  • The New England Patriots routed the Los Angeles Chargers, 41-28, on Sunday to make the AFC Championship.
  • After the game, while discussing the Patriots’ upcoming matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs, Tom Brady mocked critics who think the Patriots “suck” and “can’t win any games.”
  • The Patriots will have the rare challenge of having to play the AFC Championship on the road when they go into Kansas City to play the Chiefs.

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots added another win to their playoff history, routing the Los Angeles Chargers, 41-28, on Sunday.

The final score made the game look closer than it really was. The Patriots went up 35-7 at halftime, moving the ball with ease while their defense suffocated the Chargers. It continued in the second half until the Chargers scored some desperation touchdowns late in the game.

Canadian NBA star Andrew Wiggins denies calling opponent 'gay' https://briefnews.eu/canadian-nba-star-andrew-wiggins-denies-calling-opponent-gay/ https://briefnews.eu/canadian-nba-star-andrew-wiggins-denies-calling-opponent-gay/#respond Wed, 09 Jan 2019 23:42:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canadian-nba-star-andrew-wiggins-denies-calling-opponent-gay/

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Andrew Wiggins is denying he used the word "gay" in describing Oklahoma City Thunder guard Dennis Schroder's behaviour during their game on Tuesday night.

Thunder centre Nerlens Noel was taken off the court on a stretcher in the third quarter after Wiggins collided with Noel on a dunk attempt Tuesday night. Schroder, unhappy about the play and other incidents in what was a testy game, eventually was given a technical foul for an altercation with Timberwolves guard Jeff Teague.

After the game, Wiggins, who grew up north of Toronto in Vaughan, thought Schroder's actions were unwarranted and some thought he appeared to say "He was just gay. He was acting crazy for no reason."

However, the Canadian used Twitter on Wednesday to deny that he made such a comment.

The incident overshadowed Wiggins' season-high 40 points and 10 rebounds in the Wolves' 119-117 victory.

The NBA has fined players for using anti-gay slurs in the past. Denver Nuggets centre Nikola Jokic was fined $ 25,000 US in November for using offensive language during a post-game interview.

Thunder coach Billy Donovan said after the game that Noel was taken to the University of Oklahoma's OU Medical Center. He did not offer details on the injury.

Wiggins said he didn't mean to hurt Noel.

"I just tried to make an aggressive move and dunk," Wiggins said. "He tried to contest it. I think he fell wrong. I didn't really see it until I saw him on the ground. Hopefully, he's good. I hope nothing but the best for him. I hope he gets healthy soon and comes back stronger."

The skirmish between Schroder and Teague came a few minutes after the collision. Two technicals were called on Teague and he was ejected.

Trump mulls ex-senator Jim Webb, opponent of Middle East wars, as Mattis replacement – reports https://briefnews.eu/trump-mulls-ex-senator-jim-webb-opponent-of-middle-east-wars-as-mattis-replacement-reports/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-mulls-ex-senator-jim-webb-opponent-of-middle-east-wars-as-mattis-replacement-reports/#respond Fri, 04 Jan 2019 00:16:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-mulls-ex-senator-jim-webb-opponent-of-middle-east-wars-as-mattis-replacement-reports/ The Trump administration is reportedly considering Jim Webb, a former Democratic senator opposed to the Iraq war who served as Navy secretary under Reagan, to replace Jim Mattis as Defense Secretary on a permanent basis.

The one-term Virginia senator, an outspoken opponent of the war in Iraq who briefly ran in 2016’s Democratic primary but was overshadowed by better-known and better-financed candidates, is in the running for the Pentagon post, according to three officials who spoke to the New York Times.

Representatives for Vice President Mike Pence and acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney have contacted Webb, according to one official, while another confirmed his name has been “circulating at the White House.”

Opposed to both the never-ending Middle Eastern conflict and the Iran nuclear deal, and hawkish on China, which he called “the greatest strategic threat that we have right now” during his short-lived primary run, Webb appears to be a good foreign policy fit for the Trump administration’s new direction.

A Vietnam veteran, Webb briefly registered on the 2016 campaign’s media radar when asked who he was most proud to have as an enemy, answering “I would have to say the enemy soldier that threw the grenade that wounded me, but he’s not around right now to talk to.”

Webb was elected to the Senate for his first and only term in 2006 after switching to the Democratic Party. He briefly mulled running as an independent presidential candidate after dropping out of the Democratic primary in late 2015, claiming his views were no longer in line with mainstream Democrats. He helped pass the post-9/11 GI Bill and covered Asia-Pacific on the Foreign Relations Committee.

Under former President Ronald Reagan, he spent three years as assistant Defense Secretary before being promoted to Navy Secretary in 1987, only to leave the following year in protest over cuts to the military.

Mattis handed in his resignation letter last month, after Trump’s unexpected announcement that he would pull the military out of Syria – fulfilling a campaign promise but counteracting the former general’s advice. While Mattis initially planned to step down in February, Trump “essentially” fired him a few months early, appointing his deputy, former Boeing executive Patrick Shanahan, to take over on an interim basis.

With much of military leadership opposed to Trump’s proposed drawdown in Afghanistan – a proposal most vets and many Americans nevertheless support, according to recent polls – the administration has had to cast its nets wider in the search for new Pentagon leadership. Trump does not appear to be in a hurry to replace Shanahan, hinting he might be around “for a long time” during his visit to troops in Iraq over Christmas, but other names reportedly under consideration include Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), Lindsay Graham (R-South Carolina), and Jim Talent, a former Republican senator.

Kobo Forma review: A formidable opponent for Amazon’s Kindle Oasis

Enlarge (credit: Valentina Palladino)

Kobo has its work cut out for it. The digital bookshop company reentered the US market this year, teaming up with Walmart to sell Kobo e-readers, the millions of books in its e-book library, and a new audiobook subscription service. The Rakuten-owned company faces stiff competition not just from Amazon, the reigning e-reader and e-book king, but also the looming reality that e-reader technology hasn’t changed drastically enough to propel consistent sales growth in recent years.

But Kobo is convinced that it can thrive in the US by offering competitive e-readers that feature no ads and by using Walmart’s physical and online reach to introduce e-books and audiobooks to new customers. To do this successfully, Kobo needs a few things: solid e-readers at various price points, a vast e-book and audiobook library with deals and incentives that create loyal customers, and, hopefully, unique features that Amazon doesn’t have.

We tested out the $ 279 Kobo Forma, one of the company’s newest e-readers and its competitor for Amazon’s $ 249 Kindle Oasis. It’s decked out with all of Kobo’s advanced e-reader features—an 8-inch 300ppi E Ink display, a waterproof design, and zero advertisements, to name a few—and as a whole, the Forma dutifully showcases what Kobo can add to the US e-book market.

Meet 20-year-old Tenshin Nasukawa, Floyd Mayweather’s next opponent who loves anime, aliens, and Harry Potter https://briefnews.eu/meet-20-year-old-tenshin-nasukawa-floyd-mayweathers-next-opponent-who-loves-anime-aliens-and-harry-potter/ https://briefnews.eu/meet-20-year-old-tenshin-nasukawa-floyd-mayweathers-next-opponent-who-loves-anime-aliens-and-harry-potter/#respond Wed, 07 Nov 2018 14:16:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/meet-20-year-old-tenshin-nasukawa-floyd-mayweathers-next-opponent-who-loves-anime-aliens-and-harry-potter/ Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. of the U.S. poses for a photograph with his opponent Tenshin Nasukawa during a news conference in Tokyo.JPGReuters

Tenshin Nasukawa may well be the most interesting 20-year-old in combat sports.

Last week, Nasukawa was a relatively obscure fighter, globally-speaking. Though he is a rising star in Japanese mixed martial arts, he competes in the Rizin Fighting Federation, a promotion that is only three years old and receives little press in the US and the UK.

But what a difference a few days makes. Nasukawa has been thrust into the media spotlight as Rizin made a stunning announcement — the company’s phenom will fight the unbeaten American boxer Floyd Mayweather in a bout with undetermined rules, at an undecided weight, on December 31 in Japan.

Despite his young age, Nasukawa is already an accomplished competitor with an unblemished processional record.

If his kickboxing record of 27-0 (20 wins by knockout), and his mixed martial arts record of 4-0 (two wins by knockout, and one by submission), are indicative of his promise, his impressive stoppage wins over the former IBF boxing world champion Amnat Ruenroeng and the former Muay Thai champion Wanchalong PK Senchaigym are testament to his talent-level.

His Instagram profile, which has 225,000 followers, suggests there’s more to the fighter than a strong record, though.

Here’s everything you need to know about Nasukawa, the fight game’s newest star.

This is Tenshin Nasukawa. Born in 1998, Nasukawa grew to become a young boy with a fascination for aliens, anime, and for fighting. He has a black belt in the Kyokushin style of karate and is an expert kickboxer to boot.

Nasukawa began his combat sports journey when he started practicing karate at five years old. Before he turned professional, he had an amateur kickboxing record of 99 wins against five losses and one draw. Even more impressive, he beat prominent Muay Thai champion Wanchalong PK Senchaigym while he was still a student in high school. For many, this was when a new legend was born.

Nasukawa is a big fan of cartoons, specifically those from Japan. He grew up on anime, and likes shows like “One Piece,” “Naruto,” and “Hajime no Ippo” (pictured below), a Japanese manga series focusing on a student who begins a career in boxing, beating up multiple opponents and winning many championships. Nasukawa himself competed in over 100 fights before he had even left high school, so it could be just a matter of time before he is immortalised in an anime or manga series of his own.

From intense rivalry, Martin Biron remembers Ray Emery as respected opponent https://briefnews.eu/from-intense-rivalry-martin-biron-remembers-ray-emery-as-respected-opponent/ https://briefnews.eu/from-intense-rivalry-martin-biron-remembers-ray-emery-as-respected-opponent/#respond Mon, 16 Jul 2018 17:02:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/from-intense-rivalry-martin-biron-remembers-ray-emery-as-respected-opponent/

A decade after an infamous NHL line brawl that included both goaltenders dropping the gloves at centre ice, Martin Biron gave Ray Emery a chance to take one final blow.

Emery declined.

A Buffalo radio station held its annual celebrity roast in February 2017, 10 years after Emery got the better of Biron in a line brawl during the midst of a heated Ottawa Senators-Buffalo Sabres rivalry. Biron even sent Emery a text encouraging him to attend, saying the city of Buffalo would love it, but the retired goalie wouldn't budge.

"We reached out to Ray to come to Buffalo and take his shots off the ice and Ray was uncomfortable with that," said Biron. "He was like, 'Oh no I don't want people to hate me, it was just a hockey game. I don't want to speak badly of Buffalo or you.'

"He didn't do it because he didn't want to be perceived as a big-time villain that had his run-ins with off-ice issues," added Biron. "That's not what he wanted to be. It's not who he was and I felt like that was indicative of what type of person he was and I totally respect that."

'Extremely sad'

Emery, who helped the Senators reach the final in 2007 by eliminating Biron's Sabres in the third round of the playoffs and also won the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013, drowned in his hometown of Hamilton on Sunday. He was 35.

Hamilton Police said a cause of death would be confirmed after a post-mortem.

Biron, who retired in 2014, was at a charity hockey game in Buffalo when he heard the news.

"I was with a lot of other former players that have crossed paths with Ray and everybody was thinking the same thing, extremely sad," said Biron.

Ottawa and Buffalo were two of the top teams in the NHL in 2007 and had a feud that boiled over during a regular-season game, leading to one of the more memorable moments of Biron's career.

It started when Ottawa's Chris Neil hit Chris Drury with a blindside check that cut open the forehead of the Sabres forward. On the next shift, Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff, who had last change as the home team, sent out enforcers Andrew Peters and Adam Mair along with rookie and soon-to-be known agitator Patrick Kaleta.

Memorable meeting

Ottawa's coach, the late Bryan Murray, had the scoring line of Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley and Mike Comrie on the ice, so when play resumed and the gloves came off, Emery prepared to get involved. He met Biron for what turned into a one-sided tilt in Emery's favour. Then he took on Peters, smiling and laughing during the entire spectacle while holding his own against the Sabres forward.

"I knew fisticuffs were gonna happen, so as soon as the puck dropped I just started to skate and Ray skated to meet me and when he pulled his mask off he had that smile on his face like I was chopped liver," said the 40-year-old Biron. "He was gonna beat me up with one hand behind his back and that's basically what happened.

"For us in Buffalo, one of the most memorable games in the franchise's history, or at least this generation of Sabres fans, was the brawl. It was a crazy game."

The rivalry eventually faded and both goalies soon moved to new teams. Emery played a year in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League before spending time with Philadelphia, Anaheim and Chicago, with his final stop in Germany for part of the 2015-16 season.

Many members in the hockey communityexpressed their condolences on social media when Emery's death was confirmed. Biron was amongst the group.

"He was a respected teammate and a respected opponent," said Biron.

"When I think of Ray, I think of a really big competitor."

  • The Swedish spy, who is a member of Sweden’s coaching staff, said he later set up a telescope and spied on the team from a local couple’s home.
  • Sweden apologized for the incident, but South Korea said it was “perfectly natural” for teams to gather information on one another.

Alabama player who punched an opponent and tried to fight a coach later made a championship-changing play after he was allowed to stay in https://briefnews.eu/alabama-player-who-punched-an-opponent-and-tried-to-fight-a-coach-later-made-a-championship-changing-play-after-he-was-allowed-to-stay-in/ https://briefnews.eu/alabama-player-who-punched-an-opponent-and-tried-to-fight-a-coach-later-made-a-championship-changing-play-after-he-was-allowed-to-stay-in/#respond Tue, 09 Jan 2018 17:10:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alabama-player-who-punched-an-opponent-and-tried-to-fight-a-coach-later-made-a-championship-changing-play-after-he-was-allowed-to-stay-in/ Alabama championship gameESPN

  • Alabama completed a huge comeback in the second half and beat Georgia in overtime to win the national championship.
  • Linebacker Mekhi Brown hurt Alabama’s chances when he was flagged for striking an opponent in the head after a play.
  • Brown was later seen losing his cool on the bench and going after a coach.
  • Brown was allowed to stay in the game and later made a huge tackle that helped set up Alabama’s game-tying touchdown.

Alabama is the college football national champions for the fifth time in nine years, but it wasn’t easy.

The Crimson Tide needed a thrilling comeback in the second half, led by a true freshman back-up quarterback, and a long touchdown in overtime to get the win. They also got some help in the fourth quarter from a linebacker whom a lot of people felt shouldn’t have even been in the game.

It started late in the third quarter after Alabama kicked a field goal to cut the lead to 20-10. Any momentum Bama seemed to be gaining nearly went out the window on the ensuing kickoff when linebacker Mekhi Brown struck a Georgia player in the face with what appeared to be a punch.

Brown was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, but luckily for him and for Alabama, he was not ejected.

On the sideline, he got an earful from head coach Nick Saban.

Nick SabanESPN

Apparently somebody else said something that Brown did not like as a few moments later, he was seen on the sideline trying to fight a coach or staff member.

At this point, most assumed Brown’s night was over. He might not have been ejected, but it seemed as if he had at least earned a benching for the rest of the game.

Wrong.

In the fourth quarter, Alabama kicked another field goal to make it a one-score game, 20-13. On the kickoff, Brown was back in the game and he delivered a huge hit to stop the runner.

It was not the biggest play of the game, but it was important.

In a game where field position mattered all night, Georgia was pinned back on their own 14-yard line. Alabama would force a punt after just three plays. With decent field position of their own at that point, the Crimson Tide marched down and scored the game-tying touchdown.

Who knows what would have happened, but maybe Alabama doesn’t force overtime if Brown had been benched or sent to the locker room before making his only tackle of the game.
