“Europe can no longer rely on the United States for its security,” the French President said in a recent foreign policy speech in Paris.
Relations between the US and France showed a promising start this year. “Handsy” interactions took place between Donald Trump and Macron during their summit in April, with the pair planting a tree together on the White House lawn. From those scenes, you would never guess that the allies would turn on each other only a month later.
The first fracture in relations occurred after Trump’s withdrawal from the landmark Iran nuclear deal. At that time, on the heels of Trump pulling out of the agreement, France’s economy minister urged Europe to stop acting like “US vassals” and continue trading with Tehran in defiance of what the “global economic policeman” had in store.
Trump’s import tariffs on steel and aluminium in June triggered a global backlash and retaliation from the EU. Macron called the measures “illegal” and warned that “economic nationalism leads to war,” adding that this is exactly “what happened in the 1930s.”
This “reformatting of transatlantic relations during the Trump presidency has gone very far,” Yury Rubinsky, head of the Center of French Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told RT, adding that it was Washington that initiated such a shift.
Independent journalist Luc Rivet puts it another way. “The love story between Europe and the US has ended with fracas,” adding that the Trump administration “has simply put a crude light on an inevitable evolution.”
Ditching the Iran nuclear deal, quitting the Paris accord, and imposing steel and aluminium tariffs – the White House’s tough-guy rhetoric seems to be driving the EU further and further away from Washington. In fact, Trump set the stage for the rift between the US and the bloc during his presidential campaign, when he called the union a “hell-hole” and a “mess.” Later during his presidency, Trump noted that the US has “a lot of foes,” including the European Union.
That’s why in his speech about EU security, the French leader also stated that he wants to launch an exhaustive security review involving all of Europe’s partners, which also includes Russia. Days later, during a news conference on a visit to Helsinki, Macron insisted that it is in the EU’s interest “to have a strategic relationship with Turkey as well as with Russia that brings stability, that will in the long-term bring more strength and coherency.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov believes that Macron’s position wasn’t formed in a single day. “The US course of action on the international arena makes everyone think,” he said.
No country with “a little respect for itself” can tolerate when its policies are being dictated, the Russian top diplomat noted.
Yury Rubinsky, head of the Center of French Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, insists that when Macron mentioned Russia, he was mostly referring to the crisis in Syria, and, in particular, to the reconstruction of the war-torn country after the conflict is over. “Where would all migrants return [after the war is over]? Who would pay for the country’s reconstruction?” he asked.
Macron, a 40-year-old ambitious centrist who is now “desperately looking for a major international role in the EU,” has failed in many of his ambitions, Rivet believes. Yet the former investment banker may “lead the path of reconciliation,” says the journalist. In addition, Austria and Hungary, as well as Eurosceptic parties such as Alternative for Germany (AfD) and France’s National Rally (formerly Front National), are calling for closer ties with Russia and urging for sanctions to be canceled.
Europe is starting to understand that sanctions against Russia won’t work, while its economy suffers. “European business and agriculture lobbies have been trying for a long time to persuade European politicians to dismantle the set of mutual sanctions that mainly hurt European agribusiness,” Rivet said.
Yet Rivet admitted that Europe can do little to confront Washington. “The EU will simply negotiate, at best, to protect its companies and products selling and trading in the US, from more American sanctions,” he said. Speaking on the Iranian nuclear deal, Rivet assumed that Europe is “completely naked” and “cannot do anything to save” the agreement.
“No European company would ever dare antagonize the American government about the sanctions on Iran. Europe would not really confront America on Iran. Europeans would surely lose the fight,” he said.
But there may be a possibility for Europe to take a closer look at its eastern neighbor, instead of the one across the Atlantic Ocean. “Europe is totally paralyzed when it comes to dealing with the US, except, why not, in re-opening the window of collaboration with Russia,” Rivet said.

Coronation Street fans were up in arms this week when they discovered murderer Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre) wasn’t dead – but could he kill again?
Last week viewers were led to believe the killer had plunged into the sea after Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) failed to rescue him off a cliff edge.
But now he’s back, and holed-up in a quaint seaside cottage. Is his killing spree over?
Express.co.uk conducted a poll and viewers voted in their thousands – Pat Phelan should watch out because it’s not good news for the character.
Almost a third of viewers believe Pat Phelan will be caught before he can strike again.
But if he does strike again, Eileen Grimshaw’s probably going to be his next victim.
Could Anna Windass’ son Gary (Mikey North) be the one to stop Phelan in his path?
In new images from the Coronation Street, Gary can be seen arriving at a caravan park with his friend Joel.
Gary, whose mother Anna (Debbie Rush) was wrongly convicted of attempted murder due to Pat’s scheming, will hunt down the villain.
When the pair arrive at Pat’s hideout they spot him taking water back to his caravan.
Just moments before Gary plans to confront killer builder Phelan, Joel panics and chickens out.
According to reports, he was heard shouting out: “He’s a psycho, I’m leaving.”
Speaking about the upcoming storyline, a soap insider told Metro: “The fact that viewers know Phelan is alive will mean there will be a real sense of foreboding over coming weeks.
“They know he is out there somewhere, just waiting to strike.”
They added: “At the moment, there are police everywhere and Phelan’s best option is to stay in hiding with a false name.
“But with so many people he has a score to settle with, there is no doubt that he will be back on the Street before long.
“And the scenes are destined to be explosive and unmissable.”
Coronation Street continues tonight on ITV at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
Lynn, 55, has been a stalwart of the BBC radio show for 18 years.
However, she has now decided it is time to leave after setting her alarm for four in the morning everyday.
As she took part in her last ever show the BBC with Chris, the presenter tried to make the veteran travel expert stick around a bit longer.
He explained how it was Lynn’s last day and as such the show would be dedicated to her.
But cheeky Chris explained: “So she says… Still working on that!”
He went on: “Rip up your resume and I’ll see you in a couple of weeks.
“Take a month off, take a sabbatical, we don’t care so long as [you’re here].”
Later on in the show, Chris sneakily read out some kind tweets from listeners.
Although it seemed he was showing her love, the former Top Gear host was actually trying to sway her.
He insisted: “It’s not over until it’s over!”
Was Donna and Harvey’s kiss just a kiss, or the beginning of something more? According to Suits executive producer Aaron Korsh, it was both.
A viral video has emerged of a P&O cruise ship struggling in the strong storms.
The Ventura ship departed Southampton and it was during their journey through the Bay of Biscay that it faced extremely strong winds.
During the video, a group of passengers attempt to drink at their table as the ship is flung about.
The restaurant appears to be in carnage thanks to the storm.
Cutlery and crockery can be seen scattered all over the floor by some abandoned tables.
The serving staff are also clinging to the handrail in an attempt to stay on their feet.
Other passengers cling to each other while they stay sitting in their chair.
The man who uploaded the video explained how elderly passengers were thrown to the floor despite sitting down.
He revealed: “Seated passengers’ chairs toppled over spilling elderly passengers onto the floor.
“The listing was such, and becoming slowly worse, that I began to fear the ship may actually go over.”
A spokesperson for P&O Cruises explained: “We can confirm that the ship was transiting the Bay of Biscay in adverse weather and that a sudden gust of wind increased the wind to 100 knots.
“When the wind increased, the ship altered course to minimise the effect. P&O Cruises would never compromise the safety of its guests or crew.
“On occasion it is unfortunately necessary to sail in conditions which are less than ideal and if this occurs then we will do all we can to minimise the impact of the weather.
“The sea and weather are dynamic forces and any decisions taken are in compliance with company, flag and international regulations as well as in the observance of safe and good seamanship.”
A similar cruise storm was also caught on camera, this time with a Norwegian Cruise ship.
Waves as high as 30 feet hit the ship, terrifying passengers as they sailed through the Bahamas.
The presenter slammed the former Spice Girl for spending thousands on skin care products during a discussion on This Morning.
The 55-year-old was told by presenter Alison Hammond, 42, that the fashion designer spends more than £1,200 on beauty products a day.
She said: “If you want to look like Victoria it’s going to cost you £1,204 a day. She spends £648 on skin care products which is unbelievable [and] £366 on makeup.
Understandably, Phillip was shocked by the amount Victoria spends on beauty products and questioned Alison’s figures: “It can’t be a day, it can’t be a day. That’s eight grand a week!”
Before Alison interrupted, adding: “And [she spends] £124 on body lotions and £66 on hair products.”
Mocking Victoria, Phillip Schofield replied: “She must be smearing it all over the bathroom. She’s got to get a little bit more of a budget. She only needs a little pea size bit.”
Of course, his comments were all meant in jest as he giggled away with Alison and co-host Holly Willoughby, 36, moments later.
Also during the show, Phillip and Holly were interrupted by a vibrating product.
The duo were stunned when the Foreo UFO, a product designed to help users achieve blemish-free skin, began vibrating loudly in the studio.
Although Holly burst into a fit of laughter, Phillip didn’t see the funny side to it and proceeded to pick up the product to switch it off.
This Morning airs weekdays on ITV from 10.30am.
Last night’s live show saw the remaining Strictly Come Dancing contestants face a new challenge as they were tasked with performing not one but two routines, the first an individual dance and the second a group Paso Doble-thon.
Former Emmerdale actress Gemma Atkinson, 33, tackled the notoriously tricky Samba, donning a sizzling red frock as she shimmied her way around the dance floor with her professional partner Aljaž Škorjanec, 27.
Unfortunately, she failed to impress the BBC judging panel, with Craig Revel Horwood, 52, calling the dance “lumpish and awkward”.
“Your hands in the promenade runs looked like soup ladles,” he complained.
Darcey Bussell, 48, criticised the narrative, while Bruno Tonioli, 61, jibed: “It was an absolutely perfect Samba with a hangover.”
Gemma and Aljaž scored a disappointing 25 points, also struggling to improve their leaderboard standing in the Paso Doble-thon, coming fifth out of seven couples and being awarded just three extra points.
Fans flooded to social media to blast the judges for “under-marking” them, with one fuming: “ABSOLUTE BULLS**T!!! Gemma did the best in the group dance! The judges are rubbish and biased!”
“Gemma fifth, Davood [Ghadami] fourth! Absolutely disgusting marking from the judges!! Fix fix fix,” another raged, while a third said: “Davood and Gemma under-marked yet again. Debbie [McGee] over-marked. Shocker.”
“I’m sorry but how the hell did Gemma only get fifth?” another angry Strictly viewer tweeted, adding: “And why in the name of everything that is holy didn’t Joe win?? I’m beyond sick of this favouritism now.”
Several fans accused the judges of “screwing over” Gemma, with one saying: “All my votes went to Gemma. They really screwed her over this week.”
“Gemma was massively under-marked this week – the judges completely screwed them over,” said another. “Vote vote vote!”
Strictly Come Dancing continues tonight at 7.20pm on BBC One.
Can Kevin Spacey ever work in Hollywood again?
The makers of his hit TV show House of Cards are discussing killing off his character while Ridley Scott has cut him from the upcoming movie All The Money In The World.
Just weeks before the film’s release, Spacey’s scenes as J Paul Getty have been reshot with Christopher Plummer.
Now Breakng Bad star Bryan Cranston says: “He’s a phenomenal actor, but he’s not a very good person. His career now I think is over.”
Cranston told the BBC: “That sort of experience goes unchecked until something like this happens. The pillars of what was are falling. Everything is being exposed.”
Spacey has been hit with a successions of allegations of sexual misconduct stretching back over his long and illustrious career. Fellow actor Anthony Rapp was the first to come forward, detailing disturbing scenes that happened when he was just 14 yeears old.
It’s not just the shocking allegations of what happened behind closed doors, the star is also under fire for his behaviour towards his co-stars on set.
Spacey’s Baby Driver co-star Jon Bernthal has accused him of being ‘a bully’.
Bernthal said: “Going on to that set and working with him, I wasn’t there much, but when I was there, he really rubbed me the wrong way. I thought he was a bit of a bully.
“I didn’t really care for the way he was behaving toward some of the other people on set.”
Spacey is now a subject of an investigation by the Metropolitan Police.
His behaviour is being seen as a symbol of endemic “animalistic” power abuses that have taken place in Hollywood, not just for the sexual harrassment and preying on young and vulnerable men and women in the industry.
Bernthal added: “I remember at the time thinking, ‘Man, if that was a woman that he was talking to, I would’ve done something, I would’ve said something. I was really happy to sort of get out of there for that reason, and I just remember losing a ton of respect for him.”
“I think it would be weak of me to sort of pile on about some sh** that I don’t know about. But the kind of man he was when I saw him, working with him, made me lose all respect for him and I was enormously disappointed.”
It seems uinimaginable that Spacey will ever be able to work in the industry again.
Ozzy said: “My emotions are flying all over the place… I’ve been happy, I’ve been tearful. Let’s see what happens.”
The music legend also warned that there would never be any comebacks for teh band, unlike so many other rock groups.
He added: “This is definitely it, it’s run its course.”
The band were rehearsing at the Genting Arena in Birmingham, ahead of Saturday night’s farewell concert.
The iconic Brummie band was formed in 1968 but was called the rather less heavy metal-sounding Polka Tulk Blues Band.
Ozzy looked back on those early days with fondness and told the BBC: “I remember playing the Crown pub in Birmingham and thinking, ‘This’ll be good for a couple of years – drink a few beers and have a jam’.
“But it was the beginning of the most incredible adventure you could think of. I’ve had the best life out of it.
Ozzy added: “One of the proudest things I have in my heart is the fact that Black Sabbath wasn’t a band that was created by some big mogul. It was four guys who said, ‘Let’s have a dream’, and it came true beyond our wildest expectations.
“People come up to me and say, ‘We’re not worthy’, and I’m like, ‘Why are you being that way?’
“But at the same time, if they don’t recognise me I get upset.”
It seems unimaginable that anyone wouldn’t recognise the rock star-turned-reality-tv-pioneer.
Ozzy has been hitting headlines since the early 1970s, as much for the band’s chart successes as for his outrageous on-stage performances.
Plagued with drink and drug problems, the star was fired by the band 1979 at the height of their fame.
Considerable solo success followed but his greatest success into the 1990s was the creation of the heavy metal festival Ozzfest.
Ozzy returned to Black Sabbath on 1997 and they have continued to tour and release new material.
His incredible music career, however, has been almost eclipsed by the launch of The Osbounes in 2002 which blazed the trail for reality television featuring famous faces and made stars of his wife Sharon, and children, Jack and Kelly.
But music remains his first love and assured fans he woudl continue with his solo projects.
Ozzy said: “What I learned is you have to have something to retire to. So I’m going to continue with my solo thing. It’s not a job, it’s a passion.”
