Google has long been criticised for the long delays between Android upgrades. While iPhone users are merrily chowing down on regular OS updates, Android users have to wait for long intervals, with lower cost handsets never seeing an update at all during their lifespans. Google’s update framework, Project Treble, seeks to rectify this, and the company has just announced that all devices launching with Android 9 Pie or later with be Treble-compliant. The picture above shows off a range of Trebled-equipped devices displaying the same Generic System Image.
In a blog post, Google says that thanks to Treble, it anticipates more devices running Android 9 Pie at the end of 2018, compared to the number of devices that were running Android Oreo at the end of 2017. Bear in mind that it wasn’t until February of this year that Google announced Nougat had become the most-used Android release, 17 months after its summer 2016 launch. Treble aims to close these kinds of gaps, and if the framework comes as standard on new devices going forward, it won’t be too long before more people are on better versions of Android, which is good news for features and security, and for staving off the competition.

If you like your Oreos with a ton of creme, you likely go right past the regular Oreos and straight to the Double Stuf — or even the Mega Stuf — cookies. If the inside of the cookie is your favorite part, prepare to be excited because Oreo has unveiled its most stuffed cookie yet — the appropriately named Most Stuf Oreo.
Instagram account @TheJunkFoodAisle shared a photo of the cookies on October 6 this year and the cookies are so large they look like ice cream sandwiches. The somewhat secretive post only advertised that the treats were “coming soon” and that the photo was representative of the “actual product.”See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Oreo cookies and its competitor Hydrox, which brands itself as the “original sandwich cookie” according to its website, are engaged in a feud.
Hydrox representatives posted on Facebook about their suspicions that Mondelez International, the parent company of Oreo, has been systematically hiding Hydrox cookies on grocery store shelves to keep customers from buying them. The post announced that Hydrox had filed an official complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Oreo has been an American staple for over a hundred years. In that time, it’s perfected its recipe, and branched out into different flavors.
Some flavors, like Peanut Butter Oreos, are an obvious creation for Oreo fans. Others, like Swedish Fish Oreos, confused (but sometimes delighted) consumers. Still others, like the Double Stuf Oreo, have become more popular than the original Oreo.
With so many different flavors out there and the flavor availability changing every month, I decided to try every flavor I could get my hands on between February and May of 2018. In those four months, I tried 27 different flavors, which I’ve reviewed and ranked below.

I picked these up at a local grocery store in Bali. When I brought them into the office, one of my coworkers told me she’d grown up on these in Thailand.
I could honestly write an entire article about this Oreo flavor alone. It advertises itself as “ice cream,” specifying “blueberry ice cream” in smaller letters below the logo. I wondered why the word “blueberry” wasn’t included in the name of the flavor, but after tasting it, I understood.
The cream was slightly fruity, but I quickly tasted something menthol-y that overtook my entire mouth. My theory is that this flavor is “ice cream” because it imitates the cold temperature of ice cream in your mouth. It tasted a bit like cough syrup.

I had at least two people tell me this was their favorite Oreo flavor. I was hoping for a tangy, citrusy experience. What I got was a dull, sweet lemon flavor.

A while back, Oreo revealed the mystery flavor is Fruity Pebbles. The cream tasted like the milk at the bottom of a bowl of Fruity Pebbles. If you’re into that, you’ll like them.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 users should check their Settings menu for the new update
Samsung has started to roll-out its Android 8.0 Oreo upgrade to last year’s flagship smartphone, Galaxy Note 8.
According to reports, the update is now available to users in France, with the new software expected to roll-out to other European countries in the coming weeks.
Samsung typically staggers major software upgrades, like the move to Android Oreo.
The company is in the midst of pushing out Android Oreo to its Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones at the moment, following months of beta builds last year.
Both Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy Note 8 will all run the same version of Oreo.
Samsung doesn’t appear to have included any new functionality specifically for the S Pen, or the dual-camera system on the Note 8.
However, there is still a slew of software features in the new update.
The upgrade, dubbed Samsung Experience 9.0, includes support for notification categories in the dropdown shade.
This makes triage of your smartphone notifications much easier than previous versions of Android.
Samsung has also included a number of new lockscreen clocks and designs for the Always On display.
The new software also includes support for notification badges, which were introduced in Android Oreo.
These red dots appears next to the app icon when there is an unread message, or task that needs to be actioned.
• Touch and hold an app to display shortcuts to common or recommended tasks within the app (supported apps only).
• Notification badges on app icons are linked with the notification panel. Clear a notification in one location, and it will also be cleared in the other location.
• The toolbar gives quick access to useful functions.
• The GIF keyboard lets you send GIFs.

• Install a second copy of a messaging app so you can use two accounts at the same time. For apps that verify accounts using phone numbers, you’ll need a different phone number for each account.
• Touch and hold a messaging app on the Home or Apps screen to install the second account or go to Settings – Advanced features – Dual Messenger.
• Back up Secure Folder to Samsung Cloud remotely when your phone is lost.
• Lock Samsung Pass using Find My Mobile.
• Bluetooth now supports high-quality audio codecs, including AAC and Sony LDAC.
• Video player includes auto repeat and 2x speed option.
• Voice Recorder provides smart tips to conveniently block calls while recording.
• Email lets you flag Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync emails.
• Samsung Health’s new sticky notification lets you see your step count at a glance.
• Clock now includes a Landscape mode and timer sound options.
• The digital clock widget goes directly to the Clock app when you tap it.
• Samsung Pass added the ability to manage usernames and passwords in third-party apps.
Andy Rubin’s Essential Phone appeared midway through last year, poised to take on the Samsung-Apple hegemony with a sleek, rugged design. The company skipped updating its phones to Android’s Oreo 8.0 release, and rather opted to wait for Oreo 8.1. Today is that day, then, with the company announcing the update is available for Essential phones immediately.

Oreo 8.1 gets a faster start up, smart text selection, instant apps and windowed video multitasking features. Of course, not that many folks are waiting for the new operating system. The IDC noted last month that Essential had shipped less than 90,000 phones in the first six months after launch. Still, if you’ve got an Essential phone and want the latest OS now (it’s been available for Nexus and Pixel devices since December), just check your phone for the over the air update.

The sluggish roll-out of Oreo on the Galaxy S8 is demonstrative of the problem with Android
Android is a phenomenal operating system.
The open-source software allows users an unprecedented level of customisation, system-level support for third-party apps, and deep ties with Google Assistant – easily the most competent smart assistant on the market right now.
However, when it comes to updates, Android is a real mess.
As it stands, the latest version of Android only runs on a meagre 1.1per cent of all Android hardware worldwide, with 2016’s Android Nougat powering 28.5 per cent, and 2015’s Android Marshmallow at 28.1per cent.
Every year, Google executives will take to the stage during the company’s annual developer conference and unveil the latest iteration of Android.
The team behind the latest innovations will proudly discuss the new features, design tweaks, and security improvements coming to the mobile operating system.
The new version of Android – inevitably named after a popular dessert or snack – will roll-out to Google Pixel and Nexus-branded in the summer.
And then third-party device manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, OnePlus and LG will drag their feet bringing the new operating system to their latest smartphones – adding their own features, tweaks and user interface designs.

Google this week rolled-out a developer preview of its all-new Android P operating system
Nowhere is this more evident than the Android 8.0 roll-out to Samsung Galaxy S8.
The Galaxy S8 was Samsung’s flagship smartphone when Android Oreo was released worldwide, back in August 2017.
However, those who paid £689 for the latest-and-greatest Galaxy S8 have had to wait months for the upgrade to Android 8.0.
Samsung closed its Android Oreo beta program back in late January 2018 – five months after Oreo’s release.
However, the South Korean technology company has yet to roll-out the final update in the UK.

The current breakdown of Android versions and their respective popularity
Six months after Google pushed-out its Android 8.0 Oreo software update to all Pixel and Nexus-branded devices, Galaxy S8 owners have yet to see the new features.
In the UK, Samsung Galaxy S8 owners likely won’t see the update until April.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, an industry insider revealed networks are only beginning internal tests on the software.
These network tests can take up to four weeks to complete, pushing the update to mid-April, Express.co.uk has been told.
That means Galaxy S8 owners could get the update to Android Oreo almost a month after its successor has launched in developer preview.
That’s not ideal for customers who have paid for a flagship handset from one of the biggest smartphone manufacturers in the world.
But while other smartphone makers might be a little quicker at turning around the latest Android updates for their hardware, it still takes an inordinately long time.
Google tried to address the problem head-on in Android 8.0 Oreo with a feature called Project Treble.
This separated the updates to Android issued by Google from the work that hardware partners do to ensure Android works with their latest chipsets.
Treble allows OEMs like Samsung and Motorola to issue updates to the Android operating system without waiting on a chip partner, like Qualcomm, to send along any software updates, too.
Unfortunately, Project Treble hasn’t seen widespread adoption.
For example, the Android Oreo update for Galaxy S8s does not support Project Treble.
OnePlus has also confirmed that none of its current line-up, including the OnePlus 3, 3T and the OnePlus 5, 5T will support Project Treble – even after they’re updated to Android Oreo.
That means things are unlikely to speed-up for these phone owners in the future, which could be painful as more details about the forthcoming software features for Android P start to appear online.
But things could get better.
Samsung this week confirmed its all-new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ flagships support Project Treble out-of-the-box.
While Galaxy S9 owners are unlikely to see the benefits for a little while (Android P won’t launch until after the Google IO developer conference on May 8th) it could result in much faster updates in the future.
Google’s Android One initiative is another play from the Californian technology company to combat fragmentation in its ecosystem.

Nokia has signed-up its new hardware to the Android One scheme
OEMs that sign-up to the Android One scheme cannot ship a heavily skinned version of the operating system packed with bloatware apps.
Instead, Google promises that Android One hardware will run the “purest form of Android”.
The lack of customisation from the OEMs allows Google to push-out regular updates to Android One smartphones, like it does with its own Nexus and Pixel-branded hardware.
As a result, any Android One smartphone is guaranteed to receive at least two years of operating system upgrades to the latest version of Android.
Google says that this “means access to the latest innovations and a phone that always runs as smoothly as the day you bought it.”
The US company also claims Android One phones are among the most secure, since they all get regular security software updates and come with Google Play Protect built in.
Nokia recently announced a slew of new flagship smartphones, including the dual-curved Nokia 8 Sirocco, which are included in the Android One scheme.
Android phonemaker Essential is skipping over Android Oreo 8.0 despite running a beta program for the platform these past two months. Apparently, it discovered several stability issues in 8.0 during testing, which it believes will be addressed by 8.1. So, instead of rolling out 8.0 to the public, the company has decided to “focus [its] energy” on its successor. The downside is that it will push back Oreo’s release to the Andy Rubin-designed Essential phones a few weeks, but those who can’t wait that long can alway sign up for 8.1’s beta release.
In its announcement, Essential said it’s launching a beta program for Oreo 8.1 to be able to fine-tune the build with the help of users’ feedback. Interested users will have to have enough tech savvy to be able to install the platform, and they can also expect to deal with bugs until the stable release. Essential didn’t reveal when the beta will be available, so those who’d like to take part in the testing program will just have to wait for more info.
