However, the high value of such belongings in cabin baggage is resulting in a worrying number of travellers risking their lives – and those of others – in a bid to save their personal effects during emergency evacuations.

Experts are now calling for airlines to lock overhead bins during flights to prevent such action.

The call to introduce remote controlled lockers was made in a new report called “Emergency Evacuation of Commercial Passenger Aeroplanes” by the Royal Aeronautical Society.

“The widespread ownership of smart phones has led to an increasing amount of photographic evidence showing passengers retrieving cabin baggage and taking it with them despite the potential threat to interfere with safe and expeditious evacuations,” the report states.

The increasing trend of grabbing valuables is made worse by the increasing volume of cabin baggage permitted by operators.

Due to severe restrictions on hold luggage, various operators now charge to check in such baggage as well as if cabin luggage exceeds size imitations.

A further issue is that fliers tend to store such important items as passports, legal and business documents, laptops, mobile phones, cameras, other electronic equipment and medicines in these bags. 

“The probability is that passengers will want to take such items with them in an evacuation, the more so if cabin baggage is all that a passenger has with them for their journey,” says the report.

The dramatic increase in ‘airside’ airport shops has also contributed to cabin stowage problems.

An alarming example of a passenger risking everything for materials goods is when a British Airways plane crashed on final approach at London Heathrow on 17 January 2008.

An Accident Report by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) noted that one flier, having evacuated the plane, re-entered the passenger cabin via an evacuation slide in order to retrieve personal belongings.

Other accidents where passengers evacuated with cabin baggage include:

• Air France A340-3300 Toronto, Canada 2 August 2005

• Virgin Atlantic A330-300 London Gatwick, UK 16 April 2012

• Asiana Airlines B777-200 San Francisco, USA 6 July 2013

• Air Canada A320-200 Halifax, Canada 29 March 2015

• British Airways B777-200 Las Vegas, USA 8 September 2015

• Emirates B777-300 Dubai, Emirates 3 August 2016

According to the report, “Most of the above accident were catastrophic, involving external fire and in one case fuselage disruption. 

“These accidents required a degree of urgency in the evacuation, yet passengers seemed to be more concerned with their personnel possessions rather than their own safety or the safety of fellow passengers.”

Taking cabin baggage in an emergency could hinder evacuation, injure passengers and damage evacuation slides.

Consequently, steps may well need to be taken to prevent this occurring. One option is for the overhead bins to be centrally locked for taxi, take off and landing. Passengers could still access their under-seat items, however.

The website for the new Russian Irkhut MC-21 aeroplane believes more drastic action should be taken. 

They suggest bins should be “equipped with remotely-controlled interlocking electromechanical locks, and be visually monitored by the cabin crew.”

Currently the cabin crew simply do not have enough control over passengers who insist on removing their belongings in an evacuation. The report fears that’s it’s only a “matter of time before an evacuation occurs when the issue of cabin baggage becomes a survival factor.”

Mobile phone video footage has emerged of a bag on fire, billowing with smoke in the overhead locker of a China Southern Airlines plane.

During the short clip, a flight attendant is seen hurrying to put out the fire, dousing the luggage with a bottle of water.

An alarmed passenger steps in, throwing a bottle of what appears to be orange juice over the rest of the flames, until the fire is extinguished.

The cause of the fire was a portable charger, which spontaneously combusted in the overhead compartment of the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

Fortunately, this was not mid-flight. The fire broke out as passengers were boarding at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport on Sunday afternoon.

The hazardous incident provoked a three-hour delay on flight CZ3539, which had been scheduled to fly to Shanghai’s Hongqiao International Airport at around noon.

China Southern Airlines released a statement on the Chinese microblogging website, Weibo, about the incident.

It explained that the fire had been caused by a portable charger, powered by a lithium ion battery which was stored inside a passenger’s cabin luggage.

No one was injured by the fire and the aircraft only suffered minor interior damage. It is believed the passenger whose bag caught alight is assisting the airline with an investigation into the fire.

Over the past few years, some aviation experts have expressed concerns about charged lithium batteries being transported in the hold of commercial aircrafts, due to fire risks.

This has led the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to slap down a worldwide ban on lithium ion batteries being carried in the hold of passenger flights.

It stresses however that the rule does not apply to personal electronic devices carried by passengers or crew in cabin baggage – within certain limitations.

Portable chargers and lithium ion batteries are commonly used in devices, from mobile phones and digital cameras to portable medical devices such as mobility aids.

According to the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) “spare batteries for portable electronic devices containing lithium ion batteries exceeding a watt-hour (Wh) rating of 100 Wh but not exceeding 160 Wh [can be] carried for personal use” in carry-on baggage but not in the hold.

“Each lithium ion cell or battery must be individually protected so as to prevent short circuits.”

Airlines also have their own policies about when passengers can bring lithium ion batteries on board.

Whilst British Airways allows lithium ion batteries in some cases, they must never be put in the hold and the carrying requirements depend on the battery’s Wh rating. In some cases, the passenger must contact the airline for approval before carrying these potentially hazardous items on board.

According to Ryanair, passengers are allowed to bring a “maximum of two spare lithium ion batteries in carry-on baggage and these must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.

“Battery terminals must be either recessed or packaged so as to prevent contact with metal objects including terminals of other batteries.”

easyJet’s policy is similar, with all spare batteries including lithium ion for portable electronic devices to be carried in carry-on baggage only. Again, they must be individually protected to prevent short circuit.

Passengers flying onboard China Southern Airlines were in for a frightening start to their trip on Sunday as a phone charger caught fire in a passenger’s luggage stowed away in the overhead compartment.

Passengers were in the process of boarding a flight heading from Guangzhou to Shanghai, China, on Sunday when smoke was spotted inside the airplane’s cabin, airline representative said in a statement posted on Chinese social media platform Weibo.

All plane passengers can’t help but overhear the doorbell-resembling noises that sound overhead at various stages throughout a flight. 

But as many would have noticed, the alerts aren’t always communicating the seatbelt sign. 

Sometimes the sounds play out for seemingly no reason at all. 

Now cabin crew have revealed that they in fact always have a meaning. 

The alerts are used as a secret code for the airline staff to communicate to each other, with different sounds attached to different messages. 

Revealed by Australian airline Qantas on the cabin crew blog, the information lets passengers in on the flying mystery. 

Crew said: “On our Airbus aircraft you’ll hear the ‘dong’ sound shortly after take-off – this sound lets crew know that the landing gear is being retracted.

“Depending on where you are sitting, you can probably hear or feel it moving – if you’re downstairs in the pointy end of one of our Boeing 747’s – you’re basically sitting right on top of the front landing gear.”

The second sound usually comes after the seatbelt sign is switched off. 

Proceeding ‘dongs’ use high or low chimes to communicate different messages. 

A single chime means a passenger has asked for service, which lights up in the galley and over the passenger’s seat. 

A high-low ‘dong’ is the crew phone ringtone from one galley to the next, asking for something like more snacks from another section. 

Three chimes with two low ‘dongs’ communicates a priority message from the pilot or other crew members. 

They explained: “This could be letting them know there may be turbulence ahead, so they should start putting away the meal carts and be ready in case the fasten seat belt sign comes on.”

A pilot recently gave an on-board revelation of his own, for how passengers can cope with turbulence. 

Captain Ron Nielsen recommends using a pen and paper to write your name over and over with your non-dominant hand, in order to distract you from the bumpy ride.
