Enlarge / An early 1910-era magneto telephone. (credit: Cyrus Farivar)
ROSEVILLE, Calif.—I don’t know about you, but I marvel that, with a tiny device in my pocket, I can instantly hear the voice of any of my loved ones, any time, essentially for free.
Of course, this wasn’t always the case. I’m old enough (nearly 37!) to remember when the phone would ring from overseas relatives and my parents would remind us to hurry to the phone: IT’S LONG DISTANCE! And yes, my parents used to pick up the phone and disrupt my dial-up Internet escapades.
But our contemporary landscape, replete with theoretically smart handputers, has an amazing past that extends well beyond my lifetime.

French road operator VINCI Autoroutes says it has become the latest victim of the nationwide Yellow Vest protests. It claims weeks of rallies and attacks on highways and facilities resulted in tens of millions of euros in damages.
The company reported on Sunday that the wave of demonstrations had affected some 250 of its sites since the beginning of the anti-fuel tax hike movement in November. Angry crowds burned at least 6 buildings and more than 30 vehicles, and vandalized several facilities and interchanges in addition to other destruction.

France counting up billions in lost revenues after weeks of Yellow Vest protests
The latest major highways which suffered from the Yellow Vest blockades on Saturday were A7, A9 and A20. Last weekend, the movement’s actions were reportedly calmer and fewer participants hit the streets compared to the week before. The protesters lit fires right in the middle of the road, blocking traffic, and turned one of the entry points to the highway into their “camp.”
The company’s report is the latest signal that the movement is hurting the French economy. Last week, the Bank of France lowered the GDP growth forecast for 2018 and 2019 from 1.6 percent to 1.5 percent, warning that the longer the unrest lasts the greater the losses will be for the national economy. In real money the sum amounts to $ 28 billion based on the IMF forecast for the country’s GDP of almost $ 2.8 trillion for 2018.

On Saturday, power corporation FirstEnergy placed its coal and nuclear generation units under chapter 11 bankruptcy. Although coal and nuclear plants across the country have struggled to compete with the low prices of natural gas, FirstEnergy’s filing is unique because it stands to take on a political dimension. Just two days before FirstEnergy’s bankruptcy filing, the company petitioned the Department of Energy (DOE) for an emergency bailout, citing concerns about reliability.
The petition could reinvigorate a debate started by Energy Secretary Rick Perry, who proposed a rule last year to change how coal and nuclear plants are compensated for their power. The rule was denied by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which said that there was not enough evidence to justify changing how coal and nuclear are compensated.
FirstEnergy disparaged FERC’s decision in its Thursday petition (PDF), claiming that “as a result of FERC’s and the RTO’s [Regional Transmission Organization’s] failure to address this crisis, swift and decisive action is needed now to address this imminent loss of nuclear and coal-fired baseload generation and the threat to the electric grid that this loss poses” (emphasis FirstEnergy’s).

The approval comes as TEPCO is still struggling to decommission Fukushima after the 2011 nuclear disaster.
Japan’s nuclear regulator’s five commissioners voted unanimously to approve the restart at a meeting on Wednesday.
According to the regulator, the two reactors meet the stricter safety standards introduced after the disaster. They are the newest among the seven units at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa, with a combined output of 8.2 million kilowatts.
The actual restart of the reactors could take up to four years, experts say.
The nuclear watchdog is expected to conduct public hearings and consult with the economy, trade, and industry ministries.
TEPCO said it took the regulatory authority’s decision seriously and would continue making safety improvements at its plants while it attempted to decommission Fukushima Daiichi and compensate evacuees.
The decision sparked criticism from anti-nuclear campaigners and Fukushima evacuees.
“It is the same disregard for nuclear risks that resulted in TEPCO’s 2011 triple reactor meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi site,” said Shaun Burnie, a senior nuclear specialist with Greenpeace Germany.
“Approving the safety of reactors at the world’s largest nuclear plant when it is at extreme risk from major earthquakes completely exposes the weakness of Japan’s nuclear regulator,” he added.
According to Greenpeace, 23 seismic fault lines run through the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa site.
“It looks like things are moving forward as if the Fukushima nuclear crisis is over,” Hiroko Matsumoto, whose home was close to Fukushima Daiichi and who now lives in temporary housing, told Kyodo news.
In March 2011, a massive tsunami triggered by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake overwhelmed the reactor cooling systems at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in northeastern Japan.
It caused reactor meltdowns, releasing radiation in the most dangerous nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986.

When the master or masters of the WannaCry cryptoransomware worm emptied the bitcoin wallets associated with the malware earlier this week, they apparently did so to make future movement of the funds more anonymous. According to researchers at the Italian information security firm Neutrino, the bitcoin were exchanged for XMR, the “untraceable” private digital currency backed by Monero.
On Wednesday, the 52.2 bitcoins in the wallet were drained out over nine transactions, as detected by a bot created by Quartz’s Keith Collins. Neutrino researchers traced the moved bitcoins to wallets associated with Monero.
Monero is a private digital currency that is focused on anonymity. While it is based on blockchain like other cryptocurrencies and uses distributed consensus for all transactions to prevent wallet hacking, it uses “ring signatures”—an anonymous cryptographic signature scheme—to sign transactions. This makes it impossible to tell which parties were involved in a transaction when examining the blockchain itself.
]]>The spill from a horizontal directional drill operation was first reported to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency in April.
On May 10, FERC confirmed the leak of 2 million gallons of bentonite-based drilling fluid from the Rover pipeline which had covered 6.5 acres, or 6.5 football fields, of Ohio wetland.
Ohio’s EPA tested samples from the site and found “the presence of petroleum hydrocarbon constituents, commonly found in disease fuel, in samples of the drilling fluid from various locations near the HDD of the Tuscarawas River.”
FERC ordered the suspension of further drilling on the Rover project, pending an investigation into why petroleum hydrocarbons appeared in the drilling fluid.
“The presence of diesel fuel in the drilling mud is inconsistent with the commitments made by Rover on which the Commission relied to certificate its project,” FERC stated.
“Although we have no reason at this point to believe the release represents an imminent threat to human health or the environment, this incident raises concerns about potential long-term environmental impacts, including impacts on sensitive wetlands in Ohio.”
The Rover pipeline is being constructed by the same company which built the Dakota Access Pipeline. The $ 4.2 billion conduit is being built to run southeast to northwest across Ohio for 551 miles, and will transport natural gas to Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia and Canada.
The company also owes the state $ 1.5 million in restitution fees for demolishing a historic house last year. The incident led to FERC ordering Rover to seek federal approval at every stage of construction rather than issuing a blanket construction permit. With the restrictions, FERC approved the project in February.
Since then, the construction project has already caused seven industrial spills and has angered local farmers. When construction occurred during heavy rains, crews disposed excessive water by dumping it on farmers’ fields which affected farming.
Between April 5 and May 8, the Ohio EPA cited Energy Transfer at least 16 times for improperly disposing of sediment-laden waster in steams.
On April 8, workers reported an “inadvertent release” while drilling near the Indian Fork River in Eastern Ohio.
The EPA found 2,500 square feet of wetlands flooded with drilling fluid.
“We’ve not seen a project in Ohio with spills at this size and scale, and if we can’t even trust Rover to construct this pipeline, how can we trust them to operate it when it’s complete?” Heather Taylor Miesle, executive director of the Environmental Council told Bloomberg.
The pipeline is due to be completed by November 1, with the company standing to lose more than $ 10 million a week if it misses the deadline, according to Bloomberg.
Energy Transfer Partners said they are working with FERC and OEPA to resolve the issues to “ensure the complete remediation of these areas.”
Standing Rock tribal chairman Dave Archambault II told the Guardian in May the spills were a sign of bigger problems to come.
“The fact that the Dakota Access pipeline has already suffered from multiple leaks prior to even being fully operational perfectly highlights what the tribe has said all along: pipelines are not safe. Allegedly no water has been contaminated yet, but at this rate of failure it is only a matter of time,” Archambault II said.
Before the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) became operational, it had two leaks of more than 100 gallons of oil in North Dakota.
Two barrels, or 84 gallons, spilled due to a leaky flange at a pipeline terminal in Watford City on March 3, according to the North Dakota Health Department. A flange is a section connecting two sections of pipeline.
The department’s incident report said the oil flow was immediately cut off and the spill was contained on the site. Contaminated snow and oils was removed and no people, wildlife or waterways were affected.
In a separate incident, a leak of half a barrel, or 20 gallons of oil, occurred on March 5 in rural Mercer County, according to data from the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
Contaminated soil was removed and as in Watford, no human and animal life or water routes were affected.

A Comcast vendor sent a cease-and-desist letter to the operator of “Comcastroturf.com,” a website that helps people find out if their names were used by bots that have flooded the Federal Communications Commission with anti-net neutrality comments.
Fight for the Future, the advocacy group that operates the site, issued a press release accusing Comcast of censorship and posted an image of the letter that accuses the group of trademark infringement. The letter was sent by LookingGlass Cyber Security Center on behalf of its client, Comcast, and demands that Fight for the Future “take all steps necessary to see that the Domain Name [Comcastroturf.com] is assigned to Comcast.”
The Comcastroturf website violates a law against “using domain names that are identical or confusingly similar to someone else’s trademark,” the letter said.

The new Rainbow Six Siege update should now be available for everyone to download in the UK on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
Ubisoft timetable for the new patch notes puts all platforms as having received the new Rainbow Six Siege 2.1.3 Operators tweaks by this time.
While it isn’t the Rainbow Six Siege new Operators fans have been waiting for, the latest update does make a lot of changes to existing loadouts and abilities.
The four main improvements have been listed by Ubisoft as:
Tweaks to Glaz’s scope should make it easier to know when a shot lands or misses:
“After shipping the new scope for Glaz with the Velvet Shell Mid-Season Reinforcements, we noticed that the blood splatter visual effects were not working properly.
“This called into question whether hits would land on the player’s opponent or not. We have also reduced the noise created by the thermal lens, which caused the yellow highlight to bleed from the edges of the character, which gave the player a false sense of where the opponent’s body begins and ends.
“As a result, players will be able to see much better when a hit lands and when it doesn’t.”
Rainbow Six Siege notes for Glaz:
Montagne’s LFP586 hip fire spread has been increased:
“We felt like Montagne paired with the LFP586 + laser sight was overall too strong at medium and longer range encounters, so we have increased the hip fire spread of the gun. Montagne won’t be able to quickly shut down his opponent without having to expose himself anymore, given that there is a decent distance between the two.”
Hibana’s X-KAIROS Pellet Bug Status:
“We have been investigating the issue with Hibana’s gadget randomly not detonating for a long time, and once we found the resolution to this issue we realized it is much more complex than we had expected. After significant testing and tweaking, we decided that the only way to resolve the issue was to rebuild the backend design of Hibana’s gadget.
“This is not an easy task, but we have targeted this to be completed within Y2S2. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
Rainbow Six Siege Pellet bug patch notes:
There have also been a number of other bug fixes and performance improvements deployed by Ubisoft, all of which can be found below in the official Rainbow Six Siege patch notes:
