The One Show continued tonight with Alex Jones and co-host Gethin Jones and they were joined live in the studio by Britain’s Got Talent host Amanda Holden. Amanda was on the show to promote her new single dedicated to the NHS after she endured two difficult births one of them being her stillborn son Theo.

Amanda explained: “Well, it’s been well publicised that I have used the NHS more than most people. 

“I have always heralded them and known they were there and it’s amazing that now people are shining a light on them,” she added. 

“Chris [her husband] and I had a baby born sleeping in an NHS hospital, and then the following year our lovely daughter Holly, our rainbow baby.

“But then I had an awful birth, I went into a coma so that was horrendous and they held Chris’s hand throughout.

“And then, my sister had a car crash three years ago, she’s fine. So yeah, we have used them more than most people,” Amanda honestly recounted. 

Gethin asked Amanda how she and her family were doing during the lockdown as the UK heads into its eighth week staying at home especially as she also does an early morning radio show with co-host Jamie Theakston.

Fans took to Twitter to discuss, hitting out at the BGT star and saying that it was not appropriate for a family show.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry last week issued a lengthy statement in which they outlined the new system they will adopt once they quit the Royal Family, confirming they will not be making use of the Sussex Royal brand after their departure. Royal biographer Tom Bower accused the Duchess of Sussex of infusing the statement with “spiteful fury” aimed at the Queen over the brand and of being “rude” to Her Majesty. But Good Morning Britain contributor Afua Adom hit back at the biographer accusing his of taking the statement “out of context” and contributing to a campaign of “Meghan bashing.”

Ms Adom said: “I think what is spiteful in this instance is the way this whole statement has been interpreted.

“No other part of the statement has been talked about where Harry talked about the work he is going to continue doing on the armed services and the Invictus Games.

“Nobody is talking about the fact they said they want to remain working with the Royal Family, with the Queen but they are not going to do that.

“It would be spiteful if they said they are going to use the term royal anyway – it was a statement, it was very, very factual. There was no emotion in there.”

She added: “People are taking things that they say out of context, blaming solely on Meghan as per usual as people have continuously done over this whole thing, assuming it’s all Meghan as if Harry is weak-willed, assuming she’s somehow ruling him and all-powerful.

“On Friday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed they will not be using the Sussex Royal brand while remarking neither the Queen nor other members of the Royal Family have exclusive rights to use the term “royal.”

The statement read: “While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ or any iteration of the word ‘Royal’ in any territory (either within the UK or otherwise) when the transition occurs Spring 2020.”

The Duke and Duchess have spent the past month living in Canada with their son Archie. Meghan and Harry are expected to settle down in the Commonwealth country for the time being but sources close to the royals suggested they have also been seeking a house in Los Angeles.

The couple have been spotted crossing the border into the US to attend a private JP Morgan conference in Miami earlier this month, during which Prince Harry delivered a speech.

They later travelled to Meghan’s native California to hold meetings with officials at Stanford University’s Palo Alto campus over their plans for their future charitable endeavours.

Football commentator Chris Karma joined Jeremy Vine in the studio this morning to discuss his Christmas album, but it was his outrage for the WASPI scandal that got the biggest reaction as he claimed women have had their pensions “taken away from them”. Viewers called Kamara a great advocate for women after he expressed his views. 

Today’s show focused on women who have lost years of state pension after their retirement age and Jeremy Corbyn’s pledge to help. However it is going to cost the taxpayer £58billion. 

Jeremy took a call from a woman named Angela from Manchester and asked: “So how much have you lost Angela.”

Angela replied: “It is going to average around £38,000-a-year by the age of 66, which is a huge amount of money.”

Jeremy asked: “Are you in your 60’s now?” and Angela quickly revealed she is 63 years-old.

Jeremy addressed Angela: “There we go Angela we have the backing of Chris.”

Angela interrupted: “Well that’s the backbone of this entire argument is that I didn’t know.”

Earlier in the show Jeremy spoke to Louise Cooper, who told the host: “The vast majority of women affected are wealthy. You must remember that women live longer than men and yet we’ve retired five years earlier. That is not fair!”

She continued: “If you look at the money that men put into the system relative to the money women put into the system, it’s grossly unfair on men.

The BBC  have today announced their 2019 salary list which shows the top earners at the corporation. 

Gary Lineker tops the list with a whopping £1.75million wage, which hasn’t changed since last year. 

However, there has undoubtedly been a rise in payment out to some stars.

BBC director general Tony Hall confirmed the total talent bill had risen by £10million, however, he argued that it was a smaller proportion of total programming costs. 

He wrote in a blog: “They would earn significantly more elsewhere – and recent departures to commercial rivals show this argument isn’t hollow.

“The simple truth is we have spent more than ever on content, but the amount we have spent proportionally on talent has come down.

“But more importantly, whenever we ask the public whether they want big stars on the BBC they say yes. They say yes because they are talented and entertaining. They also say yes as it means they are getting big value from the BBC.”

Furthermore, stars including Jeremy Vine, John Humphrys and Steve Wright have all taken pay cuts. 

Despite this, there are plenty of stars who have found their fortunes increase over the past year, including Zoe Ball and Sara Cox.

The salary list comes just weeks after the BBC confirmed it would be dropping free licence fees for the over-75s.

At the time, they said it was needed to ensure they didn’t compromise on output, with Hall adding: “This has not been an easy decision. Whilst we know that pensioner incomes have improved since 2000, we also know that for some the TV license is a lot of money.

“I believe we have reached the fairest judgement after weighing up all the different arguments. It would not be right simply to abolish all free licences. Equally it would not be right to maintain it in perpetuity given the very profound impact that would have on many BBC services.”

At the time, the move caused considerable controversy across the country, with the likes of Piers Morgan calling for the plan to be scrapped. 

Today, people have flocked to Twitter to comment on their feelings for the BBC’s pay rises considering the recent cuts.

One shared: “The BBC publicly demonstrates that it overpays all of its ‘Top Earners’ equally. I’m sure all of the over-75s think they’re worth every penny.”

Another added: “HOW CAN THE @bbc DEFEND ONE MILLION POUND WAGE PACKETS with plans to scrap free TV licences for over-75s.”

“An increase in salaries while the @BBC wants to make over 75s pay for a TV Licence. Typical public service Gravy Train,” said a third. 

Elsewhere on the list, women broke into the top ten for the first time. 

Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman bagged £370,000 and was eighth on the list of the top 10 earners.

She was joined by Zoe Ball, who earned the exact same figure while Vanessa Feltz came 10th, with £355,000 for her efforts on BBC Radio 2. 

The likes of Jo Whiley, Gabby Logan and Lauren Laverne have also seen their pay increase dramatically.

ITV viewers tuned in to see This Morning hosted by Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby. 

Joining them for a discussion in the studio was Vanessa Feltz and Dr Ranj Singh as well as David Lammy MP who was live on telephone link. 

The topic up for debate was surrounding the controversy about BBC documentary presenter Stacey Dooley’s involvement with Comic Relief and the photos she had posted to her official instagram page. 

Following Feltz and Dr Ranj giving their opinions, viewers saw Schofield engage Lammy into the conversation and ask him about his stance on the issue since he had hit out at Dooley claiming “the world does not need any more white saviours”. 

Schofield said to the guests in the studio: “Take a pause there, one of the people that responded, David Lammy MP, is on the phone now.” 

Lammy was extremely passionate about getting his side of the argument across and on several occasions shut Schofield down when he tried to interject, to continue explaining his point. 

“Let’s just be clear, there is obviously a role for charity, and one celebrates people doing good causes particularly in Africa,” ITV viewers heard Lammy begin. “But there are big questions about how it is done.

“The form of Comic Relief sending out celebrities on expensive flights, beautiful white heroines with a black baby…who looks helpless, with no agency, no parents around, she is there as a white saviour. 

“It is a story that is now hundreds of years old and it’s precisely what keeps Africa poor. Comic Relief is not challenging the audience of how and why, it’s saying ‘sit back and give me some money’.” 

As Schofield went to interject and ask Lammy to clarify whether he was suggesting Comic Relief supporters should relinquish giving to charity, the MP was quick to explain: “I’m not saying that!” 

“Listen, listen to me, listen to me for a second,” Lammy urged Schofield, to which the latter then let him continue speaking. 

“You could have had some Africans talking about their country instead. You could film part of the night in the continent in Africa. Comic Relief has said they’re trying to make films with people in Africa, to work with black camera men and film, they are trying to make those steps. 

“Unfortunately, Stacey Dooley has ran into the same criticism as the likes of Ed Sheeran and Madonna,” Lammy continued. 

Schofield then interjected and strongly stated: “Comic Relief gave you the chance to go and you haven’t responded.” 

Lammy replied: “I have responded. I don’t want to be part of their PR machine, I said let’s wait and see what this years Comic Relief is like.” 

“Why wait? Would that be great for you as an intelligent, influential black man to have [helped] change it?” Schofield challenged. 

“Listen to me,” Lammy remarked but Phillip hit back: “No we haven’t got time, I just wanted your answer.” 

“I’m not a filmmaker,” Lammy defended. “There are thousands of African filmmakers and celebrities. My job is to raise the debate as a politician. 

“Comic Relief can easily do this if they get off their high horse and not rely on the BBC to do the same thing every year and changed their formula,” he argued. 

Schofield then returned the discussion to the studio and asked Dr Singh to have the last word. 

The doctor said: “David makes excellent points. My issue was with the tone [of the picture Dooley posted]. Her intentions were good.” 

Willoughby then added: “I feel so sorry for Stacey because she’s been caught in the middle of it.” 

It comes after Dooley posted several photos of her out in Africa working with Comic Relief to her Instagram profile. 

She was criticised by Lammy and accused of perpetuating the “white saviour” trope in a series of his Tweets. 

His initial comment said: “The world does not need any more white saviours. As I’ve said before, this just perpetuates tired and unhelpful stereotypes. Let’s instead promote voices from across the continent of Africa and have serious debate.” 

Dooley replied to the remark and asked: “David, is the issue with me being white? (Genuine question) …because if that’s the case, you could always go over there and try raise awareness? Comic relief have raised over 1 billion pounds since they started. 

I saw projects that were saving lives with the money. Kids lives.” 

And Lammy then explained in a thread: “Hi @StaceyDooley This isn’t personal and I don’t question your good motives. My problem with British celebrities being flown out by Comic Relief to make these films is that it sends a distorted image of Africa which perpetuates an old idea from the colonial era.” 

Comic Relief has commented on the claims made by Lammy and a spokesperson has told the press: “We are really grateful that Stacey agreed to go to Uganda to discover more about projects British people have funded there and make no apologies for this.

“In her film, people working with or supported by Comic Relief projects tell their own stories in their own words.

“We have previously asked David Lammy if he would like to work with us to make a film in Africa and he has not responded. The offer is still open.”

Actor Debra Messing has been slammed over reposting a tweet which boldly refers to Hillary Clinton as being a “modern-day Jesus” who was “betrayed and crucified” by Judas – also known as Bernie Sanders.

“Today @DebraMessing decided to share a tweet to her half-million followers accusing Bernie of being ‘Judas’ who ‘betrayed’ & ‘crucified’ the ‘modern-day Jesus’ (Hillary),” journalist Glenn Greenwald tweeted.

It came after Messing shared this tweet on her feed, which was originally written in April 2017 by the Twitter handle @MadamClinton.

Greenwald went on to call Messing’s action “as ugly, bigoted, and toxic as anything anyone got fired for doing this year.”

He then sarcastically noted another “parallel” between Jesus and Hillary Clinton.

“A lot of people don’t know that Jesus charged massive speaking fees to speak to money-changers before wrecking their tables in the temple and then casting them out,” he said.

Clinton has been cast in the spotlight numerous times over the years for excessive fees collected for turning up at events and saying a few words. Some of her speeches after leaving the post of secretary of state paid $ 200,000 a pop. All in all, she’s made many millions on the speaking circuit.

Meanwhile, Greenwald wasn’t the only one who was angered by Messing’s retweet. One person questioned whether the tweet was satire.

Another, well, they brought their grandpa’s farm into it.

And then there was this pun.

One person concluded that Messing simply can’t be considered “normal.”

Others pointed out that Sanders would be the more likely candidate to be compared to Jesus.

Messing has become a routine armchair activist when it comes to praising Clinton and slamming Trump, speaking out when Texas cut her name from a student curriculum and celebrating when a planned speech by Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulous was canceled at Berkeley – despite the university being the birthplace of free speech.

France has been gripped by rallies as Yellow Vests demand new concessions from the government. Hundreds of protesters, including the movement’s leader, were detained during the demonstrations.

Yellow Vest mayhem has hit the country for the 4th consecutive weekend. Protests in the capital this Saturday resulted in clashes between demonstrators and police, with officers resorting to tear gas. Hundreds were detained and taken into custody in the capital.

People in other regions have also risen up in protest.

One of the voices of the Yellow Vests, Julien Terrier, was detained during a rally in the city of Grenoble in southeastern France, the local police prefecture confirmed. He was among 18 people taken into police custody.

Later, up to 1,000 demonstrators marched to the local police station, chanting “free Julien Terrier.”

1,000 march in Marseille

About a thousand protesters gathered in the center of the southern city of Marseille. The march was relatively peaceful. “We are not here to break anything, we have to march openly, if we see anyone who [violates the order], he will be excluded,” one of the protesters said.

Tense atmosphere in Strasbourg

Yellow Vests occupied the center of the city, with police flocking to the area of the protest. “We want to ensure that people get together,” one of the movement’s leaders told the crowd.

Officers were seen in full gear getting ready to respond to clashes if necessary.

70 detained in Brussels

The spirit of the Yellow Vests demonstrations has even reached neighboring Belgium.

At least 70 people were detained in Brussels this Saturday. Protesters gathered in Arts Lois and Porte de Namur districts in the center of the city. Police said the detentions were merely a “preventive measure.”

It all got a bit much for Labour MP Clive Lewis who decided to simulate shooting himself in the head during a House of Commons debate on the finance bill.

The MP for Norwich South, and shadow treasury minister, was filmed shaking his head and laughing while his colleague Anneliese Dodds was interrupted by a Tory MP.

Lewis then molds his fingers into the shape of a gun, inserts them into his mouth before pretending to shoot himself in the head. The MP even shakes his body, to account for recoil.

The joke received a mixed reaction on social media, with some attacking the MP for ‘disrespect’ and conducting ‘behavior ill-befitting of an MP.’

While others, including the founder of the ‘MenandBoysCoalition’, defended Lewis, stating he just has a childish sense of humor. 

The MP’s particular brand of jokes has landed him in trouble in the past. He apologized after he was filmed saying to a man: “Get on your knees, bitch,” at a fringe event at the Labour Party Conference.
