Washington has seized Russian tycoon Oleg Deripaska’s US-based assets including a five-storey Manhattan mansion — but in a surprising twist, reportedly found the ex-wife and children of Roman Abramovich living at the property.

In April, Deripaska found himself on the US sanctions list after Washington officials claimed that he was heavily involved in crime and had ties to Russian mob leaders, as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Property records show that Abramovich’s former wife, Dasha Zhukova, a magazine editor, has listed the 11 East 64th Street residence, which Deripaska bought for $ 42.5 million in 2008, as her current address, the New York Post reported.

The story gets even stranger, as the Post reports that while Abramovich’s ex-wife is living in the house on Manhattan’s leafy and affluent Upper East Side, Abramovich himself is dating Deripaska’s estranged wife Polina Deripaska.

According to the Post, the feds are also negotiating with Deripaska to have him give up some of his European-based assets in order to have them continue running unaffected by sanctions. Treasury officials have explained that when the government freezes assets, anyone who does business with a sanctioned person or company can also be subject to sanctions themselves.

Abramovich recently transferred $ 92 million worth of property to ex-wife Zhukova, who is good friends with Ivanka Trump and currently in a relationship with Greek shipping heir Stavros Niarchos.

Last month, the New York Times reported that FBI agents had tried to flip Deripaska and turn him into a US mole in an effort to glean information on Russian organized crime and alleged collusion between Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and Moscow officials, but failed.

Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort, who was recently convicted of money laundering and other crimes, was also employed by Deripaska for a number of years.

A home in San Francisco’s ritzy Pacific Heights neighborhood has been privately listed off the market for $ 30 million, according to SF Curbed.

That’s more than twice what it sold for just three years ago.

The home at 2900 Vallejo St. once belonged to Vanessa Getty and husband William Getty, the grandson of oil tycoon Jean Paul Getty, who shelled out $ 11.5 million in 2002 for the space and sold it within a decade of making the purchase. In 2015 the mansion sold for $ 12.5 million, $ 3.5 million below asking price according to Redfin.

The mansion has since undergone substantial renovation, which includes new stucco to the exterior of the house, an extravagant winding staircase and some earthquake-fighting fixings: every level of the five-story home is connected by steel reinforcements to the bedrock underneath the house.

Realtor Ludovico Mazzola told Business Insider that the seller’s renovation was “comprehensive:” every aspect of the home was touched.

Whether it’s the extensive renovation or the Bay Area’s notoriously competitive housing market, the manor’s $ 30 million price tag makes the property one of the most expensive currently for sale in San Francisco.

Inside, the home is as dreamy and fairy-tale worthy as it sounds. Take a look.

The grey mansion at 2900 Vallejo sits on a corner in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood and weighs in at 9,700 square feet.

The house owned be Cameron Diaz’ character in “The Holiday” could now be yours — if you have $ 11.8 million to spare, that is.

The seven-bedroom, six-bathroom “landmark two-storey masterpiece” on 1883 Orlando Road in San Marino, California served as the exterior of the California mansion — as well as the backyard scenes — in the 2006 comedy/romance film starring Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jack Black, and Jude Law.

It’s on sale through realtors Brent Change and Linda Change of Compass, who provided photos of the property to Business Insider.

Scroll down to take a look inside.

The gated two-story mansion was designed by architect Wallace Neff as his own personal residence. It was built in 1928 for $ 40,000. He described it as a “California interpretation of the Italian Lombard vernacular.”

  • The Plaza in New York is one of the most famous and luxurious hotels in the world.
  • We stayed at The Plaza Hotel recently to see if it still lives up to the hype.
  • While the regal charm and luxury of the hotel is undeniable, it could use some tweaks for the modern age, including free wireless internet and better in-room entertainment.

It is no exaggeration to say that The Plaza in Midtown Manhattan is New York’s most iconic hotel. When it was opened in 1907, newspapers reportedly declared it “the greatest hotel in the world.“

Since, it has played host to New York’s ultra wealthy, from the scions of the Vanderbilt and Kennedy families to American artists and socialites F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. Ambassadors, princesses, and actors and actresses have all called The Plaza home at one point or another.

It first became etched in the American cultural imagination in Fitzgerald’s seminal novel “The Great Gatsby” and since has been featured in countless films, television shows, and literature. More recently, it was featured in “Home Alone 2: Lost In New York” and “American Hustle.”

President Donald Trump once owned the hotel for a time, purchasing it in 1988 for $ 390 million —around $ 807 million in 2017 dollars.

In an open letter to New York Magazine, he famously declared, “I haven’t purchased a building, I have purchased a masterpiece – the Mona Lisa. For the first time in my life, I have knowingly made a deal that was not economic – for I can never justify the price I paid, no matter how successful the Plaza becomes.”

The hotel has passed through many owners throughout its 100+ year history. We stayed at the hotel recently to see if it still retains the regal charm for which it has always we been known.

The Plaza Hotel is located in midtown Manhattan at the southeast end of Central Park, near Grand Army Plaza. The location is unbeatable for that classic ritzy uptown feel.

The Plaza Hotel was built by financier Bernhard Beinecke, hotelier Fred Sterry, and Harry S. Black and opened in 1907. It actually replaced a 15-year-old hotel of the same name on the site, which was open from 1890 to around 1905.

The entrance is wrought in golds, blacks, and whites. This is not the original entrance of the building — that is on Fifth Avenue. In 2008, the hotel reopened after a $ 400 million renovation that split the building into a 282-room hotel and 152 condominiums.

I’ve owned a Google Home Mini for three months now — here are the 4 biggest issues I have with it https://briefnews.eu/ive-owned-a-google-home-mini-for-three-months-now-here-are-the-4-biggest-issues-i-have-with-it/ https://briefnews.eu/ive-owned-a-google-home-mini-for-three-months-now-here-are-the-4-biggest-issues-i-have-with-it/#respond Tue, 27 Feb 2018 23:53:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ive-owned-a-google-home-mini-for-three-months-now-here-are-the-4-biggest-issues-i-have-with-it/ Google Home MiniGoogle/YouTube

I’ve owned a Google Home Mini for three months now, and most days, it makes me want to pull my hair out.

I most often use Google’s smart speaker in combination with my Chromecast TV setup, which I am also not a huge fan of, but nothing quite compares to the rage I feel for my Google Home Mini sometimes.

Before I get into it, I want to acknowledge that the technology is still in its early stages, and that is totally acceptable. There are several commands the Google Assistant can’t handle yet, and it’ll actually tell you when whatever you’re asking is too advanced for its AI. I appreciate that level of honesty, but still, there’s a handful of aspects of the Google Home Mini I just can’t forgive.

1. Google Home Mini can’t remember preferences, and it doesn’t seem to get better at learning your previous commands

Google

I am a simple woman. When I get home from work, I watch videos from the same three YouTube channels on my TV, and then watch one of two Netflix shows before bed. But for some reason, telling my Google Home Mini to perform all of the same searches day after day is a struggle.

For example, no matter how many times I watch the BBC show “Planet Earth” on Netflix, the Google Home Mini will not understand the first several times that I ask it to “play ‘Planet Earth’ on Netflix.” This is without even considering adding more qualifiers to my command, like an episode or season number. Eventually, the Google Home Mini will get it right — so part of the issue is not hearing me properly, but it’s also not keeping track of what I watch when it eventually gets it right, so it’s not any better the next time I give the same command.

These aspects of learning and predictability are basic features we’ve come to expect from AI-based technologies, but for some reason, the Google Home Mini can’t keep up.

2. The wake word is too sensitive

Google/YouTube

As a person who sleeps with the TV on, I’ve had to get up in the middle of the night multiple times to physically unplug the Google Home Mini because it was awakened by someone on the TV saying something that remotely sounds somewhat similar to the phrase, “Hey, Google,” and then tried to interpret what was said on TV into a function.

I know, this seems like a fairly rare, easily avoidable problem. But until you’ve been woken from a deep sleep by an eerily deadpan robot-woman yelling, “Sorry, I don’t know how to help with that,” or an unidentified Spotify playlist blasting at full volume, you won’t know the pain I’ve endured.

3. The Google Home app leaves much to be desired, and is practically useless

Screenshot

The Google Home app seems like a great idea.

In theory, it should show me what’s currently playing through my Google Home Mini (whether it’s a YouTube video, show on Netflix, playlist, podcast, or whathaveyou) and allow me to pause, control volume, rewind, and all the other functions that you usually find on a remote control. In addition, the app is intended to offer content that I might be interested in, and offer helpful tips and suggestions for using the Google Home.

In reality, the app is never synced with what’s really happening in my device, rendering it pretty useless as a replacement for the remote control. The “Browse” section is entirely generic, and not catered to my search histories at all.

The suggested commands are helpful, and I’m often surprised at some of the cool things I can ask the device. One of my favorites right now is, “Ok, Google. Tell me a joke.” Unfortunately, I have no reason to open the app and browse the suggested commands if it’s otherwise of no use to me, so I rarely interact with it.

Polestar Update: Tuner Volvos to Stay; Stand-Alone Stores for EVs Won’t Be Company Owned https://briefnews.eu/polestar-update-tuner-volvos-to-stay-stand-alone-stores-for-evs-wont-be-company-owned-2/ https://briefnews.eu/polestar-update-tuner-volvos-to-stay-stand-alone-stores-for-evs-wont-be-company-owned-2/#respond Tue, 13 Feb 2018 15:24:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/polestar-update-tuner-volvos-to-stay-stand-alone-stores-for-evs-wont-be-company-owned-2/ 2020 Polestar 1

–

Last year, Volvo announced it was expanding the purview of its Polestar high-performance sub-brand by making it a separate entity that would produce its own vehicles, and the debut of the first one, called simply the 1, followed shortly. This 600-hp plug-in hybrid is a carbon-fiber-bodied Volvo S90–based coupe; its electric-only range towers over that of other PHEVs at a claimed 93 miles. In addition to its flagship status, it’s also a bridge, as all future additions, including the already confirmed models 2 and 3, will be EVs. Polestar’s second entry will be a Tesla Model 3 fighter based on Volvo’s small-car Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which also underpins the XC40, and it will be shown at about the same time as the mid-2019 launch of the 1 before going on sale about six months later. The Polestar 3 will be an SUV based on the next generation of the larger Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, dubbed SPA2.

–

But at least as interesting as the cars are the initial business-model claims, including that the cars will be available only to lease from small stand-alone stores that will be separate from Volvo dealers. But is Polestar really going to dive headlong into a U.S. legal thicket by trying to own these stores itself, as Tesla has? And what about the hotted-up-Volvo side of Polestar’s business? Of course, many things are still in flux ahead of the 1’s launch in mid-2019, but we had the chance to catch up with Polestar’s senior leadership and fill in a few more details.

–

2020 Polestar 1

–

Wisely, Polestar is not going to try to own the retail spaces itself. Polestar COO Jonathan Goodman said current Volvo franchisees will be given the first opportunities to invest in a stand-alone Polestar store, which will eventually number 20 to 25 in the United States. Critically, the employees of these new spaces are intended to be more educators than salespeople, and they won’t be paid on commission. Polestars will likely funnel through Volvo dealerships for pre-delivery inspection before being delivered directly to a buyer’s home. Service will be scheduled via smartphone app and promises to be seamless due to the ability to use a phone as the key. The owner can grant access to the courier who will pick up the car and deliver it without ever handing over a physical key. Actual servicing will take place at Volvo dealers by Polestar-trained technicians.

–

The single monthly payment to lease a Polestar will include insurance and maintenance as well as the ability to borrow other cars, including Volvos. A particularly intriguing option is to have a car waiting upon your arrival at a distant airport. There will also be additional features, such as loaner accessories (why buy a roof rack when it’s just going to sit in the garage most of the time?), remote detailing, and additional car-swap days, which will cost extra. There will likely be tiered pricing, in which you can opt to pay a higher monthly payment that includes credits for more of these services, or, alternatively, the ability to pay individually for each one as desired.

–

2020 Polestar 1

–

CEO Thomas Ingenlath, formerly Volvo’s design chief, isn’t coy about the fact that Polestar is a low-risk way to test new sales models that could later be adapted for use at the Volvo mother ship, or for Lynk & Co in China, which arose from a combined Volvo/Geely effort. And many of these ideas are extensions of on-demand services that Volvo has been tinkering with in the United States, such as fueling and detailing.

–

–

And how about high-performance Polestar variants of Volvo models? Those will continue, as will Polestar accessories, but, confusingly, those will be available only through Volvo dealers and not through the stand-alone Polestar stores. Also slightly confusing is the couldn’t-be-simpler naming convention. Polestar officials like to use the abbreviation PS in front of the company’s model names, but PS3, for example, is a mental mapping that’s already occupied by a certain electronic gaming console. Referring to it instead as “Model 3” also creates obvious confusion.

–

But the services-on-demand features are intriguing, as is the thought of highly designed, higher-performance Volvos. We’ll be waiting to see how it all shakes out.

Shelby owned this 1966 GT350H, and you can, too https://briefnews.eu/shelby-owned-this-1966-gt350h-and-you-can-too/ https://briefnews.eu/shelby-owned-this-1966-gt350h-and-you-can-too/#respond Fri, 05 Jan 2018 21:20:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/shelby-owned-this-1966-gt350h-and-you-can-too/

Shelby fans, your car has arrived. At its Scottsdale auction on January 18, Bonhams will offer not just any Shelby Mustang, but one owned by the legend himself, Carroll Shelby. It’s a 1966 Shelby GT350H, and it wears the colors it did when new: white with blue stripes. This of course is a bit unusual for the GT350H, which was a rental car for Hertz and usually featured a black paint scheme with gold stripes.

According to Bonhams, the car was originally sold to Hertz for $ 3,865. That included optional wheels, radio and power brakes. It served as a rental car until 1967 when it was sold to a private owner who went about modifying the Mustang. That owner added a rear spoiler, a front valence like the GT350R race cars, a roll bar, different wheels, and some auxiliary gauges. At some point, Carroll Shelby bought the car from this owner, and over time several of the modifications were removed in favor of original-style pieces, notably the front valence and the rear spoiler. The roll bar remains, and it still has some auxiliary gauges, though.

The car is coming straight from the Shelby collection, so the only owners have been Hertz, the buyer from 1967, and Mr. Shelby himself. On January 18, you could be the next owner, but you’ll be paying quite a bit more than that sub-$ 4,000 price tag. Bonhams expects the car will sell for between $ 150,000 and $ 200,000.

  • The BMW Z8 once owned by Steve Jobs will be put up for auction in December.
  • The sleek sports car is expected to sell for between $ 300,000 and $ 400,000.
  • Jobs bought the car in 2000, after being named permanent CEO of Apple.

If you have the cash, you can now cruise around in the same BMW Z8 roadster once owned by Steve Jobs.

The vehicle, which was first owned by the late Apple cofounder, will be put up for auction in New York City on December 6. It’s expected to sell for between $ 300,000 and $ 400,000 — at least double what Jobs paid for the car in October 2000. He sold the car three years later.

The silver convertible comes with a copy of its old California registration, under the name “Jobs, Steven P.,” and the original Motorola flip-phone built into the display.

“Interestingly enough, and perhaps unsurprisingly, Jobs was known to have hated the Motorola phone,” according to the listing on auction house RM Sotheby’s website.

steve jobs bmw z8 carKarissa Hosek courtesy of RM Sotheby’s

Jobs was not known as a car enthusiast, but he took a liking to German design, RM Sotheby’s said. The tech visionary also owned a Mercedes-Benz SLs and BMW motorcycles. According to legend, tech billionaire Larry Ellison convinced Jobs to buy the BMW Z8, comparing its modern automotive engineering and ergonomics to Jobs’ own products and personality.

In 2000, Jobs was installed as the new CEO of Apple, after serving as an interim replacement for ousted executive Gil Amelio. The company was worth about $ 5 billion that year.

His car has a “titanium” exterior and black leather interior. It has clocked about 15,200 miles.

History buffs and Apple fans will certainly be drawn to the car, which is marked up because of its history. But the price is still reasonable for the car. The BMW Z8 cost $ 129,000 when it launched in 2000, and sells for more than $ 200,000 today, according to Autotrader’s Doug DeMur.
