Kocher is a three-time Olympian in biathlon, which combines rifle shooting with cross-country skiing.
Biathlon: The Sport3:14
After retiring from the sport in 2016, she simply saw the cross-country nationals as a welcome distraction from her full-time studies in massage therapy at Mount Royal University in Calgary.
Still in phenomenal physical shape, she won gold in the women’s five-kilometre skate ski race and then silver in the 30-kilometre skate ski.
Those two unexpected medals got her thinking: Why not come out of retirement in hopes of qualifying as a cross-country skier for the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea?
What did she have to lose?
“My coach Richard Boruta thought it was a great idea for me to give it a try,” says Kocher, 34. “He thought it would be a really fun challenge and that I had a good chance, especially after taking time away from sport.”
Concerned about delaying her schooling, Kocher couldn’t make up her mind. She hemmed. She hawed.
And then, on Aug. 9, Boruta tumbled to his death in a mountain-climbing accident just outside of Canmore. He was only 49.

That very day, Kocher committed to dropping down to part-time studies in hopes of chasing down a spot on the Canadian Olympic team.
“I think I would regret it if I hadn’t tried, whether it works out or not,” she says. “I had to give it a shot.
“Even though I wanted to do this with Richard, I decided I would regret not doing it at all. He can still be there with me, and I can honour him in going through with it.”
Eighteen months after retiring, Kocher is going through with it. She remains one of Canada’s best skate skiers — the technique used in biathlon — but still needs to master the classic technique. She must prove herself in both in order to book a ticket to her fourth Olympic Games. (Canada is expected to send at least five female cross-country skiers to Pyeongchang based on World Cup and Olympic trial results.)
“I have high expectations of myself,” Kocher says. “I put a lot of effort into everything I do. But I’m also way more relaxed about everything at this point in my life.
“Making the Olympics may happen — or it may not — but it doesn’t define me as it did before.”

Like many elite athletes, Kocher used to let her sport consume her waking hours. But her passions these days extend way beyond the gym or mountain.
She is a student. She is a trained doula, providing support to mothers before, during and after childbirth. And she also got married this summer to (literally) the boy next door, Alex Lawson.
“I met him online, but he happened to live next door,” she says. “I’m a bit embarrassed to say we met on Tinder.”
Born and raised in Red Deer, Alta., Kocher learned to cross-country ski at the River Bend Golf Course and Heritage Ranch. At age 15, she put a rifle on her back and tried out biathlon.
Two years later, she moved to the Rocky Mountains to train at the Canmore Nordic Centre, where she met Boruta.
“Richard was a stable rock,” she says. “He was always there for you. He never changed during a race.
“It’s very easy for a coach to get nervous at a bigger event, just in the same way athletes do. But he was exactly the same whether it was the Alberta Cup or the Olympic Games.”

Under Boruta’s guidance, Kocher won bronze at a World Cup race in 2006. (She is the last Canadian woman to grace a World Cup podium in an individual biathlon event.)
At the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Kocher was a member of the 4X6-kilometre relay team that finished eighth. She also claimed 25th in the 10-kilometre pursuit.
“We always knew Zina was fast,” says Justin Wadsworth, the former head coach of the Canadian cross-country ski team who agreed to work with Kocher after Baruta died. “She knows this is going to be a challenge but, at this time of her life, it’s a fun challenge.
“She is very focused but very easy-going and just a pleasure to work with.”
On a recent fall afternoon, Kocher scrambled up Mount Lady MacDonald near Canmore and soaked up the view.
“Seize these precious days just as you should grab hold of those who are dear to your hearts,” she later wrote on Instagram. “Take the chances you feared or dared not.”
With Boruta in her heart, Kocher is taking the chance she might have dared not.
]]>As you may remember, the Lamborghini Huracán Performante‘s party pieces are vents that adjust the amount of downforce applied to either the left or right side. This helps keep the car level in corners, and it likely contributed to the Lambo’s wickedly fast Nürburgring lap time. The astonishing Project One will not take advantage of a similar system.
Moers told us he didn’t see an advantage to such a variable system. He feels that having downforce is vital right from the moment of turn-in, and adjusting downforce left and right can’t be done quickly enough to make a difference at corner entry. And there’s no way to predictively adjust aero to prepare for a corner, at least not at this point in time. That being said, Lamborghini certainly sees merit and has said there are benefits in high-speed corners and we agree that it makes a difference.

According to Moers, 1,000-horsepower Formula 1 V6 hybrid powertrain wasn’t particularly difficult to make durable and reliable enough for daily driving on the streets. He said that the criteria from racing wasn’t too far off. One of the primary difficulties was getting the idle down from around 4,000 rpm to a more livable 1,000 rpm. Accessories like air conditioning, which usually require belt-driven compressors from the engine, were taken care of by simply powering them with electricity, something the hybrid will have plenty of.
We also gather that Mercedes will take the car to the ‘Ring to set a lap time. Unfortunately, Moers wouldn’t give us a target time the company is shooting for. After all, there are still some things to fine tune and prepare before the company starts delivering cars to customers in 2019.
Deciding who gets a Project One is another of the things Mercedes-AMG is still working on. Despite a cost of over $ 2.5 million, demand is impressively high. Moers told us that about 3-4 times as many people asking to buy one as the total allotment of 275 cars. So if you’re not already in line, well, it’s probably not gonna happen.

Based on the recent trend in gaming, survival titles are pretty big right now.
And having seen a series of successful launches on Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One, it appears the next isn’t that far away.
While PS4 gamers still have a little while to wait, Conan Exiles will soon be released on Xbox One.
August 16 is when Funcom plans to launch the new crafting title as part of Microsoft’s preview program, Sony PlayStation fans will have to wait until early in 2018.
It will be far from the finished product, although the development team have provided a sneak peek of what to expect next week.
A new trailer has been released, showcasing how the new title will look on consoles, and likely for most of its early access development.
Funcom have also confirmed that the Xbox One version is currently running at a relatively solid 30fps, with the UI is rendered at 1080p.
Conan Exiles is currently listing 900p, although this could change before the big Sony PlayStation 4 release.
But for those hoping for some kind of Nintendo Switch title launch, Funcom have confirmed that there are no current plans in place for a launch,
While many might not know much about Conan Exiles, it certainly caused a stir when launched on PC.
Selling huge numbers in its first few months on the platform, it helped expand Funcom’s original console plan.
The popular PC survival game will make its Xbox Game Preview program debut on August 16, although it should be noted that it will remain in the beta phase until at least 2018.
It was also revealed that Conan Exiles will be an Xbox One X Enhanced title when the console launches this Fall, meaning that Funcom are likely planning a pacy development phase.
The Xbox One version of the game will be up to date with the PC when it arrives in August, with a free expansion launching alongside the new Preview Program title.
Tor Egil Andersen, Communications Manager at Funcom, had this to say on the matter: “We’re also releasing a massive free expansion update on the very same day that introduces a huge new land to explore, bringing the game out of the desert and into the cold, frozen highlands in the north.
“Conan Exiles is an open-world survival game set in the brutal lands of “Conan the Barbarian.” Here you have been exiled to a harsh desert, where you must build and dominate the lands around you to survive.
“You can either play alone in single-player, in co-op with friends, or on a private or public online server populated with dozens of other players.
“With the free expansion update, we’re adding over 50% to the available play area. The new lands are a huge departure from the sun-drenched deserts of the base game, and here you get to explore vast forests and towering mountain-tops. There’s new enemies, new resources, new building pieces, and much more.
“Game Preview is about constantly improving the game, adding new content, and testing new mechanics and is a great opportunity for us as developers to work with players on creating the game we all want to play.”
The daily and weekly limited-time incursions allow fans to earn valuable funds to spend on equipment, characters and items.
BioWare has put in place a higher difficulty standard for those wanting a bigger Mass Effect Andromeda multiplayer challenge, as well as a new race to fight.
“Platinum difficulty introduces the greatest challenge yet for APEX forces,” BioWare explains.
“Platinum matches feature more enemies, stronger enemies in earlier waves, and from a variety of factions joining forces to challenge APEX members.
“Earn greater rewards by taking on the toughest challenge APEX has faced to-date.”
The official APEX site confirms there’s only 10-hours to complete the latest mission.
The new Mass Effect multiplayer adventure centres around fighting the Batarians on a new map and is available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
The Firebase Vertigo description reads: “Scattered around Voeld, these towers function as Kett outposts and surface-level entrances to underground facilities that produce and store geothermal energy, making them excellent strategic targets.”
This latest missions has dropped the earlier briefings that provided more story background, and instead focuses on what you need to do.
APEX MISSION DETAILS:
“The search for the second Batarian pirate leads to an abandoned Kett tower. We’ll send a distress signal from there. Careful though, there’s outlaw camps nearby.”
Match Difficulty: Silver
Match Modifier: Weakened Assault Team; Hand to Hand
Weakened Assault Team: “Your team’s success is dependent on your ability to work together.
“You will fight through the challenge of reduced shields and health – use of combined power and shield boosters will come in handy.”
Hand to Hand: This modifier includes a -25% weapon damage modifier and a -25% power damage along with a +100% melee damage bonus.
Last week’s mission introduced the Batarians, as well as a new map and a special weapon.
According to BioWare, The Batarians brought the Kishock Harpoon Gun to Andromeda so they could spear their enemies in an entirely new galaxy.
“The barbed harpoons stick tight and continue to cause massive internal injuries to targets over time. The projectiles drop slightly during flight unless the shooter quickly charges the rifle before firing.”
It’s unclear how many new APEX missions will arrive in the future, although based on earlier cycles it seems likely there will be at least two more.

Composer Michael Giacchino joined Rogue One very late in the game—to the point he allegedly had just four weeks to create his soundtrack for the film. The fact he even managed it was impressive, but as this video shows, Giacchino pulled off a soundtrack filled with intriguing cues and homages to the Star Wars work of John Williams.
We’ve featured the musical analysis work of YouTuber Sideways before, but their latest video on Giacchino’s work for Rogue One really helps highlight the incredible work the composer did.
The subtle hints to John William’s past Star Wars work are impressive enough, but the most intriguing reveal Sideways has for me is Giacchino’s use of the opening notes of “Dies Irae”—a strain commonly alluded to in orchestral music to symbolize impending doom and destruction—throughout his Rogue One music… which makes sense, because Rogue One is a movie all about impending doom. Cool, right?
It’s a wonderfully subtle nod to the wider themes of the movie, and all the little details like this serve to makes Giacchino’s work, created in such a tight time frame, all the more impressive.

LONDON (Reuters) – Justin Timberlake has been confirmed as the headline act at this year’s U.S. Formula One Grand Prix as organizers seek to build on the crowd-pulling success of Taylor Swift’s appearance at the 2016 race.
Timberlake, whose Oscar-nominated song ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ won him a 10th Grammy Award, will appear on stage Oct. 21 at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas (COTA) after qualifying.
Last year’s race ended a trend of declining audiences and drew a record crowd of 269,000 – with Swift’s first concert of the year watched by some 80,000 people.
“Last year did what we hoped it would do, which is not only enhance an already great event but also give us the chance to expose a lot of new people to the sport,” COTA chairman Bobby Epstein told Reuters. “And it worked.
“I think where we saw a big change was in the average number of tickets sold per transaction, which told me that families were buying. And so I think we’ll see that continue.”
The 2017 F1 season, which began in Melbourne last weekend, is the first with the sport being run by American company Liberty Media, which took control of Formula One in January.
Liberty replaced CVC Capital Partners as the sport’s commercial rights holders, with Chase Carey ousting 86-year-old Bernie Ecclestone as commercial supremo.
F1 has long struggled to get a foothold in the American market, so hopes are high that Timberlake’s performance can build on last year’s successful race weekend.
Bad weather hit the track’s revenues significantly in 2015, with Saturday’s final practice taking place behind closed doors due to flooded conditions and qualifying moved to the Sunday.
Epstein said COTA would refund 105 percent of the value of any three-day reserved seat ticket purchased by July 4 if more than two inches of rain falls in the 24-hour period before the start of the race.
In addition, the ticket would still be good for the race.

If there’s anything Star Wars fans know about Gareth Edwards, it’s that he’s a very hands-on director. A recent demonstration shows how Industrial Light and Magic found a way to bring Edwards’ physical camerawork to the digital stage for Rogue One, using virtual reality.
BBC Click shared a visit to ILM London to get a behind-the-scenes peek at Rogue One’s digital prowess, in the wake of its Visual Effects Oscar nomination. During the interview, computer graphics supervisor Steve Ellis discussed how much ILM admired Edwards’ ability to get physical with his camerawork on set, and revealed that the visual effects advisor wanted him to be able to do that digitally.
So, they created what Ellis called a real-time virtual reality system, which was basically an iPad hooked up to an HTC Vive virtual reality controller. They’d pull up a digital scene for him, like the Star Destroyer’s scary reveal at the newly constructed Death Star. Then, using Steam VR tracking, Edwards would physically move the screen around, pinpointing what angle he’d want the shot to begin at and where he would want it to end up. The VFX artists would map out the scene’s progression to match.

“He would walk around and decide where he wanted the shots to start and end,” Ellis said. “This was how Gareth was filming, moving around and finding interesting framing.”
This kind of filmmaking isn’t new. Peter Jackson used a form of augmented reality to direct VFX shots for Lord of the Rings, and a lot of advancements in simulcam tech were developed for James Cameron’s Avatar. However, Rogue One’s VR work is something else entirely… mainly because it’s so accessible. Thanks to the advancements in virtual reality, ILM was able to rig a basic tablet to a consumer-grade VR device and digitally direct a multi-million dollar picture. Director Jon Favreau said he’ll be using similar VR tech for digital site scouting and shot planning for the live-action The Lion King movie.
It’s kind of incredible how VR you could purchase at Best Buy helped make the movie such a success. Rogue One’s final battles are some of the most dynamic scenes in Star Wars history, digital or physical. Edwards may have been using a fake camera, but the movie magic was entirely real.

Xbox One Backwards Compatibility could make the transition to Windows 10 PC.
That’s according to Xbox One boss Phil Spencer, who told one Twitter follower that Microsoft hasn’t ruled it out.
However, fans probably shouldn’t get too excited, because Microsoft would have to overcome a few hurdles to make backwards compatibility a possibility on PC.
“Running BC reliably on all the different PC HW configs would be a lot more work than XB1, but never say never,” Spencer tweeted.
As for backwards compatibility support on Xbox Scorpio, Microsoft has confirmed that it will indeed be available on the high-spec Xbox One.
“The same 360 games that work on XB1 will work on Scorpio,” Spencer confirmed.
Xbox One Backwards Compatibility recently expanded with three games, including Xbox 360 versions of Stuntman: Ignition, Mad Tracks and JUJU.
That was preceded by the likes of TEKKEN 6, Midway Arcade Origins and Mutant Storm Empire.
According to the official Xbox One Backwards Compatibility voting site, Tekken 6 was the most popular of the bunch with 6,000 votes.
If you already own Backwards Compatibility titles, then they’ll automatically appear in your games and apps list. Alternatively, you can buy digital downloads from the Xbox One store and Xbox website.
As for Xbox Scorpio, Microsoft has given the console a holiday 2017 release date, and is expected to reveal more at E3 2017.
And fortunately, Xbox One won’t pay the price for the Xbox Scorpio’s improved specs when the launch date does finally roll around.
Some Xbox One fans are concerned that the Scorpio would make the original console obsolete.
However, Xbox boss Phil Spencer told Twitter followers that both the Xbox One and Scorpio would be around for years to come.
“Xbox One and S will be supported consoles for many years,” he told one fan on Twitter.
