  • Otto Warmbier was a US university student who was detained and sentenced to hard labor in North Korea in 2016.
  • He was released home last year after performing 17 months out of his 15-year prison sentence, and died days after his return.
  • Donald Trump told reporters in Singapore after meeting Kim Jong Un that Warmbier “did not die in vain.”

Donald Trump has said that his historic summit with Kim Jong Un would not have happened with Otto Warmbier, the US university student who was detained and tortured in North Korea for 17 months.

In a solo press conference following his meeting with the North Korean leader, Trump said:

  • North Korean defector Ji Seong-ho met and embraced Fred Warmbier, father of Otto Warmbier — the US student who died days after his release from a North Korean prison.
  • Fred was invited by Vice President Mike Pence for the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Though the atrocities committed by the North Korean regime are numerous and well-documented, stories like North Korean defector Ji Seong-ho’s inspires hope for those suffering under political oppression.

And as Seong-ho returned to South Korea after making a rousing appearance at President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address last week, he was met with the father of another victim who suffered at the hands North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Smart lock maker Otto folds before releasing its first product https://briefnews.eu/smart-lock-maker-otto-folds-before-releasing-its-first-product/ https://briefnews.eu/smart-lock-maker-otto-folds-before-releasing-its-first-product/#respond Tue, 02 Jan 2018 13:44:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/smart-lock-maker-otto-folds-before-releasing-its-first-product/

On a landscape increasingly driven by smart devices, a digital smart lock seemed like an obvious addition to the raft of home automation products already on the market. But Otto, the company that came closer than any other to making the product a sellable reality, has now closed its doors — just four months after showing off its device to the world.

Otto founder and CEO Sam Jadallah reveals in a lengthy Medium post, titled “So Close“, that the startup came so close to getting its digital lock on the market that there’s a warehouse full of them ready to go. But the company was due to be acquired by a bigger firm — one with more resources and experience — and the deal fell apart at the last minute. There was no Plan B, so in the warehouse the product stays and, as reports on Twitter suggest, most of Otto team are left out of work.

No names have been mentioned regarding the acquisition, and frustratingly for Otto, the buyer apparently never gave a reason for its decision to pull out of the deal. But there’s no doubt that all parties involved had confidence in the product’s potential, even with its $ 699 price tag, which the company believed was made more palatable by the $ 1,000 iPhone normalizing the high cost of must-have tech.

Speaking to Techcrunch, Jadallah points to the volatility of Silicon Valley as a fact of life for startups, and notes that even those onto a sure thing aren’t immune from it. “The life of the startup is a binary thing. To go from what could be an incredible high to crushing low in a matter of hours is what we do.” Still, despite its failure to launch, the product got interest — serious interest. It’s only a matter of time before another company takes smart home locks mainstream, or as Otto would undoubtedly prefer, steps in to put the locks stored in that warehouse on doors, where they belong.

‘Harshest sanctions ever’: US House passes ‘Otto Warmbier’ sanctions against N. House lawmakers have overwhelmingly passed the “harshest sanctions ever” targeting Pyongyang’s access to global financial markets. The bill was named after US student Otto Warmbier, who died in June following his release from custody in North Korea.

The Otto Warmbier North Korea Nuclear Sanctions Act was passed in the House of Representatives on Tuesday evening, supported by 415 lawmakers, with two votes against. The act was designed to “impose the most far-reaching sanctions ever directed at North Korea,” according to Republican Andy Barr, who introduced the bill.

The sanctions are aimed at putting more economic pressure on North Korea for its missile and nuclear programs. The Otto Warmbier Act would ban any foreign entity that conducts business or cooperates with North Korea from doing business with US companies.

The intrigue deepens surrounding the early 2016 discussions between Uber’s acquisition of a self-driving trucking company, Otto, according to newly-released court documents. Otto was founded by two then-high-level Google engineers.

Waymo now says that Uber is dragging its feet about providing evidence that may shed light on how, exactly, the company went about trying to sign a deal with the nascent Otto last year. In addition, excerpts of released transcripts from a recent deposition of an Uber executive show that the company was willing to act as a legal shield for its two soon-to-be employees—known as “indemnification”—if Google came after Uber following the deal to acquire Otto.

The filings come less than two weeks after a hearing in the ongoing Waymo v. Uber lawsuit. The suit involves the Google subsidiary sued Uber, alleging that one of its former employees, Anthony Levandowski, stole 14,000 proprietary files and took them to his new startup. However, Uber says it never received the files, and so it couldn’t have, and didn’t, implement them into its own products, services, or prototypes.

Salon removes article calling Otto Warmbier ‘America’s idiot fratboy’ https://briefnews.eu/salon-removes-article-calling-otto-warmbier-americas-idiot-fratboy/ https://briefnews.eu/salon-removes-article-calling-otto-warmbier-americas-idiot-fratboy/#respond Tue, 20 Jun 2017 22:59:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/salon-removes-article-calling-otto-warmbier-americas-idiot-fratboy/ FILE PHOTO - Otto Frederick Warmbier, a University of Virginia student who has been detained in North Korea since early January, attends a news conference in Pyongyang, North Korea, in this photo released by Kyodo February 29, 2016. Left-leaning website Salon has removed a controversial 2016 article criticizing Otto Warmbier, the 22-year-old American student who died after being imprisoned for 17 months in North Korea for attempting to take a sign.

In a statement on Tuesday, Executive Editor Andrew O’Hehir told Business Insider that the site chose to remove the article, titled “This might be America’s biggest idiot frat boy: Meet the UVa student who thought he could pull a prank in North Korea,” noting the article was a write-up of a segment on the Nightly Show, a late night talk show that ran on Comedy Central from 2015 to 2016.

O’Hehir said he wasn’t aware of the article until Tuesday.

“It was a 200-word post wrapped around the March 2016 Larry Wilmore clip about Warmbier, one of numerous late-night roundup pieces Salon and many other sites post over the weekend,” O’Hehir said.

“It contained no original reporting, opinion or analysis on the Warmbier case and was entirely based on the Wilmore segment,” he added. “Furthermore, we had significant editorial turnover during 2016 and no one on our current staff had anything to do with publishing that piece. I don’t think anything in it was inaccurate: Wilmore said the things he said. But under the circumstances, it seemed respectful and appropriate to remove it.”

Right-wing media critics were up-in-arms this week over a handful of op-eds among relatively obscure bloggers criticizing Warmbier for deciding to steal the sign and arguing he demonstrated ignorance about real-world consequences in the strict dictatorship.

The most high profile recognition the argument received came courtesy of Wilmore, who joked that he felt little sympathy for Warmbier, dubbing him “Otto von Crybaby” and noting that he stole the sign partially as an initiation prank to join a secret club at the University of Virginia.

“Dudes if you’re hazing includes international crimes, you’ve got to read the fine print on your frat bro warranty,” Wilmore said. “Frat bro privilege not valid in totalitarian dystopias.”

Since Warmbier was detained, the State Department has ratcheted up travel restrictions to the country, while there is legislation in Congress to limit American travel to North Korea.

Fallout From Death Of Otto Warmbier https://briefnews.eu/fallout-from-death-of-otto-warmbier/ https://briefnews.eu/fallout-from-death-of-otto-warmbier/#respond Tue, 20 Jun 2017 15:58:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fallout-from-death-of-otto-warmbier/

A number of travel agencies that organize tours to North Korea say they are reviewing whether to continue to take tourists from the United States into the country following the death of an American student.

Otto Warmbier, who went on a trip to North Korea in January 2016, was accused of stealing a poster at his hotel in Pyongyang, and following a short trial was sentenced to 15 years of prison and hard labor. Last week, 17 months later, he was released by North Korea in a state of coma and on Monday he died in a hospital in Ohio.

North Korean travel agencies, including Young Pioneer Tours, which organized the group tour Warmbier was a part of, have released statements expressing their sympathies. Hours after his family said that the 22-year-old had died, Young Pioneer Tours said that the risk for Americans visiting North Korea “has become too high” and that it would stop taking US citizens into the country.

The company said in a statement, “The way his detention was handled was appalling, and a tragedy like this must never be repeated. Despite constant requests, we were denied any opportunity to meet him or anyone in contact with him in Pyongyang, only receiving assurances that he was fine. There has still been almost no information disclosed about his period in detention. Considering these facts and this tragic outcome we will no longer be organizing tours for US citizens to North Korea.”

In the FAQ section of the company’s website, Young Pioneer Tours promotes North Korea as “probably one of the safest places on Earth to visit provided you follow the laws as provided by our documentation and pre-tour briefings.”

Other tour operators say they are still reviewing whether to continue taking Americans on organized tours to North Korea. Koryo Group, a Beijing-based company that is among the largest tour operators for Chinese and Western tourists, said it condemned the “distressing and horrifying” condition in which Warmbier was released by North Korea.

Koryo Group, which claims to be “world’s leading travel specialist to DPRK,” has taken more than 20,000 Westerners on tours of North Korea, according to the Financial Times. A representative for the company’s office in Beijing refused to say if US tourists currently booked for North Korea trips have expressed concerns or canceled reservations following the news about Warmbier, but said it was also reviewing its policy on visitors from the US.

“We are discussing this matter frankly with our Korean travel partners, and the foreign organizations active in Pyongyang that we liaise with, and are currently reviewing the issue of US citizens traveling to North Korea,” Koryo Tours posted in a statement online. “We continue to take all steps necessary to ensure those who travel with us are fully aware of the risks involved and have all the information they need.”

Uri Tours, which has its headquarters in Kearny, New Jersey, and promotes the Pyongyang Marathon and ski trips to Masik Pass in North Korea, also said it was “reviewing its policies for DPRK travel for American citizens.”

Lupine Travel, a UK-based tour company that “specializes in unique destinations,” including Turkmenistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Chernobyl, said its client base is mainly made up of Europeans and it takes very few Americans to North Korea. “At the moment we have not made a decision whether to continue to facilitate trips there for US citizens,” Dylan Harris, the managing director for the company, told BuzzFeed News. “But we are reviewing it at the moment and will make a decision in the next few days.”

Although a vast majority of visitors to North Korea are from neighboring China, North Korea has been trying to lure more international visitors in recent years.

Last month, two US congressmen introduced a bill that would ban American tourists from visiting North Korea, in part aimed at cutting off the regime’s source of foreign currency and preventing the government from holding US citizens as bargaining chips.

“Tourist travel to North Korea does nothing but provide funds to a tyrannical regime— that will in turn be used to develop weapons to threaten the United States and our allies, as I saw firsthand on a rare visit to Pyongyang,” Rep. Joe Wilson, a congressman from South Carolina, said in a statement about the bill. “Worse, the regime has routinely imprisoned innocent foreign civilians and used them as bargaining chips to gain credibility with the West. We should not enable them any longer — which is why it is critical to carefully regulate travel to North Korea.”

Rep. Adam Schiff, who cosponsored the bill, said that the ongoing tensions with the North Korean government meant the danger that Americans could be detained for political reasons was greater than ever. “Given North Korea’s continuing destabilizing behavior and their demonstrated willingness to use American visitors as bargaining chips to extract high-level meetings or concessions, it is appropriate for the United States to take steps to control travel to a nation that poses a real and present danger to American interests,” he said.

The bill, which is called the North Korea Travel Control Act, would require licenses for any US citizen to travel to the country, and it would ban issuing licenses for all US tourists.

Although Americans are allowed to visit North Korea, the US State Department continually warns its citizens that traveling there comes with serious risk of arrest and long-term detention.

‘Risk too high’: Tour agency that sent Otto Warmbier to N. The Chinese travel agency that organized Otto Warmbier’s trip to North Korea has announced it will no longer accept Americans for tours. It comes following the American student’s death after his release from 17 months’ detention in North Korea.

Young Pioneer Tours adventure travel company, based in China, reconsidered its position on taking US citizens on tours to North Korea and will no longer organize their trips to the country, according to the agency’s statement published on Tuesday.

“Now, the assessment of risk for Americans visiting North Korea has become too high,” the agency wrote on Facebook, following “the devastating loss of Otto Warmbier’s life.” The company also noted that no previous detainment of a tourist in North Korea “has ended with such tragic finality” and emphasized this must not be repeated.

University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier passed away on Monday after he returned to his home country with severe neurological trauma, following a long-term coma. During his detention in North Korea there had been no information about his condition, the travel agency said.

“Despite constant requests, we were denied any opportunity to meet him or anyone in contact with him in Pyongyang, only receiving assurances that he was fine,” Young Pioneer Tours wrote. “There has still been almost no information disclosed about his period in detention,” the statement adds.

Warmbier went to North Korea for a five-day trip in January 2016. During the visit, he was arrested on charges that he had stolen a political banner and was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. He was released and medically evacuated to the US on June 13, due to his serious health condition.

Two more American citizens are currently in North Korean prisons. In April, North Korean officials detained Kim Sang Dok, a US accounting professor, over charges of “criminal acts of hostility” targeting the North Korean government.

A South Korea-born businessman and naturalized United States citizen, Kim Tong Chul, was arrested in October 2015 and was sentenced to 10 years of hard labor on charges of espionage and subversion.

Tensions between Washington and Pyongyang have increased in recent months. While North Korea has stepped up missile tests, the US has boosted its military presence on the Korean Peninsula. The US has conducted a series of military drills with North Korea’s neighbors, Japan and South Korea.

The escalation of tensions has caused growing concern from Russia and China, who both have a border with North Korea, and are urging all parties not to escalate the situation further.

Seoul (AFP) – The tour agency that took US student Otto Warmbier to Pyongyang said Tuesday it would stop taking Americans to the reclusive state after the 22-year-old died following 18 months in North Korean detention.

Warmbier was medically evacuated to the United States last week, suffering from severe brain damage. He died six days later in his home town of Cincinnati, Ohio, with US President Donald Trump blaming Pyongyang’s “brutal regime” for his plight.

“We have been struggling to process the result,” Young Pioneer Tours, the China-based travel agency that had taken Warmbier to the North, said in a Facebook post.

The University of Virginia student was arrested at the airport as he was leaving Pyongyang in January last year and sentenced to 15 years of hard labour at a show trial for stealing a political poster from a hotel.

“There had not been any previous detainment in North Korea that has ended with such tragic finality,” the company said, adding that Warmbier’s death had made it “reconsider” its position on accepting American tourists.

“Now, the assessment of risk for Americans visiting North Korea has become too high,” it said, adding, “we will no longer be organising tours for US citizens to North Korea.”

The agency based in the Chinese city of Xian was founded in 2008 by a British expat with a motto of taking adventurous travellers to “the places your mother wants you to stay away from” including the North and Iran.

One of a few tour agencies that visit the North, the firm offers trips that include scuba diving and cycling in one of the world’s most impoverished countries.

Severe brain injury

The company, which advertised the North as “probably one of the safest places on Earth to visit,” came under fire after Warmbier was medically evacuated to the US in a coma after a flurry of secret diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang.

The North claimed Warmbier fell into a coma soon after he was sentenced last year, saying he had contracted botulism and been given a sleeping pill.

Medical tests carried out last week in the United States offered no conclusive evidence as to the cause of his neurological injuries, and no evidence of a prior botulism infection. Warmbier’s doctors said he had suffered extensive tissue loss in all regions of his brain, but showed no signs of physical trauma.

They said Warmbier’s severe brain injury was most likely — given his young age — to have been caused by cardiopulmonary arrest cutting the blood supply to the brain.

Warmbier’s death came amid high tension over the North’s recent series of missile tests, with Pentagon chief Jim Mattis describing the nuclear-armed state as “a clear and present danger to all.”

It also brought attention to dire human rights records of the country ruled by the young leader Kim Jong-Un, who took over after the death in 2011 of his father and longtime ruler, Kim Jong-Il, in a third-generation power transfer.

Three more US citizens are being held by the North. Two were teachers at a Pyongyang university funded by overseas Christian groups, and the third is a Korean-American pastor who was accused of espionage for the South.

The North has customarily released US detainees after visits by high-profile political figures including former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.
