CUPERTINO, Calif.—At 1 pm EST on Wednesday, September 7, Apple will host its first in-person, indoor launch event at the Steve Jobs Theater on the company’s Cupertino campus since before the COVID-19 pandemic began.

As has long been a tradition, we’ll be liveblogging the event on-site, so head back to this page when the event starts to follow along!

This being a September event, you can bet on one thing above all others: new iPhone models. Apple is expected to roll out the entire iPhone 14 lineup, including the Pro models. Rumor has it that the company will drop the mini size in favor of a new Plus or Max size for the regular iPhone 14 but that it won’t have many major changes otherwise.

What to expect at Apple’s ‘far out’ iPhone 14 event https://briefnews.eu/what-to-expect-at-apples-far-out-iphone-14-event/ https://briefnews.eu/what-to-expect-at-apples-far-out-iphone-14-event/#respond Fri, 02 Sep 2022 14:06:15 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/what-to-expect-at-apples-far-out-iphone-14-event/ Get ready for some major upgrades to the iPhone and Apple Watch lineup at Apple’s “Far Out” event next week. While last year’s iPhone 13 was a mostly marginal update (aside from fast ProMotion screens and Cinema Mode on the Pro models), the latest rumors suggest the iPhone 14 will be a considerable step forward. The iPhone 14 Pro may finally lose its notch! We could actually get higher resolution cameras! We’re also eager to see what, exactly, Apple means with its cryptic invite and star-laden imagery. Even if you’re not looking to upgrade, half the fun of these launch events is predicting what Apple has up its sleeves. So let’s speculate!

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro

Once again, we’re expecting to see four iPhone models, but the line-up will likely look different than the last few years. Not too long after the iPhone 13 hit stores, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that the iPhone 14 would be a “complete redesign,” which would mark the first major revision since the iPhone X landed in 2017. Additionally, Apple may be giving up on the iPhone Mini, a phone we’ve always wanted to love, but the short battery life has been a sticking point. Instead, Apple will reportedly unveil a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max or Plus, which will likely just have the same hardware as the standard iPhone 14.

While that’s unfortunate news for fans of tiny devices, the trend among most consumers is towards larger screens. Apple can’t let Samsung have all the fun, after all. Similarly, Apple could be taking a cue from the Galaxy phone maker (and practically every other Android phone company) by introducing pin-hole front cameras on the iPhone 14 Pro models. While early leaks pointed to two separate cut-outs — a circular one for the camera alongside a pill-shaped hole for the FaceID sensor — MacRumors claims (with support from Gurman) they’ll show up as a single pill-shaped cut out unified by software. (See image above.) Additionally, 9to5Mac reports that Apple is using the space in the middle of the cut-out for its privacy notification dots, which appear when an app is using your camera or microphone. On existing iPhones, those dots are shoved above the cellular reception bars.

Apple appears to be saving most of its big updates for the Pro iPhones. For one, they could have always-on screens, according to 9to5Mac. That could work well with the revamped lock screens we’ve seen in iOS 16, which now have room for widgets and far more customization than before.

More controversially, though, is a report claiming that only the Pro models will receive Apple’s new A16 Bionic chip. The standard iPhone 14 models may stick with last year’s A15 (which is still plenty powerful). As a cost-saving measure, that makes sense, especially chips and other components still in short supply. But it marks the first time Apple has introduced a major performance gulf between its iPhone models. (It’s particularly surprising since Apple was also able to squeeze the A15 chip into the tiny iPhone 13 Mini.) Most consumers won’t know the difference, but having a more powerful chip would clearly be a big draw for Pro models.

iPhone 13 Pro camera
David Imel for Engadget

Typically, Apple has used its camera technology as the big differentiator between the standard and Pro iPhones. That doesn’t appear to be changing. In addition to all of the upgrades above. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is planning to bump the Pro’s wide camera to 48-megapixels, a huge leap from the 12MP cameras the company has relied on for years. More recently, Kuo also claimed that the iPhone 14 Pro ultra-wide sensors will feature larger pixels with better low-light sensitivity. As for the base iPhone 14, it’s expected to get the six-element ultra-side camera from the iPhone 13 Pro.

And what are we to make of the “Far Out” text on Apple’s event invite? The ever-busy Kuo recently noted that Apple has completed testing on satellite connectivity for the iPhone 14, something that was also rumored to arrive ahead of the iPhone 13’s launch. Even though the hardware may be in place, Apple is reportedly still working on partner deals to unlock that connectivity. And while the idea of satellite support seemed wild last year, it makes more sense now that we’ve seen T-Mobile and SpaceX team up to offer emergency satellite support via StarLink. (Good news for iPhone 13 owners: Kuo claims those phones also have satellite hardware built-in.) Don’t expect to be FaceTiming via satellite, though, as the limited bandwidth will only leave room for short text messages and voice calls.

Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Pro

Much like the iPhone, all eyes will likely be on a “Pro” Apple Watch next week. Bloomberg’s Gurman reported in July that the new model could sport a larger 2-inch screen, more durable titanium case and battery life for up to two days, thanks to a new “low power” mode. If all that ends up being true, the Apple Watch Pro would also be significantly larger than the current Series 7 model. Given all of its new hardware, Gurman claims it’ll be the biggest redesign of the Apple Watch since the Series 4 landed in 2017. Don’t get your hopes up for a round design, though, it sounds like Apple is just evolving its current rectangular style.

The Apple Watch Pro is also rumored to include the new temperature sensor that’s rumored for the Watch Series 8. It could potentially alert you if you’re running a fever, and suggest that you see a doctor or use a dedicated thermometer for a more accurate reading. It could also be a useful resource for period and fertility tracking apps. Design-wise, the Series 8 isn’t expected to change much from last year’s models. It may end up running the same dual-core S7 chip as the Series 7, though some higher-end models could have an improved display.

AirPods Pro 2 case render
MacRumors

AirPods Pro 2

Given that we’re nearing three years since the launch of the AirPods Pro, it’s high time Apple followed up with a sequel. Gurman last year initially claimed the AirPods Pro 2 could have a stem-less design, much like Google’s Pixel Buds, but a more recent report from MacRumors suggests that the AirPods Pro 2 won’t look much different than before. Instead, leaked renders point to a new case with speaker holes (which would help with alerts for the “Find My” app) and a slot for a strap. The latter would be an anomaly for Apple, but it could be useful for attaching an AirTag. (Better yet, just build that into the case Apple!)

As for sound quality, Kuo claimed earlier this year that the AirPods Pro 2 could include support for Apple’s Lossless Audio (ALAC), which could be a draw for audiophiles. (Let’s not get into the viability of actually hearing any differences on small earbuds, though.) Additionally, the new headphones may include an updated H1 chip, as well as driver improvements similar to the AirPods 3. But don’t hold your breath for any health tracking features, as Gurman recently noted that they won’t include heart-rate or body temperature sensors as earlier rumors suggested.

9th-gen iPad
Nathan Ingraham/Engadget

iPad

Apple typically saves its biggest iPad news for its second fall event, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see some news about its entry-level model next week. The 10th-generation iPad is expected to include a USB-C port, bringing it in line with the rest of the family, and it could get a speed bump with the A14 Bionic chip. Don’t expect any major design changes, though, as the entry-level iPad doesn’t get much love from Apple these days. So be prepared to see thick bezels and a home button, once again. But on the plus side, it may finally get 5G support as well as a revamped front-facing camera, according to 9to5Mac.

Falcon and Winter Soldier’s Amy Aquino on Sam and Bucky’s Couples Therapy: ‘All of This Gold Was Coming Out’ https://briefnews.eu/falcon-and-winter-soldiers-amy-aquino-on-sam-and-buckys-couples-therapy-all-of-this-gold-was-coming-out/ https://briefnews.eu/falcon-and-winter-soldiers-amy-aquino-on-sam-and-buckys-couples-therapy-all-of-this-gold-was-coming-out/#respond Wed, 31 Mar 2021 23:14:51 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/falcon-and-winter-soldiers-amy-aquino-on-sam-and-buckys-couples-therapy-all-of-this-gold-was-coming-out/

As Zenon would say, Bucky Barnes is in crisis mode major on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

After decades of being brainwashed to murder against his will, he’s finally processing what’s been done to him through private sessions with his court-mandated therapist, Dr. Christina Raynor, played by Amy Aquino. Although Bucky isn’t exactly receptive to her — he lies about his nightmares and rails against her attempts to get through to him — Raynor is determined to help the ex-assassin before it’s too late. Given her past military experience and bouts with PTSD, she knows how bad things can get.

“That’s why she sees her job with Bucky as a life-and-death thing. If anybody’s likely to have PTSD, it’s probably the 106-year-old soldier who was made to kill people that he actually liked and believed in,” Aquino tells TVLine. “She just sees him as a person who needs help because she knows that when she went through it, she wasn’t a soldier, and she was just having to deal with these memories and having to find a way to hang on to herself and her humanity, despite the things that she was forced to do.”

Raynor is given one last chance to help Bucky before he embarks on a global mission alongside Sam to stop the Flag Smashers, who’ve created new Super Soldiers with a special serum. In a memorable scene during Episode 2, Raynor held an impromptu therapy session with both Bucky and Sam in jail — Bucky was arrested for missing a session with Dr. Raynor — with the hopes of planting the seeds that will allow Bucky to finally let down those metaphorical walls he’s been holding up.

Falcon Winter Soldier Recap“She uses Sam as the chink in the armor because this is a person he has a relationship with, and they had this shared relationship with [Steve Rogers’] Captain America, which is obviously the pivotal relationship in Bucky’s life,” Aquino explains. “She uses Sam as the battering ram to get through his armor, and it kind of works. It’s only the beginning because that’s the only time she has, but knowing that he and Sam are going to be working together, she can hope that they keep opening up.”

Without her regular office space or the usual tools to work with, Raynor relied on a couples therapy format to get the superhero duo to begin opening up to one another. According to Aquino, the humorous scene was just as fun to film as it was to watch, thanks to her co-stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan’s superb improvisational skills.

“Everybody was having fun with it,” she shares. “It was the moment that you could have fun with, but then they were able to let it go where it had to go, which is the big revelation that Bucky has. My biggest challenge was not stopping them too early because [director Kari Skogland] was letting them improvise. It would be insane not to with these two guys who are so smart and have such a strong relationship, because that’s where all of this gold was coming out.”

With the Falcon and the Winter Soldier headed out of town, Raynor’s 20-minute session will have to suffice for now. Whether or not she’ll return to provide more aid remains to be seen.

“Raynor sees that as likely her last chance with him,” Aquino concludes. “But, obviously, this universe is wide.”

Eddie’s decision not to visit Teresa in hospital following the attack from Judge Lafayette (David Andrews) already drew perturbed reactions from the audience in season four.

However, their brief reunion at the end of the season was met with suspicion, with some even suggesting he could be an undercover agent sent by the CIA to dismantle Teresa’s drug operation from the inside.

In a recent discussion on Twitter, Rodriguez indicated viewers’ hopes for a more Teresa and James-centric season could come to fruition.

One fan asked: “How different would season four have been if James had been in it?”

“How very unlikely,” Charlie sheepishly commented.

“I was thinking, ‘Would Charlie wander around the corridor of a hotel in a dressing gown?” Rachel asked.

“That’s one of those messages that could well have stayed where it was frankly,” Charlie said.

“It just made me laugh, I’m sorry,” the presenter replied.

The Undoing’s Nicole Kidman Breaks Down Grace’s ‘Horrible, Awful’ Day From Hell: ‘I Was Pretty Strung Out’ https://briefnews.eu/the-undoings-nicole-kidman-breaks-down-graces-horrible-awful-day-from-hell-i-was-pretty-strung-out/ https://briefnews.eu/the-undoings-nicole-kidman-breaks-down-graces-horrible-awful-day-from-hell-i-was-pretty-strung-out/#respond Mon, 02 Nov 2020 10:33:52 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-undoings-nicole-kidman-breaks-down-graces-horrible-awful-day-from-hell-i-was-pretty-strung-out/ Talk about Grace under pressure. For that tense, harrowing final sequence in Sunday’s The Undoing, director Susanne Bier informed Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, who star as seemingly perfect Manhattan couple Grace and Jonathan Fraser, that they had an extremely short period of time (we’re talking minutes) to nail the pivotal scene.

While shooting on location on the eastern tip of Long Island last year, Bier says she wanted Grace and Jonathan’s alternately terrifying and gut-wrenching “reunion” to take place during the haunting glow that only dusk could provide.

“There’s a half-hour period where the light actually has a blue color,” the auteur explains to TVLine. “And I decided, very unwisely, [to] shoot that scene [in that tight window]. And it’s a huge, friggin’ emotional scene. So we rehearsed it and we rehearsed it and then we waited for the light to kind of come down and we started shooting. We literally had a half-hour to shoot that whole scene.”

In the sequence, Grace is jolted when her fugitive hubby Jonathan — whom she just learned has been living a double life and maybe-possibly murdered his mistress — violently grabs her from behind, covers her mouth and proceeds to profess his innocence. When he finally releases his hand and Grace is allowed to speak, she unloads a torrent of anger, fear and grief on him.

Bier says she was blown away by the duo’s performances. “They both just went for it in a kind of crazy, crazy way,” she recalls, before adding of Kidman, “Here’s the thing about Nicole — she can go on forever. She’s unbelievable. I could have theoretically asked her to do that scene 15 times and she would have delivered an equally strong performance [each time]. But because of that whole crazy endeavor of shooting with the light coming down, I think, as far as I remember, we shot it three times.”

Below, Kidman shares her POV on shooting the emotional roller coster that was Episode 2.

TVLINE | Susanne told me you only had a half-hour to lock that final porch scene. Do you operate well under that kind of pressure?
I was pretty strung out by that stage, [just by] the nature of being in a whole series and the emotional journey that Grace goes on. It was interesting because it was so palpable. Hugh and I were both strung out. So the idea that there was this clock ticking… we just had to jump in and do it. I am very much a performer who goes, “OK, let’s do it. Let’s capture the magic, if there is any.” And that’s what we had to do in that regard. There were some questions about blocking, but once we were off and running we were in it. Susanne is rigorous. She pushes you, which is fantastic, because it [elevates] the quality. And also the location was gorgeous. It was isolated and bare and very Scandanavian in a strange way.

TVLINE | The scene requires you to go to so many different places emotionally in the span of just a few minutes. How did you thread that needle?
When someone disappears and there are all of these things that they have done to you — the lies — you have so many questions and there’s so much anger. Your whole life is completely ravaged, but [at the same time]… she is in love with him. So the desire for him to be telling the truth. The desire for him to not have done it is the underlying thing with her. To hear him say, “I had an affair but I didn’t do it. I did not kill this woman.” And for her it’s like, “Please let this be true. I’m so furious at you. You have destroyed everything and how dare you have an affair but My God you didn’t kill a person and I didn’t think you did.” Those are the things that are colliding. But then also you betrayed me, you destroyed our life, you destroyed our sons’ life, you are a liar… It’s a cataclysmic collision of emotions and intellect. And then there’s, “Are you going to kill me?!”

TVLINE | Grace had a day from hell. I mean, the hits just keep coming…
It’s horrible. All of it. It’s awful. [Laughs] They were lying in bed having a beautiful morning a day prior. [She’s like], “How can you do this to me? I trusted you with my life. I trusted you with my heart. I trusted you.” And it’s all just shattered. When I first read [the script] I didn’t realize what it was going to take for it to be completely real. And I also didn’t know that Susanne was gonna shoot it the way she shoots it where she almost goes into my head. It’s like, “Oh my God you’re inside me.”

TVLINE | Did it make you uncomfortable when she said, “OK, I’m going to shoot an extreme close-up of your eyeballs.”
I just want to do true work. I want to work with someone who is going to mine and explore and put all of their passion [into a project]. I want to work with artists. So I am totally open to people who have that same passion and that same desire. I’m really attracted to it and I desire it and I feel very safe when I am with somebody like that. What I don’t like is when I work with someone that is a bit nonchalant and doesn’t really care. Then I’m like, “This is not the right combination.” Because I’ll go home and night and my dreams will be affected and my whole life gets affected. But that’s my artistic choice and that’s my commitment to what I do. And Susanne is like that. So I was like, “Whatever you need to do to tell this story so that people will feel it. Not just watch it from a distance but go on a journey and feel it.” That’s what we hoped for.

Who else has been hinted to be taking back in the 2020 series of I’m A Celeb?

BBC Breakfast’s meteorologist Carol Kirkwood has exceedingly good odds to be taking part this year, and as fans know, she’s not afraid of a challenge having taken part in Strictly Come Dancing.

Vernon Kay has also been teased, as has professional dancer AJ Pritchard, but the star people most want to see thrown into the jungle is Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan.

This year’s series has been given a huge cash injection, and after Piers joked he wouldn’t go on the ITV reality show for less than £5 million, the odds are looking good.

I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! will return to ITV later this year.
