Ineffective painkillers, costly surgery and MRI scans are dished out too readily when prevention and exercise-led solutions could help people keep functioning and aid recovery, experts say.

A series of papers published in The Lancet lays bare the nation’s growing back pain epidemic and called for a new approach.

Medics warned that all too often patients with back pain are pointlessly being handed painkillers or other interventions that do not work.

Treating the resulting chronic conditions is costing the health service more than £2billion a year.

And the overall cost to society – when days of work lost and informal care are factored in – is an eye-watering £10.7billion.

Professor Nadine Foster of Keele University, lead author of one of the papers, said: “Painkillers that have limited positive effect are routinely prescribed for low back pain, with very little emphasis on evidence-based interventions such as exercises.

“We need to redirect funding away from ineffective or harmful tests and treatments and towards approaches that promote physical activity and function.

“We also need to intensify further research of promising new approaches such as redesigning patient pathways of care and interventions that support people to function and stay at work.”

Co-author Professor Martin Underwood, of Warwick University, said: “Our current treatment approaches are failing to reduce the burden of back pain disability; we need to change the way we approach back pain treatment in the UK.”

Professor Rachelle Buchbinder, of Monash University, Australia, added: “The majority of cases of low back pain respond to simple physical and psychological therapies that keep people active and enable them to stay at work.”

Low back pain affects at least four out of five people at some point in their lives.

About one in five people develops chronic low back pain lasting a year or more.

UK Statistics Authority figures showed that workers aged 25-64 lost about 9.95 million working days due to back pain in 2014.

Welcoming the findings, Steve Tolan, head of practice at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy said: “So many people start out with minor back pain and go on to suffer life-changing consequences.

“This landmark series of articles must prompt some serious reflection among professionals and decision-makers to ensure that when people seek help what they receive is effective, proportionate and, above all, empowering.”

The majority were for chronic and prolonged ailments like back pain, but some say they are ineffective in as many as 90 per cent of cases.

Opioids, mainly fentanyl, oxycodone, tramadol, morphine sulfate, buprenorphine cost £263million a year, NHS Digital figures show, but there is controversy over their “seductive” effect.

The Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan, 46, was feared to have died from a suspected opioid overdose in January and TV presenter Lorraine Kelly, 58, forced herself to come off tramadol after a horse riding accident in 2012.

The drugs have also been linked to the deaths of musicians Prince and Tom Petty. 

Overall, 1.11 billion prescriptions were issued in England last year, a marginal increase on 2016, at a total cost of £9.17billion.

The most prescribed drugs were cholesterolbusting atorvastatin, given out 37 million times, and thyroid medicine levothyroxine sodium, issued 31 million times.

GPs wrote almost 20 million paracetamol prescriptions, costing £61.9million.

Royal College of GPs chairwoman Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard said more prescriptions were inevitable as patients lived longer.

British tourist Laura Plummer, 33, has been jailed for three years after being caught carrying painkillers into the country.

Her conviction, having escaped the death penalty, comes after she was found with 290 Tramadol tablets in her suitcase for her partner Omar Taboo.

She will also have to pay a fine of 100,000 Egyptian pounds (£4,205) as part of her conviction.

Is it still safe for British tourists to travel to Egypt?

Anyone travelling into the country should be aware that certain medication and the amount of medicine can be prohibited.

Those who need it will need to have the correct documentation when entering the country.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) states: “Some prescribed and over the counter medicines that are available in the UK are considered controlled substances in Egypt and can’t be brought into the country without prior permission from Egypt’s Ministry of Health. 

“If you arrive in Egypt without this permission and the required documentation, the medication will not be allowed into the country and you may be prosecuted under Egyptian law.”

The medicine Methadone, which is often prescribed as a substitute for heroin according to the FRANK website, is not allowed into the country at all.

FCO also advise: “If you’re travelling with prescription medication you should carry a medical certificate confirming that the medication has been prescribed for a medical condition. 

“The Egyptian Embassy website states that this should be in the form of an official letter from your GP, specifying details of your condition, the quantity of medication you will be carrying and that the medication is for your personal use only.”

British tourist Plummer previously stated that she was bringing the medicine to her Egyptian partner due to his back problems.

She wept in court yesterday as she was accused of drug smuggling, despite her family stating she was simply ‘naive’.

Britons heading to the country should also be aware of the terror threat in Egypt and the travel advice.

A deadly attack on 24 November in a mosque in Sinai left over 300 people dead following a bomb explosion.

Many were killed in the Al-Rawdah mosque whilst they were praying as well as reports of a gunman outside.

FCO warned that attacks are “very likely” and that tourists should remain vigilante at all times.
