With Mars’ atmosphere comprising almost entirely of carbon dioxide, scientists have been keen to find a way of producing oxygen on the distant planet to support human missions, the first of which could take place in the 2030s.

NASA’s current Mars mission, which landed the Perseverance rover on the planet in February 2021, carried with it MOXIE (Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment), a Massachusetts Institute of Technology-led technology demonstration aimed at creating oxygen on Mars.

The lunchbox-sized instrument succeeded in its quest in April, becoming the first machine to produce oxygen on another planet.

That was a huge breakthrough, but news this week highlights even greater progress, as scientists confirmed MOXIE has now succeeded with seven experimental runs in “a variety of atmospheric conditions, including during the day and night, and through different martian seasons.” The team said it still needs to demonstrate the technology during dawn and dusk, “when the temperature is changing substantially,” but it’s confident it can achieve this.

A report on MIT’s website said that during each of its seven runs, MOXIE was able to reach its target of producing six grams of oxygen per hour, “about the rate of a modest tree on Earth.”

The success gives scientists hope that a larger, more powerful version of MOXIE could be deployed for a human mission to Mars, giving astronauts breathable air and eliminating the need to transport oxygen from Earth.

MOXIE’s work is also helping engineers learn more about how to isolate and store oxygen on Mars, a process that’s vital for launching rockets off the planet’s surface to bring astronauts home.

“We have learned a tremendous amount that will inform future systems at a larger scale,” said Michael Hecht, principal investigator of the MOXIE mission at MIT’s Haystack Observatory.

Commenting on the state of the experiment so far, MOXIE deputy principal investigator Jeffrey Hoffman, a professor of the practice in MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, said: “This is the first demonstration of actually using resources on the surface of another planetary body, and transforming them chemically into something that would be useful for a human mission. It’s historic in that sense.”

According to MIT, MOXIE works its magic by first pulling in martian air in through a filter to remove contaminants. The air is then pressurized and sent through an instrument called the Solid OXide Electrolyzer (SOXE), which electrochemically splits the carbon dioxide-rich air into oxygen ions and carbon monoxide. The oxygen ions are then isolated and recombined to form breathable, molecular oxygen.

Now that MOXIE has proved it can make oxygen, scientists plan to see how it copes being pushed to capacity in an experiment to increase production.

But to get this far is already impressive, and gives NASA another piece to fit in the complex jigsaw that it needs to complete to one day fly astronauts to Mars.

“To support a human mission to Mars, we have to bring a lot of stuff from Earth, like computers, spacesuits, and habitats,” Hoffman said. “But dumb old oxygen? If you can make it there, go for it — you’re way ahead of the game.”

Atmospheric oxygen both enables complex life and is a hallmark of it. Aerobic respiration is so energetically efficient that it’s thought to have been needed for multicellularity. There is hardly any oxygen in the atmosphere surrounding Mars, raising questions about the prospects for complex life there.

But it’s possible some oxygen is dissolved in any watery brines that could exist at or just below the Red Planet’s surface. Geologists at CalTech and Harvard have analyzed exactly how much oxygen these brines could hold and found that it might be just enough.

A few conditions made them think there was even a chance. First, the Martian atmosphere has a tiny bit of oxygen, which is very different from it having none. (“There’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead.”) Second, the chemistry of Martian meteorites and rocks indicates that oxygen played a role in the formation of the Martian crust. Third: the brines on or just beneath the Martian surface have a much lower freezing point than pure water because of the magnesium and calcium perchlorate salts they contain. They can supercool down to 140 to 150 Kelvin while staying liquid, and cooler liquids can dissolve more gas.

Mars may have enough oxygen underneath its surface for life https://briefnews.eu/mars-may-have-enough-oxygen-underneath-its-surface-for-life/ https://briefnews.eu/mars-may-have-enough-oxygen-underneath-its-surface-for-life/#respond Mon, 22 Oct 2018 17:25:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mars-may-have-enough-oxygen-underneath-its-surface-for-life/

The possibility of life on Mars has been a tantalizing possibility for years, and recent discoveries have only increased excitement about whether we’ll find life on the red planet. Now, a new study in Nature Geoscience posits that it’s possible that Mars may have enough oxygen to harbor life under its surface.

The team was led by Vlada Stamenković from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and their findings stemmed from two different discoveries. We know there’s a possibility that there are subsurface lakes of briny water on Mars; one in particular may be located under the Martian polar ice cap. This means there’s a lot of potential for oxygen within these lakes, if they exist.

Back in 2016, the Mars Curiosity rover discovered that Mars may once have had an oxygen-rich atmosphere, but the loss of its magnetic field meant that the bulk of its surface oxygen escaped. However, there is still oxygen within the planet’s rocks which means that it may be present underneath the surface of the planet.

Given both these discoveries, the JPL-led team took a look at how much oxygen could exist in these subsurface briny lakes, and whether it would be enough to support life. The team found that it was indeed possible, especially in the polar regions because the lower temperatures in these regions means that it’s easier for oxygen to enter these briny lakes.

There are a lot of caveats and unknowns with this research — after all, the existence of these briny subsurface lakes hasn’t yet been proven. But it’s the next step forward in showing how life could exist on the red planet, given what we think we know about Mars. What’s more, it also shows us how life could exists on other planets without photosynthesis.

“The so-called ‘faint young Sun paradox’ has long been a topic of debate because its resolution bears important ramifications for the basic factors structuring climate regulation and the long-term habitability of Earth and Earth-like exoplanets.” So begins Chris Reinhard’s new paper in Nature.

Reinhard is a Principal Investigator at the Alternative Earths Team of NASA’s Astrobiology Institute, which has a goal of “unraveling the evolving redox state of Earth’s early atmosphere as a guide for exoplanet exploration” and eventual habitability.

The paradox at issue is that, three billion-ish years ago, our Sun was about 25-percent dimmer than it is today. Yet geological records suggest that the Earth was even warmer then than it is now. Most solutions to the paradox figure that there must have been high levels of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. Two big questions are related to that, though: which gasses, and what sort of processes put them there? Geological, chemical, and biological factors have all been suggested, with a different mix of gasses depending on the cause.

F-35s continue to be plagued with oxygen deprivation issues https://briefnews.eu/f-35s-continue-to-be-plagued-with-oxygen-deprivation-issues/ https://briefnews.eu/f-35s-continue-to-be-plagued-with-oxygen-deprivation-issues/#respond Thu, 26 Oct 2017 13:39:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/f-35s-continue-to-be-plagued-with-oxygen-deprivation-issues/

F-35 fighter jet pilots at the Luke Air Force Base in Arizona continue to experience unexplained symptoms of hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation, months after the world’s most expensive weapons system was grounded with similar issues.

Five incidents of pilots suffering from hypoxia-like symptoms were reported at Luke in May and early June, which forced the US Air Force to ground the Lockheed Martin-made aircraft. Since flights resumed late June, there have been an additional five cases of pilots experiencing tingling fingers and other signs of hypoxia, Aviation Week reports.

This was despite pilots being instructed to avoid high altitudes and ground procedures being modified to reduce the risk, an air force press release read.

Between 2006 and 2016, there were only 10 incidents of similar physiological episodes reported for F-3As. In 2017, there have been 10 incidents so far, according to the F-35 Joint Program Office records.

The F-35As appear to be more susceptible to the issue than other versions of the jet. Between 2006 and 2017, there have been 29 incidents recorded across all F-35s, with 20 of those occurring in F-35As, four in the Marine Corps’ F-35B jets and five with the F-35C.

In the latest incidents, the pilots were able to recover the aircraft, Col. Ben Bishop told Aviation Week.

Researchers remain unable to find the cause of the problem. They aren’t sure if the symptoms experienced are due to hypoxia, or a different physiological state that creates the same kind of issues, such as hypercapnia, caused by high levels of carbon dioxide, or toxins in the blood.

In June, they ruled out aircraft maintenance issues or problems with the jet’s equipment. Bishop said test results showed the F-35’s Onboard Oxygen Generation System had no problems producing enough oxygen, but that the team is looking at ways the algorithm could be altered to deliver oxygen at a steadier rate.

“Our Active Duty, reserve, and international team have worked tirelessly to better understand the physiological events,” Brig. Gen. Brook Leonard, the 56th Fighter Wing commander, said in June. “This is a complex challenge that necessitates multidimensional solutions across a series of steps to get back to a full operating capability.”

The F-35 previously had issues with its ejector seat posing a risk of neck injury to pilots, with dummies’ necks snapping during testing.

Luke Air Force Base is the primary pilot-training facility for the fighter aircraft.

Cancer kills someone every four minutes in the UK, according to Cancer Research UK – but scientists may have moved a step closer to finding an effective treatment for solid tumours.

Current ways to treat icancer include chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

However, researchers have discovered a new way to destroy tumours that is similar to the altitude training athletes and mountain climbers do before visiting low-oxygen areas.

A study by the Weizmann Institute of Science showed that starving particular cells of oxygen could train them to fight cancer in the same way as people training for a high altitude environment.

Known as T cells, they are a key part of the body’s immune system.

The researchers found that they destroyed cancerous tumours much more effectively after being starved of oxygen.

Using the immune system to fight cancer is a treatment known as immunotherapy.

The approach has already saved the lives of some cancer patients in the last few years.

Previously, killer T cells have been removed from patient’s blood, grown in a laboratory dish and adapted to identify and destroy cancerous cells.

They were then returned to the patient’s bloodstream.

It has worked well against certain leukemias and lymphomas, but not been as successful at fighting solid tumours.

As such, the researchers have been focusing on ways to target the latter.

They discovered that oxygen-starved T cells could fight solid tumours more successfully because they had a higher amount of a destructive enzyme that penetrates and kills cancerous cells.

“Killer T cells are the foot soldiers of cancer immunotherapy, they are the ones to target and destroy cancerous cells, but they don’t always manage to eliminate the malignancy,” said Professor Guy Shakhar of Weizmann Institute of Science.

”We’ve shown that by growing these T cells in an oxygen-poor environment, we can turn them into more effective killers.

“Just as altitude training increases endurance in humans, so putting killer T cells through a ‘fitness regimen’ apparently toughens them up.”
