At least 120,000 people have attended the funeral of Aleksandr Zakharchenko, the leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, who was killed by an explosion in a cafe in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk on Friday.

Zakharchenko’s remains were placed on display in the lobby of the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre in the center of Donetsk. It is not far from Cafe Separ, where the leader of the self-proclaimed DPR was murdered.

Over 120,000 people came to bid farewell to the assassinated leader, a spokesperson for the city council confirmed to reporters.

People were seen carrying flowers for the farewell ceremony of the Donbass leader. “[We have] nothing but tears! We do not know what to say,” three women from Yasynovataya town in Donetsk region told RIA Novosti.

“How could this [murder] ever happen?! In the center of the city where many mothers walk with children, where ordinary people walk!” another grieving woman exclaimed. Zakharchenko was married, and is survived by four sons.

Moscow condemned the murder of 42-year-old Zakharchenko, adding that it could be detrimental to the whole peace process in Ukraine. “It is a blatant provocation aimed at undermining the implementation of the Minsk Agreement in eastern Ukraine,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Saturday.

Zakharchenko had headed the DPR since November 2014, when a crisis broke out in Ukraine following a coup d’etat that ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Donetsk province, along with neighboring Lugansk, engaged in open conflict with Kiev as they refused to accept the new government following the 2014 coup, establishing self-proclaimed republics. Zakharchenko had previously survived several assassination attempts.

On Tuesday night, the LAPD shot and killed 48-year-old Konstantin Morozov, ending a manhunt that started after his estranged wife, Natalia Morozova, was found dead in the town of Santa Maria on Monday evening. Media reports said Morozov was suspected of murder and the abduction of his son Daniel, who was with Konstantin but unharmed in the incident. Daniel was then placed into the protective custody of the Department of Family and Children Services in Los Angeles County.

In a letter personally addressed to the commander-in-chief, Daniel’s uncle Andrey wrote that his family had just been through an “appalling tragedy.” Upon hearing the news, he immediately flew to Los Angeles to take care of Daniel, only to be denied access to the boy by Child Protective Services (CPS).

“I have always treated Daniel like my own son, seeing him regularly when I visited my brother and also when they visited me in Moscow. I talked to the boy every week by phone or Skype,” Morozov wrote to Trump.

“I want to protect my nephew and help him to get through everything that’s happened. I want him to grow up in atmosphere of warmth and care, surrounded by his relatives and friends. I want to raise him like my own child.”

“Please help me to arrange a meeting with Daniel to show him that he is not alone, and that he still has a loving family,” he finished by saying.

Daniel’s uncle says he’s been given no information about why he is not allowed to see his nephew.

“There’s no explanations. I brought all the documents: the birth certificate of my brother, my birth certificate, which confirms that we are brothers, brought documents that I have a living space in Moscow, I brought documents about my income… I’m ready to provide anything,” Morozov told RIA Novosti.

The Russian Consulate in San Francisco said the boy’s custody will have to be decided in an American court.

Morozov told RT that the Russian Consulate in San Francisco could only offer him moral support so far. Though the custody issue may need to be settled in court, he has yet to hire a lawyer.

“I haven’t hired a lawyer yet because their fees are very high, as this kind of process can cost not tens but hundreds of thousands of dollars. I don’t know if our family will have enough money even if we sell everything,” he told RT over the phone.

Earlier, Morozov appealed to Moscow to help him in the potential legal battle for custody, saying his wants to “raise [Daniel] as a worthy member of our society, and create the maximum conditions for his happiness.”

According to Morozov, the boy does not have a single relative left in the United States. However, a GoFundMe page set up to raise money for either giving Natalia a funeral in the US or sending her body back to Russia, mentions another possible guardian, Jesse Gonzalez, the boyfriend of Daniel’s murdered mother. The page has a few photos of Jesse, Daniel and Natalia hanging out and having fun together.

“The only family he [Daniel] knows here in the US is Jesse and his family. Natalia has been in the US for 19 years and at 9 years old, her son considers this to be his home. Jesse’s family believes that Natalia would want him to be with Jesse,” the page reads.

Andrey Morozov told RIA Novosti that he is prepared to fight Jesse for custody of the orphaned boy.

“A person who has never brought up this child, who has nothing to do with him, is now trying to falsely portray [their relationship] in such a way that the family does not get its child,” Morozov told RIA from Los Angeles. “I think it’s shameless.”

The children were brought to Iraq by their radicalized parents, some of whom apparently joined the Islamic State terrorist group.

The kids landed in the capital of Russia’s Chechen Republic, Grozny, with relatives and medics already awaiting them on the airfield.

According to Chechnya’s head, Ramzan Kadyrov, all of the orphans were from the neighboring Republic of Dagestan.

The children’s return became possible after their story was brought to light by RT as part of the “Bring them home” campaign, which calls on anyone with information about the children in the broadcaster’s videos from Iraq to submit it at children@rttv.ru.

RT’s footage was shared online by Kadyrov, who played an active part in the operation to bring the kids back. It also involved Russia’s Foreign Ministry and politicians from Jordan and Iraq.

The heartbreaking videos that featured sisters Fatima and Khadija, an older girl named Mariam, and two boys Sultanmurad and Ali, allowed the relatives to identify the children, whose parents were killed or went missing in Iraq.

“I can’t describe the joy we feel now. We thought we had lost them. They’re all that’s left of my sister and her family,” the aunt of Sultanmurad said as she held the 3-year-old boy in her arms.

“We have another nephew there. We hope to find him as well,” she added.

The grandfather of 3-year-old Fatima and 5-year-old Khadija said his life has taken on meaning again after the girls came back.

“For the last two years, I prayed to God to fall asleep and never wake up. And now I pray every day to wake up and live for them,” he said.

Khadija earlier told RT that she won’t tell her relatives in Russia that her mother was killed in a suspected drone strike, suggesting that it would hurt their feelings.

“I won’t tell where mom is. I can say she’s by the river. That’s all. I can say mom didn’t die, she’s by the river,” she said.

Khadija and Fatima were recognized by their 7-year-old friend, who used to play with them two and a half years ago and showed the footage to their relatives.

“We’re so happy – we’re speechless,” Mariam’s relatives told reporters at the dinner where the children were taken shortly after landing.   

Mariam had problems even pronouncing her own name when she was discovered by RT in an Iraqi orphanage earlier in August.

The girl suffered immense psychological and physical trauma after her mother was killed by a sniper in front of her eyes and she herself was hit by shrapnel.

However, she was seen smiling for the first time in a long while as she was surrounded by the caring family in Grozny.

Earlier in August, a four-year-old Chechen boy, Bilal Tagirov, returned to Russia after living with his jihadist father, who was fighting for Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Mosul.

Around 50 children of Russian citizens currently remain in various shelters, Mikhail Fedotov, the head of the Council for Civil Society and Human Rights, told RIA Novosti.

Their return home is a complicated affair due to the kids lacking passports, bureaucratic hurdles and the difficult security situation in Iraq.
