A video showing a white woman in San Francisco reporting an 8-year-old girl to the police for selling water without a permit has gone viral, with people calling out the woman, dubbed ‘Permit Petty,’ for racial bias.

The footage posted by the girl’s mother on Saturday starts with her claiming that the white woman, who can be seen talking on the phone, is alerting police about the girl for selling portable water.

As soon as she approaches the woman to film her face, the caller squats behind a wall in a futile attempt to seek a cover.

“This woman don’t wanna let a little girl sell some water. She’s calling police on an 8-year-old little girl… you can hide all you want,” the girl’s mother said in the video.

As the two face off, the woman who is still on the phone says: “And illegally selling water without permit?” The brawl continues with the mother arguing that the girl did not violate any laws, as she was selling water on the family property.  The mother, identified by local media as Erin Austin,  said the woman didn’t believe the girl lived in the apartment building close to AT &T Park, where the baseball team the Giants was having a home game.

The video has been extensively liked and shared on Twitter and Instagram, with the majority of the commentators jumping to the girl’s defense and chiding the woman for what many see as racial bias and an example of white privilege. 

The girl’s cousin has started a hashtag #PermitPetty on Twitter, calling on those who sympathize with the girl to shame and out the woman. The post was picked up by a number of celebrities, including American actress and activist Gabrielle Union.

The cousin wrote on Twitter that the mother of the girl might file a harassment complaint against the woman.

Some commentators blamed US President Donald Trump for the incident.

While there has been a massive outpour of support for the girl, some pointed out that what the girl was still breaking the law. The cousin, who goes on Twitter by @_ethiopiangold, fired back, claiming that there were plenty of white males in the area that were selling merchandise and tickets, but the woman did not seem to care about whether they had a permit or not and opted to call the police on the little girl instead.

Thanking all who reached out with the messages of encouragement for the girl, she posted a video showing the eight-year-old with a cart full of bottled water.

‘Permit Petty’ has been compared to another white woman who was nicknamed BBQ Becky after she called police on two black men in Oakland, California, over a charcoal barbecue at Lake Merritt. A video of her call to police surfaced last month and reignited the debate over race.

Wenger broke off from the celebrations at his final home game as Arsenal manager to wish Ferguson a speedy and full recovery after the shock news the former Manchester United boss had undergone surgery following a brain haemorrhage. 

Ferguson, 76, is seriously ill after collapsing at home on Friday. 

He is in intensive care in a Salford hospital surrounded by wife Cathy and family. 

Less than a week earlier he had made a presentation to Wenger to commemorate his final visit to Old Trafford and his erstwhile rival said after the Gunners’ 5-0 win over Burnley: “I would like to send my best wishes to my fellow manager. 

“I was with him last week and he looked in perfect shape and he looked very happy. I wish him well and to recover very quickly.” 

Ferguson’s former No2 Brian Kidd, now a member of Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff at Manchester City, said: “You think Sir Alex is indestructible, we’ve all been brought up with him. 

“What he did for United was unreal and the pressure he was under every day to produce. It’s phenomenal. 

“You know him, you lads [the media] have had your run-ins with him but you know where he’s coming from, he wears his heart on his sleeve. 

“The opportunity he gave me, I’m always indebted to him.” 

Guardiola, whose Barcelona team beat Ferguson’s United in the Champions League finals of 2009 and 2011, said: “All the City fans, you cannot find one person who does not wish the best for an amazing person. 

“I was delighted to have dinner with him two weeks ago.” 

Former United captain Bryan Robson said: “It did come as a big shock. But from what I’ve heard the operation went well, so hopefully the boss will have a full recovery. 

“Everybody respects him highly for what he did in the game. Everyone thinks it was all this ‘hairdryer’ but the boss enjoys a good time, really enjoys his racing and is good company. 

“Ron Atkinson brought me to Manchester United but the boss had a big influence on me – and that prolonged my career.” 

Messages came from around the world, with the great Pele taking to Twitter with his good wishes. 

The 77-year-old wrote: “I woke up to hear that Sir Alex Ferguson is in hospital. A Man Utd man through and through. Get well soon, Sir Alex.” 

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp sent their best wishes after the Blues’ 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge yesterday. 

Conte said: “I am very sad. He’s not a normal person.” 

Klopp said: “I met Sir Alex after the first game against Roma. He passed my way. I had a few words with him. 

“When I heard it yesterday on the way to London I really couldn’t believe it. It can happen to all of us.” 

United tweeted last night: “Manchester United would like to thank the wider football world for the messages of support following the news that Sir Alex Ferguson underwent emergency surgery.”

Choosing to briefly set aside political differences, many Western countries – some of which the day before rallied to the UK’s call and expelled over a hundred Russian diplomats in total – offered their condolences.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.

“The thoughts and prayers of the British people are with the families who have lost loved ones in such terrible circumstances,” May wrote.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz became another leader to personally express his condolences to the grieving families. 

“My condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the terrible fire in the shopping mall in Kemerovo. It is tragic that so many children are dead or missing. I wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” Kurz wrote on Twitter.

The US, like many other countries, chose to appeal to the Russians through its foreign relations arm. 

“We offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the #Kemerovo tragedy. Our thoughts are with the people of Russia at this sad time,” State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert wrote on Twitter.

The French embassy in Moscow wrote that they are “shocked by the awful tragedy” that claimed the lives of many children. 

German Chancellor Angela Merkel conveyed Germany’s condolences in a telegram to Putin on Monday. 

“The people of Germany and I personally have heard about the appalling news regarding the serious fire disaster in Kemerovo which has left so many dead and injured,” she wrote.

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė “wished strength and fortitude to the victims’ families and loved ones,” in a statement issued by her press service.

In Riga, Latvia, the city Parliament held a minute of silence to commemorate the victims.

Saudi Arabian King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sent separate cables to Putin, with condolences and well-wishes for the injured.

“HRH Crown Prince expressed great sorrow for the fire and offered the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s deepest condolences and sympathies to the Russian people and the families of the dead, wishing the wounded a speedy recovery,” the cable sent by the Crown Prince read, as cited by the Saudi Press Agency.

Serbia President Aleksandar Vucic offered his country’s help in dealing with the blaze’s aftermath.

“Serbia, as a small country but a big friend, may provide any kind of assistance, we are ready to do what we can,” he said in a telegram to the Russian leader.

Leaders in Russia’s neighboring countries, including Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Moldova have all sent telegrams with condolences to the Kremlin. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the European Council also took the time to address the survivors.

President of the European Council Donald Tusk decided to offer his condolences in Russian.

“Today, we, Europeans, mourn together with Russian people the victims of the tragic fire in the city of Kemerovo, Western Siberia. Our thoughts and hearts with you!” he tweeted.
