group (ISIS-K), which have lost territory and are focusing on survival. At its peak, ISIS-K had a presence in six provinces, but is currently confined to “four districts in Nangarhar Province.”
Casualty figures paint a grim picture, however. In the six months covered by this report, there were 4,806 “effective enemy-initiated attacks” or 801 per month, compared to 4,727 – or 788 a month – in the previous reporting period. Five American soldiers were killed and 36 wounded. There were also 38 attacks on Afghan forces by their own members, known as “green-on-green.”
NATO’s Civilian Casualty Mitigation Team documented more than 3,600 civilian casualties, of which approximately a third were deaths and two thirds were injuries. This was a 32.7 percent increase compared to the same period a year ago. The report also included figures by the UN mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), according to which some 715 civilians were killed and 1,466 were wounded between January and May 2017.
As of May 31, a total of 1,865 US military personnel have been killed in action and 20,272 have been wounded since the US invaded Afghanistan in October 2001.
The US currently has 8,400 troops in the country, conducting both the “training, advising and assisting” of Afghan security forces and counterterrorism operations against ISIS-K, Al-Qaeda, and other terrorist groups. The report did not mention a need for additional troops.
The estimated cost of the report was $ 225,000.

Pal Volner, State Secretary at the Hungarian Justice Ministry, said in a statement the report was an attempt by Brussels to put pressure on the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) ahead of the upcoming proceedings, in which Hungary, Slovakia and Poland will be trying to overturn the migrant quota mechanism.
The statements “grossly violate” the court’s independence and are designed to “entice” it “into the migrant business,” Volner said.
The rebuke apparently came in response to an article that appeared by The Times on Tuesday, in which the newspaper cited a senior diplomatic source from one of the EU founding members saying that the bloc’s leading members, France and Germany, as well as up to 21 other countries, are poised to declare an ultimatum to Hungary and Poland.
“They will have to make a choice: are they in the European system or not? You cannot blackmail the EU, unity has a price,” the diplomatic source told the Times, speaking about the staunch opposition to the scheme approved by the bloc in late 2015.
According to the source, there is little doubt that the court will reaffirm the legality of the quota scheme, thus siding with the founding members and the majority of the bloc. The court is set to start hearing the case in May and is expected to deliver the verdict by next year.
“No more opt-outs. There is no more ‘one foot in and one foot out,” it stressed.
Although the petition against the quota system was filed jointly by Budapest and Bratislava, there was no mention of Slovakia in the report, which led to Volner to suspect an EU bias against Hungary and Poland. The recent bid by Austria to withdraw from the scheme also was not covered in the piece, he noted.
Volner claimed that such selectiveness shows the bloc is trying to apply political pressure on Hungary and Poland in particular.
“Brussels leaders trying to play it tough treat Hungary as a miscreant and want to send it off to the “sin bin,” he said.
Earlier, Poland took a similar stance towards the report, with Warsaw’s foreign minister, Witold Waszczykowski, arguing that Poland has been sharing the migrant burden on a par with other EU countries, citing 1.26 million visa applications by Ukrainians approved by the Polish authorities last year, with half of them enabling arrivals to work and live in Poland.
“That should end the discussion. Poland is a country that is also exposed to a great wave of migration,” Waszczykowski told journalists, speaking in Strasbourg on Tuesday.
He added he “doesn’t see” any possibility of Poland’s being penalized for denying refugees, referring to possible financial sanctions touted by the source in the report.
The Hungarian authorities have been long waging a vocal campaign against what they see as Brussels’ overreaching influence on internal state affairs, especially in the realm of migration policy. Since the refugee crisis hit Europe in 2015, Hungary’s controversial policies, such as constructing a wire fence on its border with Serbia and Croatia, and green-lighting the automatic detention of all asylum-seekers at border camps, have come under intense scrutiny.
Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban is known for sharp criticism of EU migration policy and the nature of the migrant crisis.
“Migration is the Trojan wooden horse of terrorism,” Orban said in March while introducing reinforcement to border patrols, labeled “border hunters,” adding that his country is “still, at this moment, under siege.”
Last week, Hungary launched a campaign, asking citizens “what Hungary should do” in a questionnaire dubbed “Let’s stop Brussels.” Among the points to which the Hungarians are to provide their opinion, is migration. The respective question asks if “illegal immigration should be kept under supervision until the authorities decide in their cases” or “we should allow illegal immigrants to move freely in Hungary.” It also said that “Brussels wants to force Hungary to let in illegal immigrants” despite a recent wave of terrorist attacks that have shaken Europe.

Photography is one way to start a fight. Exhibit A: a black-and-white photo of a woman with “Fuck You Governor Herbert” painted across her nude body. She holds up a middle finger over her vagina.
Cat Palmer, the woman behind the camera, posted the image to social media. Droves of women tagged Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, a conservative Republican, until, Palmer claims, someone from his social media team blocked her account. (Herbert’s camp says the photo violated Facebook’s policies and that they never blocked Palmer.)
Palmer, a self-described “photographer, provocateur and activist,” doesn’t back down in a fight, even when she’s clearly David to the government’s Goliath. Her work thumbs its nose at gender inequality and religious hypocrisies as much as it celebrates the act of free expression. She has parodied the Last Supper, photographed numerous women with shaved heads and shot nude women with statements painted on their bodies about how — radical concept — they should get to make decisions about those bodies. In short, Palmer has shaken up Utah’s art scene, exhibiting at Planned Parenthood and winning accolades such as best feminist of the year. “Cat’s been really visible, forging her own path in the state,” says art critic Scotti Hill.
You let her leave the house looking like that?
With dyed hair and a tat of the Salt Lake City skyline on her left leg, the petite 37-year-old doesn’t look like a former Mormon. When Palmer was growing up in Southern California, her family was religious. Her mom married at 16 and had her soon after. Palmer ended up moving in with her grandparents, opting for hot-pink dreadlocks and vintage dresses paired with Chucks rather than somber, pressed white shirts and black pants. She picked up a camera at age 15 and started photographing local up-and-coming bands. “People would say things about me to [my grandparents]. You know: ‘You let her leave the house looking like that?’ ” Her grandparents’ response? “So what? She’s not hurting anybody.” All the while, Palmer regularly attended church services (her grandmother was a prominent member of the chapter).

In 2006, though, the presidency of George W. Bush helped change Palmer’s worldview and, she says, “fueled a lot of my art.” Palmer slowed down the pretty-picture-taking and started taking photos that emphasized powerful women and the resistance to norms. Soon, she found it hard to explain her work to her community. Just imagine the scene when her elderly neighbor and assigned visiting teacher from the Mormon church heard about what Palmer had been up to one particular day: “I was photographing three sisters with gas masks on with writing all over their bodies in front of bombs.” As might be expected, the conversation didn’t go over well, and Palmer left the church soon after. (The neighbors eventually patched things up.)
The art scene in Utah is evolving. It’s becoming more progressive, more varied, and collectors are responding.
Diane Stewart, gallery owner
Only half the residents of Salt Lake County are Mormon, compared with some 60-plus percent across the state, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. This divide crosses over into politics too. Salt Lake County was one of only two counties, out of 29, to go blue this past election and fuels the Democratic seats in the state Legislature. Salt Lake City is decidedly more progressive than the rest of Utah, with residents electing an openly gay mayor in 2015. As Salt Lake City continues to grow, some of its residents are increasingly influencing art across the state. “The art scene in Utah is evolving,” says gallery owner Diane Stewart. “It’s becoming more progressive, more varied, and collectors are responding.”

In the past, some community members would disapprove of certain art, with the result being few people willing to support the work. One influencer in particular — former Brigham Young University curator Jeff Lambson — put provocative contemporary art front and center and helped “move the needle in Utah,” Stewart says. Palmer, who has experienced some pushback, still has a lot to protest — including Utah’s major gender pay gap, the fact that only a few women hold seats in government and the controversy over whether or not to pull funding for Planned Parenthood. “Because of the repression,” she says, art brings “balance.” Which is why, when Trump was elected president, Palmer moved quickly to launch a photo series, the third installment of “Keep the Politicians Out of Our VAGINA.”
