Chalk up another milestone for the Vegas Golden Knights.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 30 saves for his 11th career playoff shutout, Shea Theodore scored in the first period and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Los Angeles Kings 1-0 on Wednesday night to win the franchise’s first playoff game.

The expansion club will try to take a 2-0 lead in its first-round playoff series Friday night.

“It’s another first for our organization, it’s a big playoff game and I love the way our team responded,” Vegas coach Gerard Gallant said. “Both goalies made some real key saves. It really wasn’t a 1-0 game, it was probably a 4-3 game for somebody, but the goaltending was excellent. Everybody had a big part of us winning the hockey game tonight.

Fleury got his first playoff shutout since last May, when his Penguins beat the Ottawa Senators 1-0 in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals.

“They’re a big team, they like to shoot from the points with a lot of guys in front of the net and trying to screen and tip pucks; maybe I got a few little more sticks in my legs than the [regular] season, and my face, but it’s all part of the playoffs,” Fleury said. “I felt good, but my teammates were great also. They helped me out a lot, blocking shots and grabbing guys in front of the net, so it makes my job a little easier.”

The Kings, who entered with a combined 928 games of playoff experience, outhit the Golden Knights, 68-59. But it was Vegas that came out looking like a seasoned bunch ready for the post-season. Just like the Golden Knights mascot who slayed a bumbling king at centre ice during a pregame show, Vegas was physical from the start.

William Carrier led the team with 10 hits, and Vegas’ aggressive forechecking kept Los Angeles off its game throughout. But Carrier’s diligence on the offensive end seemingly frustrated Los Angeles’ veteran defenceman Drew Doughty, who slammed his shoulder into Carrier’s jaw in the third period. The hit sent the left wing to the locker room for the remainder of the game, while drawing the ire of Gallant.

“Obviously we all seen what happened with the hit … I thought it was a bad hit, but it’s not for me to decide,” Gallant said. “The referee didn’t think it was a penalty, but I’m sure people will look at that hit and make a decision on it.”

The Golden Knights have dealt with a rash of injuries down the stretch of the regular season, including Carrier, who Gallant said is day-to-day.

Theodore got on the board 3:23 into the first. Tomas Nosek came from behind the goal to fire a pass to Theodore, and he blasted a wrist shot through traffic for the Golden Knights’ first playoff goal.

“It was a great play by Nosey and sometimes you’ve just got to get ’em on net and that’s kind of the goals that happened in the playoffs,” Theodore said. “We knew they were going to come out hard, they’re a physical team. But I feel we are, too. We’re a fast team and we can counter that. We were putting pucks in great positions … so when you can kind of put it in the corners and forecheck hard, I thought we did a good job of that tonight.”

The Kings, who were 0 for 3 with a man advantage, blew a chance to tie it in the second period, when Doughty’s rebound found Dustin Brown, who was staring into an empty net two feet away. He lifted his shot over the goal.

“I thought our guys played hard tonight and I thought we created some opportunities to get some offence, but I think we’ve got to make it a lot tougher on [Fleury] seeing the puck,” Kings coach John Stevens said. “They’re a good offensive team, they create on the rush, they create in the zone and their power play is dangerous. So, we’re going to have to be good defensively to have success in the series.”

Leon Draisaitl had a goal and two assists and McDavid added three assists as the Edmonton Oilers won their second game in a row, beating up on the Boston Bruins 7-4 on Thursday.

Combined with their 7-1 win over Dallas on Tuesday, the Oilers have 14 goals in their last two games. But the Edmonton captain says his team needs to tighten up in the defensive end.

“We can’t expect to keep doing that,” McDavid said about the recent scoring. “It’s good that we are finding ways to create offence, but we also gave up a lot of chances tonight. Giving up four goals is not good enough.”

Patrick Maroon had a pair of goals and Benoit Pouliot, Anton Slepyshev, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Milan Lucic also scored for the Oilers (37-24-9), who moved one point ahead of Calgary for third place in the Pacific Division.

“You need to have scoring from all over,” Draisaitl said. “You can’t rely on one or two lines. You need all four lines going and the last couple of games we have really had that. It is definitely a nice feeling to put up some goals like this.”

David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, Dominic Moore and David Krejci replied for the Bruins (38-27-6), who had a four-game winning streak snapped.

“We didn’t play well,” said Bruins assistant captain Patrice Bergeron. “I think it was just an awful game by everyone and it’s just proof that you can’t rely on what we’ve been doing lately.”

The Oilers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a pair of goals just 59 seconds apart by Maroon, who upped his career-high goal total on the season to 24.

Edmonton got another goal three minutes later as David Desharnais hooked around the net and sent the puck in front to Pouliot, who poked it past Boston goalie Tuukka Rask. It was Pouliot’s second goal in as many games after breaking a 28-game scoreless drought against Dallas on Tuesday.

Boston got one back on a power play of its own with seven-and-a-half minutes remaining in the opening frame when Marchand made a perfect pass to set up Pastrnak at the side of the net for his 31st goal of the season, and fifth in his last five games.

The Bruins made it 3-2 with two minutes left in the first, as Marchand was left alone at the side of the net to score his 37th goal of the season and 12th in his last 11 games.

The high-flying first still had one more goal left in it, as the Oilers scored with 51 seconds remaining with Slepyshev batting the rebound of a McDavid shot out of the air and past Rask.

Edmonton made it 5-2 two minutes into the second on the power play. Drake Caggiula’s pass went off of Bruin Riley Nash’s skate and was touched by Nugent-Hopkins on the way into the net. Caggiula was originally credited with the goal before it was changed. Rask was replaced in the Boston net by Anton Khudobin.

Boston fought back again a couple minutes later, getting a short-handed goal from Moore.

Draisaitl made it 6-3 Edmonton seven minutes into the second, picking off a pass at mid-ice and going the distance to score his 60th point, the most ever in an NHL season by a German-born player.

Edmonton added another power-play goal with five minutes left as a puck hit Lucic and got past Khudobin. It was the second game in a row that the Oilers have scored seven goals, and the first time they had done that at home since 1988.

Krejci scored on a Boston man advantage with 32 seconds left in the middle period.

There was no scoring in the third, but a brief scare when Boston forward Matt Beleskey was hit in the right side of the head with a shot from Bergeron in the game’s final minute. He was slow to get up, but skated off with the assistance of Bergeron.

The Oilers host Vancouver on Saturday while the Bruins are in Toronto on Sunday.
