The hugely controversial movie, formerly named Padmavati, has found big box office success in India despite a string of protests that have occasionally turned violent.

However Malaysian censors at the LPF ruled against the movie, reconfirming their stance earlier this week after an appeal.

The chairman said the film “touches on the sensitivities of Islam” and would not allow it to be screened as a result.

Interestingly, as noted by Variety, that’s a very different reason to why it’s stirred so much anger in India: there, it’s over a rumoured scene showing Padmavati romancing a Muslim prince.

Such a scene was nowhere to be seen when the movie eventually hit cinemas.

Deepika Padukone, who plays the lead role, has constantly stood by the production, even after a bounty was put on her head by a far-right politician.

“My parents are immensely proud,” she said, according to the Times of India. 

“I saw that pride on their face. Mom and dad made a video call after their screening finished late at night and I was in my pyjama and going to bed. So for them, they just saw the film and then me… 

“So, their expression was like, ‘Is she our daughter?’ I saw their expression and they were both brimming and glowing with pride.”

Padukone will be familiar to Western audiences after her role in last year’s xXx: Return of Xander Cage, for which she is rumoured to be returning for a sequel.

Padmaavat is out now.

Padukone, who will be familiar with Western audiences for her role in last year’s xXx: Return of Xander Cage, stars in the new film; which has sparked fierce protests – and last year a politician even put a bounty on her head.

Hardline Hindus took severe issue with the film, with reports suggesting cinemas have been targeted with protests and attacks.

The Supreme Court even rejected a bid for it to be banned altogether, amid rumours that the film depicts a scene in which a Muslim king dreams of being intimate with a Hindu queen. The existence of such a scene was denied.

Taking to Twitter, Padukone said she stands by the film despite its controversy – and still refers to it as Padmavati, from when it was named after her own character.

She was responding to a follower who said: “Just watchd @filmpadmaavat I’d still call it Padmavati as its strength lies in the character so beautifully portrayed by @deepikapadukone.

“To me, this was neither history, nor distorted history nor Jayasi’s ‘Padmavat’. It was just a spectacle u expect from Bhansali. #Padmaavat.”

Padukone replied: “Thank You for your very kind words @radhikabhirani !For me too it will always be ‘Padmavati’ & the most significant film of my career in many many ways!”

Reviews for the film have been mixed to positive, with a write-up from The Guardian awarding four stars.

Critics overseas have been more apprehensive: Padukone was called “underwhelming” by the Mumbai Mirror, while others ripped apart the gender dynamics.

It’s an adaptation of the epic poem Padmavat, and controversially includes a portrayal of “jauhar”, in which Padmavati and other women take their own lives by jumping into a fire to escape being captured by the Muslim king.

Padmaavat is out now in India and is showing in select cinemas in the UK.

The Bollywood superstar – recognisable to Western audiences as a star of xXx: Return of Xander Cage – has vowed to “never feel scared”.

She plays the queen Padmini in the movie Padmavati, which is set in the 14th century and features a love scene between her and a Muslim invader.

Right-wing groups have claimed it misrepresents history, which director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has denied.

Still, politician Suraj Pal Amu – chief media co-ordinator for the BJP in northern Haryana state – went on record saying “we will reward the ones beheading them [Padukone and Bhansali]”.

Padukone has remained defiant.

“Well, at this point, as a woman, an artiste and a citizen of this country I feel angry,” she told the Mumbai Mirror. 

“I feel let down and I also find it amusing.”

She added: “I will never feel scared. Fear is not an emotion I have ever identified with.”

The BJP as a party has distanced itself from Amu’s comment.

Meanwhile Ruby Rose, who starred with Padukone in xXx 3, tweeted over the weekend: “I am in shock at reading what my dear friend is going through but in absolute awe of her strength and courage. 

“Deepika you are one of the strongest women I know.”

The Hindustan Times claimed that the film has been cleared by the BBFC for release in the UK on December 1, but not without opponents.

According to a report in Indian newspaper Deccan Chronicle, the star – who plays the titular legendary 13th-14th century Indian queen – was “disturbed” by harrowing scenes in which she ends her own life.

In the legend, Rani Padmini, also known as Padmavati, and her companions committed johar.

Padukone has been open about her own mental health over the years, so it’s understandable if playing a character in that headspace took its toll. 

A source told the paper: “It is not easy to play a character who has to commit suicide, or johar, as it is called.

“And when one is working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, he wants one to feel committed and feel the character all the time.”

They went on: “Sanjay takes his time to shoot every sequence. The build up to the johar scene and the scene itself was rather elaborate. 

“Deepika has already spoken about clinical depression earlier in her career. Hence, she does not want to do anything that will take her back to that space.”

Padukone had powerfully spoken out about depression in 2015, saying: “Overcoming it has made me a stronger person and I now value my life much more. 

“Accepting it and speaking about it has liberated me. I have stopped taking medication, and I hope my example will help people reach out for help.”

Padukone was seen in first-look images for Padmavati last month, ahead of its release in December.

She’s also thought to be returning for xXx 4 in the near future.
