Britain’s behavior in the Skripal poisoning scandal is “a major danger to international peace,” believes Willy Wimmer, who held the vp position with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) assembly from 1994 to 2000, and who had previously served as state secretary to Germany’s defense minister.
“I think we would call this state a mafia state because it is against all European and international rules and regulations how the British government has behaved in a criminal case with regard to another country,” Wimmer told RT.
The UK has a history of pressing forward warmongering rhetoric, Wimmer said, recalling Britain’s decision to go to war in Iraq. “We, as Europeans, have an experience with the British. We only have to look back to Tony Blair. They lie from one war into the next one.” The long awaited Chilcot report, published in 2016, offered a damning critique of Blair, stating that he deliberately exaggerated the threat posed by the Iraqi regime and had relied on “flawed” intelligence.
“And that is why I think as long as the British don’t behave in a proper, legal, international way, I think we all should believe that this is another British lie, at least to go for war against Russia,” Wimmer added.
The former OSCE assembly vice-president said the EU’s position of standing in solidarity with the UK was standard allied behavior but warned the bloc might think twice before doing so again in the future.
“If a country asks for solidarity and for support, it is given by the others because otherwise you can’t run certain organizations like EU or NATO. What the British are doing – the government of Theresa May is exploiting this will of solidarity, which is a basic foundation of the European Union and NATO.”
“This is a blow to the European solidarity and this is a blow to the European Union as well as NATO. They will never do it again.”
The European Union previously rushed to stand by UK’s ‘belief’ that Moscow was ‘likely’ behind the Salisbury attack on March 4, despite the failure by experts at the British chemical weapons laboratory at Porton Down to link the samples of the nerve agent to Russia.

Russia has demanded that the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) take concrete steps to ensure press freedom in Latvia, after the Baltic state deported a Russian documentary maker without explanation.
“We hope you will immediately take measures within your mandate to change this approach of Latvia authorities towards Russian journalists. Declarations are not enough, actions are highly needed,” tweeted the Russian foreign ministry Friday night, in response to an OSCE statement published earlier.
.@OSCE_RFoM We hope you will immediately take measures within your mandate to change this approach of #Latvia authorities towards #Russian journalists. Declarations are not enough, actions are highly needed.

Olga Kurlaeva, a documentary maker for Russian state television company VGTRK, was this week placed under guard, taken to a deportation center, had her visa annulled, and then whisked to the Russian-Latvian border and set free on the other side in the middle of the night. Her husband, Anatoly, also a journalist, was deported along with her.
Harlem Desir, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, wrote in an open letter to Riga that “Free access to information and free flow of information between the participating States contribute to the freedom of the media in the OSCE region and are an essential part of the broad concept of security on which the organization is based.”
“That’s why I call on the authorities to reconsider the use of restrictive and selective measures in relation to foreign journalists who pursue their professional activities,” continued the text, which has been published on the OSCE website. Desir expressed particular alarm as “the reasoning for such restrictive actions in both cases lacks transparency and remains unclear.”
Previously, the Russian foreign ministry appealed to the OSCE to resolve the situation before it spirals out of control, with Moscow warning it would have to resort to “retaliatory measures.”
Latvian authorities said it’s their right not to explain their decision in a public statement, and asked Brussels to cancel Kurlaeva’s Schengen Area multiple entry visa.
The journalist said she had been treated well by security personnel but was given no explanation about the decision, other than that “it came from above.” She has produced several documentary films criticizing Baltic politicians and the treatment of Russian-speaking minorities in the former Soviet Republics. She was conducting filmed interviews on a legal visa when she was detained and deported.

“Branding media entities as ‘foreign agents’ is a dangerous practice, as it can narrow the space for freedom of the media,” said Harlem Desir, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s (OSCE) Representative on Freedom of the Media, in a statement on Thursday. The official then expressed his “concern” about measures taken by the US and Russia “requiring the media entities from other countries to register themselves as ‘foreign agents.’”
Registration of media outlets as foreign agents is not acceptable, Desir said, expressing further concerns over “pieces of legislation, while originally designed for non-media actors, … being extended to cover the media,” the OSCE said in its statement.
The OSCE media representative then warned that registration as a foreign agent would most likely impose “additional administrative burdens” upon the affected media organization as well as would “stigmatize” their journalists. “I call on both the Unites States and the Russian Federation to reconsider and refrain from requiring media entities to register as ‘foreign agents’ and not take further steps,” he said, as he offered his assistance to both countries in resolving the issue.
Desir also asked both the US and Russia to clarify the reasons behind the labeling, as well as the consequences it can have for the media’s ability to operate freely in both countries.
The OSCE decided to voice its criticism right after the reciprocal moves had been taken by Russia, after staying silent for months while RT was facing pressure from the US government.
The exchange was started by the US, which targeted RT America amid the ongoing hysteria over Russia’s alleged influence on the US 2016 presidential elections. It was also the US, which demanded that RT registered under the 1938 piece of legislation initially designed to counter pro-Nazi propaganda.
Finally, it was Washington that threated RT with staff arrests, property seizures and legal action in case it fails to comply with the US Justice Department’s demands before November 13. Faced with the ultimatum, RT ultimately had to register as a foreign agent in the US.
In response, the Russian lawmakers passed a law requiring foreign mass-media outlets operating in the country to register as foreign agents. Following the move, the Russian Justice Ministry sent letters to nine media outlets, informing them it is possible they might have to register.
At the same time, RT’s editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan, offered her condolences on Wednesday to all journalists “at all media organizations – Russian and foreign alike – who have been caught up in Washington’s political games.”
Asked for comment in November, when the witch hunt targeting RT was already in full swing, the office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media said it has “just” been notified about RT’s registration as a foreign agent in the US. It refused to provide any comment on the issue at that time.
A number of institutionalized journalist associations, including the US Press Association and the National Union of Journalists in the UK and Ireland, also preferred to stay away from trouble by refusing to comment.
The pressure exerted on RT by the US government did not go entirely unnoticed, however. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an international rights group, called RT’s registration as a foreign agent a “troubling precedent.”
Chris Hedges, a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist, New York Times bestselling author and former professor at Princeton University, denounced it as “one of the most horrendous blows to press freedom since the anti-communist witch hunts of the 1950s.”
NSA whistleblower William Binney also criticized Washington’s move and called it a direct violation of the First Amendment and freedom of speech.

“We know that the mentioned crew deviated from the main route and moved along side roads, which is prohibited by the mandate of the OSCE SMM,” the press service reported, as cited by the news agency.
The blast was “strong enough to penetrate an armored vehicle,” an unnamed OSCE official was quoted as saying by AFP.
The explosion was initially reported by a local militia, which also said one person had been killed. The car reportedly drove over a mine near the village of Prishib.
Both the Ukrainian military and anti-government forces were observing a ceasefire at the time of the incident, according to the Ukrainian representative of the Joint Center for Control and Coordination (JCCC).
“The Ukrainian side expresses condolences to the families of the victims,” the JCCC’s press service said in a statement on Facebook.
Despite the JCCC statement, both sides put blame for the incident on the other. While the Lugansk authorities say the blast was organized by the Ukrainian military, Kiev says the “rebels” are constantly trying to impede the work of the OSCE mission. LNR also stated that it has repeatedly warned the observers about possible “provocations” from the Ukrainian armed forces.
The OSCE’s SMM to Ukraine was deployed in March of 2014 to observe and report on the situation in the east of the country and facilitate dialogue between all parties involved in the ongoing conflict there.
The mission has previously come under fire at least seven times since the beginning of 2017, its representative told Sputnik.
This is the first time a monitor has been killed.
The conflict in eastern Ukraine broke out in the spring of 2014 after a wave of deadly protests led to an armed coup that ousted the elected government in Kiev. The new government sent troops to the Lugansk and Donetsk regions, which were unwilling to recognize the coup-installed authorities. The turmoil has claimed the lives of nearly 9,800 people since then, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The mission has registered an “uptick in violence starting from the early morning hours on Sunday”, January 30, Hug said during an interview with RT, adding the OSCE experts have recorded “thousands” of instances of fire exchange and shellings.
The warring parties used various heavy artillery pieces, “including the most indiscriminate ones – the Grad systems,” Hug said, referring to the Soviet-made BM-21 multiple rocket launchers.
The OSCE mission deputy head also stressed that the latest escalation of violence has led to the “severe suffering” of civilians caught in the area engulfed by hostilities.
“Electricity in the area… is cut off and people are freezing there in their apartments. They have no heating, limited water supplies,” he told RT.
Hug called on both sides “to show restraint and allow the repair crews to re-establish utility services.” He also expressed regret that both the Ukrainian government forces and the rebels “are violating the Minsk Agreements in many aspects.”
“The heavy weapons should have long been withdrawn at least 15 km away from the contact line. Earlier this morning when I was at the contact line I heard both incoming and outgoing heavy weapon [fire] that clearly shows that both sides used their weapons in the areas where they should not be,” he told RT.
He also said “the close proximity of the [opposing] forces in that specific area, where the violations have been registered on Sunday is one of the major causes for this escalation.”
At the same time, he said, the sides are apparently able to stop the violence “at a very short notice,” as the OSCE monitoring groups witnessed on Wednesday that the number of ceasefire violations “dropped from thousands to only few in a matter of hour or so to allow some initial repair works to take place in the affected area.”
The deputy head of the OSCE mission reiterated that the Ukrainian conflict “can only be solved and should only be solved at the negotiations table.”
The latest major outbreak was allegedly caused by an attack from Ukrainian paramilitary units supported by the army and involved intense fighting around the town of Avdeevka, which is located close to the disengagement line between pro-Kiev forces and the rebels in the east as well as shelling the city of Donetsk.
Ukraine’s deputy defense minister admitted its troops were slowly advancing on rebel positions. He claimed, however, that the steps were provoked by actions from anti-Kiev forces.
The conflict in eastern Ukraine ignited in 2014, when people in two regions rejected a nationalist-driven armed coup in Kiev, which imposed a new government hostile to Moscow and the Russian-speaking population of the East.
The new authorities launched a military crackdown, which led to a bloody conflict that has so far claimed around 10,000 lives, according to UN estimates.
A ceasefire and roadmap for reconciliation were negotiated in 2015 with the help of Russia, France and Germany. The so-called Minsk agreement imposed an OSCE-monitored withdrawal of heavy weapons, which was supposed to be followed by a blanket amnesty for the rebels, a constitutional reform granting the rebellious regions greater autonomy, local elections, and finally, the return of sovereignty over the regions to Kiev.
