With each passing moment in Far Cry 5, I was astounded at how outright crazy things could get with just a small amount of input from me. Traversing rural America while trying to depose a religious cult leader may be the start and finish of the story but what really makes Far Cry 5 an interesting game is everything done in between.

Starting off as the unnamed and silent deputy, I was briefly given a small amount of information on the leader of the cult “Eden’s Gate”.

Headed up by Joseph Seed, it was clear that this family was up to no good. It doesn’t take long before as expected, the plan to arrest Joseph goes south.

It takes a short amount of time until you have a vendetta to take out not only Joseph but his three siblings who all control a different area of Hope County as well as different aspects of the running of this cult.

Each Seed child has motives that change the gameplay in their local area.

It’s an interesting premise and is set up really well but after the opening half hour or so, the story seems to come second to actually getting out into the world.

It’s certainly a positive that as soon as the training wheels are off that the whole world is there to be explored and conquered in any way necessary; but the freedom comes at the detriment of telling an interesting tale.

When you are set free on the game world, every corner of the map is explorable. There’s no funnelling towards any “correct” path; just a pat on the back and “go fix this problem”. It was simple to go out into the world and find the tools to use to really make an impact. Within the first hour, a helicopter was there for the taking.

Unlike other games that may gate these kinds of things off until a player has “put in the time” to explore the world, Far Cry 5 seems to want to let players have the fun that they want to have.

A helicopter certainly isn’t required to enjoy the beauty of Hope County. Every area is filled with natural beauty and provides a real sense of scale. Large trees give off an imposing feeling and rivers look like they have been carved by years of ceaseless flowing.

This is in stark contrast to some of the horrors going on in the area though. Cultist strongholds feel gritty and everywhere you look some kind of horror has occurred.

As with many Ubisoft games, the open world of Far Cry 5 has plenty to be getting on with. From taking over the cultist strongholds, working with allies or making sure that civilians are safe; the game provides something interesting to be working towards at all times.

Even when travelling from point to point, stumbling across cultists doing the same can provide a wild scenario to unfold.

The companions met along the way all provide various support on the quest to overthrow the grip that the Seed family have on Hope County. Some of these are just your regular human companions, some are far more special than that.

The animal companions are really where it’s at; especially Cheeseburger the Bear. These companions really make for some interesting events to happen when in the middle of combat and really add to the fun.

Fun is at the heart of this game. The ability to go out and just make of this world what you want. It certainly has had an impact on the way they are able to progress the story as other than the opening hour and the final act, it really doesn’t seem to be in the forefront at all. This is a shame as the characters here have the potential to carry the narrative a lot further than it’s ever allowed to do so.

Ultimately, this doesn’t stop Far Cry 5 from being an incredibly entertaining game. Each moment provides something a little different to experience. The location allows for a fresh new perspective on the same style of gameplay that has made previous games in the series fun to play.

No other Far Cry game has felt this open, entertaining or polished. If having this beautifully exciting world to roam is what we get for sacrificing a more in-depth story, then I won’t be one to argue. There is more than enough to do in the world to keep you interested.

Larry Ellison’s slide clicker failed during his Oracle OpenWorld keynote (ORCL) https://briefnews.eu/larry-ellisons-slide-clicker-failed-during-his-oracle-openworld-keynote-orcl/ https://briefnews.eu/larry-ellisons-slide-clicker-failed-during-his-oracle-openworld-keynote-orcl/#respond Mon, 02 Oct 2017 03:50:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/larry-ellisons-slide-clicker-failed-during-his-oracle-openworld-keynote-orcl/ LarryClickerOracle

Oracle may have just announced a new fully-automated database, but there’s one area where the company is still dependent on humans: Larry Ellison’s presentation clicker.

When the executive chairman took the stage Sunday night for the opening keynote of Oracle OpenWorld, he found himself struggling to keep his presentation slideshow aligned with where he was in his talk.

That’s when Ellison told the audience his showbiz secret: Despite appearances, the presentation clicker doesn’t actually control which slides are shown to the audience. It’s just a way of communicating with the theater technician to get them to manually change the slides.

“All my button does is notify a human being. It’s really not automation at all. It’s fake automation. If it was real automation, that would not have happened,” Ellison said.

To solve the problem, Ellison put down his clicker, and said “next slide” out loud whenever he needed the presentation changed.

The trouble, however, didn’t end there. Toward the end of his presentation, Ellison said that one of his slides had been deleted, and later that they were out of order.

“Someone rearranged my slides. It’s okay,” Ellison said.

Destiny 2’s open-world design may finally plug the endgame gap https://briefnews.eu/destiny-2s-open-world-design-may-finally-plug-the-endgame-gap/ https://briefnews.eu/destiny-2s-open-world-design-may-finally-plug-the-endgame-gap/#respond Sun, 03 Sep 2017 21:29:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/destiny-2s-open-world-design-may-finally-plug-the-endgame-gap/ Destiny 2 European Dead Zone screenshot

“Endgame” is typically a design element that we associate with massively multiplayer online role-playing games like Guild Wars 2, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and World of Warcraft. Endgame content preoccupies a player when narrative content and traditional methods of tracking player progression like leveling have tapped out. It’s the endgame content in an MMO that keeps players online and paying.

Endgame design has long troubled MMO studios. Some have called it “the worst thing that ever happened to MMOs.” But solutions do exist, one of which is to make sure that everything the player does is fun for its own sake. Endgame content should be worth repeating purely for the skill challenge, as players discover and want to test new weapons and abilities against familiar scenarios.

The original Destiny failed the endgame test. Crucible matches, strikes, weekly nightfall strikes, and raids were all Destiny had to offer players in September 2014, and they weren’t enough to satisfy the hardcore Destiny players that rapidly spent hundreds of hours logging into the game.

Perhaps Bungie expected to plug the endgame gap with activities set on the open-world maps of earth, the moon, Venus, and Mars. The patrol missions and bounties of vanilla Destiny are glorified errands, however. Landing headshots, scoring melee kills, scanning objects, and collecting items could only remain interesting for so long.

The Dark Below expansion added hive invasions. The House of Wolves expansion added Fallen skiff attacks. And The Taken King expansion added Taken infestations across all four of Destiny’s open-world maps. The Prison of Elders, the Court of Oryx, and Archon’s Forge co-op activities also became available over time. A new player today might be overwhelmed with quality choices for player-versus-environment endgame content.

Overwhelming choices might also fairly describe my experience with Destiny 2’s European Dead Zone open-world map at publisher Activision’s event in Bellevue, Washington, where GamesBeat recorded some fantastic video.

What’s encouraging

Public events

The first Destiny’s open-world public events were erratic, and completing public events was sometimes necessary to finish a quest. Players addressed the problem by creating web-based trackers to try and pin down which public event would spawn on which planet at which time. The trackers weren’t always accurate, and it took a while to travel from planet to planet in Destiny 1. Anyone trying to track down public events spent a lot of time standing around and waiting.

Destiny 2 spares players the need to check an external tracker by displaying the times and locations of public events across all four of the upcoming sequel’s open maps. Destiny 2 players will also be able to fast-travel seamlessly among points of interest on all four worlds. That means players can cycle through all four open maps looking for a public event that’s about to touch down, teleport to somewhere near that location from anywhere else in the game, and then join the public event simply and smoothly.

In fact, chasing public events may become the most efficient way to grind for gear in Destiny 2. It would lead to a frenetic dash from world to world, facing a brutal progression of activities in order to roll some loot dice, and it would be glorious.

Heroic versions of public events

In addition to being predictable, public events in Destiny 2 will sometimes feature a new level of mechanics, making it possible for players to face a tougher challenge. Fighting six-legged Fallen Walker tanks is nothing new. Destiny 2 turns this familiar public-event type into something that looks borrowed from a raid.

When it becomes disabled, the Fallen Walker ejects arc charges that deposit into puzzle elements to unlock a second, more brutal version of the public event — where a second Fallen Walker joins the fray. When public events like these heroic versions force Destiny 2 players to cooperate, they become virtual training for the basic puzzle-solving teamwork required to be successful at raids.

Lost Sector mini-dungeons

The two Lost Sectors we explored in the European Dead Zone were holes in the ground that we jumped into, revealing caves of Fallen or Cabal enemies, which led to extremely close-range duels with powerful boss enemies. Lost Sectors were tough to solo. They are well suited to the casual Destiny 2 player who wants to log in for half an hour and still have something challenging and meaningful to do.

Patrols and adventures

Patrols are the bane of the original Destiny. Players accessed them through glowing beacons embedded in the ground throughout the open maps. Patrols that involved killing enemies or gathering items were simple. They were also excruciatingly boring when presented as the mainstay of the available, open-world content.

Destiny 2 also features patrols. But when they are part of a much larger collection of other things to do, they don’t feel too tedious. That said, we’d much rather do adventures than go on patrol in Destiny 2 because adventures are like a rank-up for patrols.

Adventures feature the same sort of “kill X number of enemies” and “collect Y number of materials” tasks as patrols — but this time set in a narrative context. The adventure usually ends with a boss fight that any passing player can jump into. Several adventure endings in the open world began to feel like familiar spawns after many hours exploring the European Dead Zone, and I would often jump into adventure boss battles to help others out the way I’d been helped myself. So begins the spirit of a community.

Good endgame design is at the heart of Destiny 2

In addition to all the activities discussed above, we also found high-value, powerful targets — who dropped loot chests — wandering around in the middle of other activities. It was possible to be running a patrol, a public event, and be helping someone else with an adventure ending while taking down a high-value target simultaneously. It almost felt like there was too much to do, a complaint that Bungie would have been thrilled to hear when Destiny launched.

What’s worrisome

Small chunks of Destiny 2 need to be satisfying over weeks and months in order for Destiny 2’s endgame to have a chance at hooking players’ long-term attention. Based on our time spent so far in the European Dead Zone, Destiny 2’s open-world content is engaging, varied, and fun.

The claustrophobia of a Lost Sector versus a huge, explosion-filled adventure, followed by a conflagration of a public event that fades into a lazy patrol, with high-value targets constantly wading through all the other action, could be a short and eventful evening of Destiny 2 for the casual player.

Casual players are not the players that keep an MMO going for the long haul, however. It’s the endgame-focused power players that provide the driving momentum for an MMO and its community. How long will this plethora of open-world choices remain fresh when serious endgame Destiny 1 players like myself will be grinding the game for 18 hours a day?

No one will begin to get an answer before Destiny 2 releases on September 6.

‘The Division’ finally adds to its open-world game map https://briefnews.eu/the-division-finally-adds-to-its-open-world-game-map/ https://briefnews.eu/the-division-finally-adds-to-its-open-world-game-map/#respond Sun, 03 Sep 2017 07:01:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-division-finally-adds-to-its-open-world-game-map/

After spending much of the past year upgrading The Division‘s core gameplay and its player-versus-player content, Ubisoft is ready to turn its attention to fresh player-versus-environment material — and that finally includes a new area to play in. The free Resistance update will add the West Side Pier, a two-zone map expansion that includes its own social space and unusual combat environments like the USS Intrepid. And importantly, this isn’t just more of the usual AI grind. In a livestream, Ubi revealed that there will be frequent alerts for new events, short-term mini assignments (new ones will pop up every 15 to 20 minutes) and dynamic enemy spawning. If you finish those smaller tasks, you’ll get the same Division Tech resources that you would normally have to earn in the PvP Dark Zone area.

The update will also add a namesake Resistance mode, which has up to four players taking on waves of enemies (read: it’s a horde mode), as well as a four-on-four Skirmish that resembles a classic time-based multiplayer match, just with the requirement that you finish players off for your kills to count. Ubisoft plans to release the upgrade in the fall.

The addition could be welcome by loyal Division players who’ve been aching for more dramatic updates to the open-world title. There will be a strong incentive to keep coming back to the game even if you hate the Dark Zone. As Kotaku notes, though, there’s a big problem: the awkward timing. Word of the Resistance update is coming just before the launch of Destiny 2 — you know, that other shared-world shooter. The Division update is free to existing owners, but it may struggle to compete for attention when D2 is promising a fresh experience (especially for Destiny newcomers) and has a marketing juggernaut behind it.

Open-world adventure game ‘Rime’ comes to the Switch this November https://briefnews.eu/open-world-adventure-game-rime-comes-to-the-switch-this-november/ https://briefnews.eu/open-world-adventure-game-rime-comes-to-the-switch-this-november/#respond Fri, 04 Aug 2017 01:08:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/open-world-adventure-game-rime-comes-to-the-switch-this-november/

Tequila Works’ highly-anticipated indie game Rime, formerly planned as a PS4 exclusive, is also headed to PC, the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. While some were worried the open-world adventure would cost more on the Switch (it won’t), Rime will still take longer to arrive on Nintendo’s portable console. The publishers have finally announced a release date for the title: November 14th for North American Switch owners and November 17th for European ones.

The digital download version of Rime will run $ 30 on the Nintendo eShop, while a physical copy with a code to download the soundtrack will set you back $ 40. “As big fans of Nintendo, we truly appreciate our fans’ patience as Tantalus and Tequila Works continue working on Rime on Nintendo Switch; we are all committed to making sure all players get the high-quality experience they deserve,” said Tequila Works’ CEO Raúl Rubio Munárriz in a statement.

Anthem is Bioware’s open-world sci-fi shooter with jetpacks https://briefnews.eu/anthem-is-biowares-open-world-sci-fi-shooter-with-jetpacks/ https://briefnews.eu/anthem-is-biowares-open-world-sci-fi-shooter-with-jetpacks/#respond Mon, 12 Jun 2017 02:53:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/anthem-is-biowares-open-world-sci-fi-shooter-with-jetpacks/

Bioware—the studio behind the likes of Mass Effect and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic—has a new sci-fi game in the works. Dubbed Anthem, the game is a third-person MMO shooter featuring exo-suit combat, a lush open world, and four-player co-op. Also, jetpacks.

Following a brief reveal at EA’s E3 2017 showcase, Anthem got a much more detailed outing at the Microsoft press conference. Running on EA’s Frostbite engine, the Anthem demo showcased giant AT-AT-like robotic walkers alongside what appeared to be a vast open-world filled with nasty creatures and alien enemies called “Scars.”

Roam free: A history of open-world gaming https://briefnews.eu/roam-free-a-history-of-open-world-gaming/ https://briefnews.eu/roam-free-a-history-of-open-world-gaming/#respond Sun, 26 Mar 2017 05:05:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/roam-free-a-history-of-open-world-gaming/

Open-world video games bear the impossible promise—offering compelling, enjoyable open-endedness and freedom within the constraints of what is, by necessity of the medium, an extremely limited set of possible actions. These games provide a list of (predominantly violent) verbs that’s minuscule in comparison to the options you would face in identical real-life situations. Yet, we can’t get enough of them.

In spite of their many obvious failings or limitations, we’ve been losing ourselves within open worlds for some 30-odd years. Today, nearly every big release is set in an open world. We delight in their unspoken possibility and shrug at their quirks.

Those quirks, by the way, are not merely a consequence of current technology. The oddities of modern open-world games have origins in the games that came before. We’re not talking about just the earlier Grand Theft Autos—even the first GTA built on the foundations set by more than a decade of prior open-world games.
