  • Mark Harris, the Republican candidate for the House seat in North Carolina’s 9th congressional district, revealed on Thursday night that his campaign owed over $ 34,000 to a political operative who’s been accused of election fraud. 
  • The operative, Leslie McCrae Dowless, was contracted by a consulting group that Harris’ campaign paid for “Bladen absentee, early voting poll workers; reimbursement door to door,” according to an F.E.C. filing. 
  • Dowless is a convicted felon who has faced jail time for fraud and perjury, but has denied any wrongdoing in his work on this election. 

Mark Harris, the Republican candidate for the House seat in North Carolina’s 9th congressional district, revealed on Thursday night that his campaign owed over $ 34,000 to a political operative who’s been accused of illegally collecting absentee ballots from voters and only sending in those in favor of Harris. 

The operative, Leslie McCrae Dowless, was contracted by Red Dome Group, a Charlotte-based consulting group that Harris’ campaign hired to help turnout voters in rural Bladen County.

California state judge Suzanne Bolanos has rejected Bayer’s request for a new trial, instead opting to reduce the punitive part of the damages from $ 250 million to $ 39 million, equivalent to the amount the jury had awarded Johnson in compensatory damages. This adds up to a mandated payout of $ 78mn.

In addition to spraying Roundup and its analog Ranger Pro 30 times a year, Johnson was doused with the weed killer twice in on-the-job accidents and developed lymphoma within two years of the first mishap. As much as 80 percent of his body is covered in lesions, and his doctors did not think he’d live to see the jury verdict.

Johnson is satisfied with the verdict and hopes it leads Bayer and consumers alike to behave more responsibly. “I’m hoping that it snowballs and people really get the picture and they start to make decisions about what they eat, what they spray in their farms,” he told the Guardian. He hopes to see warning labels on Monsanto products, but isn’t holding his breath.

The confirmation of August’s verdict opens Bayer up to thousands of similar suits from plaintiffs with similar claims. The World Health Organization deemed glyphosate “probably carcinogenic to humans” in 2015, yet Johnson and others like him were told in training sessions that the weed killer was “safe enough to drink.”

Evidence emerged during Johnson’s case that Monsanto was not only suppressing research that confirmed the link between its products and cancer, but may actually be paying for its own “ghostwritten” research that would portray Roundup favorably.

Monsanto was sold to Bayer in June for $ 63 billion, and the massive new firm immediately chose to retire the Monsanto name. With a sordid history that includes Agent Orange and genetically-modified seeds in addition to glyphosate, the brand name had become too toxic. The products, apparently, have retained that toxicity, despite the name change.

Elon Musk reached a settlement today with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on a charge of securities fraud. Within the next 45 days, Musk will have to step down as chairman of Tesla and will be ineligible to return to that post for the next three years. However, Musk can continue in his role as the company’s CEO. Additionally, Tesla was charged with “failing to have required disclosure controls and procedures relating to Musk’s tweets”—a matter which it promptly settled.

In August, Musk tweeted that he was taking the car maker private and had “funding secured” to do so at the price of $ 420 a share. The result was a significant spike in Tesla’s share price that was reversed when it turned out that there was no such funding—nor much possibility of taking Tesla private under the circumstances Musk had promised.

The SEC was deluged with comments from investors—both short and long—who lost out as a result of Musk’s tweets. The agency quickly began an investigation into the matter and proposed a settlement with Musk that he rejected, at which point the SEC sued him for fraud. Had that case gone to trial—a process in which the SEC overwhelmingly wins—the consequences for Musk could have been much greater; the SEC could have barred Musk from serving as an officer or director in any public company.

As for the current rift between Europe and America, Hunt said “of course, there’s going to be times when we disagree, but I think now is the time when we should remember all the things in common that we have with the US and make sure that we continue that strong transatlantic partnership.”

Hunt’s attempt to reconcile the EU and US isn’t surprising, with London positioning itself as Washington’s prime ally in Europe. However, the European counterparts are unlikely to take top British diplomat’s words to heart as many in the block now believe that it’s time for the EU to learn to prosper and protect itself without the American assistance.

On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Europe can “no longer” entrust its security to the US and should finally “take responsibility” for guaranteeing its sovereignty. German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas, also spoke about the need to “recalibrate the transatlantic partnership” with Washington, echoing previous statements by Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Relations between the EU and US have lately deteriorated under US President Donald Trump, who unleashed a trade war against the block earlier this year, imposing harsh tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum. Berlin, Paris and other European capitals are also angered by Trump’s demands to increase military spending to 4 percent of their GDP in line with their commitment to the US-led NATO military alliance.

Another dividing issue is the Iranian nuclear deal, which Washington abandoned in May despite heavy lobbying from Macron and Merkel not to do so. The Trump administration reinstated economic restrictions against Tehran and threatened the European companies with sanctions if they continue doing business with Iran, which even led to an idea of own banking transactions system indented from the US being discussed in the EU.

A sculptor who created a replica of the Statue of Liberty for a Las Vegas casino was awarded $ 3.5 million in damages last week after the US Postal Service (USPS) accidentally used a photo of his statue—rather than a photo of the original statue in New York harbor—on one of its most common stamps.

If you bought a “forever” stamp between 2011 and 2014, there’s a good chance that it showed the face of the Statue of Liberty replica that sculptor Robert Davidson constructed for the New York-New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The Post Office licensed a photo of Davidson’s statue from the image service Getty for $ 1,500, initially believing it was a photograph of the original statue. (The license only covered the rights to Getty’s photograph of the statue—not the statue itself.)

The stamp with the resulting image was released to the public in December 2010; it took four months before anyone pointed out the mistake to the Post Office. In March 2011, a spokesperson said that the USPS “still loves the stamp design and would have selected this photograph anyway.” The Post Office continued using the photo for almost three years before retiring it in January 2014.

Studio Movie Grill, one of those fancy eat-in theaters where you can order a big plate of cheese fries as you watch Geostorm, owes the folks at MoviePass a very nice thank you letter, or perhaps an Edible Arrangement or two. Thanks to a partnership with MoviePass, Studio Movie Grill saw “record attendance attributed to the help of MoviePass, led by an increase in off-peak attendance as well as with smaller films.” Studio Movie Grill directly attributes their increased attendance to the use of MoviePass, a confirmation that the subscription-based movie ticketing service is paying off for some folks. Some movie theater chains may not be huge fans of MoviePass, but Studio Movie Grill is certainly signing their praises. The Dallas-based theater chain that provides “first-run movies with full-service, in-theater dining” just announced an uptick in off-peak attendance, as well as with smaller film, which they attribute to both their partnership with MoviePass – a partnership they struck about a year ago.

MoviePass made a big splash when they announced they would let users to the subscription-based movie ticketing service see one movie a day in theaters for only $ 10 a month. The deal got even sweeter recently when MoviePass announced a new $ 6.95 a month plan if you purchased an annual subscription. But there have been some problems: users have complained about a lack of timely response from customer service representatives, and others have even claimed cards they purchased weeks ago have still failed to arrive. On top of that, AMC Theaters, who are not fans of the service, keep trying to throw a wrench into the works with restrictions. But if MoviePass can’t be BFFs with AMC, they can at least take solace that Studio Movie Grill is in their corner.

“MoviePass has enhanced our ability to open hearts and minds by providing a no risk vehicle for movie goers to sample movies they might not otherwise see. SMG was amazed to learn that in some cases, as with Lady Bird, MoviePass generated a double digit % of total attendance. We are in the business of creating the habit of movie going and we are excited to be an early adopter of MoviePass.”

In other words, people are using MoviePass so often at Studio Movie Grill that even smaller indie films like Lady Bird have audiences packing the house. This news is something of a direct rebuttal to AMC Theaters, who turned up their noses and gave MoviePass a big thumbs down. Sorry, AMC, your loss.

Homero Josh Garza, who founded two cryptocurrency startups, GAW Miners and ZenMiner, has been ordered to pay a final civil judgment of $ 9.1 million, plus $ 700,000 in interest.

The judgement, which was formally approved by a federal judge in Connecticut on Tuesday, comes months after Garza pled guilty to a single criminal wire fraud charge. In May 2017, as part of the same lawsuit, Garza’s companies were hit with a default judgment of more than $ 10 million. No representatives made any formal response to the lawsuit—Garza himself invoked his Fifth Amendment privilege.

According to the civil complaint, which was first brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission in December 2015, Garza and his companies sold more than 10,000 “investment contracts representing shares in the profits they claimed would be generated from using their purported computing power to ‘mine’ for virtual currency.”

As the saber-rattling between the US and North Korea continues to escalate, a damning report has found that the ‘rogue state’ owes the City of New York over $ 150,000 in unpaid parking tickets.

“It is false. Whenever we have a ticket, we pay. Because, you know, if we have three tickets the city does not allow us to renew their permission,” Jong Jo, secretary of North Korea’s UN mission, told NBC.

The North Korean diplomatic mission to the United Nations owes more than $ 156,000 for 1,300 unpaid parking tickets, dating back to the 1990s. Other parking offenders include Iran ($ 184,987), China ($ 398,736), Syria ($ 362,550) and Russia ($ 104,231).

In 2002, the US State Department issued a memorandum of understanding which stated that parking privileges for diplomats can be revoked if they accumulate more than three parking tickets. This led to a massive drop in diplomatic parking violations, with the cumulative total of fines incurred by foreign diplomats in the city since reaching $ 700,000.

“The Department strictly enforces the rules and associated consequences concerning our extension of driving privileges to foreign mission members in the United States,” a US Department of State spokesperson said in a statement as cited by NBC.

“This is a responsibility that we take very seriously, meaning we ensure that, irrespective to an individual’s entitlement to immunity, there are consequences when a foreign mission member fails to comply with U.S. motor vehicle laws.”

The removal of parking privileges has also been used recently as a punitive measure as diplomatic relations between the US and Russia have cooled.
