Just one ibuprofen a day could be enough to slash the chance of getting the disease

In research published today Canadian experts suggest people should start taking a daily dose of anti-inflammatories to help prevent dementia following a positive saliva test.

And if started early, just one a day could be enough to slash the chance of being struck down by the incurable condition.

Lead researcher Dr Patrick McGeer, of Aurin Biotech in Vancouver, said: “Our discovery is a game changer.

“We now have a simple test that can indicate if a person is fated to develop Alzheimer’s disease long before it begins to develop.

“Individuals can prevent that from happening through a simple solution that requires no prescription or visit to a doctor.

“This is a true breakthrough since it points in a direction where Alzheimer’s can eventually be eliminated.”

Those considered at risk would be screened by a simple saliva test which identifies those on the road to developing the devastating brain wasting disease.

The technique screens levels of amyloid protein in the brain which shows up in saliva. High levels make it toxic causing the devastating memory and confusion in dementia patients.

In most people its production is almost exactly the same regardless of sex or age.

But if it is two to three times higher they are likely to be struck down.

That is because the protein, known as abeta 42, is a relatively insoluble material.

Although it is made everywhere in the body, deposits occur only in the brain, causing inflammation.

By discovering it is present in all organs Dr McGeer says ibuprofen, which prevents and reduces inflammation, can be used to fight the disease.

John Hardy, Professor of Neuroscience at University College, London, said: “This work from a pre-eminent Canadian group is of interest. There is no doubt that inflammatory processes are part of the underlying biology of Alzheimer’s and this work does deserve serious consideration.

“A saliva test for amyloid would be useful, but the utility of this requires replication by other groups before it would become accepted as clinically useful.”

It was previously thought abeta 42 was made only in the brain. However, the research team demonstrated the peptide is secreted in saliva from a gland called the submandibular found under the mouth.

As a result, with as little as one teaspoon of saliva, it could be possible to show whether someone is destined to develop Alzheimer’s.

The clinical signs of the disease become most prevalent at the age of 65 but experts think onset can occur more than a decade earlier. Around 850,000 people now live with dementia in the UK – 500,000 with Alzheimer’s.

Ibuprofen, like aspirin, is a non-prescription anti-inflammatory drug commonly used to treat pain and fever.

It can be bought from supermarkets for as little as 19p a pack.

It was developed by Boots in the 1960s and became available over the counter in the 1980s.

The World Health Organisation includes the drug on its list of “essential medications” needed in every basic health system.

Dr Doug Brown, of Alzheimer’s Society, said: “With no way to slow down or cure dementia finding a way to prevent the condition is one of the holy grails of dementia research.

“The researchers’ suggestion in this paper that taking a daily anti-inflammatory drug as soon as a positive result for dementia risk is shown by a saliva test is premature, based on the evidence at the moment.

“Long-term use of anti-inflammatories runs an increased risk of stomach ulcers and intestinal bleeding and can have harmful interactions with other medications like [blood thinning drug] Warfarin. We always recommend talking to your doctor before changing your medication.”

In research published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease Dr McGeer said: “What we have learned through our research is people who are at risk of developing Alzheimer’s exhibit the same elevated abeta 42 levels as people who already have it.

“Moreover, they exhibit those elevated levels throughout their lifetime so, theoretically, they could get tested anytime.

“Knowing the prevalence of clinical Alzheimer’s commences at age 65, we recommend people get tested ten years before, at age 55, when the onset of Alzheimer’s would typically begin.

“If they exhibit elevated abeta 42 levels then, that is the time to begin taking daily ibuprofen to ward off the disease.”

Whenever I suddenly come down with a fever or allergy season sneaks up on me, it seems like I never have the proper medicine on hand and I’m forced to stop by my local pharmacy to pick up the appropriate products. They’re usually more expensive than I’d expect, but I have little choice other than to shop the aisles of overpriced over-the-counter medicines if I want to ease my pain.

Amazon’s latest venture, its own line of over-the-counter medicine called Basic Care, aims to change this experience and make buying basic medicine more affordable and convenient. 

There are currently 60 Basic Care options across a range of categories: allergy/cough/cold, digestive, pain, stop smoking, hair regrowth, children’s, and feminine hygiene. These generic medicines are meant to help people address their basic health needs. Amazon says, “It’s basic. In a good way.”

Generic medicines are reviewed by the FDA and are identical to already marketed brand-name drugs in dosage, safety, strength, route of administration, quality, performance characteristics, and intended use. According to the FDA, they work in the exact same way and provide the same clinical benefits as their brand-name counterparts. Thus, there’s no reason why you should buy a shiny pack of Tylenol over acetaminophen.  

To see how Amazon’s new Basic Care offerings stacked up to its competitors, we compared their prices to those of the generic over-the-counter brands at Walgreens, Target, CVS, Walmart, and Rite Aid. Available tablet counts sometimes varied, so we tried to find the closest equivalent and any differences are noted below. In each slide, competitor prices are arranged from lowest to highest. 

Generic medicines are already cheaper than name brand ones, but we found that many of the Basic Care products are even more affordable than those at large pharmacies. Sometimes the price differences are minimal (Walmart is usually the closest match), while others are significant — a 300-count Basic Care allergy tablets are $ 13.72 while Walgreens’ version is $ 45.99. 

Given the cheap prices and fast two-day Prime shipping, it’d be wise to stock up on your basic medicine essentials from Amazon ahead of time so you never have to overpay for medicine from a pharmacy again. Keep scrolling to see some of the Basic Care options that are cheaper than anywhere else.

Flu and cold season is in full swing as the combination of plummeting temperatures and late-night festive celebrations leave Britons feeling under the weather.

While there are differences between colds and the flu – with the former being much more serious than the latter – the two common winter illnesses share many symptoms.

These include a fever, headache, sore throat, as well as a cough.

Many will turn to over-the-counter medications as a way to treat the latter ailment, which is caused by a virus.

An estimated £2.47 billion was spent in Great Britain on over-the-counter medicines between 2016 to 2017.

Pain relief was the top reason for purchases, closely followed by cough, colds and sore throats.

A rise in the sales of decongestants, cough liquids and lozenges in recent years has been attributed to official advice that coughs do not require a GP visit, and are best treated at home.

But do over-the-counter drugs actually work for a cough?

The NHS state that there is a lack of evidence that they do.

Norman Edelman, a senior scientific advisor to the American Lung Association, told the website WebMD: “We’ve never had good evidence that cough suppressants and expectorants help with cough.

“But people are desperate to get some relief. They’re so convinced that they should work that they buy them anyway.”

There are currently no studies suggesting such drugs, which include dextromethorphan and guaifenesin, help relieve symptoms. 

But while there is no proof that they do work, there is no research saying they definitely don’t, meaning they could still help.

However, the NHS recommend a homemade cough mixture – using honey, lemon and hot water – as a more effective treatment.

They add that drinking plenty of fluids and sucking on lozenges could also help, but that antibiotics definitely won’t.

Other flu and cold symptoms, such as a blocked nose, fever and headache, could be relieved with over-the-counter medications.
