Alex Jones was left on her own on The One Show today as the BBC programme opened with an empty spot to her right-hand side. It soon became clear her co-host Matt Baker had “self-isolated” and would be “working from home” as coronavirus fears and prevention measures continue to dominate conversation.

Alex opened The One Show in peculiar fashion as there was a clear gap to her right-hand side.

Trying to stay positive, Alex chimed: “Well hello, and welcome to your Tuesday’s One Show with me, Alex Jones,

“As you can see, look, the sofa is empty. No Matt Baker.

“Like so many of you, he’s working from home today.”

Moments later, Matt then appeared in the studio via video link to fill Alex and The One Show viewers in.

Speaking to Alex from his living room, Matt was joined by his pet dog.

He told Alex: “Yep, well, I’m at home, this is my Alex Jones tonight (his dog), this is Bob (laughs).

“This afternoon we had the phone call, there’s four of us here in our household, one of us has a cough,

“So that means we’re following the Prime Minister’s advice.”

 

Matt then added: “So yeah, we’re spending the next two weeks self-isolating.”

The Countryfile host remained in good spirits, however, as continued to converse with his co-host.

Matt said: “To be honest with you Al, we kind of expected this to come and feel as ready as we can do.

“(We’re) more than happy to do our bit and do what’s right for everybody and look out for our neighbours.

The One Show continues every weeknight at 7pm on BBC One.

The practice of incorporating microtransactions and loot boxes into video games has grown from sporadic to omnipresent in recent years. 2017 saw the loot box trend explode and even bleed over from a “cosmetic” model to one that affects gameplay. But in-game items like loot boxes—which commonly appear in multiplayer games—are worthless to publishers if players don’t engage with them.

Game publisher Activision has already patented a way to drive in-game purchases by manipulating “matchmaking,” or how players are paired up with strangers in online multiplayer games. This week, eagle-eyed YouTuber YongYea deserves credit for discovering a similar, though not identical, matchmaking-manipulation scheme being researched and promoted by researchers at game publisher EA.

The discovered papers emphasize ways to keep players “engaged” with different types of games, as opposed to quitting them early, by manipulating their difficulty without necessarily telling players. These papers were published as part of a conference in April 2017, and they indicate that EA’s difficulty- and matchmaking-manipulation efforts may have already been tested in live games, may be tested in future games, and are officially described as a means to fulfill the “objective function” of, among other things, getting players to “spend” money in games.

The Donald J. Trump Foundation, President Donald Trump’s charitable foundation, said it’s shutting down after it admitted in 2016 that it had violated federal rules on “self-dealing,” NBC News reported Monday.

The foundation admitted to violating the self-dealing law, in which a nonprofit’s leaders, such as Trump or his agents, are prohibited from channeling funds to their businesses, families, or themselves, NBC News said.

In a 2015 tax filing, the foundation acknowledged that it had violated the self-dealing law; however, for 2016’s filing, it reported that it hadn’t. The foundation was under investigation during the 2016 US presidential election after it was discovered that it may have misused its funds, including allegedly using it to settle lawsuits.

A spokesperson for the New York state attorney general’s office told NBC News that the foundation cannot shut down while it is currently under investigation, which could potentially complicate the dissolution. 

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman ordered the foundation to stop soliciting contributions in October 2016, and Trump later announced that he intended to dissolve the foundation in order to avoid conflicts of interest, NBC News reported at the time.

The US Congress championed the creation of NASA’s Space Launch System rocket in 2010, at which time its members also successfully beat back an effort by the Obama administration to end support for the Orion spacecraft. Since then, Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate have patiently spent $ 3 billion to $ 4 billion annually for continued development of these deep space vehicles.

However, in recent years the projected launch date of the first flight of the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft has slipped to the right, from 2017 to 2018 and now likely into mid-2020. While overall support remains strong for these space vehicles, delays in their development may have begun to break the almost uniform congressional approbation for these exploration programs.

During a hearing Thursday before a House subcommittee over NASA, some of those concerns spilled into the public. “It is very disappointing to hear about delays caused by poor execution when the US taxpayer has invested so much in these programs,” said Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), chairman of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee. “NASA and the contractors should not assume future delays and cost overruns will have no consequences.”

Twitter is introducing a new feature to timelines that will keep you up to date on particular ongoing events. At the top of your timeline, you’ll start to see a Happening Now label that will show you all of the events and current topics Twitter thinks you’re interested in, which when clicked, will take you to tweets people have posted about them.

Each event will have a little downward facing arrow in the top right corner. Tap that if you want to see why Twitter thinks you’re interested in it or to hide it from your timeline. This new feature joins other recent Twitter additions including expanded tweet limits and an upcoming bookmarking function. As of now, Happening Now will only include sports events, but Twitter says the feature will be expanded in the coming months to include things like breaking news and entertainment developments.

New research shows that despite the impact of ongoing Brexit negotiations on the political climate, life still carries on regardless for UK home movers. 

With 71 per cent not even considering Brexit when planning their next house purchase, it would seem the impending EU departure is having little or not impact on consumer confidence. 

Brian Murphy, Head of Lending for Mortgage Advice Bureau, the company which carried out the research, said: “The fact that 71 per cent of those planning a home move did not see Brexit as an influencing factor in their decision making process is perhaps surprising news for those who may want to paint a pessimistic picture of the current UK housing market.

“In fact, this report should be regarded as a reality check and a reminder of the fact that, for most, a home move is driven primarily by personal circumstances rather than economics or politics, something that’s clearly evidenced by our research, with almost two thirds of respondents highlighting changes in lifestyle as the key factors driving their decision to move home.”

The report also found that those aged 25 to 34 were most likely to be unaffected by Brexit, which is possibly unsurprising with 38 per cent of the game age range citing a growing family as the reason for their move. 

Brian explained: “There would seem to be mixed opinion and amongst consumers regarding what the future may hold for housing prices with 30 per cent expecting a fall over the next 12 months and 29 per cent expecting them to rise as a result of the UK leaving the European Union. 

“However, whilst property prices will undoubtedly continue to be a consideration for those planning they next home move, most would appear to be shrewd in their financial planning and are taking advantage of the plethora of competitive deals available, with over 58 per cent of survey respondents choosing to fix their mortgage interest rate for five years or more, enabling them to budget for the long term by capping what for most is their largest single monthly expense. 

“Overall, the poll gives us valuable insight into consumer sentiment and would indicate that homeowners who are motivated to move are not being swayed by the political negotiations, with consumer confidence in property seemingly still high.” 

According to a recent House Price Index for August, house prices in the UK are at a slightly slower pace than the last few months, but this could have a positive impact on first time buyers. 

Nationwide released figures last week, and Brian explained what he thought the cool down in prices means for homeowners and the wider economy. 

He said: “The figures suggest that house price growth is still evident, albeit at a slightly slower pace than previously, with annual house price growth at 2.1 per cent in August, and a slight month on month decrease (0.1 per cent). 

“Contrasting these figures with the same time last year, we can see that in August 2016, annual house price growth was at 5.6 per cent, which could suggest that while annual property value increases this year are still in positive territory, the market is cooling slightly. 

“Having said that, with annual growth remaining around the 2 per cent figure, the market is operating absolutely in line with market forecasts for 2017.” 

Brian said there are a number of factors which could be responsible for current market conditions. 

He said: “Ongoing consumer demand and continuing lack of supply are perhaps maintaining prices at 10 per cent above the 2007 peak, whilst lack of wage growth is having an effect on mortgage affordability, meaning that those coming to the market currently do have an upper limit in terms of borrowing, which of course suggests that vendors have to be realistic about pricing in order to sell. 

“It’s also possible that the continued lack of buy to let investors, due to income tax and SDLT changes, is having an effect on values, albeit that the impact of this group not being as active as they have been in recent years has perhaps taken some time to ripple through and have a tangible impact on values.”
