Even though the throwaway reference to Wendy’s brother wasn’t intended to create a whole new storyline for future seasons, Linney’s idea eventually led to the introduction of Ben.

Finally, she added: “We came up with that in the boat, Jason and I, and they wrote the line in. After that, there were jokes throughout the first two seasons like ‘when’s the brother gonna show up?’”

Luckily, viewers had their patience rewarded and the Netflix series eventually paid off Wendy’s concerns with her brother in the latest season, with shocking results.

Ozark season 3 is available to stream on Netflix.

Netflix snaps up musical series originally intended for Fox https://briefnews.eu/netflix-snaps-up-musical-series-originally-intended-for-fox/ https://briefnews.eu/netflix-snaps-up-musical-series-originally-intended-for-fox/#respond Wed, 04 Jul 2018 07:04:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/netflix-snaps-up-musical-series-originally-intended-for-fox/

Netflix is no stranger to rescuing movies on the brink of oblivion, but now it’s getting more comfortable with the idea of giving TV pilots a second chance. The company has ordered 10 episodes of Mixtape, a romantic musical series whose pilot didn’t make the cut at Fox. Creator Joshua Safran (of Gossip Girl and Quantico fame, above) will continue to be involved along with most of the pilot’s cast, with only the main actor’s role changing.

The show revolves around the love stories linking a seemingly “disparate” group of Los Angeles residents, with music naturally providing the glue.

Netflix isn’t quite the knight in shining armor here: the studio shopped the production to streaming companies almost as soon as it turned down a conventional TV series. And Netflix is more than a little cozy with Fox, having picked up Lucifer days earlier. Nonetheless, this speaks to the mounting influence of services like Netflix. They might not yet be to the point where they’re regularly taking the biggest shows away from TV networks, but they’re a viable option whenever there’s a show promising enough to have a chance beyond conventional broadcasts.

Everybody loves Thor now, primarily due to Chris Hemsworth‘s charming, slightly goofy take on the character, and Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. But folks at Marvel weren’t always convinced of Thor’s durability. The Avengers screenwriter Zak Penn confirms that early Avengers scripts attempted to reduce Thor’s screentime – until the casting of Chris Hemsworth changed everyone’s mind.

The Thor films, with the exception of Ragnarok, aren’t exactly the best entries in the MCU. But Chris Hemsworth sure as hell makes for a charismatic (and good looking) God of Thunder. Zak Penn, who is out making the rounds promoting Ready Player One, recently revealed that before Hemsworth came along, there was a real sense that Thor just wasn’t going to work in the MCU. Penn, who has a story credit on the Avengers script with director Joss Whedon, told THR that early Avengers drafts tried to limit Thor’s role – and then Chris Hemsworth’s audition changed all that:

“I remember Chris Hemsworth walking through the Marvel offices and being, ‘Oh, my god, that guy is Thor.’… Originally I was trying to reduce how much Thor was in the movie. Once it was clear that, no, this is going to work and they were excited about it, then I did not [reduce Thor in the script]. I stopped doing that.”

I will say that while Hemsworth is pretty stellar as Thor, the Thor films often leave a lot to be desired. Marvel seems to have realized this too, which is why they handed the series over to Taika Waititi and let him go wild with Thor: Ragnarok.

Penn also reveals that he was one of the first to push for a cinematic universe, back when he was scripting X-Men 2:

“It wasn’t just me. I would say myself, Kevin Feige, Avi Arad, Ari Arad, all of us [said], ‘This is going to last. This isn’t going anywhere,’”

Despite this, when Marvel was just getting started with their cinematic universe, Penn confirms that many people had some doubts about the durability of the concept:

“It was considered risky, believe it or not. I know that seems crazy right now, but a number of people said, ‘You’re really going to to go with this startup company and they’re going to make [and finance] their own movies? That never works out.’”

Of course, we all know now that it did work out, and we’re about to see the release of the 19th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27, 2018.

‘Beetlejuice’ Originally Had a Much Darker Ending https://briefnews.eu/beetlejuice-originally-had-a-much-darker-ending/ https://briefnews.eu/beetlejuice-originally-had-a-much-darker-ending/#respond Sat, 31 Mar 2018 06:26:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/beetlejuice-originally-had-a-much-darker-ending/ Beetlejuice Alternate Ending

Beetlejuice is on everyone’s mind lately due to the film’s 30th anniversary. While you’re reflecting back on Tim Burton‘s 1988 dark comedy, here’s something you may not know: the film almost had a much darker ending. Read about the Beetlejuice alternate ending below.

Happy 30th birthday, Beetlejuice – you don’t look a day over 29! In 1988, Tim Burton’s weird comedy became a hit, and its legacy lives on to this day. There were even plans for a sequel set in Hawaii (for some reason). But the Beetlejuice legacy could’ve been much different had the film featured its original, alternate ending. Speaking with Yahoo, Beetlejuice producer Larry Wilson revealed the film originally ended with Winona Ryder‘s goth-as-hell character Lydia dying in a fire. As Wilson tells it, the idea was that the death would enable Lydia to join Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis‘ ghost characters in the afterlife:

“Our first ending was Lydia — she died in a fire and was able to join Barbara and Adam in the afterlife. A couple of people said to us, ‘Do you really think that’s a good idea? Is that really the message you want to be sending to the teenagers of the world? Die in a fire?’ So, yeah, it probably was darker.”

Needless to say, everyone made a wise choice by not using this ending. Rather than Winona Ryder burning to death, we’re instead treated to the character floating into the air while lip-syncing Harry Belafonte’s “Jump In The Line”.

In the film, married couple the Maitlands die in a car accident, only to return to their home as ghosts. A new family – the Deetzes – move in, much to the Maitlands’ annoyance. To get rid of the living people infesting their home, the Maitlands call upon Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a raunchy “bio-exorcist”. The only living person who sympathizes with the Maitlands is the Deetzes’ daughter, Lyida. Burton’s film has plenty of dark moments, but there’s also a light, goofy tone prevailing through the film. Having Lydia burn to death would probably ruin all that, though.

This alternate ending might be in keeping with Michael McDowell‘s early Beetlejuice script, which was much darker. In McDowell’s 2nd draft (which you can read here), the character of Beetlejuice doesn’t just want to scare the Deetz family out of their new home – he wants to kill them. This script also gave the Deetz family a second, younger child who doesn’t appear in the finished film.

Thankfully, the story of Beetlejuice evolved into the film we all know it as now, which still holds up to this day, which is more than I can say about some of Tim Burton’s other films.

‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Does Not Break a Certain Saga Tradition as Originally Thought https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-the-last-jedi-does-not-break-a-certain-saga-tradition-as-originally-thought/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-the-last-jedi-does-not-break-a-certain-saga-tradition-as-originally-thought/#respond Mon, 18 Dec 2017 00:35:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-the-last-jedi-does-not-break-a-certain-saga-tradition-as-originally-thought/ Star Wars: The Last Jedi Script

Many Star Wars fans seem to be divided when it comes to their feelings on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The film is quite a departure from what many have come to expect from the saga that started all the way back in 1977, and that’s largely why so many fans either love it or hate it. But there’s one Star Wars tradition that was kept intact, despite many fans initially thinking it was axed as one of the many decisions director Rian Johnson made in in a movie that feels decidedly different from the chapters that came before it.

In every Star Wars movie, at least one character says “I have a bad feeling about this” or some variation on that line. However, upon first inspection, Star Wars: The Last Jedi doesn’t appear to have this line anywhere in the movie. But let’s not forget that there are many characters in the Star Wars galaxy who don’t speak English. And it turns out the traditional line was given to one of them in the Star Wars: The Last Jedi script.

While there were plenty of articles circulating at the beginning of the weekend pointing out that this signature line was missing from The Last Jedi, taking it as another sign that Rian Johnson was trying to distance the movie from everything that came before it, they turned out to be completely wrong.

First off, Rian Johnson responded to one curious fan on Twitter:

So where was the line? Actually, it’s one of the earliest moments of the movie, and Huffington Post confirmed as much when they interviewed Rian Johnson this week. The director was asked if BB-8 is the one to deliver the line when he and his pilot pal Poe Dameron are flying toward the fleet of First Order Star Destroyers and the Dreadnaught that have just arrived to blast the Resistance into oblivion, and Johnson confirmed with a laugh, “Yes! Good catch.”

The line in question is followed by Poe Dameron trying to encourage his droid friend to not be worried about their current mission, telling him to spout off some “happy beeps” instead. It’s probably some advice that we could all take right now after this difficult year.

For those curious, here’s all the other instances the line is used in the other Star Wars movies:

There’s a larger discussion to be had regarding whether the exclusion of this line really would have been all that Earth-shattering. Honestly, if the line was missing, it would have fit in with the evolution Star Wars has in The Last Jedi, but it would hardly be anything to pitch a fit about.

The ‘Scream 2’ Ending Originally Had Different Killers (Or Did It?) https://briefnews.eu/the-scream-2-ending-originally-had-different-killers-or-did-it/ https://briefnews.eu/the-scream-2-ending-originally-had-different-killers-or-did-it/#respond Fri, 15 Dec 2017 17:53:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-scream-2-ending-originally-had-different-killers-or-did-it/ scream 2 ending

Want to feel old? Scream 2 was released 20 years ago. The sequel to the massive hit that changed the horror genre as we know it attempted to keep the hype alive, with diminishing results. In honor of the film’s birthday, writer Kevin Williamson revealed some fun, alternate Scream 2 endings that never made it into the final film, including different identities for the killers.

Let’s take a trip back to the innocent time of 1997. The ’90s were drawing to a close, the Y2k bug was still a possibility, and we had no stinking clue about the horrors that would await us in the 21st century. Instead, we got our horror fix from the wealth of ironic, self-referential slasher films that began sprouting up in the wake of the blockbuster hit Scream. Wes Craven‘s film changed the horror landscape and inevitably spawned Scream 2 in ’97. In honor of that sequel’s anniversary, Dread Central sat down with Scream and Scream 2 writer Kevin Williamson, who revealed some details about alternate script endings.

If you need a refresher, Scream 2 ends with the reveal that the murderers stalking Neve Campbell’s character Sydney are Debbie Salt, played by Laurie Metcalf, and film student Mickey, played by Timothy Olyphant. Debbie turns out to be the mother of one of the murderers from the first film, and wants revenge against Sydney for killing her son. It’s a really stupid ending, all things considered, especially since Olyphant’s character Mickey is barely in the film to begin with. But there was an alternate, unused ending that might’ve worked better: Dread Central dug up a draft that featured almost every supporting character in the film being in on one big conspiracy to kill Sydney. In this draft, the killers included Debbie, Mickey, Sydney’s boyfriend Derek (Jerry O’Connell) and best friend Hallie (Elise Neal). What a twist!

Now are you ready for another twist? This alternate ending wasn’t actually real at all, but part of an overarching plan to keep the film a secret. Williamson’s original Scream 2 screenplay draft was leaked online during production, revealing the film’s ending and causing the studio to quickly order rewrites. To keep the same problem from happening all over again, Williamson went ahead and wrote three different endings to better keep the final twist under wraps:

“The Hallie and Derek ending was a dummy draft. At the time the script was written, the studio was determined to keep the plot details under wraps…They were worried the killer’s identity would be leaked, so we wrote several endings. Three in all, if memory serves, and when actors and potential crew members asked to read the script, we would send the script with the dummy ending.”

Williamson goes on to say that another alternate (fake) ending involved a twist that would reveal David Arquette‘s character Dewey as one of the killers as well:

“There was even a fake ending where Dewey was the killer. They existed as a decoy and nothing more. Extreme measures, but we really wanted to keep the killer’s identity a secret!”

Of course, none of these endings were ever intended to be used, and instead the film ended with the Debbie/Mickey twist, which was ultimately a huge disappointment anyway. Would any of these alternate, fake endings have worked better? Perhaps, but we’ll never know. At the very least, we can take solace in the fact that Scream 2 is better than Scream 3, which is just terrible.

‘Justice League’ Originally Featured Superman’s Black Suit, But Gave Us That Weird CGI Face Instead https://briefnews.eu/justice-league-originally-featured-supermans-black-suit-but-gave-us-that-weird-cgi-face-instead/ https://briefnews.eu/justice-league-originally-featured-supermans-black-suit-but-gave-us-that-weird-cgi-face-instead/#respond Sat, 09 Dec 2017 23:37:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/justice-league-originally-featured-supermans-black-suit-but-gave-us-that-weird-cgi-face-instead/ Superman black suit

At this point, it’s safe to say Justice League is a misfire. Critics didn’t care for it, it underperformed at the box office to the point that it’s caused a shake-up behind the scenes at Warner Bros., and all anyone wanted to talk about was Henry Cavill‘s weird CGI face hiding his mustache. As rumors abound about deleted scenes, cinematographer Fabian Wagner confirms that the film originally featured Superman black suit scenes, recalling the outfit used for Superman’s resurrection in the comic books following The Death of Superman arc. At some point, this idea got scrapped. Sorry, everyone. More details about the Superman black suit in Justice League are below.

As I sat in the theater watching Justice League, only one thought came to mind: “The only thing that could improve this movie would be a scene where Superman shows up wearing a black suit instead of his traditional blue one.” Okay, I’m lying, I didn’t think that at all. But some hardcore Superman fans had long hoped that when Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel returned from the grave, he’d slap on the famous black suit that appeared one point in the comics. And it seems this wasn’t just a fan dream: scenes involving the Superman’s black suit were actually filmed. At least that’s what Justice League cinematographer Fabian Wagner claims. Speaking with The Inverse, Wagner said “There were [scenes shot]…It’s a cool looking costume. Sadly, we didn’t see that either in the final cut.”

Superman’s black suit has a basis in the comics. After the character returned from the dead as part of the Death of Superman arc, he adopted a cape-free black suit with a big silver shield. He also let his hair grow wild and long, because when you come back from the dead you’re allowed to get a little carefree. Here’s an image that confirms all these silly things I’m saying:

c29131e5a1e680e9c480eb64a52da8ddb62f2a66

Alas, Superman’s black suit was just not to be. It ended up on the digital cutting room floor, like apparently so many other scenes did. As Wagner also confirms (and what everyone knows by this point): there are “quite a few scenes” that didn’t make it into the theatrical cut of Justice League, and that reshoots drastically altered the film over time. I’m sure there are plenty of Superman fans who bemoaning this news, but if you honestly think a scene giving Superman a different suit would’ve improved Justice League, I don’t really know what to tell you. The film had plenty of problems, but Superman’s costume wasn’t one of them. That said, maybe the scenes with Superman’s black suit will turn up on the Blu-ray release and give fans the alternate costuming they crave.

Home Alone: Guess which MAJOR Hollywood star was originally offered Harry role? https://briefnews.eu/home-alone-guess-which-major-hollywood-star-was-originally-offered-harry-role/ https://briefnews.eu/home-alone-guess-which-major-hollywood-star-was-originally-offered-harry-role/#respond Sat, 09 Dec 2017 17:04:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/home-alone-guess-which-major-hollywood-star-was-originally-offered-harry-role/

But even so, there are many interesting facts about its production that many of its fans are none the wiser about.

For example, before Joe Pesci came aboard to play Harry, there was one very famous Hollywood star in line to take the role.

According to Mental Floss, Robert De Niro was the first port of call for producers, but he turned it down.

They then turned to popular character actor Jon Lovitz, before finally finding their man in Pesci.

Pesci was already well known to audiences having starred in the likes of Goodfellas and the TV series Half Nelson.

His star continued to ascend afterwards, with roles in the likes of My Cousin Vinny and A Bronx Tale – the latter of which, funnily enough, starred De Niro.

Recently it was revealed by Devin Ratray, who played Buzz, that his on-screen girlfriend was played by one of the crew member’s sons.

The team were aware of how cruel it would be to cast a female performer for the sole reason of having her appearance mocked by Kevin (Macaulay Culkin), so they got the art director’s son to dress up for the snap instead.

“I think if he had known it would become the highest-grossing family comedy of all time, he might have had second thoughts about it,” Ratray joked.

Home Alone is streaming on Netflix now.

‘The Shape of Water’ Was Originally Pitched as a Black and White Movie; Could We See That Version on Home Video? https://briefnews.eu/the-shape-of-water-was-originally-pitched-as-a-black-and-white-movie-could-we-see-that-version-on-home-video/ https://briefnews.eu/the-shape-of-water-was-originally-pitched-as-a-black-and-white-movie-could-we-see-that-version-on-home-video/#respond Thu, 30 Nov 2017 20:46:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-shape-of-water-was-originally-pitched-as-a-black-and-white-movie-could-we-see-that-version-on-home-video/ The Shape of Water black and white

Guillermo del Toro‘s fantasy romance The Shape of Water opens in limited release this weekend, and this story of a mute woman falling in love with a fish man is full of lush, vibrant colors, gorgeous aquatic hues, and the level of visual splendor for which del Toro is best known. But we nearly saw an entirely different version of the movie: according to the film’s production designer, del Toro originally pitched The Shape of Water as a black and white film.

Entertainment Weekly sat down with the film’s production designer Paul Austerberry, who explained how the movie shifted to its current color palette:

“When it was in black and white, the budget was $ 12 million,” Austerberry said. (Del Toro put the hypothetical black-and-white budget at $ 16.5.) “And then Fox Searchlight said, ‘You know, if you make it color, we’ll make it $ 19.6 million.’ We were struggling at even $ 19.6 million to get it all down, so thankfully it went that way…

“I was a bit nervous about the black and white, because color is such a strong element that you can play with in a story or movie to help shape the mood. When people see the movie, they comment a lot on the color, so I’m glad we went that way.”

Though I think the colors in The Shape of Water give the movie its soul, part of me was still curious: might we see a The Shape of Water black and white cut on home video, in the vein of recent movies like Mad Mad: Fury Road or Logan? But later in the EW piece, del Toro seems to reject that notion by revealing that his black and white pitch was purely a strategic move on his part and never something he legitimately intended to do:

“To be disarmingly and horribly honest, it was a pawn sacrifice. It was one of those things that I knew I was not really interested in, but I knew I needed to appear reasonable. ‘Oh, Guillermo. He’s such a nice guy. He gave up black and white.’”

That’s hilarious. Rarely do we hear about this level of finagling that has to happen to get a movie made, but del Toro – a prolific talker who loves to peel back the curtain on the filmmaking process – just came right out and explained the truth of the matter. I wonder if anyone at Fox Searchlight feels burned by this…but if they do, I imagine that burn will fade considerably once Oscar nominations start coming out, because del Toro’s film is considered a contender in multiple categories.

For more about The Shape of Water, be sure to read Chris Evangelista’s review from the Toronto International Film Festival, find out how the creature was made, and check out my transcription of a recent Q&A in which del Toro, Sally Hawkins, Doug Jones, Richard Jenkins, and more revealed some intriguing highlights about making the movie.

The Shape of Water arrives in theaters in New York on December 1, 2017 and expands wider in subsequent weeks.

The 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is one of the best loved children’s books of all time.

Having spawned the Gene Wilder classic movie and the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp reboot, the story continues to hold pop culture appeal.

Yesterday marked what would have been Dahl’s 101st birthday and his widow Liccy appeared on Radio 4 in an interview on her late husband.

She revealed: “His first Charlie that he wrote about, you know, was a little black boy. I’m sure that was influenced by America.”

However it seems the character was whitewashed by the author’s agent.

According to NME, Dahl’s biographer said: “It was his agent who thought it was a bad idea, when the book was first published, to have a black hero. She said: ‘People would ask why.’”

Dahl’s widow Liccy also expressed in the radio interview that the change was “a great pity”.

She said it would have been “wonderful” to have seen the story as Dahl had originally intended.

She also revealed that Dahl wasn’t a fan of Wilder’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie.

She said: “He wasn’t very happy about…the original with Gene Wilder.”
