In early August, Boeing’s Leanne Caret and SpaceX’s Gwynne Shotwell took the stage at Johnson Space Center to announce the first astronauts who will fly on their commercial crew spacecraft. It was a significant moment to see two of the most powerful women in aerospace alongside one another—two fierce competitors coming together for the good of the country.

As president and chief executive officer of Boeing’s Defense, Space, & Security unit, Caret said the company took pride in working with NASA and the aerospace industry to bring a human space launch capability back to America. “All of us are here today because we stand for something new and profound,” Caret said. “It is personal for all of us in this room, together, returning American astronauts on American rockets from US soil and creating endless possibilities for generations to come.”

Around this time, half a dozen newspapers across the country—several in key space markets—began publishing an op-ed that criticized the process by which Boeing competitor SpaceX fuels its Falcon 9 rocket. The first op-ed appeared in a Memphis newspaper a week before the commercial crew announcement. In recent weeks, copies of the op-ed have also appeared in the Houston Chronicle, various Alabama newspapers, Albuquerque Journal, Florida Today, and The Washington Times.

Former FBI director James Comey has piped up about the bureau’s investigation into Supreme
Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, saying it is “idiotic” to have a “shot clock.” His critics, both left and right, were not amused.

The FBI opened a background investigation into Kavanaugh – his seventh – on Friday, after the White House humored the demands of Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee and one Republican, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Arizona). Though initially fine with the investigation wrapping up by this Friday, the Democrats are now asking it to be unlimited in time and scope – and Comey, writing in the New York Times, agreed.

A number of people quickly observed that Comey doesn’t have a leg to stand on, given that he actually admitted putting a “shot clock” on the FBI probe of Hillary Clinton’s email use, due to the 2016 presidential election.

Comey also claimed FBI agents could do the job in a week, because they are good at sorting out lies from truth. Or are they?

The former FBI director also echoed a Democrat talking point of “obvious lies by the nominee about the meaning of words in a yearbook,” calling them a “flashing signal to dig deeper.” This got him flak from Republicans – but also from Democrats who argued he was lending legitimacy what they called “an illegitimate process.”

For some conservative commentators, Comey’s op-ed was proof of his partisanship, as they brought up his role in promoting the “Russiagate” narrative and using the Steele Dossier to obtain a spying warrant for a Trump campaign adviser – issues that are still being investigated by both Congress and internal inspectors at the Department of Justice.

To suggest otherwise is a lie. Justice in my America is blind.”

Facebook and YouTube both have strict rules against posting content that is hateful, pornographic, or violates someone’s privacy. But what if someone posts content that is just egregiously false? Right now, neither Facebook nor YouTube have rules banning this kind of content. And critics say that’s a problem.

In recent weeks, the issue has come to a head over online provocateur, pundit, and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Jones gleefully flouts the rules of journalistic ethics, regularly making outrageous claims without a shred of evidence.

“When I think about all the children Hillary Clinton has personally murdered and chopped up and raped, I have zero fear standing up against her,” Jones said in one YouTube video.

Game companies now lean heavily on loot boxes to monetize their products. Legislators around the world are threatening to impose regulations on the boxes, claiming that they’re gambling. Industry groups, however, insist that the boxes are not.

I play games that are funded with loot boxes. My favorite game of all time, Dota 2, is funded almost exclusively through loot boxes. Regulations that tightly restrict or absolutely prohibit loot boxes will definitely hurt the gaming industry and will hurt, perhaps even fatally, games I love. There will definitely be economic harm, and games companies will have to figure something out to fill the monetary gap. It’s no surprise that game companies are defending the practice.

But here’s the thing: loot boxes are gambling. The essential features of the transaction match those of gambling, the reward pathways and addiction mechanisms are those of gambling, and playing dumb about it, as the industry is currently doing, is a bad look.

In an op-ed written for NBC News Think on Thursday, actor Bill Murray compared the student activists that arose from the Parkland, Florida, school shooting to the student protestors who played a part in bringing an end to the Vietnam War in the 1970s. 

“I was thinking, looking at the kids in Parkland, Florida who have started these anti-gun protests, that it really was the students that began the end of the Vietnam War,” Murray wrote. “It was the students who made all the news, and that noise started, and then the movement wouldn’t stop. I think, maybe, this noise that those students in Florida are making — here, today — will do something of the same nature.”

There were plenty of striking things about Monday’s budget news, given that it contained lots of draconian cuts that were simultaneously restored because Congress had boosted spending the week before. But perhaps the most striking among them was an item in the proposed budget for NASA: Trump wants to shut off a perfectly functional satellite.

That in itself is pretty shocking. But to truly appreciate just how awful this is, you have to understand the history of that satellite and what it means to the scientific community as a whole. So let’s step back and take a look at why the Orbiting Carbon Observatory (or OCO) exists in the first place. It turns out it was built specifically to handle some outstanding questions of the sort that people in the administration say are important, and killing it would be an even larger waste of taxpayers’ money than it may first appear.

Real uncertainty

The Orbiting Carbon Observatory’s primary job is to see what’s happening to the carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere. You may think that’s a solved issue: we’re emitting a lot, and levels are going up. And that’s true to a point. But once you pass that point, you enter a world where there are lots of details, and many of them matter.

Today, YouTube announced that it has temporarily suspended all ads on 22-year-old prankster Logan Paul’s channel, cutting off what is estimated to be nearly $ 1 million in monthly revenue. The crackdown came after Paul pulled a live fish from the water to give it faux CPR as it squirmed, then shot a dead rat with a taser in one of the first videos after his return.

Paul had taken a hiatus from YouTube after he was rightly and widely criticized for uploading a video with a dead body he found in a forest in Japan known for its suicides. Initially, he returned with an apologetic video and a promise to change his ways and focus efforts on suicide prevention. Very quickly, though, he was back to his old antics.

YouTube provided the following statement to The Washington Post when it announced the suspension:

This week, we learned that the US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission are investigating whether Apple took actions that violated securities laws when it throttled certain iPhones’ performance without informing investors or users. This follows previous reports of class action lawsuits on behalf of consumers as well as public officials from both the United States and France calling for answers.

Consumers and many members of the press have been outraged. Some have gone so far as to accuse Apple of throttling the phones to make them obsolete more quickly so consumers would have to upgrade, and they insist that users should have been able to choose whether their phones did this or not. Other critics have simply said Apple should have at least been more transparent about the throttling.

It’s easy to poke holes in the theory that Apple implemented throttling to drive quicker adoption of new phones (which we’ll get into shortly). Whether most users should have been given the choice is debatable. But Apple definitely should have been more transparent.

  • Conservative voices have spent months casting doubt on the dossier filled with claims about Trump’s interactions with the Kremlin, and on the federal investigation of Russia’s meddling in the US election.

The co-founders of the opposition research firm Fusion GPS defended themselves on Tuesday against attempts by President Donald Trump’s allies in the media and Congress to “punish” Fusion for investigating Trump’s ties to Russia. 

Glenn Simpson and Peter Fritsch, two former Wall Street Journal reporters who founded Fusion GPS in 2011, wrote a New York Times op-ed amid intensifying calls from GOP lawmakers to investigate whether the Steele dossier — a collection of memos written by a former British spy, Christopher Steele, outlining Trump’s purported ties to Russia — triggered the FBI’s investigation into the Trump campaign. 

House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes has been examining Fusion and Steele aggressively since he stepped aside from the panel’s Russia probe in April amid an ethics investigation. He subpoenaed Fusion’s bank records last year and has threatened to hold FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Jeff Sessions in contempt if they do not hand over information about the dossier and what the FBI did with it.

Simpson and Fritsch wrote:

“A generation ago, Republicans sought to protect President Richard Nixon by urging the Senate Watergate committee to look at supposed wrongdoing by Democrats in previous elections. The committee chairman, Sam Ervin, a Democrat, said that would be “as foolish as the man who went bear hunting and stopped to chase rabbits.”

Today, amid a growing criminal inquiry into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, congressional Republicans are again chasing rabbits. We know because we’re their favorite quarry.”

Simpson and Fritsch noted that they were interviewed by three separate congressional committees last year over the course of 21 hours. Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley said in August, after Fusion testified, that the committee would vote on whether to release the full transcript. 

“Republicans have refused to release full transcripts of our firm’s testimony, even as they selectively leak details to media outlets on the far right,” they wrote. “It’s time to share what our company told investigators.”

According to the op-ed, Simpson and Fritsch told lawmakers that they should investigate Trump’s history with Deutsche Bank, his real-estate deals with “dubious Russians in arrangements that often raised questions about money laundering,” and his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s “coziness with Moscow and financial ties to Russian oligarchs close to Vladimir Putin.”

“Yes, we hired Mr. Steele, a highly respected Russia expert,” they continued. “But we did so without informing him whom we were working for and gave him no specific marching orders beyond this basic question: Why did Mr. Trump repeatedly seek to do deals in a notoriously corrupt police state that most serious investors shun?”

The FBI had received copies of Steele’s first few memos by early August and took them seriously.

In a line that sparked extensive speculation on social media, Simpson and Fritsch wrote that they told the Senate Judiciary Committee that the dossier was taken seriously by the FBI because it “corroborated reports the bureau had received from other sources, including one inside the Trump camp.”

That was not a reference to a mole inside the Trump campaign who was feeding information directly to the FBI, a person with knowledge of Fusion’s testimony and the op-ed told Business Insider on Tuesday. Rather, it was a reference to George Papadopoulos — the young Trump campaign foreign-policy adviser who drunkenly told an Australian diplomat in May 2016 about “dirt” the Russians had on Hillary Clinton. 

Fusion never told the committee that the source was a direct one, and didn’t name Papadopoulos at the time, the person said. 

Simpson and Fritsch emphasized in their op-ed that the Steele dossier was “but one chapter” of Fusion’s yearlong attempt — funded initially by the conservative billionaire Paul Singer — “to decipher Trump’s complex business past.” They added that Fusion never spoke to the FBI, but deferred to Steele when he felt he needed to report what he had uncovered.

“After the election, Mr. Steele decided to share his intelligence with Senator John McCain via an emissary,” Simpson and Fritsch added. “We helped him do that. The goal was to alert the United States national security community to an attack on our country by a hostile foreign power.”
