Children of war must develop far quicker than the average child. With danger lurking in every corner, Orphan Age revolves around keeping a band of kids, each with their own personalities, safe and sound through decisive efforts as you scrounge for what you need in a warzone. You’ll have to make tough choices to gather necessary resources and recruit extra hands to keep your base in tip top shape to have any hope of keeping these kids safe.

To keep your crew happy and healthy, you’ll have to scavenge for materials (food, water, medicine, and crafts), but these trips come with risk as players stumble across soldiers or other things that may injure them. This is made more challenging by the generated maps, which constantly forces you into the unknown. Also, the survivors come with different skills, ages, and backgrounds, varying what your kids can do and how they react to certain situations.

Back at home base it’s all about putting your scavenging rewards to use. Build beds, heaters, playgrounds – anything to fill the needs of the children. If you want to figure out how to build more complicated structures, researching can expand your knowledge. With a focus on building, risk-taking, and careful attention to the thoughts and mental states of your kids, Orphan Age is all about working together in a world divided, building a home with the future undecided.

‘Orphan Black’ Co-Creator is the New ‘Snowpiercer’ Showrunner https://briefnews.eu/orphan-black-co-creator-is-the-new-snowpiercer-showrunner/ https://briefnews.eu/orphan-black-co-creator-is-the-new-snowpiercer-showrunner/#respond Thu, 01 Mar 2018 11:14:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/orphan-black-co-creator-is-the-new-snowpiercer-showrunner/ Snowpiercer showrunner

The Snowpiercer TV show finally has a new conductor. Previous Snowpiercer showrunner Josh Friedman left the show very quickly after TNT gave it a greenlight. Now, Orphan Black co-creator Graeme Manson will take over.

TNT’s Snowpiercer TV show got off to a bumpy start. Less than two weeks after the sci-fi series received the go-ahead from TNT, original showrunner Josh Friedman departed. “Creative differences” were cited behind Friedman’s exit, but Friedman took to Twitter and claimed he was “removed”:

Now, The Hollywood Reporter confirms Orphan Black co-creator Graeme Manson will serve as the Snowpiercer showrunner. Sarah Aubrey, Executive Vice President of originals at TNT, issued the following statement regarding Manson’s hiring:

“Graeme’s extensive background in the sci-fi genre coupled with his brilliant work behind Orphan Black made him the perfect choice for this series…He is the best conductor to navigate the thought-provoking and delicate themes of the series while bringing this frozen, futuristic world to life.”

In addition to co-creating the sci-fi series Orphan Black, Manson also wrote the 1997 indie horror flick Cube. There’s still hope for the Snowpiercer TV series, and Manson’s background makes him a great fit for showrunner. Friedman, however, was the individual who developed the show and wrote the pilot that inspired TNT to pick-up the series. It’s a bit of a bad look for him to be forced out after that.

The Snowpiercer TV Show

Snowpiercer will be adapted from the Bong Joon-Ho film of the same name, starring Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton. In the movie, efforts to combat global warming has resulted in a new ice age. The few remaining survivors of the world live aboard a constantly-moving train. The train has class sections that reflect society: the wealthy individuals live towards the front in style, while the poorer, lower-class suffers in the back. It was a wonderful film that also happened to feature a scene where Chris Evans talks about eating babies.

Jennifer Connelly stars in the new TV series as a first-class passenger who becomes fascinated with the lower class passengers of the train. The show also stars Daveed Diggs, Mickey Sumner, Susan Park, Benjamin Haigh, Sasha Frolova, Katie McGuinness, Alison Wright, Annalise Basso, Sam Otto, Roberto Urbina, Sheila Vand and Lena Hall.

Doctor Strange and Sinister director Scott Derrickson helmed the pilot episode. Per THR, “The series explores class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival.” The series will debut in 2018.

-The ReVere Motor Car Corporation of Logansport, Indiana, may have been one of America’s first supercar makers. The marque was founded 100 years ago by Adolph Monsen, who toured the streets of Logansport in the first bare chassis on August 25, 1917. Monsen was a vehicular obsessive who got his start in the Chicago bicycle business late in the late 19th century, parlaying that into a dangerously explosive interest in steam-powered race cars before transitioning to a salesman and racing driver for Indianapolis-based brand Marion.  READ MORE ››

The Congolese Orphan Turned International Pop Sensation https://briefnews.eu/the-congolese-orphan-turned-international-pop-sensation/ https://briefnews.eu/the-congolese-orphan-turned-international-pop-sensation/#respond Sun, 27 Aug 2017 07:19:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-congolese-orphan-turned-international-pop-sensation/ When Congo-born Trésor Riziki arrived in Durban, South Africa, in 2009, he didn’t speak a word of English. Still, at 19, he managed to find work guarding and washing cars. Seven years later, at a glitzy ceremony in the same city, he won Best Pop Album for VII at the 22nd South African Music Awards.

Today Trésor is a multiplatinum-selling artist in South Africa, with two No. 1 hits in Italy. He’s performed before crowds of 60,000 and he’s signed a seven-figure licensing and distribution deal described by his manager, Raphael Benza of Vth Season, as “the biggest ever for an artist based in Southern Africa.” For many, this would be enough, but Trésor sees South Africa as “my camping place where I’ve been training and getting ready for the whole world.” His aim? To revive the glory days of African music, a time when Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba were household names and Graceland was the biggest album in the world. “When people see me, they must feel Africa,” he says, “even if I’m just buying milk at the supermarket.”

Tresor 3 (1)

Trésor, 30, was born in Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo — a small city now known as the gateway to the mountain gorillas of the Virungas, but in 1994 it took in one million refugees of the Rwandan genocide. During the crisis, local schools were closed, so Trésor’s parents dropped him and his seven siblings at church childcare centers during the day. “That’s where I learned music,” he says. He began playing guitar and drums in kwassa kwassa bands when he was 9 and started taking singing seriously several years later.

When he was 10, Trésor contracted a serious bone infection that put him out of commission for three years. He couldn’t play sports like other kids his age, so he lay on the couch and listened to music from all over Africa. He suffered an even bigger blow when both of his parents died in 2003 — an event he still refuses to talk about. Two years later, he left Goma without saying goodbye to anyone. His destination? South Africa, the country whose great musicians he’d listened to, singing in a language he couldn’t understand. To reach Durban, Trésor walked, hitched, bused and swam (through crocodile-infested rivers, he says). “I’ve always been a wanderer,” he explains. “If you dropped me in a desert right now, I would survive.”

In everything that I do, I’m representing my country.

Trésor Riziki

He didn’t guard cars for very long; he switched to waiting tables — and learned to speak English. Around the same time, he formed Maisha — with friends from Britain, Portugal and South Africa — a band known for its funky Swahili lyrics and embraced by the city’s music scene. “We did great things in Durban, and Maisha opened a lot of doors,” he tells OZY. “But I’m a world wanderer.” That again.

Trésor went solo in 2010 and signed with Benza and Vth Season three years later. Benza, who also has West African roots, says he recognized Trésor’s talent instantly but was unsure about how the artist was channeling it: “His music had become quite poppy. It reminded me of U2.” By adding guitar and drums to his music, Trésor was able to create a sound that is distinctly African but accessible to a global audience.

I ask Jon Savage, a 5FM radio host and former musician who calls himself “part of the furniture of SA music,” if Trésor’s dreams of global stardom are realistic. In response, Savage reflects on his experience in the ’90s touring internationally with his band, Cassette: “It was really, really, really hard,” he says. “I realized very quickly that we South Africans didn’t have a clue.” He then details how much competition there is abroad, making it harder to secure gigs, deals and airtime. Still, he adds, “Trésor is unique in a million ways.” His ability to hold onto his dream despite the many setbacks speaks for itself, says Savage, and he’s “a musician first and a businessman second” — his time is spent working on his craft rather than trying to make hits.

Which is not to say that this self-confessed workaholic who “doesn’t count the hours” isn’t doing everything he can to ensure success. Everyone I speak to (including Trésor himself, who winces when recalling some of his early hits) mentions how much effort he devotes to perfecting his English pronunciation. And Savage is impressed by Trésor’s punctuality — “He’ll never turn up late after a big night out” — and modesty, even in the wake of his growing fame.

Tresor 2nd look 2 sm

While he’s focused on his musical career, Trésor also mentions plans to one day bring an end to what he calls the “economic war” in the DRC. When I ask whether pop music is really the best way to do this, he responds, “In everything that I do, I’m representing my country. … I’m still young, growing, trying to gain influence so I can influence decision-makers to bring about change.” Change that he concedes won’t be brought about by “one song or Facebook post” — and then he hints at “big plans” for his country without revealing more.

For now, Trésor is leveraging the added control that comes with the success and financial stability he’s achieved; later this year he and Benza will visit New York and L.A. to promote his new album, The Beautiful Madness, and to work with other writers and producers.

But first he has an important date in Kigali, Rwanda. When Trésor headlines at the Blankets & Wine festival there today, it will be the first time his siblings — among them a doctor, a human-rights lawyer and a police officer — will see their brother perform live. This time he’s promised to say goodbye before continuing in his quest “to see Africa rise again.”

TVLine's Performer of the Week: Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany https://briefnews.eu/tvlines-performer-of-the-week-orphan-blacks-tatiana-maslany/ https://briefnews.eu/tvlines-performer-of-the-week-orphan-blacks-tatiana-maslany/#respond Sat, 19 Aug 2017 16:47:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tvlines-performer-of-the-week-orphan-blacks-tatiana-maslany/ THE PERFORMER|Tatiana Maslany

THE SHOW|Orphan Black

THE EPISODE| “To Right the Wrongs of Many” (Aug. 12, 2017)

THE PERFORMANCE| For her final Orphan Black performance, Maslany pulled off yet another magic trick: She helped deliver two babies (as Sarah) and gave birth (as Helena) at the same time. (She also welcomed little Kira into the world via intercut flashbacks, for the record.) Even after five seasons of watching Maslany do the seemingly impossible, the chemistry that the actress was able to create with herself as Sarah coached Helena through the birthing process was as astounding as the idea of human clones itself. When Helena pushed through the pain to find joy with her newborn twins, and a tearful Sarah embraced her “meathead” sister, Maslany took us on a roller-coaster ride of raw emotions so intensely palpable, we’re still in awe. (Read the creators’ take on the scene here.)

The show’s swan song also gave Maslany the opportunity to slow down and reveal the vulnerable hearts of the Ledas. As Sarah’s walls crumbled, the actress unleashed a dam of pent-up insecurities about motherhood during an intimate conversation between the sestras. Meanwhile, Maslany’s gaze was so wistful and sad as Rachel pondered her lonely future apart from her kin that you had to feel for the corporate clone.

We suspect it will be a while — or possibly, never — before another performer is able to so skillfully and completely make us forget that the same person is underneath such a diverse array of doppelgängers. She is, simply put, one of a kind.

HONORABLE MENTION | Foremost among the marvels of Shawn Hatosy‘s work on Animal Kingdom is the way he makes us see that Pope, for all of his horrific misdeeds, is not inherently evil. Rather, the ex-con is akin to a pit bull who’d be perfectly sweet, had he not been so badly warped by his upbringing. Which, of course, made “The Leopard” particularly harrowing — and an ideal showcase for the duality that the actor has nurtured in his character. After Pope learned that he’d been manipulated into murdering unrequited love Catherine for no reason, Hatosy uncorked his alter ego’s rage in a confrontation with mom Smurf that was, at turns, terrifying, heartbreaking and, as their interactions so often are, unsettlingly sexual. Off that devastating showdown, Pope, desperate and vulnerable, confessed his sin to girlfriend Amy in a last-ditch attempt at being forgiven that left his portrayer wearing an expression so hopeless, we wanted to give him a hug in addition to this Honorable Mention.

HONORABLE MENTION | Eat your heart out, Meg Ryan. In the “Hella LA” episode of Insecure, Natasha Rothwell didn’t just steal the final scene — in which Kelli’s day-party hookup pleasured her under a restaurant table while surrounded by their friends — she stole the whole damn show. By now, we’re well-trained to expect hilarity to ensue whenever the actress appears on screen. But she took it to a whole other level this week as Kelli, struggling to enjoy herself discreetly, shut her eyes before they rolled back in her head, tried to control her breathing, and cleared her throat to cover what otherwise would have been a gasp of ecstasy. By the time she was through, we’d had, albeit in a different way, what Kelli had: a hell of a good time. And, unlike Ryan’s Sally, neither Kelli nor we were faking it.

HONORABLE MENTION | Something is eating at Twin Peaks‘ Sarah Palmer — and because of Grace Zabriskie‘s performance, we almost don’t want to know what! In Part 14 of the revival, Zabriskie showed us a woman (?) trying to temper her temper as a neanderthal cruised her at a bar. “Mind your own business. Please,” she flatly asked (or advised). “Would you sit back where you were. Please.” When the cretin scorned suggested she was a “bull dyke” and graphically detailed the activities associated with that, Sarah with a menacing glance purred back, “I’ll eat you,” before rising to reveal her true face (so to speak) and then take a lightning-fast chomp out of the guy’s neck. When the bar boss laid eyes on the mauled barfly, Sarah — in a terrific button to the scene — played dumb as Zabriskie shrugged, “Sure is a mystery, huh.”

‘They shot my mom dead’: RT seeks relatives of Russian-speaking orphan stranded in Iraq https://briefnews.eu/they-shot-my-mom-dead-rt-seeks-relatives-of-russian-speaking-orphan-stranded-in-iraq/ https://briefnews.eu/they-shot-my-mom-dead-rt-seeks-relatives-of-russian-speaking-orphan-stranded-in-iraq/#respond Thu, 17 Aug 2017 23:31:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/they-shot-my-mom-dead-rt-seeks-relatives-of-russian-speaking-orphan-stranded-in-iraq/ With scars across her face, an injured hand and tear-stained eyes, Mariam struggles to talk about the trauma she has faced. The Russian-speaking girl is in a Baghdad orphanage, and told RT her mother is dead and she doesn’t know where her father is.

Mariam was recently brought to the same orphanage in the Iraqi capital where other Russian-speaking children are being kept after their parents disappeared or were killed.
Her story is one of several that RT has already brought to light through its “Bring them home” campaign, with appeals for anyone with information about the children in the videos to share it at children@rttv.ru.

Mariam can hardly pronounce her name. At first she stayed silent, but then managed to speak of her injuries and the ordeal she suffered when the house she lived in with her family came under fire one day.

“Someone began shooting at the house. After that they threw grenades. And this is when the fire started,” she says. “Then I was hit by shrapnel. And this is how blood spilled from my head. Lots of blood,” she said, touching scars on her face, apparently left by shrapnel.

Mariam says that her mother was shot dead and she doesn’t know where her father is.
“There were snipers across the river. The snipers shot at my mother right here,” Mariam says. “They shot her in the arm. The head and the arm. And then she died.”

RT shared the video in an attempt to track down Mariam’s relatives, who she says live in Makhachkala, the capital city of the Russian Republic of Dagestan. She said her grandparents live there.

RT has received numerous calls from people who say they recognize Russian-speaking children seen in the video from an orphanage in Baghdad aired earlier in August.

At least four children – two girls and two boys – have been identified by people who say they are relatives.

One other woman said she believes a toddler in the video was her grandson who was born in Iraq, though she only saw pictures of him as a baby, sent by her daughter.

All the people contacting RT shared heart-breaking stories about their sons, daughters and in-laws who fled to join Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants.

RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan began raising awareness by issuing an appeal on her Twitter account for people to email RT if they recognize any of the children.

Her call was followed by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who posted the RT footage in Russian on his Instagram account last week.

Moscow is now trying to bring several dozen Russian-speaking children from Iraqi orphanages back home. Earlier in August, a four-year-old Chechen boy, Bilal Tagirov, returned to Russia after living with his jihadist father, who was fighting alongside IS in Mosul.

On Saturday, Russian Children’s Ombudsman Anna Kuznetsova said that a number of appeals from relatives of children who were taken to Iraq by their radicalized parents has risen since the issue surfaced in the media.

“Many [relatives] attach photos [of these children] to their appeals. These are very tough stories,” she wrote on Instagram.

Some 50 children of Russian citizens are now being held in different Iraqi shelters, Mikhail Fedotov, the head of the Council for Civil Society and Human Rights, told RIA Novosti.

We might not have any surfboards to hand out, like they will on tonight’s Teen Choice Awards, but we’d still like to recognize all the best dialogue that TV served up in the last seven days.

This time around, we’ve got a moment of self-awareness on Weekend Update‘s summer premiere, a nod to HBO’s dysfunctional Girls on Younger, sci-fi confusion on Wynonna Earp and Stephen Colbert’s latest plea to President Trump.

Also featured in this week’s roundup: double doses of Difficult People‘s Season 3 launch and Orphan Black‘s farewell episode.

Orphan Black Boss on Burning Qs About Kira's Dad, Charlotte's Future and More https://briefnews.eu/orphan-black-boss-on-burning-qs-about-kiras-dad-charlottes-future-and-more/ https://briefnews.eu/orphan-black-boss-on-burning-qs-about-kiras-dad-charlottes-future-and-more/#respond Sun, 13 Aug 2017 13:34:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/orphan-black-boss-on-burning-qs-about-kiras-dad-charlottes-future-and-more/ Warning: The following contains spoilers for the very last episode of Orphan Black. Proceed at your own peril.

Orphan Black may be over, but our burning questions about the series finale will never end.

After weighing in on when and how he and co-creator/director John Fawcett decided what the show’s swan song would be, co-creator/writer Graeme Manson tackled a few lingering mysteries about Charlotte’s living situation, Kira’s MIA pops and the clone conspiracy.

And after a season of surprising and fun returns — Dr. Leekie! Aynsley! Chad! — Manson explains why some other comebacks just weren’t necessary.

TVLINE | When Siobhan exposed Neolution, was the existence of clones concealed from the public?
MANSON | Yes. It’s one of those things we always avoided. We never wanted that sort of news conference-y [moment or] the plot to turn to, “Oh, it’s all going public.” That took out the mystery and the heat and the clandestine tone of what the girls were going through, so we were never interested in that. It’s our secret, and we’re off to cure our secret sisters.

Orphan Black Season 3 Sarah CalTVLINE | Where is Cal? Is he still in Iceland?
MANSON | He’s doing whatever Khaleesi tells him to do.

TVLINE | On that note, you got a lot of fun characters back this season for flashbacks. Were there actors like Michiel Huisman that you wanted to get back, but couldn’t?
MANSON | Yeah, sure. Anybody who wasn’t there was somebody we couldn’t get back. [Laughs] But listen, you can’t get everybody. Particularly some of the male supporting cast who were love interests to, for instance, Sarah or Helena. At the end of the day, when we were boiling it down with Tatiana [Maslany], it was like, these girls’ story does not need to be supported by a male romantic interest. The tightening and the closing down and the finishing of these women, it’s about a sisterhood, motherhood and family. For instance, after everything they’ve been through, do you think Helena really needs a boyfriend? No, she needs her sisters. What’s more important? I think we focused it quite thoughtfully that way.

TVLINE | Is Charlotte living with Art?
MANSON | She was staying with Art during the last couple of episodes of shenanigans, when everybody was running around. She was staying with Art’s ex and Art’s daughter. It’s a nice, little open thing of what could happen to Charlotte. I know that the fandom discussed her being adopted by Cosima and Delphine. I love that story, too. That’s a beautiful one to have in your imagination. I second that. It’s not what we chose to put on screen. But there are a bunch of jumping-off points, and when you end with the hopeful tone that we have, the fans can take their hopeful ideas of what might happen to the loose ends, and they can spin it forward in the same tone. If we ended in a giant bloodbath, I don’t think you’d be able to do that spinning forward. [Laughs] [With] loose ends like that, we all just need to know that this family is going to stick together.

Orphan Black fans, are you OK with not getting a cameo from Cal or Helena’s brief romantic interest Jesse (played by Patrick J. Adams)?

Clone Club finally got a taste of freedom during the Orphan Black series finale.

After taking care of the heavy business of birthing Helena’s babies and killing both P.T. Westmoreland and Dr. Coady, thereby breaking Neolution’s hold on them, the sestras were left to try to acclimate to normal life. While some took to it better than others — Helena seemed to adapt surprisingly well to new motherhood with twin sons Arthur and Donnie — others found themselves struggling. Still shaken by Siobhan’s death, Sarah was plagued by old insecurities and her shortcomings as a mother. But after a sweet chat with Helena, Alison and Cosima, Sarah ditched her plan to sell Siobhan’s house and run off with Kira. Instead, the hour concluded with her and Felix taking Kira to the beach before fading out on a shot of Siobhan’s home.

RELATED Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Maslany Looks Back at Her Clone Journey, Talks Bloody Goodbye and ‘Really Different’ Finale

Orphan Black Series FinaleAfter five seasons of crazy “OMG!” plot twists, the creative team felt strongly that a “smaller, quieter” series ender was the way to go. The second half of the hour was meant “to say, ‘The bad guys are done. The bad guys aren’t the show,’” co-creator/writer Graeme Manson shares. “If our sestras win, we need a little bit of time to see the repercussions of that, and to give Clone Club the hope and the heart that they deserve, and that the sestras deserves.”

Also in the finale: Cosima and Delphine set off to cure the 270+ clones around the world — an idea that could lead to more Orphan Black stories one day, Manson and co-creator/director John Fawcett tell TVLine in the following Q&A.

Below, Manson and Fawcett reveal the last-minute tweak they made to their swan song and explain why Rachel was left out in the cold, even after giving up a list of all the clones’ identities and whereabouts.

TVLINE | You could divide this finale down the middle into two halves, the first part dealing with plot and the second with emotion. What was the thinking behind that structure?
JOHN FAWCETT | That was kind of always the plan, in terms of the way we had thought about the finale way back when we were originally talking about it. We knew that we were going to need the last two episodes as like a two-parter, and in some ways, Episode 9 was going to do a lot of the heavy lifting in regards to the plot and the run-and-jump elements of the show. We wanted to wind up that action early on in the finale so that we could make this jump forward in time and be with the characters in the future. That was something that we always, always wanted to do, and that we felt was important. And in some senses, then, it makes the finale a kind of smaller, quieter episode. I think both Graeme and I felt that was necessary, that it really boiled down to the characters and where the characters were going from here, and where they are three months from now.

Orphan Black Series FinaleTVLINE | The final image of Sarah and Felix taking Kira to the beach and then that empty house: It was a sweet, quiet note to end on. How did you land on that particular closing moment?
FAWCETT | I think, actually, that was kind of a Graeme-ism. We struggled with that a lot. It was like, really, “What are we going to close on? What’s going to be the final image?” Sarah has gone through a lot. She’s lost her mother, she’s feeling a little f–ked up, obviously, three months in the future, having spent so much of the last five seasons just fighting against oppression and battling enemies. [She] is now left with no one left to fight, and is uncomfortable in her own skin again, and doesn’t know what to do without her mother. You can see that the old Sarah is creeping in now. All those old insecurities are coming back, and that feeling of wanting to run is with her again. And she doesn’t. She’s held up by her sisters at the end and doesn’t run… I think those final images of the house, that is everything we wanted the show to be about.

TVLINE | When did you know this would be how the show would end? Did you always have this ending in mind, or was it something that evolved over time?
FAWCETT | We knew we were going to wind up with P.T. Westmoreland at the end. We knew that the story was really going to come down to Sarah and Helena, and that we were going to birth these babies under duress, in the most awful conditions, in the most awful place that we could. And that we were going to defeat our bad guy. There were some last-minute changes within the season. Since Season 2, Graeme and I felt that this ending would actually take place on the island, and we switched gears. We actually wrote that draft of Episode 9, where they went to the island, and then backed up on that and wrote like crazy and changed it during our hiatus to bring the bad guys to us. What we realized we were missing in that ending [was] all of our other actors. We were missing Scottie and Cosima and Art, and putting Sarah and Helena alone on the island just didn’t seem like the right thing to do. So we backed up on that. But other than that, I feel like we shot the finale that we had talked about three years ago.

TVLINE | As you said, this was a very contemplative and emotional finale. Were you ever tempted to go with a more twisty ending?
MANSON | I felt quite strongly that this was the way to end it. This is a show that keeps audiences on the edge of their seat. Every episode, we tried to twist, twist, twist… It’s part of the veneer of our storytelling, but it’s not the most important part of the storytelling. We’ve often said to ourselves, particularly Tat [Maslany], “Gosh, I wish we could do more episodes like that, that slow down a little.” But we have this hard-charging formula that really works for us. … We didn’t want to rely on a big plot twist to wrap up the series. We wanted to rely on the hearts of the sestras and the deep themes of family that we’ve built up.

Orphan Black Series FinaleTVLINE | Talk to me about filming that birth scene. It looked very difficult on an emotional and technical level.
FAWCETT | Yeah, it was. One of the things that I’m most proud of about this show [is] certainly the technical accomplishments that we’ve achieved, and that we’ve constantly pushed ourselves to try to do better and to try to make clone scenes that people hadn’t seen before. This was certainly one of them. This was extremely challenging from a technical point of view. And very, very hard from an acting point of view because, as you can well imagine, it’s so technical [that] it’s often very difficult to get it right on the first take. Or the second take. Or the third take, for that matter. And so, for Tatiana to be in that emotional place consistently from take to take until you actually get it right is so hard.

And those birthing scenes down in the basement were the very last scenes that we shot of the entire show. They were the last two days of shooting. It’s emotional, not just the content of the scenes, but the state on set, and where everyone was at was just a very emotional place. So in some ways, obviously, it worked well for the scene. But it was hard, and it was challenging.

It was really important for me to try and get Sarah and Helena together with two babies in a complicated techno-dolly shot. As soon as you add little, tiny babies to that, that makes it even that much more challenging. But I’m proud of that sequence. It really has the emotional power that I always imagined that it needed to have. I’m very proud of how those scenes work and how the cross-cutting between Sarah birthing Kira with Siobhan present — that was always in my mind as the scene that the series was all going to come down to.

Orphan Black Series FinaleTVLINE | Rachel is still the outlier. Would having her bond with the sestras and going inside the baby shower have been one happy ending too many?
MANSON | Yeah. We discussed it, and I don’t think anybody thought that Rachel could walk into that room. Sarah would not allow it. She’s not that benign. [Laughs] That’s too much character change, and that’s too tidy a ribbon to tie on it. We really, really enjoyed Rachel’s arc series-wide. But season-wide, to me, it was great. I really liked Episode 7, [which allowed us to] look beyond what we know about Rachel and understand the deep wounds in Rachel, understand why she finally turns toward her sisters. But to have her sitting there at the end with our four sisters, that’s definitely a bridge too far. She’s redeemed, but not forgiven.

TVLINE | Was there one clone in particular that was very difficult for you to say goodbye to? For example, Tatiana [Maslany] told me she had such a visceral reaction during her final scenes as Alison that she got a nosebleed.
FAWCETT | It was probably Alison for me, too. That was absolutely the hardest one to wrap. I’ve been very close to that character from conception. [Alison’s] last scenes, I had to do a really weepy phone call where it was just her on her own, and [Tatiana’s] nose started to bleed, and she was crying, and there was snot and blood. “Oh my God, I have to cut.” [Laughs] And Tat, of course, was like, “Why are we cutting? This is great! I was trying to incorporate it into my performance.” And I was like, “Tat, there’s blood everywhere. It’s not worth it.” [Laughs] She’s that kind of actor. She just wants to stay in the moment.
MANSON | For me, it’s going to be Sarah. At times, my favorite clone’s been Cosima, and I’ve loved Helena and Rachel. I love them all. But at the end of the day, Sarah is my nemesis, too. Sarah’s the one that I had to spend the most time with. She’s the most difficult character. She drives the plot. I’m like her Felix. [Laughs] While I feel battered and bruised, I’ll stick up for her. I’ll miss her terribly when she’s gone. I really will. She’s my surly sister.

Orphan Black Series FinaleTVLINE | We learned in the finale that there are 274 total clones. Would you like to explore some of these other clones’ stories in some format?
FAWCETT | If I was going to imagine another season for Orphan Black, following Cosima and Delphine was where I wanted to go. I wanted to go with them and to find these other women. I wanted to see what these other women were like. I wanted to hear these stories that these other women had. That, to me, felt like there was certainly more to imagine there. At the end of this season, you really feel like they’re out on their journey around the world, and that they’ve got this list and the list is life, and they’ve got their inoculations, and they’re world travelers now. I love what that feels like. If I were to pick this up and continue, that’s certainly something I would be interested in.
MANSON | We just need to give these characters a break for a little while. But obviously, there’s tales to be told there, even if they’re told in the comic books or something. I do believe that someday we’ll come back to these characters. We’re still interested in a movie. I’d be interested in returning to this world if Tatiana was in it.
