On Friday, Diane Greene announced she would be stepping down as Google Cloud’s chief exec.

Greene’s replacement will be the 22-year Oracle veteran Thomas Kurian, who before resigning in September, was president of product development with the company, and a key player in its cloud efforts. When he steps into the role in January, he’ll be leading Google Cloud as it continues its quest to topple Amazon and Microsoft in the cloud wars.

But who exactly is Google Cloud’s new CEO?

Here’s a closer look at Thomas Kurian’s life and career:

Thomas Kurian is 51. He was born in Kerala, India. His father was self-educated and became a successful executive in the manufacturing industry. His mother was born to Indian parents living in Sri Lanka. She immigrated to India to go to college, which was uncommon for women at the time.

Kurian has an identical twin brother named George. The twin brothers have both become high-powered Silicon Valley execs: George is CEO of the $ 5.5 billion storage company, NetApp.

Kurian came to the US in 1986 to study electrical engineering at Princeton University, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. He would later go on to earn his MBA from Stanford University.

  • Oracle founder Larry Ellison said “it’s kind of embarrassing” for Amazon that it uses Oracle’s databases to power its own business — especially considering Amazon offers its own databases that compete with Oracle’s.
  • Ellison was responding to a report from last week that Amazon intends to get off of Oracle’s products completely by 2020.
  • While Amazon is a customer of Oracle’s, they are also bitter competitors, thanks to the success of Amazon Web Services.

Oracle founder and chief technology officer Larry Ellison went on stage Tuesday to announce a new database feature. But it wasn’t long before Ellison did what he seems to love doing at big events: roasting Amazon.

Last week, CNBC reported that Amazon plans to end its internal reliance on Oracle technology, which underlies some parts of its business. It’s notable, because Amazon’s market-leading Amazon Web Services cloud has been attacking Oracle’s core database business for the last few years.

Achilles predicted that Russia would win the World Cup opener against Saudi Arabia, which ended in favour of the hosts 5-0.

The cat’s second prediction turned out to be prophetic as well, after the Hermitage inhabitant foresaw Russia’s second group game against Egypt, a result which saw Stanislav Cherchesov’s men reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in 32 years.

Oracle updates enterprise security service with machine learning https://briefnews.eu/oracle-updates-enterprise-security-service-with-machine-learning/ https://briefnews.eu/oracle-updates-enterprise-security-service-with-machine-learning/#respond Tue, 03 Oct 2017 22:37:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/oracle-updates-enterprise-security-service-with-machine-learning/

Oracle added machine learning to its cloud management product to help better secure businesses from threats. The renamed Management and Security Cloud will take in data from on-premises and cloud infrastructure, then analyze them to help determine what might be a threat to a company’s data.

When the system determines that something fishy is going on, it can then automatically take steps to remediate the problem without human intervention. (Customers can set up which steps they want a computer to handle automatically, versus which ones just notify a human for further investigation.

All of this is based in the Oracle Cloud, but can ingest logs from a wide variety of sources that the enterprise tech giant doesn’t own or control. It’s all processed by pre-built machine learning models that Oracle has created to help protect customers.

It’s supposed to help prevent the next large scale data breach for Oracle customers like the Equifax hack, or the breach that hit all of Yahoo’s users.

Oracle isn’t the first company to apply machine learning to security, of course. Microsoft recently announced Azure Advanced Threat Protection, which is designed to monitor a variety of data sources and help protect company data.

Splunk recently announced new features that make it easier for companies to apply their own models to logs that its eponymous software is analyzing. (That feature requires the assistance of data scientists, for what it’s worth.)

There are also a host of dedicated security companies like Darktrace that use machine learning to analyze what’s going on inside a company network. Cylance and Endgame are other dedicated businesses that focus on securing users’ endpoints using machine learning.

These capabilities build on existing ones in the Oracle Management and Security Cloud, like automated assessments for system configuration, IT analytics and task reporting.

Story developing. More to come.

Larry Ellison’s slide clicker failed during his Oracle OpenWorld keynote (ORCL) https://briefnews.eu/larry-ellisons-slide-clicker-failed-during-his-oracle-openworld-keynote-orcl/ https://briefnews.eu/larry-ellisons-slide-clicker-failed-during-his-oracle-openworld-keynote-orcl/#respond Mon, 02 Oct 2017 03:50:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/larry-ellisons-slide-clicker-failed-during-his-oracle-openworld-keynote-orcl/ LarryClickerOracle

Oracle may have just announced a new fully-automated database, but there’s one area where the company is still dependent on humans: Larry Ellison’s presentation clicker.

When the executive chairman took the stage Sunday night for the opening keynote of Oracle OpenWorld, he found himself struggling to keep his presentation slideshow aligned with where he was in his talk.

That’s when Ellison told the audience his showbiz secret: Despite appearances, the presentation clicker doesn’t actually control which slides are shown to the audience. It’s just a way of communicating with the theater technician to get them to manually change the slides.

“All my button does is notify a human being. It’s really not automation at all. It’s fake automation. If it was real automation, that would not have happened,” Ellison said.

To solve the problem, Ellison put down his clicker, and said “next slide” out loud whenever he needed the presentation changed.

The trouble, however, didn’t end there. Toward the end of his presentation, Ellison said that one of his slides had been deleted, and later that they were out of order.

“Someone rearranged my slides. It’s okay,” Ellison said.

Oracle announces a new automated database that can patch cybersecurity flaws itself (ORCL) https://briefnews.eu/oracle-announces-a-new-automated-database-that-can-patch-cybersecurity-flaws-itself-orcl/ https://briefnews.eu/oracle-announces-a-new-automated-database-that-can-patch-cybersecurity-flaws-itself-orcl/#respond Mon, 02 Oct 2017 01:51:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/oracle-announces-a-new-automated-database-that-can-patch-cybersecurity-flaws-itself-orcl/ LarryEllison Larry Ellison didn’t wait long after coming onto the Oracle OpenWorld conference stage in San Francisco on Sunday before announcing a new set of cybersecurity-oriented products.

In his first keynote of Oracle’s annual use conference, the executive chairman announced a new autonomous database that can patch itself from cybersecurity flaws without having to go offline.

The automated database, called Oracle 18c, can instantly patch itself while still running, which Ellison says is a big advantage over the current system, in which humans have to schedule downtime for a database.

“It didn’t work at Equifax,” Ellison said, in reference to the consumer credit reporting company that announced a major security breach in early September.

“It doesn’t work. We have to automate our cyber defenses. And you have to be able to defend yourselves without taking all of your computer systems offline or shutting down your databases,” Ellison said.

At the heart of this new database machine learning, which Ellison said will continuously tune itself without human intervention.

“There is no pilot error anymore, because there is no pilot,” Ellison said. “Therefore, we can guarantee an availability time of 99.95%. That’s less than 30 minutes a year of planned or unplanned downtime.”

In addition to automation, Ellison said that Oracle’s new database is extremely elastic, which means it can quickly adapt to workloads without wasting resources.

“We can guarantee our bill will be less than half of what Amazon will charge you,” Ellison said. “Amazon’s database, Redshift, cannot automatically increase the number of processors to run a bigger workload and then free up those processors. It just can’t do it,” Ellison said.

“It will be less than one half of what Amazon charges you. We will write that in your contract,” he said to applause.

Oracle will also announce a new security product on Tuesday.

A $1.3 billion tech upstart struck a deal to ‘leapfrog’ competitors like Adobe and Oracle https://briefnews.eu/a-1-3-billion-tech-upstart-struck-a-deal-to-leapfrog-competitors-like-adobe-and-oracle/ https://briefnews.eu/a-1-3-billion-tech-upstart-struck-a-deal-to-leapfrog-competitors-like-adobe-and-oracle/#respond Sun, 23 Jul 2017 04:52:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-1-3-billion-tech-upstart-struck-a-deal-to-leapfrog-competitors-like-adobe-and-oracle/ Zeta Global David SteinbergThe marketing tech company Zeta Global has acquired the artificial intelligence startup Boomtrain.

The deal is said to be valued between $ 35 and $ 40 million, according to people familiar with the matter.

Zeta Global aspires to compete with giants in the “marketing cloud” sector, such as Adobe, Oracle, Salesforce and IBM. These companies offer marketers a slew of data and technology-driven services aimed at helping them acquire and keep customers.

For example, a big auto marketer might use one of these companies to manage its list of existing customers, its email database, its ad budget forecasts and its website clickstream data – all via powerful software.

As evidence of the growing importance of this sector, Zeta raised $ 140 million in new funding in May, valuing the company at $ 1.3 billion, reported TechCrunch.

All of these cloud giants promise that their tools and technology can help marketers make better decisions about what customers they should go after and where to spend their budgets. And all of them are surely interested in claiming to be pioneers in machine learning or artificial intelligence.

The Boomtrain deal is Zeta’s claim to be ahead on this front. Boomtrain currently works with companies such as CBS Interactive and Dow Jones.

“Nobody knows where anything is going, but we’re making a bet on this being important,” said David A. Steinberg, Zeta Global’s cofounder and CEO. He said that via Zeta’s own machine-learning technology and Boomtrain’s proprietary algorithm, marketers will be able to aggregate vast streams of data and get that much smarter about how to correspond with consumers.

Theoretically a brand using Zeta’s services will be able to figure out the best time of day to advertise, the most compelling offer to display, and the most ideal medium to reach a person with an ad, for example.

“We believe this leapfrogs us past our competitors,” he said. “We are putting this tech at the core of our platform. Anybody who is not investing heavily in [AI] is going to lose to their competitors.”

MasterCard has partnered with Oracle to grow digital reach (ORCL, MA) https://briefnews.eu/mastercard-has-partnered-with-oracle-to-grow-digital-reach-orcl-ma/ https://briefnews.eu/mastercard-has-partnered-with-oracle-to-grow-digital-reach-orcl-ma/#respond Tue, 28 Feb 2017 16:17:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mastercard-has-partnered-with-oracle-to-grow-digital-reach-orcl-ma/ Mobile Order AheadBI Intelligence

This story was delivered to BI Intelligence “Payments Briefing” subscribers. To learn more and subscribe, please click here.

A new global partnership between MasterCard and software firm Oracle will give Oracle’s clients better access to digital payment solutions, according to an announcement made at Mobile World Congress.

The partnership will focus on in-store experiences, operational efficiency, and cross-channel consistency. Most notably, it will allow for pre-integration, meaning that Oracle users will be able to simply integrate MasterCard digital offerings directly into their existing platforms, MasterCard digital payment products EVP James Anderson told BI Intelligence.

The platform could quickly gain traction in the industry.

  • Digital payment offerings are becoming more popular because of the benefits they can provide. Increasing digitization of consumer habits across the board naturally carries over to finance and purchasing behaviors. For example, BI Intelligence expects US mobile order-ahead sales to reach $ 38 billion by 2020, up from $ 4 billion in 2015. That benefits businesses, because mobile orders are often larger than traditional orders, which increase sales, giving firms a reason to want to integrate these offerings.
  • But they’re often tough to access, which could give MasterCard a leg up. Historically, enabling some of these offerings could be challenging for merchants, because they had to connect two different platforms — the digital payment offering and the restaurant’s existing software platform. The pre-integration that MasterCard is offering could make access to these services much simpler, which might make the partnership popular among Oracle’s customers and quickly drive up usage.

And that ultimately benefits MasterCard by allowing it to quickly scale its digital offerings in new sectors. MasterCard has been working to expand Masterpass through things like robust bank partnerships, in order to extend the service to as many users as possible. Now, its likely the firm is focused on merchant partnerships, as part of a move to grow use cases, onboard more clients, and expand usage. Oracle could be a key player in that, thanks to its size, and because, according to Anderson, food and beverage is a major target industry for the wallet. If successful, it’s likely we could see more partnerships like this down the line.

Retailers like Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts are winning over consumers with their mobile wallets — apps developed by stores to make it easier for their customers to pay, and to deliver valuable perks.

And these retailer wallets are leading the overall mobile wallets industry, thanks to their ability to rapidly push out innovative features like rewards programs, coupons, mobile order-ahead, and custom marketing.

This may be surprising considering that retailer mobile wallets can be used only at a specific retailer’s locations; in contrast, popular universal mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay can be used at multiple retailers, as long as users are using the necessary smartphones.

Ayoub Aouad, research analyst for BI Intelligence, Business Insider’s premium research service, has compiled a detailed report on retailer mobile wallets that assesses what makes them so successful and which retailers can most effectively leverage the technology to push sales, traffic, and average ticket size. The report also outlines what makes these mobile wallets attractive, and discusses some of the advancements being made in the payments industry that will affect mobile wallets’ growth rate.

Here are some key takeaways from the report:

  • Retailers with large addressable user bases who are loyal, repeat visitors, will see their mobile wallets continue to be popular with consumers, especially as there continues to be slow merchant adoption of near-field communication (NFC) technology as well as weak offerings by universal mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.
  • Loyalty programs will be a significant driver in retailer mobile wallet adoption. Companies like Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts have been able to leverage their loyalty programs to acquire mobile wallet users, which, in turn, has driven store traffic and conversion rates.
  • By leveraging these programs, sales are expected to grow at a five-year compound annual growth rate of 68%.
  • However, adoption will begin to decelerate as a result of increased competition by 2020. As universal mobile wallet players begin to add effective loyalty programs and coupons to their offerings, adoption for retailer-based mobile wallets is likely to slow down because these offerings are their main marketing points.

In full, the report:

  • Explains what hurdles universal mobile wallets have faced.
  • Details what features retailers have adopted into their mobile wallets that have been successful
  • Analyzes the use cases of retailers that have successfully leveraged their mobile wallet offerings to push growth.
  • Identifies how universal mobile wallets will eventually slow growth for retailer-based mobile wallets.
