Earlier this year, Patreon had its sights set on onboarding one of the most well-known creators on earth.
The company was in talks with Jimmy Donaldson, known to his millions of followers as MrBeast, for a deal that would see the marquee YouTuber creating subscription content, two former employees told Insider.
One of the former employees said the prospective deal "had enough zeroes to fall in the millions." The second said it could've been valued at as much as $ 10 million.
Ultimately, though, the deal never came to pass. It fell apart by July, according to the second former employee.
A representative for MrBeast declined to comment.
Ellen Satterwhite, Patreon's interim head of communications and US policy lead, told Insider that the company would not comment on personal or sensitive information about specific creators.
News of the negotiations arrives as Patreon announced cuts to its creator partnerships team, which works to onboard and support creators. Patreon founder and CEO Jack Conte wrote in a memo on September 13 that the company's creator partnerships efforts would "take a more scaled approach with a smaller, consolidated team in the US."
All told, the layoffs impacted 80 of roughly 470 staffers across various teams.
While a deal with MrBeast never materialized, other deals that Patreon closed appear to have fallen spectacularly short of expectations. Company documents obtained by Insider show that deals with TikTok megastars Larray and Lil Huddy brought in far less in their first months on the platform than the company projected.
"They saw these deals as experiments to play around with and test certain strategies," the second former employee said. "Apparently, only a few months ago, there was enough money in the bank to spend several million to sign creators with exclusively Gen-Z followings who of course can't that easily spend $ 10 or more per month for exclusive content."

Cruise captain Kate McCue, 38, is the first US woman to lead a cruise liner, taking Celebrity Cruises to the sea.
As one of the few female captains in the world, she often reveals some of the secrets of life on a cruise ship.
One common question she is often asked, according to an interview with Escape, is about driving the ship.
Worryingly, she confirmed she is rarely in the bridge when the ship is sailing.
Thankfully it is still safe without her driving the cruise liner.
“One of the questions I get asked frequently when walking around the ship is “if you’re here, then who is driving?”, assuming that I live on the bridge,” she said.
“I don’t spend 24/7 on the bridge.
“I will go up for arrivals, departures and any time the team needs me but there are a minimum of three qualified and licensed officers manning the bridge at all times so I can be around the ship.”
Thankfully, the rest of the crew are able to drive the liner so she can deal with other issues and tasks around the ship.
Cruise ships, despite their size, are extremely safe to travel on so passengers can rest assured.
They have a number of safety procedures in place for any disasters or accidents.
One of the biggest threats to cruise ship safety is norovirus, which can easily be spread across the contained environment.
Anyone who has the symptoms of norovirus is quarantined to their cabin until the contagious disease has gone.
Another threat, although less likely, is the threat of a pirate attack.
Certain routes through Africa and Asia are susceptible to attacks by pirates at night.
Cruise ships have a number of procedures to fight back against them, such as water cannons and high pitched alarms.
A terrifying video emerged last year of passengers capturing the moment pirates tried to attack a Seaboard Spirit cruise ship.
While travelling from Egypt to Kenya, the attack took place near Somalia, with the captain saying over the tannoy system: “Ladies and gentleman, stay inside. We are trying to run away from them now.
“Please stay inside everybody, this is a real alarm.”

Cruise holidays are on the rise as more millennial travellers are joining the market, something often catered to older passengers.
Travelling by cruise is often considered a great package holiday option to see a number of countries in one trip.
One down-side however is the additional costs and charges that passengers often forget about.
One, in particular, could quickly make a holiday at sea much more expensive than planned.
The onboard cash machines can often be the most expensive way to get money out before heading to the shore for an excursion.
While most things onboard can be paid for by debit or credit card, getting cash for tips or land-based activities means money is needed.
Experts at cruise website Cruzely explained: “One thing you should know is that using a cash machine on the ship is expensive.
“It’s not unusual to see fees of up to $ 6, plus anything your bank charges for taking out money.”
There is a way to get money without extortionate fees, however.
Cruise Fever explained: “Simply go to the casino, sit down at a slot machine, insert your cabin card and deposit the amount that you want to withdraw.
“Once the money is loaded into the slot machine, simply hit the ‘cash out’ button and take the ticket to the cashier to get your money.”
Passengers needing to get money should try and purchase their currency before travelling.
Otherwise, heading to land and finding an ATM within a bank is the safest option.
It is also advised not to carry a lot of money at one time, as cruise passengers can often be targeted by petty criminals.
There are a number of cost-saving methods to cruise holidays, revealed by the experts.
One is to save souvenir shopping until the last day to also save the pennies.
Some cruise lines reduce the prices of their onboard trinkets and gifts so buying presents towards the end of the trip can be better.
There is also a way to avoid wasting alcohol when ordering bottles of wine or prosecco.
Most cruise lines will allow guests to ask if they can hold the bottle for the next night, by giving the cabin number. Staff can then cork it and open it again the following night.
Cruise holidays are a popular choice with families wanting a trip around the world, yet come with a downside – long queues.
With some cruise ships able to hold more than 3,000 passengers at a time, this can often result in crowded areas.
Queues at breakfast as well as at the activities such as pool parties and climbing walls can tarnish a holiday.
Thankfully there is an easy way to beat the queues.
Adam Coulter, UK Managing Editor of Cruise Critic spoke to Express.co.uk on how to avoid them during a trip at sea.
“Port days often involve a mad dash to the gangway as soon as the all-clear has been given for passengers to start the disembarkation process,” he explained.
“Those booked on ship-sponsored shore excursions are generally given priority, but people still cluster at the exits.
“If you want to avoid all the hubbub, stay onboard (or leave the ship a bit later in the day).
“Should you choose to forgo your port day – especially if you’ve already visited a particular port on the itinerary – you can avoid crowds at the pool, in the spa, at the buffet and just about anywhere else on the ship.”
Cruises often have many holiday destinations on offer when sailing around the Caribbean.
For frequent cruise-goers, this might mean heading to similar destinations year on year.
Therefore, if there is one area that was not a favourite and not one to return to, then staying on the ship could be a better way to spend the day.
It also means having an emptier ship to walk around and experience.
There is also a way to always avoid the breakfast queue when trying to make the most of the buffet.
Travellers may not realise that they can order food from the menu during breakfast in the dining hall.
Most flock to the buffet cart to make the most of the food on offer straight away.
However free menu options not only mean avoiding the queues but also offer a much fresher option.
Some buffet options could even be days old and simply reheated.
One item that isn’t as fresh as it seems are the eggs – these are often cooked with powdered egg and other ingredients.

Cruise secrets can help passengers make the most of their trip around the world while at sea.
One of the most difficult parts of a cruise holiday is the number of people and overcrowding, with some ships holding up to 4,000 people at one time.
Thankfully, there are a number of secret decks that passengers can retreat to and avoid the hustle and bustle of travellers.
Carnival Cruises has revealed some of the decks that are unknown even to the most frequent of cruiser.
While they are called “secret decks”, they are not hidden from passengers, more that they are unknown public observation balconies.
They are often found on the front of the ship, accessed through a door on the side of the ship.
People looking to find the decks for themselves will find two doors to often go through.
Signs will warn passengers that one which must always be closed to avoid the strong winds which can be up to 50mph at the front of the ship.
They may be restricted at night and at high winds to prevent any injuries.
On Carnival Fantasy ships, the secret decks can be found on Deck 8 and Deck 11 while on Carnival Destiny, Triumph and Conquest ships, they are on Deck 5, Deck 6, Deck 7, Deck 9 and Deck 10.
Popular cruise liners Carnival Spirit and Carnival Pride do not have these secret decks, as they only have a Lido deck for all passengers.
Princess Island Cruise decks Baja and Aloha can be found at the end of the cabin, normally outside doors that read “Keep Door Closed”.
Royal Caribbean passengers can head to the helipad for some of the best views on Deck 5.
Some decks are found underneath other floors or under lifeboats and swimming pool areas.
Cruise insider Heather Fasting previously explained on Cruise Radio: “Though you may not get the sun, you can enjoy plenty of peace and quiet – accompanied of course by the calming sounds of the ocean passing beneath.”
If passengers stumble across a deck with a hot tub on it, then they have entered a restricted area.
These are often for crew members only as a place away from passengers and cannot be accessed by guests.
Cruise secrets have revealed why passengers should always avoid the early disembarking queues.
These can often take more time than waiting until the end of the cruise.
Cruise holidays are some of the best ways to see the world in luxury.
Most cruise ships have unlimited entertainment with live stage shows and performances as well as swimming pools, buffets and adventure activities.
Many travellers head to the casino to try their luck at betting on the tables.
This might not always be the best idea on a cruise ship, however.
The odds on a cruise ship are worse than on land, according to cruise web Cruzely.
They explained: “The most common rule change you’ll see is blackjack paying 6-to-5 instead of the more usual 3-to-2 [on land].
“If that doesn’t sound like a big deal, consider that a $ 10 bet would pay $ 12 on blackjack instead of $ 15 under the typical rules.”
It also explains that there are a lot of new players on the ship who try their luck, meaning even more chance of losing more money.
Avid cruise goers took to online forum FlyerTalk to agree with the poor odds.
One remarked: “Casino odds onboard are worse than you’d find in Vegas.”
Another wrote: “On average, you will lose your money faster in a cruise ship casino than in a major land based one.
“On the cruise lines I have been on, every game has had worse odds –Blackjack and Craps are tweaked to further favour the house.”
Passengers wanting to try their luck should instead try casinos during stopovers on land, instead of the onboard entertainment
It isn’t the only reason to avoid the casino – they are also home to the most germs on a ship.
A cruise doctor previously told Express.co.uk that the worst places are the lift buttons, toilet door handles and slot machines on the casino.
These areas are likely to have the highest concentration of germs and bacteria.
“It is easy for germs to spread as everyone lives and works in close proximity in a confined space,” he said.
To avoid falling sick, using antibacterial wash and spray can help when washing hands.
It could also be worth wiping down the surfaces before using them.
Emirates flight 203 was travelling from Dubai to New York when the incident occurred.
Of the 500 passengers onboard, 10 of them reported feeling unwell upon landing, despite earlier reports of 100 passengers.
The plane landed earlier this morning where it was met by a quarantine area to check the passengers’ health.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently investigating to see what could have caused the illness.
The New York Mayor’s office confirmed quarantine of the plane after landing at 9am local time.
Aviation analyst Alex Machetes tweeted: “According to a member of the Emirates flight crew communicating with air traffic control: ‘The affected passengers are coughing and have fevers over 100°F (37.7°C)’.”
He also wrote the reason was “allegedly as a result of the onboard catering”.
A passenger also told him: “Crew told us a bunch of people are sick, but we have not seen any evidence of that.”
Passenger Jaison Augustine tweeted: “I’m on this flight right now! Seems like the sick passengers are in the lower deck in economy. I’m traveling in the upper deck.”
In a statement on Twitter, the airline wrote: “Emirates can confirm that about 10 passengers on #EK203 from Dubai to New York were taken ill.
“On arrival, as a precaution, they were attended to by local health authorities.
“All others will disembark shortly. The safety & care of our customers is our first priority.”
More to follow
The Jet2 flight returned from Spain last night to Leeds at 9:45pm when the incident occurred.
After landing, two ambulances and a Hazardous Area Response team were dispatched to the area.
Passengers were reportedly being violently sick due to the bug after landing at the airport.
No-one was reported to have been taken to hospital.
One passenger told Yorkshire Evening Post: “We were stuck on the run way for nearly a hour waiting for the emergency services to attend and give us the all clear.”
Another took to Facebook to praise the services of the crew, saying people onboard were “dropping like flies,” according to the BBC.
West Yorkshire Police Sergeant Chris Brumfitt tweeted images at the time of the response.
He wrote: “Joint emergency service response to Leeds / Bradford airport tonight after reports of a number of people falling ill on an in-bound flight.
“Fortunately nothing more than a sickness bug.”
A spokesperson for Jet2 confirmed to Express.co.uk: “We can confirm that the crew on board flight LS298 from Reus to Leeds Bradford Airport arranged an ambulance for two passengers who were taken ill.
“The crew were alerted to a further two, non-associated cases of passengers feeling unwell on board.
“On arrival, as a precaution they were immediately checked over in the ambulance before heading home.
“All other passengers disembarked as normal and continued their journeys. The safety and care of our customers is always our first priority.”
Sickness bugs can spread very easily on a plane thanks to the circulated air inside the cabin.
Turning the air vent off above a seat, however, could mean catching even more germs.
The blast of air from the overhead fan can help push any germs in the air that are spread through compartments of the plane ctowards the floor.
The medical director at Lahey Medical Center-Peabody told Travel + Leisure it can block particles that spread through the air from the passenger.
He said: “As a rule of thumb, the air that you’re typically breathing and exposed to is usually anywhere from two to five rows surrounding your seat.”
The air vent therefore pushes the air downwards which can help to avoid falling sick.
